Server Mirroring To Create Separate DNS Locations

Nov 4, 2009

If anyone can help me in doing this, I'd appreciate it. I searched to see if anyone had already done this, but I didn't find anything so my apologies if this has been answered before.

Here's what I have: 1 dedicated server with a static ip of course and currently, I run all my sites off of this machine as well as my few clients. The server is running CentOS and Apache.

What I want to do is build a new server at my house/office and create a secondary webserver that mirrors my current setup. I've heard about using Rsync to do this, but I want to know if it'll allow for the balancing effect I'm looking for.

Rather than use this 2nd server as a backup only, I want also use it for dns resolution. Right now, all my sites are using two nameservers (NS1.2D.NET and NS2.2D.NET), but they both point to the same IP address at the same location. I want NS2.2D.NET to point to this 2nd server for redundancy (in case the other location goes down) and also for balancing (to spread traffic over two servers instead of just one).

Eventually what I'm going to do is move all my clients and websites to one location again, but my own location so I can save the expenses of dedicated hosting off-site. However, I want to use this setup as a test to see if my own location will be able to handle the traffic and such.

Accessing Our Server From Some Locations

Apr 20, 2009

Few months back we migrated to a new server (Layered tech Savvis to Databank)

All has been running smoothly, better than before the move.

Over the last week we have had reports from a few clients in various locations across australia and a few in the uk that they can not access the server.

The DNS is resolving correctly for them and traceroutes have not proven anything.

Layered tech have not been real helpful, eventually they put me onto their network department who ran a global test which came back as the server being accessible from everywhere.

The problem appears to be intermittent

Server Appears To Be Down From Only Some Locations

Apr 17, 2008

I have a client who says his site is currently down. He can not get to any sites on my dedicated server.

However, I can get to all sites just fine and have not seen any downtime. My host tech support says the server is online and responsive and has closed my ticket.

Ping tests (at www.just-ping.com) show severe packet loss from almost all locations (see screen shot below)

How else can I test if my server is visible from multiple locations? Are there other tools/sites I can try?

Server Locations And Linking Servers

Feb 10, 2009

I am starting up a mail order bride website.

I already have a server in Malaysia that I am using to run an asain based site. Off a .asia domain.

I am currently in Malaysia just now and I noticed especially on the weekends the networks seem to slow alot in Malaysia due to everyone playing games at the Cyber Cafes (its what they do instead of pubs).

While back in home the UK the Internet seems super fast all the time due to are advanced infrustructure.

Now should I use my server in Malaysia (ultra cheap prices) to host the site so or get a server in Europe preferably America?

The pros i see for Malaysia is the potential brides in asia will get quick access to the site.

The pros for Europe or America is the customer base will get quick access.

I might be wrong about this, maybe the speed wont; be affected to much either way, but I am a newb

Also if i was to have both a server in America and one in Asia could I link them together under that same site name? and how would that work with the database?

Connectivity Issues To VPS Server From Certain Locations

May 27, 2008

We have a VPS with Media Temple. Their data center is somewhere on the westcoast. From time to time we have severe issues to connect from our Brooklyn/NY locations. We experienced the connectivity issue from 2 physical locations. Doing a tracert gave us a good result.

There are usually 4-8 users using our shop admin for order processing or the shopping cart for manual order entry. While they are having problems connecting from there, I can connect just fine from Calgary/AB, Canada. Most of the time no issues at all.

how to debug that?

MySQL On A Separate Server

Oct 12, 2007

I have a server with lots of sites and about a hundred MySQl apps. All of them are configured to talk to localhost and work fine. But I'm trying to move the MySQL off to a separate box to increase performance.

So since everything was configured to localhost my idea was rather than change that what I would do is set up an SSH tunnel to the new server running MySQL. Seems like that should work, but it doesn't.

I set everything up on the new computer. I shut down mysql copied all the files over, started MySQL on the new server. Everything tested fine.

Then I established the ssh tunnel and everything looks good, but the applications just didn't see it. I did some experiments and if I set it to 127.0.0.2 it works, but not on 127.0.0.1.

Big Site Needs Separate Server For Mysql

Apr 8, 2009

my vbulletin site has been growing significantly and the server has crashed many times due to the high loads. My server guys tell me that mysql is hitting loads of 30 (not sure what that means) and i need to get another server for mysql alone.

They recommend that I shld go for raid-5 for the mysql server due to performance and redundancy. Thus if i was to upgrade now, I shld just go straight for a raid-5. Is that true?

Separate Email Server Routing

Feb 26, 2007

We have a VPS service with ServInt to host only our website (www.ourdomain.com for example) and not our email - the nameservers are also not on our VPS. This all works great but it means that any emails which are sent from our VPS to xxx@ourdomain.com are getting routed to the VPS and not the email server and so are being dropped.

Is there a way around this because ServInt support seem to be stumped because they have suggested the only way to fix it is to setup nameservers on the VPS instead of where they are now?

Server Mirroring

Mar 22, 2007

We are considering buying rackspace at a datacenter, and setting up two servers. The first would be the primary, lets call it Stewie. The second is called Peter.

Is it possible to setup some sort of either software or hardware solution that automatically mirrors all data from Stewie to Peter automatically?

Basically we want a redundant setup, where if either one of the server fails, the other can take over without any interruption and loss of data.

Mirroring Our Server

Jan 30, 2007

First of all appologies if this is posted in the wrong forum, was unsure of where to ask the following questions.

We have a web server running a web application accessed by a large number of users during a working day. On an evening the web server is set to back up the database to another web server at a different location.

The server is running SQL 2000 ( although we are just upgrading to SQL 2005)

My question is how easy would it be to setup our server so it "mirrors" to our back up server. What I mean by this is that at periods during a working day the database is transfered to our back up server at periodic intervals, say every 15 mins, so that in event we suffer a problem with our main server could re direct our users to our back up server, with little or no data loss?

If this is possible does it also put extra strain on our server that is being accessed, i.e. would users notice a slow down of server as data is moved about?

If all the above is possible, is there any easy way of pointing our domain name at the back up server within say 15mins or so of main server failure? if our main server went down we could not redirect users form main server to back up, so is there any method of making this happen in event of failure of main server?

Mirroring Live Server...

Sep 4, 2006

I'm a web designer - not an IT guy, as such I'm not 100% on setting up servers/dev environments etc...

I'm freelance and currently working in-house for a client that has set up a dev server that supposedly mirrors their live site - its a catalogue site with loads of dynamic elements.

The dev site they've set up displays only the html, no images or stylesheets link up when i preview them in dreamweaver as they don't logically link to the page as the pages are templates drawn from various folders.

What I want to know is is it possible to mirror a dev server exactly like the live website so the scripts etc all work as they do on the live site. I'm pretty sure it is as I've worked on dev servers before but not one like this bloody mess. The IT bods here seem to think the dev server is the best that is achievable - are they right? am I missing something???

I can't really answer any technical questions apart from i think the dev server is an apache server - what do i need to explain to the IT bods to get my point across?

Server Question About HDD Mirroring

May 21, 2008

Well I am looking to learn to manage a server (so I won't need to hire others to do what I can do). However I have some basic questions.

1) So lets say you have a server with two identical HDD's and raid 1?? or a SATA controller so that the second HDD is just a mirror of the first HDD when/if the first HDD dies does the SATA controller or RAID card see that the first HDD died and switch to the second HDD so the site that is hosted on the server stays online?? I am thinking yes as that would seem to be the point of having a raid or sata controller and setup ??

Part twoto the question is is their software that you need to install that will make the server email you when/if a HDD dies (so you can do pull the dead one out and replace it with a new one). Or is it just that you would watch some type of server log(s) to stay ontop of if the server is running all good??

Second is how common (these days) is it for a server that would be new and brand name have a HDD die or have some other hardware failure?

Mirror/Mirroring Server

Jan 29, 2009

A great insight to alot of my research and thank you in advance for any advice given.

I have a server based in HK(with WHMCS) and host several websites. The speed and availability serves the Asia Pacific market/viewers well; but we have several new websites that also targets the European and North American viewers.

I have been researching on getting a dedicated server based in US to mirror our server. Therefore allowing the US/European market to access the website faster. Although we have a few problems (and very little budget to solve it too ;p)

1. We need to sync the two servers in real time ; rsync seems to be the best but is there any other reccomendations?

2. We will make the IP address in each servers the same, so our clients need not change their dns. Do we need IPcast/anycast?

3. Is there anything else that I may have oversight?

Domain Name Server (DNS) Mirroring Question

Oct 17, 2006

This is my first post and had a question about dns and mirroring.

Here is the scenerio :

I have my main website on server1 and it is a whm cpanel server. The website is dynamic and database oriented website.

I have another server - server2 with whm installed on it and I wish to configure both the servers such a way that the data is synchronised on both the servers in particular intervals.

Also I would like to configure dns redundancy in such a way that if one server goes offline for some reason, the website should be immediately resolving from the other server.

Mirroring/Imaging Drive From One Server To A New One?

Jun 22, 2009

I currently have a dedicated server with a single hard drive in it with about 800 cPanel accounts. I am purchasing a new server with identical specs but will have 2 hard drives in RAID1 from the same data center.

Is it possible to make an exact image of the first server to avoid any configuration loss on the new server? I have already spoke to the data center about moving the current IPs to the new server and I know moving the cPanel accounts can be done in WHM but I would like to preserve all of the server settings, configurations, and background scripts that I have running.

Mirror/Mirroring Server Solution

Oct 29, 2007

My company requires a Mirrored Server setup. I hope someone can direct me to the right solution which guarantees the least downtime.

- We have 20+ php/mysql websites.
- We need two dedicated servers hosted in 2 different datacentres.
- Users are directed to the first server.
- If the first server is down the users are automatically directed to the 2nd server @ the 2nd datacentre.
- The software/hardware which redirects the users need to be fail proof or have an instant backup which takes over incase that goes down too.
- Data (databases and files) needs to be synced correctly to avoid data not being mirrored correctly.

I've done some reading and there is alot of mention of the DNS round and load balancers.

However, it seems these two options are also not fail proof.

Would appreciate if someone could simply outlining what system would be best for us for 100% uptime incase of server failure.

Setting Up Redundant Mirror/Mirroring Server

Jul 7, 2009

I have a LAMP server running and would like to have the exact mirror running on another location. I would like to sync the web files and database in either real time (upon any update) or in delayed mode (x minutes after the update).

For MySQL, I believe replication can do the job unless anybody has better recommendation. What would you guys suggest for web files? Can I use different Linux flavor but maintain back the same LAMP version?

Is there any "online" 3rd party load balancing service that I could use to load balance the traffic to both servers?

Windows Server 2003 Software Array Mirror/Mirroring

Jan 8, 2007

We damaged a file on a windows server 2003 system which caused us to get a grey screen where the login windows should be (it was setup as a domain controller)

We tried booting it in safe mode and all the other modes etc etc.... but to no avail... we couldn't get it to work.

So we wanted to replace the file manually using another pc (by inserting one of the harddrives into the pc, and copying the file to it).

We used a windows XP machine.... imported the harddrive using disk management..... we had to un mirror the drive to be able to access it.

Once the mirror was broken i gave it a drive letter, copied the the new file to it, and, removed the drive letter i assigned it, and tried booting with *just* that drive in the windows 2003 server.

Now it wont boot, it just reboots everytime i tries to start up, probably because we broke the mirror on a different machine.

It still boots from the other untouched drive... that was in the mirror, but we have no way to edit the files on there.

So is there any way to actually get this, once mirrored drive, to boot now its a single disc?

Locations

Jan 21, 2007

My group is thinking about building a dual xeon clovertown server that we will be using to hosting multiple gaming servers. We currently have a server at The Planet but would like to get away from that since their high performance servers cost $300+ /month.

With that being said I will need somewhere to get the box coloed and having trouble finding providers that don't charge an arm and a leg for hosting.

I have admins in Las Vegas NV, Huston TX, and Memphis TN so anyone of those places I can get good latency too would be ideal.

The best deal so far I have found was colo4dallas that would cost us $100/month for colo and give us 200gig of bw but I would really like the server to be located in one of the cities I listed above incase something broke and we needed to send someone in.

Can anyone recommend a colo provider in one of those locations?
