I want to know how can I setup a VPN server on a centos 4 server through ssh?
not willing to sell vpn accounts, just for personal use.
I've searched a lot, but mostly centos was not listed, and the tutorials were so complicated.
I have install VNC on my test VPS.
I download tightvnc and play with it just fine, everything working like it should.
But, I just want to SSH to the VPS and now it give me "Server unexpectedly closed network connection"
I need to know how can I ssh into my vps again.
Can I just reboot the server and relogin again?
I want to start my own web server it will be hosting company for future. I will host to 100-200 domain and web sites as begining. Os will be linux red hat with cpanel.
My system will be;
HP ProLiant DL385 G2 (438816-421 HP DL385G2 2220) Two
opteron cpu's
Ram 8gb
HDD 8x HP 146GB 10K SAS 2.5 Hot Plug Hard Drive
Fire wall Cisco Pix 515e
My questions;
What can I do for this server works non stop 7/24 if any problem happen hw or sw base?
How many of same system I have to buy?
For example if I need to buy 2 of them. What kind of setup I need? (Like mirror, load balancing, vps, proxy) or if there are some hw base systems, what is your succes?
I have seen many people who run and maintain their own dedicated/servers, now i am thinking of having one of my own. Ive done some research and know the basics in terms of what to install and the hardware side of things.
If i run it from home on a very good PC how can i allocate bandwidth from people such as "The Planet" etc.. will i be able to pay for what i use only instead of paying a very high lump sum cooperate price, as i will be starting off new and experimenting things.
I would ideally want to run and host game servers. If you think the above wont suffice then what company could i approach in terms of getting me off the floor without having to pay a lot of money before im fully established?
I have one main server with various virtual servers installed on it. however I do not succeed in restarting one of the virtual server. i receive javascript errors(see attachment).
I have put all the security settings to low,enable scripts etc. and still it doesn't work.
I would like to start selling dedicated servers.So how can I start with?

i would like to know what specifications and how many of those accounts you would reccomend hosting on this server.
the specifications of the server are:
• AMD Dual Core 64-bit 4200+
• 1 GB RAM
• 160 GB Hard Drive
i am looking to set this up for as cheap as possible and sofar only know of Virtuozzo that can do this is there any other software that can do this, and what control panel would you reccomend.
I installed XAMPP a few weeks ago and had a php website working on my localhost – all worked fine no probs. To do this I had to stop my IIS server as this was also using port:80 which is what XAMPP is set to use as default. Now for some reason when I started IIS again a few days ago to do some asp development work and then stopped it again, the apache server would not start even though I’ve definitely stopped IIS. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing XAMPP, but it still won’t start. I tried running the apache_start.bat from the command line and I got the following error message:
"An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its
access permissions": make_sock: unable to listen for connections on address 0.0.0.0:80 no listening sockets available, shutting down

If I try and start Apache from the XAMPP control panel it just says Apache:stopped and the message in the bottom window is ERROR: Apache service not started [-1]
I was just wondering if you had come across this problem before? If yes, how did you resolve it? Someone mentioned changing the port, but being a bit new to apache and XAMPP I’m not really sure what would need to change in what config files.

I am mostly looking for Unmetered Servers. Like FDC, but their servers are too slow as i heard from some of my friends.
Any other servers that are unmetered and offer good speeds?
I want a shared 100mbit for the start, maybe i will upgrade later.
I currently have 10mbit unmetered, but thats not enough for filehosting sites.
Being using the free version of siteuptime.com but this month alone i have had so far 3 false alerts reported, i am always in the putty and does not get interrupted, and i am sure i am around on the site too while supposedly siteuptime reports down (i am guessing firewall blocks their server ip for w/e reason). So am wondering is there any really good public tracking site out there which can do public reports more accurately and not kak out on me?
Whats your experience with siteuptime for monitoring if any ? Sometimes it works "ok" other times its just off the charts.

I have a server with serverbeach and I have WHm and cpanel installed but I have no clue how to install any other programs on my server.
I wanted to install FFMPEG and a few other things but I do not know how to remote in or anything like that.
I am on Windows XP and I have full root access to my server (its dedicated).

You could go a little 'crazy' and chattr +i all your major binaries......however my only issue with this is that yum updates will fail until you manually chattr -i and update.

What are the ways to find out why a CentOS 5.3 server running cPanel suddenly went offline.
I ran "last reboot -n 10" and "last" and grepped for shutdown calls, but nothing. /var/log/messages.1 reveals nothing as well.
I decided to go with Cent OS after reading about it in the forums here, but I've had nothing but problems trying to install it. I first tried to do a net install but the installation took nearly an entire day because it would keep popping up messages about corrupt files when downloading the package files. Eventually it just gave up or rebooted because I came in in the morning to find it at a message saying "No OS installed". I then burned all 7 installation disks and tried that way, still got a few of the corrupt file messages (but far fewer than the previous time) and made it through the installation only to still have it say "no os installed" again after the reboot. I thought maybe it had something to do with the fact that I was not installing a boot loader (there is no other OS installed anyways) but when I tried to reinstall a third time, this time with the boot loader, it now says that the CD drive (USB) is already mounted on tty2 and I can't even start the installation? WTH!
The server is a Dell PowerEdge R300 with two Intel Core 2 Duo 64-bit processors. I'm using the x86_64 ISOs from the Centos.org mirrors.
i have a problem with all my server with RHEL4 or Centos 4.4, when u upload small files on the server the system report a different size, this is a little example

where are this 5kb of difference? i have note that this happend when a site have small files inside, example when u install joomla about 7mb on my server it is 18Mb, the server size block is set to 4kb
I have setup a CentOS 4.5 on a server with no fancy options enabled.
The only thing I have is the ssh service running on port 22.
The server comes up fine but is inaccessible until I login into the console and pings an external IP or domain.
Once I have done this, I am able to remotely login into the server via ssh.
And then few minutes after, the server becomes unavailable again until I do the same routine...ping an external IP or domain.

The problem is I recently got my Deiticated reformated.. and now every time i run it it says "Run-time error; "9" Subscript out of range,
but it ust to work before they reformated it. And when i install it on my home pc or any other pc it works fine...

We like to create the mail accounts through php scripts in mywebsite.com website. So we request you to setup the Qmail with Vpopmail server in our server. As we have the following packages are already installed.
1. Qmail
2. Courier POP/IMAP
3. Horde Webmail client
Please install the vpopmail in the ourserver and configure these four packages to create the mail accounts via php script. So that we can use vaddsuer command in php to create the mail ids annd also imap_open commands to access the mails.
Our server is configured with Plesk control panel.
The installation is very urgent, as our website is going live sooner.
I will make the decision sooner and let us know the cost, as it will be given to the provider sooner.

I was adding another apache node to the cluster. All the nodes have RHEL5 installed on it. I downloaded the source httpd-2.2.10 and compile it using commands:
./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache --enable-module=so --enable-rewrite=shared --enable-cgi=shared --enable-unique_id=shared --enable-ssl=shared --enable-include=shared
make
make install
After it is compiled without any errors, when i am trying to start it it's giving me error.
# /usr/local/apache/bin/apachectl start
httpd: Could not open configuration file /usr/local/apache/conf/httpd.conf: Invalid argument
File exists at the said location. There is no permission issue also.
# ll /usr/local/apache/conf/httpd.conf

I have installed APF on box and set ports for in and out and enabled it.. of course, iptables is running from booting..

but when I check it like this

it said iptables is stop...even I start manually...
I am not sure APF is running correctly because of iptables..
What if i got a really good connection to this house i have in Sweden and bought some servers there, is it a good idea and would it sell? How hard is it to get a good connection, the house is in a fairly populated area of Sweden and i have partners who could help run it and do support 24 hours.
But its just a thought and we would start small. What do you guys think?
I have a wordpress site, and am trying to find someone good and reasonable price to design me a template for the website so I can still use wordpress but have access and control to everything.. I am going to buy a domain as well to hook wordpress up to it so I can edit themes etc.. I was looking at maybe using mmhosting..
Also, I have a forum, but not sure what type of forum I need to be able to arrange it and add and use features don't I can't now, so basically upgrade..

I have a dedicated machine with Xen configured... Dom0 stuff runs great.
I have a pre-made image from jailtime.org, with an ubuntu.7-04.img, ubuntu-7-05.xen3.cfg, and ubuntu.swap -- obviously, the actual image, the config file, and the swap file.

Actually, a couple derivative questions here...
- Are the /boot and /dev/sda1 literal? That is, do they relate to Dom0 names (/boot on the server, and /dev/sda1, my "real" disk), or are they telling the new DomU what to call them?
- I don't want DHCP.... Do I change dhcp to "0" / "false," or do I specify an IP?
I've found a zillion guides out there, and they cover everything about setting up Xen, except for this one part, it seems?
I'm having troubles starting up MySQL. When I run..
# service mysqld start
I get..
Starting MySQL................................... [FAILED]
So I ran..
# ps aux | grep mysql
And did kill -9 for the running processes. When I try to run..
# service mysqld stop
I get the error..
MySQL PID file could not be found! [FAILED]
So I don't really know what to do. Does anyone have any advice about how I could resolve this issue?

I'm attempting to start my first website. The good thing is I'm not new to computers, or programming (my main experience is with VB/C#). I don't have any web programming under my belt, but if I had to learn a new language I'm sure I would be fine.
The website I have in mind is mysweetcar.com. It's meant to be for the most part a typical web forum. I would also like the option of adding Paypal or some other basic e-commerce services. I already have the domain name registered. Now, obviously, I'm looking for a host.
The huge number of available hosts and hosting plans is pretty overwhelming. In my research so far I've found quite a bit of inconsistency and what seems to be false or misleading information. Almost every "review" site I've visited feels like its been paid off by the web hosts. In general I'm having trouble finding objective and unbiased analysis.
Heres a good example of my general confusion: The web host ixhosting.com offers 2500GB monthly transfer for only $6.45 a month. Yet on another website, hosting.com, the data transfer is only 25GB a month, and the plan costs $17. Can there really be such a huge difference? I also don't see numbers for bandwidth, for example with the 2500GB plan it wont matter if the bandwidth is poor and the site runs very slow. I also don't trust that the web host will be faithful to the transfer rate they give me. Is there a way I can independently verify what my transfer usage really is?
