Server Crash With NyNoc
May 27, 2009
I have a dedicated server with NyNOC and earlier on today the server dissapeared off the net, wouldn't respond to ssh, http etc, nor pings
I submitted a ticket and the server got rebooted, went through the FSCK check and came back up ok, but now I'm concerned as to what caused it
Andy the technician said he couldn't find out the reason why and neither can I
I can only put it down to PERHAPS faulty hardware somewhere?
The /var/log/messages file doesn't say anything useful, the last entries show..

Decided to give a VPS a try back in November. Ordered through one the sales advertised in the offer forums, got set-up in less than 12 hours.
In terms of performance, the VPS works fine.
In terms of service, this is where the ball is dropped.
The issue is that they set me up in LA, and I'm on the East coast. So I've contacted support, asking if a move was possible. When they said yes, and I've confirmed that their offer to move it during the night was fine, I've even shut everything down to make things smoother.
The next morning, I receive an email telling me I will get another one once it's done... the following day, I receive an email that it can't be done, as I have a x64 OS and there is no space on the node.
So I let this slide, and decide that sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and decided to offer them to BUY another one, this time on the East coast, if they could offer me the same setup as I have on the West coast. They've agreed, and I did the order as they requested... That was around noon 2 days ago, and still nothing today...
For another example, I've requested a ticket because the /dev/tun wasn't configured properly in the container... I don't know what they did, but it corrupted my VPS so bad that I have to re-initialise it completly. Another example: I've posted a ticket that their gentoo image is faulty (no network support at all!), and to my knowledge this was still not fixed.
So yes, NYNOC has some cool ideas like an online chat, even offered an EYEOS desktop, forums, tips, and great prices... but for me now this ain't worth it much and will be canceling my accounts. I guess coming from VPSFarm has spoiled me (instant setup, quick support), and will be looking for a new provider.

I recently moved a client of mine to a dedicated server with a hosting company called the NYNOC. After losing a few weeks of data for my client in the incedent described below, I am wondering if what happened was industry standard, or this was a case of choosing the wrong hosting company.
After signing up and paying the initial hosting charge, I received two notices - one on 18 july, and the second on 26th july - for a bill that was due 25th july.
On 2nd august I get a complaint from my client saying the website is down. I figured the hosting company had cut me off for a late bill. Fine, I figure i go and pay the bill and the reconnection charge and they put me back on.
After waiting 8 hours to get a support person (they dont have 24 hours customer service), I was told that I no longer had a account with them! No client log in. No server. Nothing. The disk was wiped clean and the server was sold to another customer. Without any warning that this would happen.
So my client lost a few weeks of customer data and I lost my credibility.
I was just wondering if this is standard practice in the dedicated hosting industry, or these guys are just bad news.
One more thing. When you talk to these people (they have only one customer support person) its almost as if they really really dislike their customers. As in, they talk down to you even as they exhibit complete disregard for your interests. This I know is not an industry standard. I have several accounts at Hurricane Electric, and they are tops. Unfortunately they do not offer well priced dedicated hosting.
I think I will try Interserver next. I spoke with one of the support guys on AOL late at night, and they seem good, and more importantly, are able to have a pleasant conversation with their customers.

As many of you may have already read my initial review or the New York NOC I wanted to leave an additional exit review of the company and share a personal recommendation.
It started a little over a month ago when I jumped VPS providers and initially purchase 2 VPS plans . Initially the boxes were rock solid. I could get to my websites, admin area, and have support tickets responded to in a timely manner. Roughly a week later I ended up moving another site to it’s own VPS . This is when I noticied my first issues. CONSTANT ERROR MESSAGES stating the backend was down and to please restart it.
I would launch a support ticket, roughly 2 hours later the backend would be rebooted and I could once again access the admin panel and do what I needed to. Like clockwork when I would try to login again later to my admin panel I would be hit again with the backend was down (hypervm would be in a constant refresh). Sometimes my sites would remain online and sometimes they would go down too. This got frustrating but was bearable (I thought). Within a few days I see a BIGGER problem arise. I woke up one morning to find error alerts coming in and realizing 2 VPS’s had been offline for hours on end. I again launch another support ticket for the backend to be rebooted. I get a response everything is ok so I go about my day. I later receive an e-mail stating all of my sites were showing a mysql connect error and panic. Come to find out they had corrupted this time when the backend went down, I repair and optimize and everything is ok. VERY next day I wake up and check my nightly logs to make sure the nightly backup was loaded onto my home server. I don’t see it and find I received an e-mail from lxadmin stating it could not backup the database. Once again…..corrupted. This has been going on since that time frame on almost a daily basis. The backups are iffy if they will come in since when the backend gets overloaded and crashes in the middle of the night, it immediately corrupts all db’s on the VPS. I could understand 1 VPS doing this…..but 3? Come on….
Now comes Thanksgiving, my boxes go down for roughly 5 hours before reboot and once again I have to repair them on a blackberry with ssh since I am away (never fun to type that on a bb). I am back online and go about my day…….then…..Friday. My box goes down at 5pm…..I send in a support ticket to have it rebooted. The next morning at 11am it finally gets turned back on and I get a response that it must have been on my end since everything looks ok from there (granted 3 monitoring services were all showing it down). Once again…..corrupted. I rebuild and think the SLA was 99.9% so I send in a nice message to ask about it. Here is the response:
Posted: 11/29/2008 12:33
Hey Guys.
Since one of the VPS accounts was down for 17 hours do I qualify for the 99.9% SLA?
(3 Monitoring Services show the outage happened at 5:34PM last night and I have recovery notifications for this morning at 11:16AM)
Thanks
----------------------------
IP Address: 71.76.239.xx Andy
StaffPosted: 11/30/2008 20:49 Hi Ryan,
Unfortunately our SLA applies to network uptime and not power or hardware related.
I'm sorry for the inconvenience.
-------------------------------
The New York NOC Inc.
www.thenynoc.com
Visit our new forums! [url]
So……99.9% SLA does not cover if no one is in the datacenter to reboot the box because it is off-line…..I thought SLA’s covered your box being on-line, am I wrong?
So now after too many corruptions to count, support taking longer and longer in between responses I am left looking over my books. Last year alone between Thanksgiving and the following Sunday I brought in roughly $2300 dollars in sales. This year for the past 4 days I have brought in $10…… I have had some longtime recurring customers so I asked them for any feedback on what we could do to earn there business again. Out of 40+ people all but one stated that if I could fix the sites downtime they would return (the other responses was of course to lower prices). Second suggestion they had was to fix my e-mails from ending up in their spam box. Yes I was sold ALL dirty ip’s which had all been blacklisted. Some major isp’s worked with me and allowed me in…(some)
Before I get flammed for choosing these guys, they truly were great up front so obviously I got fooled. I have no doubt they are great for some people but I simply can not drive my business into the ground because I went cheap and in the end got what I deserved. I moved to futurehost today and almost **** myself when a response ticket was answered in under a minute (kinda scary for a low priority ticket).
With this said, before you consider NewYorkNoc simply ask yourself if your business or site is important to you, if you can afford to lose business, and if you want constant downtime along with mysql corruptions daily. I am not saying they are the worst as they were helpful at first. Just EXPECT that when the deal is that good, you are being oversold. There is no other explanation in my books.
To sum this up:
Uptime: 3 out of 10 (there were up sometimes)
Customer Service: 2 out of 10 (would have given higher I did not have to repeatedly e-mail over the backend issues)
Price: 10 out of 10 (admit it, the price point these guys have is good)
Value: 1 out of 10 (I made a bad choice, I lost a ton of money in business and now have to work hard to recover my losses and rebuild relationships)
Recommend to others: 2 out of 10 (why 2? This place might be good for offsite backup maybe?)
This review is NOT out of spite due to my recent downtime. This review is merely my opinion and personal experiences and not written to bash NYNOC. If your happy with them then you are doing well. If you are considering them…….I urge you to think elsewhere. All my data is off the VPS and I am running before the backend crashes again corrupted my DB’s.

I have in my possession a new server which is running cPanel. For some unknown reason it keeps crashing about every 4-6 hours where I must get a remote reboot done.
Its starting to annoy me that I'm unable connect to anything. What I suspect is high disk red/write. As what I'm finding is over 10k blocks being written per second with only 300 being read per second. I also am not seeing any bandwidth out/in usage being high.

I reboot my cpanel server twice last night and it had crash
I am now running e2fsck and it's trying to fix the inode thing.. i've been pressing <y> 10000 times! Poor thing my fingers cramp
I've been thinking to mount my primary drive into another cpanel server (not a fresh server) as secondary drive and restore from there. The question is how? I need detailed steps by steps as it's urgent for me..

I just got a new server the other day, installed cpanel and all my usual stuff in it.
Then I started transferring some accounts off my other server on the same network. It would transfer small accounts ok but I have this one big account,. the sql is like 300 mb. It would get to the restore on it then the server would crash and be totally unresponsive.
It has to be manually rebooted at the datacenter. There is nothing in any logs. At first I thought it was the load getting hi and doing it but I ran the unix bench and got the load to 14 and it didnt hurt it.
It only does this on restoring big sql db. At the dc they say the screen on the console goes blank.
Ive done looked and cant find anything in the box. Its actually the same exact setup I use for my other servers.
So the dc is looking at it today. Has anyone ever ran into a problem like this and if so what was the cause?

The Apache server on one of my box crashed last night and the log file simply states:
[Fri Mar 09 23:51:49 2007] [notice] caught SIGTERM, shutting down
One thing puzzled me is that there are a couple of symbolic links created in Apache home directory:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 25 Mar 9 23:51 build;45f23959 -> ../../usr/lib/httpd/build
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 Mar 9 23:51 logs;45f23959 -> ../../var/log/httpd
They were created around the same time when Apached stopped.
Has anyone seen similar things like this? What could be the root cause?

So far my solution has been to re boot the server and it has been working but i need to find the cause of this...any suggestions on where to look or what to look for?

Should I be afraid of server crash incase server load goes up to 60 or 80 without ram and cpu usage rising that much?

I have a Linux server running some reasonable setups:
Opteron 180, 4 GB RAM, running 8x 36gb 15k scsi with hardware raid 10 -- this is one of the servers from WebNX advertised here not long ago
Running CentOS 4(?), Apache2/MySql 4/PHP5.2, the normal stuff.
I have only one main site on the server, which runs a pretty old PostNuke CMS in Chinese (0.7.2.3 Phoenix) + PNphpBB2 + Gallery 1.5.7 (all integrated into PostNuke). This site is pretty light in "human" traffic, getting about 20K hits per day.
Now, the problem I have noticed with this site, is related to the many MP3 files stored in the Gallery albums. There are lots of HTTP requests to these files, most maybe from Chinese search engine bots (judging from IP), that slows the server to a crawl and even crashes Apache. This happens in the late hours here when it's day time in China. As a matter of fact I just did a reboot, and in 5 minutes there are more than 1000 HTTP requests to MP3 files resulting in a traffic of 2.1+ Gb. So within minutes, the server is brought to its knees again and I can't even get the "apache status" from CPanel now: "Unable to retrieve apache status".
The company that manages the server for me said there's no security problem here. We have installed an Apache extension to limit the number of simultaneous requests to media files to 1. However that doesn't seem to help.

The company I work for unfortunately runs their site on a IIS server. I want to install some forum software, vBulletin or phpBB onto the server and run it on the same site. PHP of course needs to be installed to do this.
Boss is worried that putting PHP on same server as ASP might take down the site if something goes wrong. What are the odds of this happening if I follow directions and what steps should I take to install?

This is something i was wondering about and never found any answers.
Based on your experience, what are the most common reasons mysql tables crash?

No one could have missed that there was a DDoS attack on the DNS root servers last week. It’s been all over the news. It seems that aside from the G node (ironically the US Department of Defense) the rest of the nodes did ok (especially since anycast spreads out requests for 6 of the 13 root servers to over a 100 other locations).
In other words, the DNS root servers seem pretty impossible to take down (which is a good thing!)
But...
What would it take to bring down the DNS root servers? What weak links are there?
It would be interesting to have a discussion around this.

I run a web counter/tracking service on a dedicated server with 2x SATA discs (RAID1). There are about 100 MySQL queries per second, most of them are served from RAM cache, about 10-20 per second are inserts directly to disc.
My question: is it possible that this load physically damages the discs over time so that the disk crashes sooner or later?

I've a question, one of the dedicated servers with CentOS and Plesk 8.1.1 crashed. Critical system files were corrupted so it was impossible to start the server.
What we could do is backup;
/var/www/vhost/*.*
/var/lib/mysql/*.*
We installed a new server with same software (CentOS and Plesk 8.1.1), we placed the backupped directories back, restored the MySql database...
But how can we restore the settings? With putty / commandline we can open all restored databases. But we have a feeling that the PSA database is not connected with the Plesk admin (GUI)...
Our primary question, how do we get our settings back in Plesk (like accounts; clients, domains, dns-records and so on?)
