Staminus Communications Hosting Botnet Forums

Nov 7, 2009

Staminus Communications has been hosting a botnet forum, which distributes bots, worms, trojans, illegal clickers, and tons more, 95% of the site is illegal, and is forbidden by Staminus's provider yet they could care less as long as they get there money, I sent an abuse letter August 17th 2009, they even admitted things were illegal on the site, I pointed out several like the Google Adsense clicker bot which is highly illegal and which is nothing close to the other content hosted and/or linked to.

They are hosting unkn0wn.ws they refuse to remove the site or make them remove the illegal content which is most of the forum, which now forces me to send a letter to there provider and the cybercrime which I am now doing.

Now I guess they do not care about what they host, only if the person pays, so I guess I'm just going to expose it here for everyone to notice, because it's just going to get there data center raided over time by hosting illegal content and not removing it.

Let's see what you guys think, or what the admins have to say when they read this post.

What do you guys think when a provider does nothing about illegal content do you think it's the employee's that are at fault or the customer?

Hosting Forums

Jun 22, 2008

Over the past 4 years I have had 5 different hosting companies. I run a small forum (400 to 1k page vies per day) and is a nuke forum. It usually runs flawlessly on the new host for 7 to 9 months and then the db bogs down and I switch to a new host and install the complete db again to the days postings and it runs gr8 yet again.

Im no expert but Im no newb either. I have worked for 2 hosting companies (Hostgator & Applied Innovations) and I have my Bachelors in IT. I know enough to be dangerous! Is there anyone who can tell me if there is a host that I can put my little forums on that doesnt charge an arm and a leg and is reliable enough to stay with.

I have seen all the reviews all over the place, but from working at hostgator I know they have their level 2 support people logging in to these types of forums as different people and posting great reviews every day, I dont think they have stopped doing that.

Is there any one who has been with their hosting co for years and have a site like mine that can say that they recommend it?

Forums Outgrowing Shared Hosting Plan Already

Jan 7, 2009

I have spent several hours on this forum over the past few days doing some research and have officially confused myself. I am a volunteer with a nonprofit organization and our online forums (running on vbulletin) are maxing out the database SQL connections several times per day. The host has a max_user_connections limit of 15 but doesn't have an intermediary step from shared hosting to dedicated hosting. Dedicated hosting is cost-prohibitive and the rest of our site has more than enough room to grow on our current hosting plan (including traffic bandwidth, disk space, etc).

We are planning to register a new domain name for the forums and move them off to another hosting provider. I donate the hosting fees to the organization and I don't have much of a budget to work with ($20/mo or so ideally). I am looking for recommendations for a hosting provider that will support a somewhat busy forum (usually only between 30-50 users online at once but anywhere between 1,000 and 2,500 pageviews per day) and also allow a stepped growth plan (instead of from shared straight to dedicated.)

I've seen Hawk Host, Siteground and URLJet mentioned frequently on posts here and over at vBulletin but I don't want to just jump into a new host and face a similar problem in the future.

Staminus Performance

Jun 2, 2008

I am currently working with an internet radio station, it is currently listed in iTunes and we are pushing about 90mbps from a ecatel server during the day. We are expanding and are looking to pick up more capacity and were considering doing Geolocating for generating playlist so listeners would get the closest relay to them. Staminus has excellent pricing on unmetered connections so we were looking into them to use for a US provider.

I have searched the forum and haven't found many reviews on their unmetered connections, more on the DDoS protection. Does anyone have any recent experiences with their unmetered connections they have been offering with great prices?

Staminus 3+ Year Review

Oct 29, 2009

I'm not sure if I ever posted a staminus review before. I know I always meant to but anyway, here is my 3+ year review of staminus.net.

Prelude
I started my hosting company in Aug 2005. It first started with a site I had that got pretty popular and I needed to get a dedicated server cause I was getting kicked off shared hosts and the ones I didn't get kicked off of were fly by night ops that quickly folded. So I get the box and all and start learning about linux and everything else. My first server was at rackmounted.com - a truly great bunch of people that helped me in every way and never lost patience with me. I will never forget the guys there.

The first few months I had enough site donations to pay for the server but I eventually spent more time experimenting and learning my linux desktop and server that I didn't update the site much no more. Then the donations came to an end. Then I started selling hosting under felosi-inc.net domain. I ended up getting enough clients to pay for the server and then some. By that time I was spending all my time on hosting related things that I pretty much abandoned the site. Now I was hosting full time.

I quickly found out that it was very hard to compete with regular hosters. The people I knew and myself always was having problems with ddos so I decided to specialize in ddos protected hosting. At first it worked out but eventually I had to leave rackmounted because they didn't have ddos protection. This is where my journey for a good network began.

The Journey for a Good Network
The first ddos protected network I tried was sharktech, I was there around 5 months. The network outages, not so nice support staff, lack of any ddos stats and null routes instead of filtering made me leave there. Had I stayed I would have went out of business.

My second ddos protected network was awknet. Justin is good guy and all but he is the only one. I could never get no definite answer on how much he would filter for how long from him. It also seemed he had to manually add filters and such, the server stayed down until I could get ahold of him. There was a few fairly long network outages, one lasting 2-3 days if I'm not mistaken. After that and some other issues I decided to try another.

My third ddos protected network was gigeservers. I found out the first day it would not work as there was 80 mbits incoming syn to the server making it unresponsive. When asked they said they just rate limit the attack not filter it all and would not do anything to help me. So I left that server within a week.

My fourth ddos protected network was softlayer. This really didn't work out. Their sales people told me "oh yeah, ddos protection, cisco guard, ya ya" but I came to find out at that time they had to manually add the ips to the cisco guard and would only filter it for 24 hours. After a month or two of doing this I experienced downtime each time until the ip was added and I also had to haggle with their techs to get them to even add it. I asked to speak to a manager once and he told me their network was not for frequent ddos and if I continued as I was doing they would have to let me go.

My fifth ddos protected network was justedge which was no protection at all. Everything came through, he did refund me though and told me that he gave me the login for some firewall at first to mitigate the attacks. He never gave me any information for any firewall.

Home at Last
I had dealt with staminus before as I had a friend who I helped manage his server there. At that time I didn't think staminus was any good as this was the time those low bandwidth dc++ syn attacks were prevalent and I got creamed. I actually went in IRC and argued with Matt for a while over this. Eventually I found out that the attacks that was creaming the server were only around 5-10 mbits, but they was still a b**ch to mess with.

I got a server at staminus, moved all my clients over there. When I seen their custom firewall and attack alerts I knew this was what I needed. Also another great feature of staminus is that any huge attack will be auto null routed instead of consuming the server. Every place I went to before I had the server consumed many times, At staminus this has never happened to this day!

And finally the loyal clients who had stuck with me through the journey was happy and I started to get more clients. There has been a few network outages but nothing worth leaving for. The protection is also the absolute best you can get for the money. The secureport protection is amazing as well at a fraction of the cost of other specialist services.

At first I thought since staminus was only Matt I would have pretty much the same situation as awknet where I had to wait until he came on, but Matt is truly a 24/7 on call person and now he has John there to help him - another great guy. But in reality you rarely ever have to contact support as everything on their end is usually good. Their support is great, fast and they have never lost patience with me. I cant put a number on the times I have put in emergency tickets saying the hardware is bad only for it to be something on my end

I just cant say enough good things about staminus, had it not been for me finally settling down at staminus I don't think I would have the business I have today. For ddos protected networks there is no better then staminus hands down.

Now my entire high risk operation is hosted at staminus and I don't plan on leaving ever. Thanks Matt for the awesome service, support and not losing patience with me, you are the best.

DDos Botnet

Aug 19, 2008

Well Using Apache It Can Be DDosed Off Very Easy If Not Setup Correct

Now Thing You Wanna Do Is
Set 25 Connections Per Ip
In Firewall

So That Only Allows Ip 25 Connections
Botnet DDos Attacks Always Use High Connections Like 50 - 100
And With It Set @ 25 It'll Ban IP Faster

Normal User Should Only Have 12 Connections To Server

APache Settings I Would Say How To But I Dont Have Apache Right Now
I Use Lite Speed

Botnet Found

Jan 5, 2008

Our Security Technician found yesterday a 200 user botnet on a hidden IRC server and was able to quickly email the compromised systems information (just hostname) to our abuse email. So today i spent the last 2 hours sending emails off to web hosting companies, educational institutions and corporate companies telling them that their systems have been compromised, we regulary email out systems we have found compromised. The thing that stuns me is that most of the systems we found compromised on IRC are dedicated lines between 10MBPS to 1GBPS... I found a few hosting companies and will list them so they can be found by them:

Botnet Hosted At Wholesale Internet

Jul 23, 2007

Been having an annoyance lately, This kid has been ddosing a site on my server for 3 days. It has absolutely no effect on the server besides filling up iptables rules and annoying the crap out of me with ip ban emails. So not really a problem as far as knocking my server offline but the guy has been trying for 3 days and its annoying as heck.

So I got someone to track the net down for me its located on
208.110.**
port 5050 and port 5520.
I will post the full details if it is ok with mods

So I emailed their abuse the other day, no response, tried calling, nothing but answering machines. Nothing has been done.

This guy must really have some connections inside datacenters because I was seeing where he had botnets on fdc, they got reported and fdc sent him the abuse reports so he could attack them some more!

[url]

Yes this really happened and fdc even protected the guys identity by editing his name and info out of the complaint post

Anyway, I get to talking to some other webmasters, he has had his botnet on wholesaleinternet a few months now. It has been reported repeatedly with no action taken, no one can even get ahold of anyone at the datacenter. So either they just ignore the same abuse report for months or they know exactly what he is doing and dont care. Either way they wont shut him down for nothing,

Ive sent reports to the registrar today, lets hope they are the ones to take action. And hopefully someone who works at wholesaleinternet will see this thread and finally be shamed into doing something. or if anyone knows anyone who works there please pass this on.

VB Forums On VPS Hosts

Jun 18, 2009

I run a small vb forum that is quickly expanding beyond the shared hosting plan we currently have with GoDaddy. So far we have been looking at VPS as a solution that would allow us to grow as we grow.

I hope I'm allowed to ask this, but I am looking for examples of vb forums that have about 100 concurrently logged in members and examples of vb forums with 200 members concurrently logged in and are running on either KnownHost or WiredTree (or an alternative service).

Please provide a link to your forum, the name of the host, and the VPS package you currently have. Finally, please let me know if you are utilizing Litespeed.

I'm hoping this will become a great resource for growing community owners looking to take the next step.

I am running Apache 2.2 on CentOS. I really want to install mod_security to lock things down. But I saw where there were some issues with mod_security and forums. I plan on having a forum live on my site shortly. I found this bit of info:

If you install mod security on the server, some forums will not work properly as this will compare each pattern which is posted against the rule set and will block it if found matching.

Is anyone using mod_security with a forum currently?

Lunarpages Service Is Poor And They Censor All Criticism On Their Forums

Nov 24, 2006

I'll second what is said about Lunarpages. They are an absmal McHost whose priority is to lure in as many customers as possible without bothering about the quality of their service. I challenge anybody to ring their telephone support line and see if somebody picks it up. I have tried to call ten times in the last six months and never been able to get through once, despite hanging on for ages.

Just today my entire website was down because Lunarpages moved it to a new server (without asking me) and screwed up. The website, Azam.biz has over 17,000 references to it in Google and is critical to my business. I sat drowing in sweat for hours. I couldn't get hold of anybody at Lunarpages by telephone or live chat and the one support response I received ws addressing an unrelated issue.

Worse thing of the lot is Lunarpages censors criticism them on their forums more so than any webhost I have ever know. Every time I post a comment about downtime or not being able to get hold of anybody on the telephone, they delete the post saying it is "incorrect". I have never met a company with such a Stalinesque censorship policy.

I have feared posting anything negative about Lunarpages on other forums because I've been worried about them closing down my account. But, after having suffered so much stress because of them today, I don't care any more.

I am going to back up by entire site now, because I'm worried they will close down my account after reading this. They are not the type of company to take on board criticism and use it to improve their offerings; their obsession is to stifle any criticism.

I am now suffering pain in my heart for the first time in my life because of how badly Lunarpages have treated me today. Their arrogance shows no bounds - they are smug, full of hype and don't give a damn about ruining customers' businesses.

Hosting Review Site Or Top 3 Hosting Co. For Shared Hosting

Apr 23, 2009

I'm trying to find at least three web hosting companies to choose from to host a Joomla websites on a shared server. Would consider dedicated if the deal was right. I have a friend of mine who wants to create a church website, and is looking for the best deal. I use Netfirms which I have never had an issue with, but I didn't want to be bias, and would like give him other options to choose from.

Is there a good WebHosting Review site, I could check out, or maybe someone could recommend their top three. I reading threw the forums here and I noticed there are not that many complaints with Hostgator. Again, I just want to see if there was anything out there better.

Your Opinion As A Customer: A Hosting Provider Who Couldn't Provide E-mail Hosting

Jun 4, 2009

Lets say you're a customer looking for web hosting, but do have technical experience - you know, you develop your own websites, you've had experience in this sort of thing before.

What if you came across a provider who seemed to offer a good service, they're high quality, they can host your website on their brilliant setup etc... but they do not provide any e-mail accounts with your hosting?

We're developing our own shared hosting setup, our own control panel too. Regardless of the control panel though, we wouldn't feel comfortable hosting peoples e-mail. We have plenty of experience in every other aspect of general shared hosting - but not looking after e-mail accounts nor the associated software.

To be honest I don't think that many shared hosting providers truely handle e-mail properly, and that job should really be left to the professionals.

We could of course guide customers or potential customers on why we won't offer e-mail accounts (i.e. not wanting to offer something we know we can't provide to a high enough standard) and instruct them on how to setup e-mail with another provider (such as Google, who will do this for free with limitations).

The alternative to the above is that we mask in a third party to look after e-mail, i.e. resell someone elses e-mail services as part of our hosting packages. The third party would require API access to setup/remove accounts..

What do you think? Are we just acting stupid trying to provide web hosting without e-mail hosting included? I noticed a while back Dreamhost encouraged their customers to use an alternative e-mail provider!
