I have been using DreamHost for several years and for the most part it has been a good experience. The price is cheap, you can host an unlimited number of sites, and I have not experienced much downtime.
But now that I am hosting a lot of sites based on WordPress, server performance has become an issue. It can take anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds for a site to appear in a browser. In comparison, the static HTML sites that I crank out in Dreamweaver pop up almost instantly.
I have done some research on companies offering virtual web servers and it appears that a lot of people like SliceHost. I am aware that I will now have to administer my own web server and no longer have the benefit of using c-panel. This doesn't scare me as I have been playing around with Linux and Apache since RedHat 4.0 and now use Ubuntu at work.
Before I sign up for a $20/monthly account at SliceHost, I am wondering if I will notice a significant performance difference between them and DreamHost? Has anyone on this forum ever made this switch and if so, did they think it was worth it?
Right now, I have about 25 domains on my DreamHost account that I will be moving over. About 12 of them are WordPress and I plan to eventually convert the remaining static sites over to either WordPress or Joomla. I also have about 12 sites on BlueHost that I would like to eventually transfer to the virtual hosting plan as well. So I will eventually be hosting about 40 sites. (As a side note, it seems that BlueHost's servers have a slight performance edge over DreamHost. But it doesn't seem to be that great.)
Obviously, the ultimate solution would be to get my own server at a co-location place like RackSpace, but right now, I don't want to spend the additional $$$ and want to become a better website admin before I make this jump.
I need a VPS server for a gaming server that requires an uber/good upload connection speed. Packet transfer speeds range from 4 Kbps to 40+ Kbps for each player and I have about 300 players on the server at any given time. RAM/Processor isn't that important just ~1 GB of RAM would be sufficient. I heard good reviews about slicehost and ubiquityservers and I'm having a tough decision on who to choose for my gaming server.
U's Infinity VPS and Slicehost's 1GB slice plan are the same price.
I am wondering what the difference between Linode and Slicehost is they both seem pretty solid (However linode's real monthly billing is more appealing.)
Also when someone has a VPS (the cheapest (256mb ram...)) Do you find it easy to run your own Sql server and Memcached while running a webserver?
My service at Slicehost recently got very slow so I don't think their network management is the best it could be. So I'm preparing to leave if it remains like this for anymore than a few days. Is there any VPS people could recommend with comparable service catered to developers with an active community and good connection speeds?
I have a Magentocommerce shoping cart presently hosted on a dedicated server (2.40GHz , 28 KB Cache celeron processor - 512 MB RAM) and the processor is running on full steam when customer accesses certain pages. This is because the shopping cart is processor intensive. I see that my MYSQL hogs the processor and am looking to VPS to provide me with more power for less cost.
I have slicehost and Linode on my list of VPS providers.
1.Linode offer only RAID-1 against Slichost's RAID-10. Does this matter that much? How do I decide on this?
2. From what I see, on VPS, a 256 MB plan would mean around 40 sites sharing the quad core processor which means, I would get worst case, 250MHz guaranteed from VPS provider. Will this still be better than my present celeron processor. I am unable to compare them.
3. I would like to hire someone reliable to get the VPS server installed with basic LAMP setup and extensions required for Magento. Will someone be able to help me on this? Where do I look for such a service?
A friend and I both recently purchased VPS "slices" for various reasons. I joined linode.com and he joined slicehost, agreeing that we'd share opinions and experiences with each other to see which one was the better deal.
Up front, slicehost gives a better first impression - but that's subjective - so we were at first both inclined to buy from them. That's when we learned about linode through WHT.
We both got a low-end slice - he got the 256MB slice from slicehost, I got the 360MB slice from linode.
After about 2 months of service with both companies, I can definitely say that they've lived up to both their reputations. We haven't experienced any downtimes from either of them, performance has never felt sluggish (although the extra ram from linode certainly helps!), and support has been quick to respond from both companies.
I think the thing about our particular situation, though, is that we're both very familiar with linux systems, so apart from the initial set up phase where we wanted to make sure we got the right distro (CentOS 5 users here), we haven't heavily used either administrative web apps. Most of our access after day 1 has been ssh to our machines to install various components, mostly ruby, rails, mysql, rubygems, apache, and the rest of the web app stack.
For our situation, both these companies met expectations, and I give them a thumbs up to potential customers that are on the fence for whatever reason. That said, I'm giving the slight edge to linode, because you're getting basically the same service but with more RAM at the same price.
I have a client that I would call my 'primary' client, and as such he gets some leeway with me. Sunday he called and wants some new business venture of theirs to have a preliminary site up by Thursday so they can sell the idea to their initial prospects.
All fine & dandy. Now the present issue is that this morning he decided that it's time to get a new/different webhost for this venture. A bit of background...
Now this client has close to a dozen websites spread out over various hosting facilities that he's randomly found over the years. Ie, he's the sort that will pick the first or 2nd google result and call to give credit card details and let whoever is doing his IT at the time sort it out from there. So at this point he's got close to a dozen different sites (mostly focused around 4-5 business that revolve around their 'core' business) spread out all over, and it's a pain to administrate when issues arise.
Needless to say the randomness with which he does his IT decisions (he doesn't understand that web hosting isn't the same as buying off the shelf software for MS os's) is part of the reason for the randomess of the results he's gotten. I've slowly taken over more & more of the out-of-office IT related activities for their companies as a result, and have at least kept things stable the last year or so.
So for this new venture they're doing, I also want to get hosting I can eventually move all of his sites to (over the next couple of months). I think what I want for him is something equivalent to a reseller account somewhere that offers good support and acceptable uptime, because none of his sites generate incredible traffic counts or bandwidth counts, but it sure would be nice to have them consolidated into a single location that I can administrate them from. Most of the smaller sites can be moved as easily as ftp'ing things into place, doing a bit of quick database work and then moving dns, but one or two sites have enough traffic and custom rolled php so that will take a bit longer.
So the difficulty comes because I need to find something by this evening, get it up & running with a domain currently registered (dns) at godaddy, and have it be something I can migrate the rest of his sites to over the next 2-3 months. I do *not* have an LLC for my personal business so I don't want to resell hosting to him (I'm assuming that the liability isn't worth it for my dba status) but I do want to find something we can have dozens (maybe 50 eventually?) of sites hosted under. Typically I see this advertised by hosting companies as reseller accounts.
And I'm relying on info gathered here to supplant my decision making, as I did my last round of looking into hosts several months back and garnered a short list that I can't post here because of my new account status. So I'll just name them:
wiredtree
rackspace slicehost joyent
(these next 3 I have reseller hosting specifics from) mosso a2hosting mediatemple
bravenet dreamhost
More or less in the order that I perceived them to be at the time. Mosso is one of the ones that specifically lists reseller hosting, but I'm reading mixed things about them here and elsewhere on the net. Wiredtree looks interesting, but I'm not trying to move his sites to a single facility with independant plans per site,
As it stands now, I host my DNS locally. However, I would like to use DNSmadeEasy instead of my local DNS service. As far as I can tell, this entails the following:
1) Transferring my DNS zones over to DNSmadeEasy 2) Updating my glue records (or "host records" as GoDaddy calls them) so that my current ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com point to the DNSmadeEasy IP's instead of my server IP's.
My question then is, will the nameserver records for domains that point to my DNS automatically update?
The reason I ask is that when you setup nameserver entries at some registrars, they ask you for the nameservers AND the associated IP's. So do people who host on my server need to go to their registrar and update the IP's manually or will these glue records changes be reflected on all domains that point to ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com once their TTL expires?
I built a website for a friend and uploaded it using Cute-FTP. My trial version expired, and I decided I didn't want to buy it because Filezilla has been highly recommended and it is free. I have downloaded Filezilla, but can't seem to get a connection to the server so that I can revise some of the website files and upload them. I keep getting a 530 Login incorrect error: cannot connect to server. I think I got the hostname, username and password correct, but I am not positive now, and I can't go back to Cute-FTP to see what I had entered there. It keeps shutting down on me. Is there any way I can find out exactly what I should be doing (like how to verify my login information) to get a connection?
Like a couple of others that have posted here recently, we are looking to switch hosting from Rackspace to someone else. We've been with Rackspace for 3 years, and host 2 dedicated servers with them for our e-commerce business. We were with three other hosting companies the 2 years before that with many headaches, and Rackspace really stabilized the IT part of our business.
But they don't seem to be too competitive on pricing as our business grows. Our servers are over 3 years old now, and we just wanted to upgrade to comparable HW. We have already replaced a couple of hard drives and would prefer to be proactive. But they won't move on their pricing which would be a SIGNIFICANT increase in our budget, and most of our original support team has moved on, and I don't sense the same level of support we once had.
Our system is Windows-based running Cold Fusion. We have a web server and a database server running SQL. I have a full-time Cold Fusion developer on staff, but need Windows managed dedicated servers for our growing e-commerce retail business. We sell products to consumers - we do NOT resell IT services. Our shopping cart and back end system was all developed in house in Cold Fusion.
So these are some of the possibilities we have come up with to replace Rackspace, and I would appreciate any feedback from those that may be utilizing services from any of these companies:

I've been using dot5hosting for about 2 years now and they have been alight. The thing is, for the last two years I have only been hosting a basic html/css website which is never to much stress on the servers. I don't get a huge amount of visitors on my site, but its a decent amount.
Just recently I have added a forum and blog on my site. For the forum I use Invision Power Board 2.3 and for my blog I use Wordpress 2.7. This is where the trouble begins.
Both the forum and the blog work fine, but they just take ages to load. If I had over 100 user on the blog and forum at one moment I would understand, but I haven't released the blog and forum to the public yet, as I'm trying to optimize them. The forum takes abou 10 seconds to load completely, while the blog takes over 15 seconds. I have tried everything with wordpress like cache etc..
So, I come here to ask what host you guys recommend for me. I've been looking over at HostGator and they seem to be what I need. I was also looking at MediaTemple Grid but form what I've read the Grid Service is very slow, and expensive. I just need a host that can run anything related to PHP and MySQl fast (like Wordpress and IPB)
I am in the process of transferring my hosting provider. I have completed the necessary steps to register an account with my new host(Host Papa). They already successfully transferred my domain and i am now waiting for the DNS change to be recognized(24-72 hrs). Host Papa now says the only thing to be done is to upload the website files to their server. The problem is that i have not yet copied the files from my old host, and i cannot seem to access the files now, as they have transferred the domain already.
I have no idea how to locate the files, as i have no access to my cPanel. I have not canceled my old host yet, and will not until my site is live on the new host. But i am stressing hard because i cant locate the files and obviously need that to happen asap.
So one of my current hosts is a GoDaddy reseller. The site they're hosting is an eCommerce store run on .asp. It uses the Early Impact ProductCart shopping cart. It uses MS SQL databases if I understand correctly.
I have two sites currently hosted with LiquidWeb. I would switch my eCommerce site over to them, except they only offer Linux shared hosting plans. I would have to go with a VPS to get Windows with them. I'm looking for a shared hosting plan with 5 things in mind:
1) Excellent support and hosting uptime - on the level of Liquid Web. I'm willing to pay a premium for a good host. Over the past few days, pages time out and do not load on my GoDaddy server...and GoDaddy's support is no good. The site is in the building stages right now so it receives no more than like 5 hits per day. Uptime is the biggest issue besides support. If my site doesn't load currently receiving 5 hits a day....it's gonna be AWFUL when it's getting more visitors.
2) Email accounts - I have to pay extra for email accounts with GoDaddy. I'm hoping for a free email solution if at all possible.
3) I will likely need help with moving my website over and making sure everything runs correctly on the new host's server. If there's a host who can provide support for this, it would be a huge help.
4) 30-Day Moneyback Guarantee required.
5) I'm currently on the GoDaddy Windows Economy plan. I would hope to keep most of these features with new host, including all critical ones such as server software, etc. I tried to link the page showing the features, however I don't have enough posts to do
As you may have noted from my previous posts im now switching from my old host to WiredTree.com, after a while i'll give a formal review, buy guys, trust me these guys are outstanding. The response time for a support ticket is literally within MINUTES...i can actually submit a support ticket.. sit for 5 or 10 minutes, refresh, and ill get an answer, and an answer that actually helps. This host is great, plus, they offer cPanel pre-installed, and free. Now that's great. So far i trust these guys completely.
I made a post earlier this week regarding spec of a server, and thanks for all the replies, looks like we were looking in the wrong area looking at hardware, instead of our application. However what it did bring to light is problems swapping from our server 1 to server 2.
Both our servers are hosted by same company, our domain name points at one of the servers, and as we were experiencing problems with speed decided to move our name from server 1 to server 2, we did this using a control panel supplied by our hosting company, this worked, but however caused major problems as some of our users accessing the server could not access for nearly 24 hours, I understand now that making these changes takes time to propogate around the web.
My question is, is there anyway of switching our domain name from one server another, that from a user point of view is nearly instant, so within minutes of us making the switch ALL our users can access the new server?
I am finally switching servers at ThePlanet from my Celeron processor to a beefier and much more powerful/newer solution. It should solve all of my high load problems and it's really affordable.
So basically, I have to migrate about 30 sites to the new server. The problem is, several of the hosted sites rely on databases and some even have SSL certificates associated with them.
I have cPanel, and I know there is a cool tool in WHM to copy files from another server.
However, I have been told it will not bring any databases with it.
So I am stuck wondering how the heck I transfer the databases and have them all set up properly?
Also, how do I transfer an SSL certificate to the new server?
In addition to all of that, is there any information I need to know before initiating the transfer besides what I have already asked? I know I need to configure it first, with all of the settings I have on the old one.
I am not a web hosting company, this is all for personal use. I definitely need some guidance on what to do and how to do it right from the start.
The only other question I have, is how long does all of this take? Is this something I can do in the middle of the night and have up and running by morning or is this going to require a day or two of downtime and should be planned for the weekend?
I got a new server and need to move my primary and secondary DNS. I use cpanel.
My idea was too:
1. Shut off my secondary DNS ns2. on my old server. (which I don't know how to do.) I was able to delete it from the nameserver Ip's link in whm. It deleted it but the server still has the IP assigned to it.
2. Set up my secondary dns on the new server. (cpanel wont let me because it says it already exists so I'm kind of stuck on this one too.)
3. Once the secondary is set up go to my registar and change the IP address.
4. move the sites, and turn off the primary ns server forcing everything to go to the new server or secondary dns.
I am currently with VPS and while their support is top notch, I have had many problems the past couple of months with my VPS account.
* One time the account was down for over 6 hours in a row (Major failure), but it came back up * Also there has been high loads causing database applications to run slow * Now recently there appears to be a bandwidth problem where I can only download at 6Kb/s.
These problems are unacceptable to me.
if I switch to another VPS, how can I ensure an easy, smooth transfer?
Switching servers and I'm wondering if there's a way to redirect the members who are still seeing the old site to the right location. I've seen this done thru using IPs. I have 2 main domain that would probably be really useful with it..
Its been over 6-7 Months sonce i have been using Futurehosting vps cPanel - Elite Plan and i have been really satisfied with them!
Infact they are simply superb!
But Since last Month i am facing various horrible problems with my vps in cases of extra server load!
i have hosted only a invision power board forum on my vps which gets nearly 1k hits per day and talking about modifications i have no such modifications installed on my board that can raise up the server load!
i talked to Vik about this issue and he changed my account to a new more powerfull processor with same configuration;s and same value for money!
but now last night i got their email that they can no longer host my vps and that i have to swicth to a dedicated server!
Well Talking about a dedicated server i know that i have to move to it one day for sure but this is really not the correct time for me!
All My Vps is hosting is the ipb forum
I have requested Vik To Give me specifications of what processes have been raising the server load on the vps so that i can get it in deep of it!
Also i did submitted a ticket to Invision Guys and they scanned the system and found nothing at all that can raise up the server Load!
I do the web development for my dad's web site and he called me and said he has been having issues with the hosting company (they have charged him a setup fee for every year he has the site even though everything is already setup). Anyway, there are more issues but this was the last one. So I am trying to find a new hosting company. Just because of all the advertising they do, I went to GoDaddy.com and see they have a package for 5 GB of space with MySQL for $3.99 a month. This is a lot less then my dad is currently paying.
The reason I am making this post is to see if anyone has any hosting companies they would recommend and maybe some feedback on GoDaddy if you have any.
I want to find a hosting company that supports:
- ASP Classic
- .Net
- MySQL
- a web stats page (a good way to view how many people have hit your page, where they came from, etc),
- a support desk so if we have issues we can talk to a real person
- offers e-mail but my dad wants his e-mail address to be hisname@hiscompanyname.com. Is it hard to setup this... would it be called a sub domain?
- ability to change folder options - for example, I have a file upload process and any time I add a new folder to upload files into, I have to submit an e-mail request to the hosting company and they take 3 or 4 days to turn around the request. I always thought there would be a way I could do this but maybe I am wrong.
Also, are there going to be any issues changing the hosting company so when people type in www.heartlandmachinery.com, it goes to the new hosting company, not the old hosting company? Sorry for so many questions, I just have never done this before and I want to make sure I have everything setup before we make the switch.
My company currently hosts with Rackspace but the prices have been going up like crazy. Just wondering can someone help recommend some great providers with excellent uptime guarantee. We host a web application on a windows server. As well we also need to be able to utilize virtual hosting as well.
I have been using reseller hosting from siteground for a few months now, but as my site grew, I had to switch to dedicated hositng. I ordered a dedicated server from ovh, which is not managed (or so I think), so I had to install everything by myself. I created an ftp account for myself and installed webmin (dont want to pay for cpanel), so here's my question; how do I host my website on this server? Where is the public_html folder located?
I have a domain registered and all I need to do is upload the files to the new server and change the dns. Any help?
Recently my "crappy" hosting company decided it would upgrade the servers so I can't send them requests, use the control panel (as its being upgraded) and I really, really want to transfer my account from them to my new host.
Even though I pressed the button to transfer my account, it still hasn't happened - I've written letters, sent emails, done everything I can think of.
My last resort is through Nominet, and changing the IPS tag of my domain name (which runs out pretty soon) to 123-REG (or another IPS tag renewer).
My question is -- if I use Nominet to change my IPS tag on my behalf - would my hosting company still have the DNS settings? Can I still change them - or would it remain in their hands? - (I'm aware that I'd still be liable for outstanding fees, bills, etc).
Currently I'm using a bare bones managed dedicated server from managemybox. The price is right, but for some reason, and I can't tell what's the problem, my server will time out multiple times a week. I am not having traffic spikes, it just seems to come and go and every contact with MMB I get a 'working fine now' response. Sometimes they take action, but don't explain to me what they do and don't offer solutions.
I'd love to find another managed dedicated server for under or around $100. I'm finding this very difficult to do.
I am currently hosting about 8 sites which range in traffic from 100 visitors per month to over 1700 per day. However, all sites are either WP or light php application. Do you think I've perhaps just outgrown what I'm using?
I am currently using godaddys deluxe hosting plan which includes 100 simultaneous SQL connections but often get the error.
"Service Temporarily Unavailable The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later. Apache/1.3.33 Server at blogulate.com Port 80"
At this point I am pretty much fed up with godaddy. My question is what would you all recommend I do with a site that is getting around 12,000-15,000 visitors a day. Do I need to get a dedicated, virtual dedicated, or a VPS server? Can I scoot by with that traffic not getting one of those? And can you recommend some hosting companies for me that would fit my needs?
