Switching Hosts

Jan 26, 2009

I've been using dot5hosting for about 2 years now and they have been alight. The thing is, for the last two years I have only been hosting a basic html/css website which is never to much stress on the servers. I don't get a huge amount of visitors on my site, but its a decent amount.

Just recently I have added a forum and blog on my site. For the forum I use Invision Power Board 2.3 and for my blog I use Wordpress 2.7. This is where the trouble begins.

Both the forum and the blog work fine, but they just take ages to load. If I had over 100 user on the blog and forum at one moment I would understand, but I haven't released the blog and forum to the public yet, as I'm trying to optimize them. The forum takes abou 10 seconds to load completely, while the blog takes over 15 seconds. I have tried everything with wordpress like cache etc..

So, I come here to ask what host you guys recommend for me. I've been looking over at HostGator and they seem to be what I need. I was also looking at MediaTemple Grid but form what I've read the Grid Service is very slow, and expensive. I just need a host that can run anything related to PHP and MySQl fast (like Wordpress and IPB)

Switching Hosts

Feb 12, 2009

I am in the process of transferring my hosting provider. I have completed the necessary steps to register an account with my new host(Host Papa). They already successfully transferred my domain and i am now waiting for the DNS change to be recognized(24-72 hrs). Host Papa now says the only thing to be done is to upload the website files to their server. The problem is that i have not yet copied the files from my old host, and i cannot seem to access the files now, as they have transferred the domain already.

I have no idea how to locate the files, as i have no access to my cPanel. I have not canceled my old host yet, and will not until my site is live on the new host. But i am stressing hard because i cant locate the files and obviously need that to happen asap.

Switching Managed Hosts

Apr 29, 2009

Currently I'm using a bare bones managed dedicated server from managemybox. The price is right, but for some reason, and I can't tell what's the problem, my server will time out multiple times a week. I am not having traffic spikes, it just seems to come and go and every contact with MMB I get a 'working fine now' response. Sometimes they take action, but don't explain to me what they do and don't offer solutions.

I'd love to find another managed dedicated server for under or around $100. I'm finding this very difficult to do.

I am currently hosting about 8 sites which range in traffic from 100 visitors per month to over 1700 per day. However, all sites are either WP or light php application. Do you think I've perhaps just outgrown what I'm using?

I Am Thinking Of Buying A Vps From ServerAxis

Nov 16, 2007

I find the plans to be ok.

I would like to clear a few doubts before I buy a VPS.

Here are some of them:This is the kind of setup I am looking for. Debian/Ubuntu + Webmin + Virtualmin + Usermin (maybe) + LAMP + RoR (upgradability).

I want to host multiple websites.

I would appreciate if ServeAxis can set this up for me to start with. Atleast, OS + LAMP + Webmin + Virtualmin LAMP should be setup the with default options provided by most of the shared hosts (eg: Dreamhost). Virtual host, etc. should be enabled.

Is there a knowledgebase (wiki) where I can read up on how to do this. I am okie with managing a linux system (ui, terminal) but haven't had core experience using live server. I can follow instruction through manual etc. but I have no clue of best practices.

No Community for ServerAxis users? Is there a forum etc. for Serveraxis.com users?

I can't find information regarding installation etc. on your website. Please give me any pointers if there are on the website or a handbook for administration.

--
This post would have been apt in the ServerAxis forum (if there was one), if not then from what I have figured out here is where I can get a good response.

I have put up a request for the same at support & sales @ SA. Will post up updates when I receive them.

Thinking Of Buying A Dedicated Server

Apr 22, 2008

I have been using a VPS for many years now and I am thinking of purchasing a dedicated server so that I can expand.

I intend to run:

-My website which has been running since 2002, just a vbulletin forum

-Some game servers

However my main intention is to run some Team Fortress 2 game servers on the dedi.

How many Team Fortress 2 game servers do you think I could run with these specifications?

Core 2 Duo 2.2 GHz
1GB RAM
160GB Hard Disk
10,000GB Bandwidth

Also, I'm used to using to cpanel/whm, how hard do you think is it to administer a linux server without any control panels?

Universal Hosts (uni-hosts) Two Week Mini Review

Apr 2, 2008

I was in the market for a new dedicated server after a couple of years with my previous provider. The previous provider did nothing wrong but they were no longer competitive when it came to CPU and memory.

I moved first to geekrack. And I left them after a week and a half as they never were able to get my rDNS records setup.

I found Universal Hosts on this forum and gave them a shot. I had asked for an operating system that they didn't offer normally (Debian 64 bit) and they said that they could do it. However, when my server was setup it was 32 bit Debian instead. They apologized and had Debian 64 bit setup less than 24 hours later.

When I asked them to get rDNS records setup it took a few hours but they were setup correctly and they worked.

Universal Hosts is also a BurstNet reseller but compared to my other attempt at using a BurstNet reseller they are fantastic. While the initial config was incorrect they worked quickly to fix it and were very professional about it.

So after two weeks - so far so good. Keep up the good work UniHosts!

Apache :: Virtual Hosts With Windows 8 Hosts File

Aug 11, 2013

I am running Apache2.2, PHP5.I have been running with virtual hosts on a Windows 7 environment fine for a couple of years successfully, but have just had to move to a Windows 8 environment. It looks like Apache and PHP have installed and are working fine, but my Virtual hosts are now not being recognised. From what I can tell, it is the Windows 8 hosts file that is having a problem, as it looks as though it is now just setup to Block websites.

If I make the host file just have the one line127.0.0.1 localhost entry, then the very first Virtual Host from my apache config file will come up, but the rest are not found. If I put the usual 127.0.0.1 mywebsite.name aliasname is appears as though my website works momentarily and then is blocked..

Switching DNS

Mar 31, 2009

As it stands now, I host my DNS locally. However, I would like to use DNSmadeEasy instead of my local DNS service. As far as I can tell, this entails the following:

1) Transferring my DNS zones over to DNSmadeEasy
2) Updating my glue records (or "host records" as GoDaddy calls them) so that my current ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com point to the DNSmadeEasy IP's instead of my server IP's.

My question then is, will the nameserver records for domains that point to my DNS automatically update?

The reason I ask is that when you setup nameserver entries at some registrars, they ask you for the nameservers AND the associated IP's. So do people who host on my server need to go to their registrar and update the IP's manually or will these glue records changes be reflected on all domains that point to ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com once their TTL expires?

Switching FTP

Apr 26, 2008

I built a website for a friend and uploaded it using Cute-FTP. My trial version expired, and I decided I didn't want to buy it because Filezilla has been highly recommended and it is free. I have downloaded Filezilla, but can't seem to get a connection to the server so that I can revise some of the website files and upload them. I keep getting a 530 Login incorrect error: cannot connect to server. I think I got the hostname, username and password correct, but I am not positive now, and I can't go back to Cute-FTP to see what I had entered there. It keeps shutting down on me. Is there any way I can find out exactly what I should be doing (like how to verify my login information) to get a connection?

Directadmin Hosts Or Cpanel Hosts

Aug 16, 2008

Recently I stumbled along a host on here with a good rep and that uses direct admin.

Because they were very nice on the live support I signed up to see what direct admin was like.

Its very diferent from cpanel. Some parts seem to be harder to use like the phpmyadmin requires the username and password to the database you created not the control panel username and password like cpanel. Although I guess that could be a good security feature just in case some one gets into the control panel they can not get into the phpmyadmin, then again if they are smart and were able to get into the control panel they could get into ftp and look what the username and password is on the config file for the script you are using.

The bandwidth meter seems to be better in direct admin although I think its acting up for me as its putting yesterdays bandwidth on todays. I was told by the host that it updates every 2 hours and at first it did but now its gone to every day. Oh and unlike cpanel this bandwidth meter includes bandwith used by the control panel.

Niether one from what I can tell counts sftp though at least for the hosts I have right now.

Switching From Rackspace To?

Mar 26, 2008

Like a couple of others that have posted here recently, we are looking to switch hosting from Rackspace to someone else. We've been with Rackspace for 3 years, and host 2 dedicated servers with them for our e-commerce business. We were with three other hosting companies the 2 years before that with many headaches, and Rackspace really stabilized the IT part of our business.

But they don't seem to be too competitive on pricing as our business grows. Our servers are over 3 years old now, and we just wanted to upgrade to comparable HW. We have already replaced a couple of hard drives and would prefer to be proactive. But they won't move on their pricing which would be a SIGNIFICANT increase in our budget, and most of our original support team has moved on, and I don't sense the same level of support we once had.

Our system is Windows-based running Cold Fusion. We have a web server and a database server running SQL. I have a full-time Cold Fusion developer on staff, but need Windows managed dedicated servers for our growing e-commerce retail business. We sell products to consumers - we do NOT resell IT services. Our shopping cart and back end system was all developed in house in Cold Fusion.

So these are some of the possibilities we have come up with to replace Rackspace, and I would appreciate any feedback from those that may be utilizing services from any of these companies:

Switching From GoDaddy

Jan 20, 2009

So one of my current hosts is a GoDaddy reseller. The site they're hosting is an eCommerce store run on .asp. It uses the Early Impact ProductCart shopping cart. It uses MS SQL databases if I understand correctly.

I have two sites currently hosted with LiquidWeb. I would switch my eCommerce site over to them, except they only offer Linux shared hosting plans. I would have to go with a VPS to get Windows with them. I'm looking for a shared hosting plan with 5 things in mind:

1) Excellent support and hosting uptime - on the level of Liquid Web. I'm willing to pay a premium for a good host. Over the past few days, pages time out and do not load on my GoDaddy server...and GoDaddy's support is no good. The site is in the building stages right now so it receives no more than like 5 hits per day. Uptime is the biggest issue besides support. If my site doesn't load currently receiving 5 hits a day....it's gonna be AWFUL when it's getting more visitors.

2) Email accounts - I have to pay extra for email accounts with GoDaddy. I'm hoping for a free email solution if at all possible.

3) I will likely need help with moving my website over and making sure everything runs correctly on the new host's server. If there's a host who can provide support for this, it would be a huge help.

4) 30-Day Moneyback Guarantee required.

5) I'm currently on the GoDaddy Windows Economy plan. I would hope to keep most of these features with new host, including all critical ones such as server software, etc. I tried to link the page showing the features, however I don't have enough posts to do

Switching DNS/Server

Feb 28, 2008

I made a post earlier this week regarding spec of a server, and thanks for all the replies, looks like we were looking in the wrong area looking at hardware, instead of our application. However what it did bring to light is problems swapping from our server 1 to server 2.

Both our servers are hosted by same company, our domain name points at one of the servers, and as we were experiencing problems with speed decided to move our name from server 1 to server 2, we did this using a control panel supplied by our hosting company, this worked, but however caused major problems as some of our users accessing the server could not access for nearly 24 hours, I understand now that making these changes takes time to propogate around the web.

My question is, is there anyway of switching our domain name from one server another, that from a user point of view is nearly instant, so within minutes of us making the switch ALL our users can access the new server?

Switching Servers

May 22, 2008

I am finally switching servers at ThePlanet from my Celeron processor to a beefier and much more powerful/newer solution. It should solve all of my high load problems and it's really affordable.

So basically, I have to migrate about 30 sites to the new server. The problem is, several of the hosted sites rely on databases and some even have SSL certificates associated with them.

I have cPanel, and I know there is a cool tool in WHM to copy files from another server.

However, I have been told it will not bring any databases with it.

So I am stuck wondering how the heck I transfer the databases and have them all set up properly?

Also, how do I transfer an SSL certificate to the new server?

In addition to all of that, is there any information I need to know before initiating the transfer besides what I have already asked? I know I need to configure it first, with all of the settings I have on the old one.

I am not a web hosting company, this is all for personal use. I definitely need some guidance on what to do and how to do it right from the start.

The only other question I have, is how long does all of this take? Is this something I can do in the middle of the night and have up and running by morning or is this going to require a day or two of downtime and should be planned for the weekend?

Switching Primary DNS

My idea was too:

1. Shut off my secondary DNS ns2. on my old server. (which I don't know how to do.) I was able to delete it from the nameserver Ip's link in whm. It deleted it but the server still has the IP assigned to it.

2. Set up my secondary dns on the new server. (cpanel wont let me because it says it already exists so I'm kind of stuck on this one too.)

3. Once the secondary is set up go to my registar and change the IP address.

4. move the sites, and turn off the primary ns server forcing everything to go to the new server or secondary dns.

5. move the primary..

Switching VPS Providers

* One time the account was down for over 6 hours in a row (Major failure), but it came back up
* Also there has been high loads causing database applications to run slow
* Now recently there appears to be a bandwidth problem where I can only download at 6Kb/s.

These problems are unacceptable to me.

Switching Vps Plans

Apr 27, 2007

Its been over 6-7 Months sonce i have been using Futurehosting vps cPanel - Elite Plan and i have been really satisfied with them!

Infact they are simply superb!

But Since last Month i am facing various horrible problems with my vps in cases of extra server load!

i have hosted only a invision power board forum on my vps which gets nearly 1k hits per day and talking about modifications i have no such modifications installed on my board that can raise up the server load!

i talked to Vik about this issue and he changed my account to a new more powerfull processor with same configuration;s and same value for money!

but now last night i got their email that they can no longer host my vps and that i have to swicth to a dedicated server!

Well Talking about a dedicated server i know that i have to move to it one day for sure but this is really not the correct time for me!

All My Vps is hosting is the ipb forum

I have requested Vik To Give me specifications of what processes have been raising the server load on the vps so that i can get it in deep of it!

Also i did submitted a ticket to Invision Guys and they scanned the system and found nothing at all that can raise up the server Load!

Switching Web Host

Jan 2, 2007

I do the web development for my dad's web site and he called me and said he has been having issues with the hosting company (they have charged him a setup fee for every year he has the site even though everything is already setup). Anyway, there are more issues but this was the last one. So I am trying to find a new hosting company. Just because of all the advertising they do, I went to GoDaddy.com and see they have a package for 5 GB of space with MySQL for $3.99 a month. This is a lot less then my dad is currently paying.

The reason I am making this post is to see if anyone has any hosting companies they would recommend and maybe some feedback on GoDaddy if you have any.

I want to find a hosting company that supports:

- ASP Classic

- .Net

- MySQL

- a web stats page (a good way to view how many people have hit your page, where they came from, etc),

- a support desk so if we have issues we can talk to a real person

- offers e-mail but my dad wants his e-mail address to be hisname@hiscompanyname.com. Is it hard to setup this... would it be called a sub domain?

- ability to change folder options - for example, I have a file upload process and any time I add a new folder to upload files into, I have to submit an e-mail request to the hosting company and they take 3 or 4 days to turn around the request. I always thought there would be a way I could do this but maybe I am wrong.

Also, are there going to be any issues changing the hosting company so when people type in www.heartlandmachinery.com, it goes to the new hosting company, not the old hosting company? Sorry for so many questions, I just have never done this before and I want to make sure I have everything setup before we make the switch.

Switching To SliceHost From DreamHost?

Nov 11, 2008

I have been using DreamHost for several years and for the most part it has been a good experience. The price is cheap, you can host an unlimited number of sites, and I have not experienced much downtime.

But now that I am hosting a lot of sites based on WordPress, server performance has become an issue. It can take anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds for a site to appear in a browser. In comparison, the static HTML sites that I crank out in Dreamweaver pop up almost instantly.

I have done some research on companies offering virtual web servers and it appears that a lot of people like SliceHost. I am aware that I will now have to administer my own web server and no longer have the benefit of using c-panel. This doesn't scare me as I have been playing around with Linux and Apache since RedHat 4.0 and now use Ubuntu at work.

Before I sign up for a $20/monthly account at SliceHost, I am wondering if I will notice a significant performance difference between them and DreamHost? Has anyone on this forum ever made this switch and if so, did they think it was worth it?

Right now, I have about 25 domains on my DreamHost account that I will be moving over. About 12 of them are WordPress and I plan to eventually convert the remaining static sites over to either WordPress or Joomla. I also have about 12 sites on BlueHost that I would like to eventually transfer to the virtual hosting plan as well. So I will eventually be hosting about 40 sites. (As a side note, it seems that BlueHost's servers have a slight performance edge over DreamHost. But it doesn't seem to be that great.)

Obviously, the ultimate solution would be to get my own server at a co-location place like RackSpace, but right now, I don't want to spend the additional $$$ and want to become a better website admin before I make this jump.
