Server's Log File

How can I get the complete server's log file?
I am familiar with accessing the log files from Cpanel but it gives me the log file for a specific site.
How can I get the complete server's log file?
I have a lot of questions here so if you can't answer them all I understand. even pointing me somewhere where I could get the answers would be appreciated; hardware sites focusing on server hardware, forums focusing on such, etc.
we plan to have three different types of servers:
- db server (self explanatory. mysql. for forums, mysql driven sites.)
- file server (lots of files around ~2-10MB, consistant 70mbps right now, but we want more room for upgrades. needs a LOT of storage room.)
- web server (lots of php files, but also static things like plain html, images, etc. also includes all misc services for the setup-- dns, etc.)
could I be given a rundown for which hardware each of the three should have? I don't need specifics, even just knowing that more ram is important here while cpu doesn't matter as much, or that the fastest disks available are a must, etc would all be valuable info for me. despite that, I certainly wouldn't mind specific hypothetical hardware configs.
for the database server I'm assuming the more ram the better. not entirely sure about the cpu? also not positive on disks...
for the fileserver, how much ram would be practical or useful? disk io will be an issue I'm because plenty of people will be pulling files at once so the disk needs to read from multiple places. scsi (and even raptors) are not an option as we need 750GB+ of space on a reasonable budget. more ram will take some load of of the disks, but how much is neccessary / reasonable?
for the web server I'm assuming cpu first, then ram, but it'll likely need less ram than the db server?
I'm more lost on the disks than anything. scsi on the fileserver is not an option under any circumstances due to $/GB. for the db & web server I'm willing to pay for scsi if the performance increase really does warrant the extra money, but I'd like to be convinced before shelling it out. if you have benchmarks geared at server hardware when it comes to disks I'd really appreciate it.
also, what's the best way to network these together when colocated? each one with a dual gigabit ethernet port and then the communications go to and from the router?
What's the best setup for me to have for a machine which will host web files that other servers have to read and serve to end users on the web?
For example, I have servers Web1 and Web2 serving the same content from Files1.
I assume it's best just to go with RAID 10 and be safe or?
More importantly for me, what's the best way for these systems to communicate? I.e.
what protocol should be used for the web servers to read the files from the file server?
I once used SSHFS for serving the same static files on a couple of machines from one location... but that's presumabely very slow (at the time wasn't a problem).
All systems will be running CentOS Linux.
Is it normal practice to have shared filespace that multiple web servers can access? Then I just provide my developers access to that filespace (one server, instead of multiple users on multiple servers) to manage files for different sites easily... right? (also meaning multiple servers can serve the same content)
So.. what would be the best way to do this? We're talking Linux systems here by the way. What sort of specs would such a server need?
I *think* it's NAS that I'm trying to get at.. unsure though if that's correct or not!
is there a low end server just designed for receiving and sending large audio and media files?
like CPU should be minimal, as long as it can send and receive large files to and from a main server which has apache + php + mysql running in it...
would this be cost effective?
What is the best way to share files/folders between centos/linux servers?
View 7 Replies View RelatedHello, we have a few web servers that run Windows 2003 Server and IIS for web page hosting. We develop custom applications and don't do "web hosting" per se.
What is the best way to do this in a load balanced environment? We have a Cisco load balancer out in front of these servers, but I'm curious about the following:
1) Is there a way to replicate IIS entries instead of having to configure the site on each server?
2) How does everyone handle file replication (hopefully in real time) across all servers?

I am configuring a new Plesk server 12.x based on Linux. I already have a Plesk server in 10.x on Windows and i would like to transfer all the data we have on this one to the new server.

How can we stop Plesk resetting the file permissions on a dll file that is found in
C:Program Files (x86)
??
Specifically,
we have a file, jmail.dll,
here
C:Program Files (x86)Dimacw3JMail
By default Plesk permissions are set to DENY for PSACLN.
But the JMail plugin cannot work with these permissions !
We change this to be ALLOW for READ & EXECUTE and DENY for WRITE.
And everything works fine.
But every time Plesk does an update it reverts it back !
This means that a number of our customers contact forms stop working !
I'm trying to do this

Today I found some cstomer on the servers make a link for named it file.txt and link it to other customer php file.
so that customer have the ability to show the other custoer file content when visiting the url because it is a text wile originally it is a php file.
the php file was a config file, so now he know the database password , and because he is in the same server he can use that databse.
the question , how to avoide this prolem in the future?
notes , the SuExec is rnning and the open_basedir protection is enabled, but the problem still exists.

I was wondering if it is possible to cluster 2 web servers and 2 mysql servers with only one server working as load balancer.
I am planning to use LVS (ldirectord and heartbeat).
Let's say I have 3 IPs allocated to the load balancing server.
111.222.111.222 (Main IP)
111.222.111.223 (Web Load Balancing IP)
111.222.111.224 (MySQL Load Balancing IP)
If a connection is made to .223 it would pass the request to one of the web nodes.
If a connection is made to .224 it would pass the request to one of the MySQL nodes.
Is it possible to do this?
If not, can I run, for example, nginx on 223 IP address to provide forward proxy? (Then it would not be able to HA but the main point is to load balance so)
Also, what would be the best way to keep the data same on both web servers? This is a web cluster for a very high traffic forum with a lot of uploads every hour so it has to do real time synchronization. I heard that DRDB is only one way and not two way so I'm not going to be able to use this.
I am just colocating servers and managing them myself, and renting services off of them. In the future I would like to start offering dedicated servers as well. I am wondering if many companies do this, or if its more of a general practice to just setup as a reseller? The worst part that comes to mind is thinking of how to do billing for the bandwidth per month. With my setup I would only be offering flat bandwidth packages (like 2TB a month) but even so, I cant think of anyway to automate it so WHMCS knows if they went over, if so, how much, etc.

I have a web site backup file (let's call it 'filename.tar.tgz') that was generated from a home-grown web hosting panel and is ~1.6GB in size. It is resident on a WinXP computer, but I also have it copied to a *nix machine.
I have attempted to restore the backup using the normal restore process provided by the site admin panel, but it will never complete because of the size of the file. So, I need to retrieve the folders/files from within the 'filename.tar.tgz' file so that I can re-upload the files/folders through normal FTP.
I have had no success extracting the files/folders when using tar, gtar, gunzip, etc on the Linux box. 7Zip won't open it either. The Linux terminal reports a 'stdin: not in gzip format' error when trying to decompress/extract the files.
What I need is the exact syntax (with any switches) that I can use in my Linux Terminal Shell for extracting this archive so that I can access the files within.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI've been recently trying to move an account between servers, but the backup file is always incomplete. I was told that it is possible there are too many files.
I decided to tar some of them and move manually, but I cannot access the tar file. I already changed all permissions (644), owner, group, but I still get 403 Forbidden error. Is it possible that the file is too big (9 BGs), and if it is, how do I change the file size limit?
