We have a MS Window server 2003 with SP2, currently there is a website running, the webiste is desgined by using asp.net 2.0 c#.
We reinstalled the window server 2003 last week, and we found the email functions not working any more(users in the website can't receive email each other).
I have spent days and trying to figure out, but no luck, I have tried to reset the IIS settings, SMTP Virtual settings, and add/remove windows componets settings...
Are there any good tutorials or tools for Serer Hardening on CentOS?
Additionally, any good Host based IDS units along those lines?
When using domaintools.com to see what sites are on a server, sometimes it says dedicated server. Does this mean that there may be several sites on that server and it is just that the domaintools.com service cannot find out what the others are?

View 2 Replies View RelatedLots of things have improved in the last 5 or so years with regards to hosting.. faster hardware, improved control panels, cheaper bandwidth.. but the ability to keep your eye on your box whilst out and about is definitely amongst them I'd say.
So share your tech tips for when you're not at your desktop for monitoring your sites.
Key hardware: My iPhone. 3G is prevalent in my locality, but the deal on o2 means I also get free access to the two largest UK public wifi hotspots - TheCloud and BT OpenZone. Whilst some of these are free anyway (such as ones in pubs) being able to walk through town whilst on a wifi connection can be really useful if the 3G is lagging or just not there.
Software:
Pingdom - It's not the flashiest of all apps, but it tells you what you need to know - is the server up?! It'll echo all your reports for all servers into one quick and easy screen. I really hope Pingdom puts even more time and effort into this, it could make the service unbeatable with a few more features. The app is free too, which is a bonus.
TouchTerm - there's a bunch of SSH clients for the iPhone out there, I've not had chance to try any of the others but will do at some point. All my accounts are bookmarked in and I can replicate whatever I need to with ease. I've installed software and configured it with relative ease just using the touch keypad. It was either free or at most a dollar or two.
iStat - The software/server combination used to be Mac only but someone has ported the server side over to *nix now and it runs pretty well. I'm having issues with one of my boxes showing it's bandwidth usage but I'll look more into that. Live CPU/Memory figures AND graphing?! Very impressive, and if you're doing face to face with your client it's bound to be a good thing to show off (make sure it's working first tho!!). It was £1.19/$1.99 on promotion when I bought it, should still be for a little more.
Critical email accounts IMAP'd - all my key accounts are on 15minute checks, and I'll be making an emergency PUSH account for when time is very much of the essence. Having instant access to email is absolutely essential on a handheld device these days, and the iPhone does a pretty neat job of it.
EverNote - great note syncing between various boxes. No more having to ring people to jump on my laptop to read me out an IP address or similar ever again.
I've got a housed server within my customer's datacenter. I consider application runs ok, but it goes very slow.
I consider it's due to their connection (DSL) and installed another provisional server with a simple "Hello World" and no traffic. I'm to install the same server within another datacenter, and would like to find an external tool to certify connectivity times.
Do you know any of these tools? I'm not searching tools like 'Apache AB' or 'HP httperf', but public online services.

My server is openvz based and im used hypervm for manage it.
My customer send a support request to cpanel and they said:
The error is related to the package system on your server, you would need to contact your server provider to have that error corrected.
So after a failer update to 12 I ran bootstrap repair.
But Apache wont start. - I get errors like -

Like before on this 1 particular box I would have to type:
cp file.txt file2.txt -f
in order to enforce overwrite
but recently if I do
cp file.txt file2.txt
it doesnt ask if I want to overwrite the file, it just does it

Most people probably run Linux on their media servers, but since I don't know much about Linux and the media server we have is unmanaged, I was wondering how you guys feel about running Windows Server 2003 Std on a media server instead of Linux. We'll only be using the server to host Flash video files (.flv) and we'll be serving those vids on websites hosted on other servers, resulting in approx. 50,000-100,000 media views per day (filesizes range from approx. 5MB to 10MB). We don't want to run Windows Media Services, just a Web server (IIS6) and have the Flash video players on the external websites take care of the streaming/downloading part.

Someone is asking whether I can host his disk image at his current host, which he is leaving for poor I/O (wonder why that would be ). I can host a diskimage, but I don't like diskimages (slow, and 100GB isn't very 'comfortable' either). Is there any way out there to convert a disk image into a normal partition?
I have home network of 5 computers and 1 server running server 2003. I'm trying to use the IIS on the server to run multiple sites (for design purposes). i've installed DNS and setup my primary zone "shane.com" in "forward zone" i've added Host(a) and called it "test6"
in IIS i've set up a new site and in host header value i've put test6.shane.com.
everything works great on the server. when i type in [url]in the browser the page comes up without any problems. however when i do the same thing on the other workstations it pulls up the page some some other page from the internet and not my LAN as if it wasn't connecting to the primary DNS (which i changed to my server's ip 192.168.1.2).
what am i doing wrong? why does it work on the server but not on any other workstation on my LAN?
I have just recieved a new machine from leaseweb. I have no other machines in any of their datacenters so this may be something specific to there firewall rules.
The machine came with leaseweb dns server entries, they wouldnt resolve any addresses so i changed them to openDNS addresses for the time being (208.67.222.222 / 208.67.222.220)
These DNS servers I know to work, however they still fail to resolve addresses either by nslookup or through a browser. (DNS Request Timed Out)
the server can ping the opendns addresses.
I have verified that the DNS Client service is started.
I dont know of any dependancies of the DNS client service - although I have noticed that leaseweb disable a lot of services on their default install. - Could it be a service that isnt started thats stopping DNS from resolving?
I dont want to configure the Microsoft DNS server on this machine although I will if neccesary.
