As a personal project I've recently began thinking about setting up a CDN (sort of) with my various servers around the world. Basically, what it will do is.. From one 'management' point or portal (you can assume one physical server), each user can update/create their webpage there..
From that main node, it will have to replicate in REAL TIME:
a) userdir (public_html etc.)
b) mysql db's (circular mysql replication?)
c) Any updates to their apache.conf, php.ini etc..
Now I've been looking into several options.. drbd seems to be one that a lot of people suggest for the actual data sync, but I'm wary of implementing something like that outside of a local private LAN. I've also looked into rsync/unison which may work.. I'm just throwing this out there to see what people have tried and are using.
DNS will be handled by a GeoIP/Maxmind bind patch, and closest server will be given by my DNS servers. Closest 'mirror' of the user's site will be served via that hostname.
Anyone done this before or tried? The actual caching part of CDNs and etc. I'm thinking I could always just deal with via squid later, but for now the main guts is what I'm concerned with.
I'm kinda new to apache and I have the following situation.
I have a vps, on which I have set the following:
WordPress Site A, has it's own VirtualHost and domain WordPress Site B, has it's own VirtualHost and domain Canvas LMS (not connected to a domain). Canvas LMS can add multiple accounts, which may (or may not) be accessed individually using a URL that looks as follows:
{canvas_root}/accounts/{account_id}/
For example : http://....../accounts/4/
I need to add a link to each of WP sites, which points to each site's account on Canvas, such that it appears as .../learning/ folder
I do not want the users to see the /account/4/ , just /learning/ I also want to prevent accessing Canvas LMS is located beyond the website's DocumentRoot I want this to work with both HTTP and HTTPS
I have a dedicated server which I access via remote desktop.
The firewall is not enabled. What kind of security should I have on my server? Ive read that if I enable Windows Firewall my remote desktop connection will be blocked & this will mean me having to contact the server company via phone etc.
I really hope I'm just going batty with sleep deprivation, because this is making no sense to me. Before I clobber my poor provider with management requests, I want to see if this is typical behavior or not. I am able to send messages through my SMTP server from my laptop without using any authentication at all. It doesn't matter whether I'm using a client (tested Mail.app and Mozilla Thunderbird) or whether I'm going in via telnet. A typical session might look like this (addresses obfuscated):
asdfasdfasdf:~ ###$ telnet mail.fakedomainname.com 25 Trying ##.##.##.## ... Connected to mail.fakedomainname.com. Escape character is '^]'. 220 fakedomainname.com ESMTP Exim 4.67 Wed, 30 Jan 2008 00:56:03 -0800 HELO [192.168.2.1] 250 fakedomainname.com Hello reverse.verizon.net [##.##.##.##] MAIL FROM:<nonexistentuser@fakedomainname.com> 250 OK RCPT TO:<myvalidaddress@gmail.com> 250 Accepted DATA 354 Enter message, ending with "." on a line by itself
This should not work . 250 OK id=1JK8kZ-0004Xx-7O quit 221 fakedomainname.com closing connection Connection closed by foreign host. asdfasdfasdf:~ username$
I was expecting to see a "550 authentication required" message after it saw that "RCPT TO" wasn't a locally-hosted domain. I did confirm that the message was properly delivered to the intended Gmail address. So far, it looks like an open relay. But when I use a third-party environment, such as the open relay checker at abuse.net, I am correctly seeing "550" messages at the appropriate places.
In other words, when anyone else does it, they get "550". When it do it from my laptop (from any client or telnet session), I'm clear to send. Just to add a little zest to the situation, when I did this same test 36 hours ago, I *was* getting "550" errors.
This doesn't seem right to me. However, my mail admin skill level is approximately zero, so I'm willing to accept that this is normal behavior and that I am overlooking the obvious.
I am setting up a niche recruitment website where people can put online CVs, upload PDf CVS and search for jobs. employers can post vacancies and search for potential employees. Would shared hosting be adequate for this (it has all the MYSQL databases necessary) I am just wondering what sort of demand this makes on servers. I currently have a 1and1 professional shared hosting package or do I need VPS?
I have had a VPS with Digital Linx since December 4, 2008. I am more than happy with the service I have received from them. At first, their order and billing system was a bit wonky, but now it is working just fine. I have dealt with support a few times, and they have been very quick to respond. Their MSN support person is online a LOT. At one point, there was a heavy load on the VPS. I msg'd support on MSN and they were already dealing with it. It was fixed in 5 minutes. They were also quick to set up TAP/TUN, and were really good when I said I was going to set up the VNC I am currently running.
They have added a number of good VPS images since, including 2 VNC images. With this, the offer more than most VPS providers. Their support people have always been very quick to respond, and their prices are very competitive. I am thrilled to get this level of support for the amount I pay.
I currently do not have any website hosted on that VPS. I am using it as a VNC server/remote office. But, just so you know, I am posting from it! I have reported my domainname/IP.
I highly recommend Digital Linx. They are one of the best value VPS companies I have dealt with, and I have dealt with a few.
Currently configuring my VPS, have been for a while now, and am relooking at the security I'll need on it. The VPS will be running something similar to a CMS/Forum site and won't be offering webhosting. Alot of the security measures around here are webhosting orientated. What security procedures does everyone suggest for my situation?
I've got APF, BFD and restricted root SSH access. Is there anything else?
After upgrading the panel from 10.4.4 to 11.5.30 Update #23, I am not able to sort domains based on the "Renewal Date" column. With 10.4.4, I was able to sort. Is there anyway I can do this on 11.5.30?
I have two domains as virtual hosts on same IP address.
I am getting certificate error for the second domain when I try to check email (using MS Outlook). I can't permanently "accept" certificate, it complains again and again. Certuficate I created and self signed for imap.domain1.com, but the second email server is imap.domain2.com, so it complains.
How do I set separate email certificates for two domains? Is it possible at all?
Depending on where u are at on my site (documents pages, training, main root, etc.) will depend on which type of background, footer, header and the like you'll get. Now I was thinking. Is there a way to have multiple error messages for more then one page depending on where you are at on a site? Right now it's intranet site and a modded snitz forum. What is the code and were does it go and in which apache conf file(s) does it go in?
1. Point me to an article you can validate as being accurate; or
2. Explain to me as much as you are willing to the following question:
How would someone setup a CDN to compete with companies like level3/softlayer/peer1 etc..? What kind of software is used? Is there special routing issues to address? I do understand you need *at least* 15-20 nodes before you can offer a "true CDN" and I do understand that they need to be in different locations on the POP's. How do you stream files over the CDN as well? Via RTMP?
to add a new domain name to my hosting account, when I put in the nameservers at namecheap, my new domain resolves to the wrong IP address.
When I contacted my host, they told me I need to contact namecheap and give them the IP address and my namservers names.
I have never had to do this before. Usually I just add a new domain in my WHM and everything works. Right now namecheap is using my hosting companies nameservers, when I try to switch to my name servers namecheap comes back with an error.
I added new zones in the WHM for my name servers, but nothing is working.
What do I need to do to get this working? I have one current domain name that is working and one that is not.
I have already one dedicated server which I use for shared hosting and for my companys site.
I have read something little about managing VPS and can say that I want to use OpenVZ for that but that's all of my knowledge.
1. Howto setup VPS box (openVZ)?
2. Do I need leave free space/resource for "management" or can I use all space/resource for clients. I have my companys site and stuff in different server (as you can read above).
3. VPS box security? Do I need to worrie about that?
4. If I want to offer multiple OS options for clients, is it possible and how that is done?
5. Is there any "VPS control panel" for clients? For reboot, shutdown, re-install OS and such actions?
I have a dedicated server (windows 2003) with FDC i am new to all this so i need some help trying to set up a ftp so i can conect to the server, how do i go about this? are there any tutorials on this? i have looked on google but no luck. Also i am in spain so is it possible to use the server as a proxy server so i can connect with my computer in Spain to the internet with a US IP?
I've just recieved my copy of Kevin Yanks book "build your own database driven website using php and mysql" and very excitedly installed msql and php last night. As i have IIS i installed that too. Everything so far seems to be going as plan.
But i'm only wanting to use IIS for testing. Since i'm a newbie i'm unsure on some secuity aspects. Is it possible to use IIS for testing only, that is, no possibility of anyone else using it to access my computer?
I initially wanted to set up a VPS because I want to build a web application. The first phase is to set up a development environment, testing environment and production server. For the development environment, I want to set up an SVN server for my code (one reason why I chose a vps instead of a shared server) as well as a bug tracking system. Each environment would be under subdomains, except the production server (development.domain.com, trac.domain.com, testing.domain.com).
My question is what is the best way to utilize my VPS for this type of environment? Should I create a client for each environment? Stick everything under my admin account? I'm sure this is a simple question, but I just want to make my system as organized as possible.
At the minimum, could someone point me in the direction of any resources?
My first post on here! I have just signed up with a VPS, and before I did so, i asked if IMAP was supported, and that was confirmed.
Now, when I try to get it to work, I am told by support that my current mails transport agent (mailEnable) does not support IMAP, and that I should elect not to use mailEnable and configure IMAP with the Microsoft Services.
Now, here I am lost. What do they mean, and how do i proceede Thank you for any input!
Just got a new dedicated box (Fedora 5/CPanel/WHM). I didn't realize I had to set up my own nameservers with it. Definitely not a subject I am well versed in. Anyone know where I can find out how to get started?
I've just bought a VPS with [url], and they only offer cPanel (of which costs extra money per month). so I decided to install Webmin, which I have never used before.
how I set up my DNS servers in Webmin? I'm completely lost here.
I have a bare minimal server which I want to move WHMCS over to. However, how do I setup e-mails so I can setill PIPE them into the system? The e-mail server would be hosted on the main server still.
I am interested in setting up my own server, more than anything just for the experience. I would like it to be a linux-based server and to be managed purly through the command line [i.e. no GUI].
Can anyone point me towards any goods book/resources for learning this? From what I read I believe that sitepoints own book does not cover any command line stuff, and everything happens purly through the GUI.
