Servers Bandwidth - Incoming/outgoing

Jun 23, 2008

I was wondering what the difference is between incoming and outgoing bandwidth. I noticed some server providers have these types of limitations.

Does incoming mean uploading and out going is downloading bandwidth usage?

Incoming / Outgoing Packets Blocked

Jun 22, 2009

I am facing very unique issue at two of my servers hosted at hivelocity from last 3 or 4 months.

In every couple of days all incoming and outgoing activity get stopped except on port 3386 (RDP) i.e. no one can get website hosted on the server or neither I can access any website from the server but all other services continue to work. A reboot to the server will solve the issue but that is only a temp solution.

I have checked event logs one by one but no issue or error found on it. I have even run the server without firewall but still it stops working.

Scanned the server from 3 different antiviruses one by one but they didn't found any virus.

Datacenter tech staff monitored the server and found no DoS or other such kind of attack on the server or IP.

I am totally clueless on this issue on how to solve it.... anybody here who can help me?

OS: Windows 2003
Firewall: Previous hardware based, then software based and now windows firewall (same issue with all)
Third party softwares: No
Scripts: ASP, ASP.NET, PHP
Database: SQL and MySQL

No other software installed on the server

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Change Domain Name For Incoming / Outgoing Mail Server

Mar 11, 2015

I wonder if there is any chance to change the domain that is being shown as the incoming/outgoing mail server to users of the Plesk Panel, when clicking on the "Info"-Icon near an e-mail-account in the mail list (see screenshot).

We only have a SSL certificate for one domain and want our customers to use this domain in their mail client settings, so that the client trusts the domain.

Economics Of Incoming Bandwidth

Jan 26, 2007

It seems that colos usually have about a 10/1 ratio of outgoing/incoming bandwidth. Is about right?

How do colo providers typically pay for bandwidth? Do they usually have a huge excess of incoming bandwidth capacity? What would be a fair % of the outgoing price to pay for the incoming, assuming I had the opposite ratio of traffic?

How To Limit/block Outgoing Spam - CPanel Servers + EXIM

Mar 12, 2008

My server is sending all emails via exim smarthost to other specialised exim server (both cPanel). How may I limit customers from sending out SPAM ? Mean to scan outgoing emails and delete/store in some folder which ones identified as SPAM. Preferrably the scan part to be on exim email proxy cause it is much idle.

Monitoring For Group Of Servers, Services And Bandwidth

May 16, 2008

What's the best solution web-based that I can install on a server to monitor a group of servers, services, bandwidth etc.. I'm thinking of offering a service where for a monthly price we'll monitor your server(s) and notify the data center or client of outages. So I'm looking for something that I can create clients then under them enter servers and items to monitor. Kinda like a NOC monitoring solution?

Is There Any "Pay As You Use On Additional Servers + Bandwidth" Providers

Apr 15, 2008

This is my 1st post on this forum and my sole reason is to gain some valuable advice from members of this great community to my hosting predicament below.

We are currently developing an e-commerce website that has similar business model as woot.com. I believe you have heard of this website before as it is very popular in the U.S. Their business model is to sell 1 item a day and the sale will end prematurely if the quantity of the product is sold off before the day ends.

What I would like to bring your attention is that woot.com has a special event called “WOOTOFF”, whereby instead of selling 1 item a day, they would have successive items for sale JUST FOR THE DAY. On this special “WOOTOFF” occasion, there would be A HUGE TRAFFIC SPIKE FOR THE DAY as compared to their regular days. Traffic could increase 10 FOLD or more for this “WOOTOFF” event when compared to their regular daily affair sales.

OUR WEBSITE

As a startup business similar to woot.com, we intend to start off with only 1 dedicated server to handle our entire frontend, backend, and database web operation and to handle REGULAR traffic flow on normal day sales, in which we would expect around less than 5K CONCURRENT active users to visit our website on a daily basis for the first few months. There would also be a blog and forum as well on our site.

Since we will be having such similar “WOOTOFF” event (probably once every 2 – 3 months), the traffic will definitely increase multiple folds for that 24 hours and our 1 unit server definitely will not be able to cope with the increased traffic load. Also, it is not economical to just go out and rent extra dedicated servers to handle that spike of traffic load (in that 24 hours) whereby we will have pay for the extra servers based on the entire month’s fee. This means out of the 30 days in a month, the additional rented servers’ and bandwidth resource are only fully utilized for that 1 day while the remaining 29 days are sitting there idle.

Just to illustrate my point. Let say to handle our normal traffic flow, we have 2 present servers in place. When we run the “WOOTOFF” event and if we were to expect a 10 fold hike in traffic, then the additional number of servers we need to add is 10 x 2 = 20 additional servers. If each server rental costs like US$400.00 per month, we are looking at paying US$8,000 just for the rental of the 20 additional servers in a month, but are only used for ONE day to handle the traffic and bandwidth spike while the remaining days are left idle. This method and the associated cost involved to handle that 1 day traffic spike is not acceptable for us at all.

I HOPE YOU GUYS CAN SOLVE THE QUESTIONS I HAVE BELOW BASED ON THE ABOVE “WOOTOFF” SCENARIO.

1. Is there any dedicated server provider that allows for customers to only pay for the additional servers and bandwidth resources just to handle the additional traffic spike for that day’s usage?

2. I understand that there is a method to pay as you use method by utilizing Amazon S3 or CDN network but I’m completely clueless about how to go about this.

3. To your knowledge, what would be the most cost effective solution and how you’d go about it if you were in a shoestring budget whereby you’d only want to pay for the additional servers and bandwidth just for the day’s usage?

HERE IS A QUESTION FOR YOU BASED ON NORMAL SERVER UPGRADE OR ADDITIONS BASED ON STEADY INCREASE OF NORMAL TRAFFIC.

In the near future, if our website is recording a steady increase of NORMAL traffic and our primary 1st server cannot handle the increased traffic, of course we would have to add more dedicated servers whereby the newly added servers will be a permanent fixture paid on a monthly basis to take care of the steady increase of NORMAL traffic.

4. What would be your advice to me to load balance the traffic who insist on the most convenient, optimal and economical load balance solution to handle the steady increase of NORMAL traffic flow? E.g. server clustering, server mirrors, round robin DNS, etc as opposed to renting a load balancing router hardware from server providers that could cost like US$500+ monthly (rental + each server setup) whether it is being used or not.

this has started about 36 hours ago for no apprent reason (maybe an automatic CPanel update?) and I am not receiving ANY email (from no other servers either).

I tried to uncheck the options in WHM "sender verify" and "use callouts" but I still get this same error, would anybody know what this issue is? and as a quick fix, how do I disable the "${perl{checkspam2}}" and "${perl{democheck}}"?

Bandwidth Monitoring :: Create Bandwidth Charts Of Network Objects

I have a Sonicwall NSA 3500. Does anyone know if you can use it to create bandwidth charts of Network Objects (e.g. IPs or Groups of IPs)?

I am thinking something like Cacti, but I don't know the code to pull that info or if it's even technically possible.

Clearing Incoming Mail Queue

Nov 4, 2009

I had this spam problem on my server. Some perl scripts uploaded to /tmp folder were generating lots of spam email. We stopped sendmail, cleaned the server from all the bugs and erased all the messages in /var/spool/mqueue. Yet when I start sendmail again I begin receiving lots of autoresponders and returned emails. Where are those incoming mails located? In which queue?

How To Block All Exim Incoming Mail

Feb 24, 2008

problem with incoming spam to my server. Causing high load that eventually take down the server.

Since I don't use the server for my mail (I use Gmail), can anyone let me know the easiest way to stop/block all incoming mails to the server? I still need outgoing mail, though. Some of my PHP forms need it.

Right now, I stopped Exim to save the server (if it runs, load can get to 900+).

Extremely High Incoming Traffic

Dec 2, 2007

We've found out a abnormal usage of one of our servers, our RTG graphs shows:

Last 24h
IfInOctets: 30.5GB
MAX: 6.9MBits/s
AVG: 3.4Mbits/s
Cur: 4.7Mbits/s

And a strage traffic:
IfOutOctets: 42.5GB
MAX: 76.6MBits/s
AVG: 4.7Mbits/s
Cur: 600Kbits/s

We are running two websites on this server, and we looked at raw log apache, we've compilers disabled, we block most of outgoing / incoming packets on firewall, we ran chkrootkit, rkhunter and nothing was found. We checked for cronjobs, suspect files, netstat, but we can't see anything strange. We use the latest server software (apache 2.2.x), PHP 5.2.x, MySQL 4.1.x, we have most of the server optimized.

We are running iptraf now, and it seems normal:
„  Incoming rates: 85.8 kbytes/sec
„  Outgoing rates: 636.4 kbytes/sec
Anyone have an idea? And some way to properly monitor incoming traffic? I'm looking to find how/where is the source of this traffic.

IP Based Virtual Hosts (Incoming HTTP)

Jul 31, 2007

I have set up IP-Based Virtual Hosts, as I have been requested to set it up for SSL.

I have successfully set up all redirects and routes using the IFCONFIG and ROUTE.

My query is this, I have noticed that each HTTP request actually has to come in through the Virtual IP address (which is assigned to each site) from outside. Else it just displays the default host. Does this mean I have to have a separate phone line and router for each web-site I wish to host?

I am using Apache on Fedora Core 6.

Incoming Spam & High Server Load

Dec 17, 2007

I'm having problems with incoming spam on my dedicated server the load average of the server is around 80 or 100.2 I know it's incoming spam because when I check the exim process I see a lot of ips from russia, germany, taiwan then I block that ips with the /etc/apf/apf -d ip command and then the load of the server drops down to 7 or less, so the cuestion is how can I detect and block the spammers ips automatically on the server? I have spam assassin running and blocks the spam emails right, the real problem is the high load generated for spamd application and all the incoming connections of the spammers ips on the server.

Server specifications:

Cent OS 4
Control panel: directadmin
Dual-Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 2214 HE
1GB RAM
Exim 4.68
Apache 1.3.39
MySQL 5.0.37

Hi. This is the qmail-send program.
I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses.
This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.

<my_email_address@our_domain>:

Remote host said: 550 5.7.1 <my_email_address@our_domain>... Relaying denied Giving up on 70.43.63.21.

I've made sure the MX records are in place on our nameserver, and I've verified this with DNS Stuff.

I seem to think the problem is on our ISP's end.
