Should Clients Pay For Server Upgrades

Feb 14, 2008

I am a host reseller and the parent company is upgrading their servers to PHP5. This may break some of my clients' sites (OSCommerce, Zen). Should we fix those sites for free or should my clients pay for the upgrade?

Upgrades

Jun 21, 2007

ive got a one of my personal sites - (a fairly mysql heavy chat community that works on mobile phones aswell) and its running on a cheap dedicated server

the specs of the server at the moment are -

celeron 2.0GHz
512mb ram
120gb ide disk
1500gb bandwidth
linux centos 4 no control panel

now i never come close to using my bandwidth so thats fine.
but ive noticed when i had around 30 members online last night the server load spiked at about 3.5 so im wondering if anyone can suggest what would be the best thing to upgrade to reduce load.

im currently running apache serving the dynamic files and lighttpd hosting images on a different port. using php 4.4.7 with eaccellerator. mod_gzip is enabled in apache due to a need to reduce the size of pages as much as possible.

the ram and disk usage is as below

Code:
Uptime:
09:03:35 up 39 days, 13:38, 0 users, load average: 0.47, 0.34, 0.24

Mem: 495 487 8 0 70 176

BurstNET Upgrades

Sep 17, 2008

Just got the email:

BURSTNET Network Maintenance Advisory - Saturday, September 20th, 2008 - 2AM-4AM EST WINDOW

BurstNET™ Network Engineering will be performing maintenance in our Scranton facility during the hours of 2AM and 4AM EST on Saturday, September 20th, 2008. At this time, BurstNET™ Network Engineering will be performing a significant upgrade/replacement of our existing network infrastructure. This upgrade will involve removing/replacing our older/out-dated core Cisco™ GSR & Extreme Summit™ routing/switching equipment, with newer state-of-the-art Cisco™ 6500-series routing/switching equipment, and implementing a new network design---allowing for easier upgrade, higher fault-tolerance, additional capacity, and extra redundancy.

This maintenance will be service affecting, however, we expect the overall network downtime to be 30 minutes or less, during the 2-hour maintenance window, with the majority of that occurring at the start of the work...as equipment and cabling is changed. There will also be momentary periods of higher than normal latency while circuits are re-routed, BGP updated/reloaded, and cabling switched, throughout the 2-hour maintenance window. Proper planning, configuration, and testing has been completed in advance of this maintenance period, in order to minimize as much as possible the overall time that will be service affecting.

This maintenance is necessary in order for further growth of the BurstNET™ network, as well as to implement additional redundancy into the network. This should also help resolve any latency and packet loss issues our clientele may have been experiencing in recent weeks. BurstNET™ has recently hired new Network Engineering staff, and this is the first step in several upgrades/modifications they will be making to the BurstNET™ network over the next 60-90 days, to expand reliability, increase capacity, install further redundancy, and increase performance network-wide.

We thank you for your patience and understanding with this necessary maintenance, as well as for your continued business!

Sounds like a pretty major upgrade (they've been upgrading a lot recently). Here's to more uptime and redundancy at BurstNET!

Lastly, a quick point to the army of Burst-haters out there: go check outages, BurstNET has had two great months for us (99.9%+ uptime). Stop hating .

FDC Network Upgrades - Comcast Etc

Jul 1, 2008

it looks like FDC is taking more pain than usual in terms of network upgrade, i see the network seems unstable till 5am and even now the sessions are getting lost, once in a while like once a hr, anyway this is not the reason i am writing this, but when did comcast become transit provider, i did a trace to UK for example and i see trace going through comcast and then hopping onto tiscali/level3, it looks to me like, comcast could be trying to even out (1:1) it;s carriers so that they get all inbound for free sort of and it;s upstream selling as a transit make money there. sort of, just a surprise to me at this point

VPS Provider Which Handles Upgrades Well

Sep 30, 2008

I've decided to move from my current provider (which I have praised many times on this forum before) because I'm just not getting the service I expect.

I'm specifically interested in a provider who is able to upgrade a VPS quickly, efficiently and on time, with no excuses and without "forgetting" things.

If you have experienced more than one upgrade with a provider which has been handled exceptionally well, please point me in the right direction.

Domain Name Server (DNS) Service For Clients

Dec 11, 2007

So my the other day one of my clients rented a Windows 2003 server. Has no idea on how to run DNS server on it and demanded us to do something about it. Since he had no management plan, we let him know that if he got himself a management plan we could help him out - but looks as though he was on a tight budget and couldn't opt in for it. Same thing happened last week and again one yesterday!

To help these customers out I was wondering if I could start a DNS service. Each client would get access to it for free regardless of their operating system or management plan. They could point their domains to the nameservers and use the DNS service to point the domain's A records to their servers.

From the start, I have been using EditDNS and still using it. But coming to think of it, its getting more unstable day by day even though they have 5 servers spread across the globe. I am planning on to move to EveryDNS. With this move, I'd like to use their services for my clients too. Rather than running my own DNS servers - I feel this could work out more efficient and reliable.

So what I am planning on doing here is more like creating private namesevers to mask EveryDNS's nameservers. Then have a custom script site built to interact with EveryDNS's APIs. Sounds like a good idea? Then my customer uses the script's interface to create/delete/edit records, etc.

Anyway I need some advice, suggestion or help in this matter. Has anyone tried this stunt out before? If so, how successful were they/you? How are your customer's reaction towards this (satisfied or not?). Does it stay efficient? (both in terms of money, time and energy spent).

Also, if anyone could suggest me any programmer who could do this for me (someone well versed with DNS/EveryDNS on PHP/MySQL) it would be nice.

Edit: I guess ServerBeach/Peer 1 already has implement this. If anyone really knows whats going on there - please share.

Yeh... didn't work, now I can't get my email through Outlook 2003 or ThunderBird. Any ideas on how to reset my mail server? I don't know if it's just the mail folder that's messed up or what.

Windows Server Hacked And Files Transferred Using Torrent Clients

Nov 8, 2007

I have noticed in a few Windows server tha the server gets hacked and there are tons of files which are mostly DVD rips and games being transferred away which results in huge amount of data transferred and bandwidth consumption increasing to as far as 29 Mbps. On further investigation, I find that all the files get stored in either the Recycler directory or the System Volume Information directories in any of the drives. Now these two directories are protected operating system files. Even if there is a windows firewall installed, there is no difference. I have even noticed that in some servers there is an automatic exception rule added in the windows firewall enabling the torrent client to communicate outside the server. This seems to be a common problem with Windows 2003 server and seems to be some backdoor of Windows allowing hackers to use the server for seeding. Has anybody come across such a problem or know the solution? Kindly help me with this.

How Much For A Set Of Clients

May 21, 2009

I will soon be meeting a few people who plan on selling their clients to me that are currently hosting with them.

I have never bought/sold clients before and would like some guidance from the community here on WHT.

Correct me if im wrong.

I should consider purchasing those clients who's contracts are going to expire soon, preferably within the next 6 months atleast?

Should i or should i not purchase clients who they have recently taken a renewal fee from that will last for atleast another 6 months?

How will calculate on what prices they should be selling their clients to me for? Are they going to add up a years worth of hosting before they set a final sale price?
At the end of the day i dont want to take on clients who have already paid for their hosting and wont be expiring anytime soon. I think, if i take them on board now they will be using up my hosting resources at my expense which i will have to wait until their next renewal is due.

The guys i will be buying the clients from have their current hosting plans as follows:

Monthly prices range from £1.90 £5.00 £9.50 £15.50,

Yearly prices range from £19.00 £50.00 £95.00 £155.00

Depending on what packages their clients are on now, how much do you think on average 5 clients would be worth roughly?

Before i purchase what else do i need to look into?

What other questions do i need to ask other than the likelihood of how long they expect their clients to stay with them/(me).
