Separate Email Server Routing

Feb 26, 2007

We have a VPS service with ServInt to host only our website (www.ourdomain.com for example) and not our email - the nameservers are also not on our VPS. This all works great but it means that any emails which are sent from our VPS to xxx@ourdomain.com are getting routed to the VPS and not the email server and so are being dropped.

Is there a way around this because ServInt support seem to be stumped because they have suggested the only way to fix it is to setup nameservers on the VPS instead of where they are now?

Multiple Server Routing

Sep 14, 2009

I have an exchange server with the webmin interface activated. I have port 80 forwarded on the router to this server for the webmin. Management wants to upgrade data service and move website server in-house.

So this is how I'll need to set up 2 websites on two servers for the same IP.

Server 1: Windows. accepts domain mail.domain.com

Server 2: Linux. accepts www.domain.com

I'm figuring I'll need to make changes at the router level, and I have a decent cisco router. What do I need to do? Point me in the right direction for googling.

Would it be easier to use 2 IPs? Both would come over the same line, how would I handle that on the router level?

MySQL On A Separate Server

Oct 12, 2007

I have a server with lots of sites and about a hundred MySQl apps. All of them are configured to talk to localhost and work fine. But I'm trying to move the MySQL off to a separate box to increase performance.

So since everything was configured to localhost my idea was rather than change that what I would do is set up an SSH tunnel to the new server running MySQL. Seems like that should work, but it doesn't.

I set everything up on the new computer. I shut down mysql copied all the files over, started MySQL on the new server. Everything tested fine.

Then I established the ssh tunnel and everything looks good, but the applications just didn't see it. I did some experiments and if I set it to 127.0.0.2 it works, but not on 127.0.0.1.

Big Site Needs Separate Server For Mysql

my vbulletin site has been growing significantly and the server has crashed many times due to the high loads. My server guys tell me that mysql is hitting loads of 30 (not sure what that means) and i need to get another server for mysql alone.

They recommend that I shld go for raid-5 for the mysql server due to performance and redundancy. Thus if i was to upgrade now, I shld just go straight for a raid-5. Is that true?

Routing Two IP Addresses To One Linux Server

Server Mirroring To Create Separate DNS Locations

Nov 4, 2009

If anyone can help me in doing this, I'd appreciate it. I searched to see if anyone had already done this, but I didn't find anything so my apologies if this has been answered before.

Here's what I have: 1 dedicated server with a static ip of course and currently, I run all my sites off of this machine as well as my few clients. The server is running CentOS and Apache.

What I want to do is build a new server at my house/office and create a secondary webserver that mirrors my current setup. I've heard about using Rsync to do this, but I want to know if it'll allow for the balancing effect I'm looking for.

Rather than use this 2nd server as a backup only, I want also use it for dns resolution. Right now, all my sites are using two nameservers (NS1.2D.NET and NS2.2D.NET), but they both point to the same IP address at the same location. I want NS2.2D.NET to point to this 2nd server for redundancy (in case the other location goes down) and also for balancing (to spread traffic over two servers instead of just one).

Eventually what I'm going to do is move all my clients and websites to one location again, but my own location so I can save the expenses of dedicated hosting off-site. However, I want to use this setup as a test to see if my own location will be able to handle the traffic and such.

Sending Email To Another Server When The Email Address Domain Is On This Server

Jun 24, 2008

I currently have a domain on Server 1 (Linux, Apache, Ubuntu, Matrix control panel).

This server does not have any spam filter, so I have moved all the email accounts to Server 2 (Linux, Apache, Fedora Core, Plesk) which does have a brilliant spam filter; and have changed the DNS record for mail.domain.com to the IP address for Server 2.

Emails are being successfully received on Server 2.

On Server 1, when an email is sent through SMTP to an address at that domain, it does not send it to Server 2, it gets delivered to the hosting account for the domain on Server 1. So what I am guessing is happening is that Server 1 detects the domain has an account on the server, and instead of looking up the DNS info for that domain, just assumes it is on Server 1.

What I need to do, is force Server 1 to send email for that domain to Server 2. Is this possible, and if so, how can it be achieved? If more info about the server is required for a solution please let me know and I'll provide what I can.

Routing

Feb 21, 2007

I have a linux router with 2 external and 2 internal ports.

Each port needs to route traffic to one of the internal ports, and the internal traffic between the 2 internal ports should not go out the external ports.

The IPS on the internal networks are global. ie. no NAT required.

I think what I need is this..

$ext_net1 = external nework IP/MASK 1
$EXT_IP1 = ip of external interface 1
$ext_net2 = external nework IP/MASK 2
$EXT_IP2 = ip of external interface 2
$int_net1 = internal network IP/MASK 1
$int_net2 = internal network IP/MASK 2

ip route add $ext_net1 dev eth0 src $EXT_IP1 table 1
ip route add default via $ext1_gw table 1
ip route add $int_net1 dev eth1

ip route add $ext_net2 dev eth2 src $EXT_IP2 table 2
ip route add default via $ext2_gw table 2
ip route add $int_net1 dev eth3

ip rule add from $int_net1 table 1
ip rule add from $int_net2 table 2

The problem is that I've added a 4th server, I added it to the Webmux and it's get NATted to an 192.168.x.x IP. Now I just need to add it to the Cisco Pix, natting it back to the real IP BUT the Pix can only have one IP on its inside interface and the Server IP is not on the same subnet as that IP.

So when I try to add the real IP it asks me how to route it....

Internal IP Routing

Mar 24, 2009

I have a server that has multiple IPs, one of which I'm using for a VM that is bridged.

The issue is, internally, that IP is trying to point to itself rather then the bridged nic (which is technically a whole other server plugged into the same switch, logically).

I think I know why, I just don't know how to fix it. This is the config file for the ranges:

Quote:

# Intel Corporation 82546EB Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Copper)
DEVICE=eth1
BOOTPROTO=static
DHCPCLASS=
HWADDR=....
ONBOOT=yes
IPADDR_START=....243
IPADDR_END=....254
CLONENUM_START=0
GATEWAY=....241
NETMASK=255.255.255.240
NO_ALIASROUTING=yes

(edited a few things out just in case)

Basically, there's a start and an end, is there a way to exclude an IP?

Separate Sites On Same VPS

Jan 30, 2008

I have been running 1 site on my VPS for some time, but there is still a lot of things I don't understand 100%. Now I want to add another site to the VPS, but keep the sites as separate as possible, and I have no idea how to accomplish this.

Lets say my first domain is football.com. This means I have these settings:

I got 3 IP's: x.x.x.1, x.x.x.2 and a new one x.x.x.9

My hostname is host.football.com (x.x.x.1)
My site is www(dot)football.com (x.x.x.1)
Nameserver NS1.football.com (x.x.x.1)
Nameserver NS2.football.com (x.x.x.2)
Reverse DNS on x.x.x.1 to host.football.com
Exim running on x.x.x.1

Lets say my second domain is water.com. It's no problem using WHM and run this site on x.x.x.9, but there is a lot of references to football.com (nameservers, hostname and probably emails).

Is there anyway to keep the sites separate? I'm thinking that I need to request 2 new IP's, run NS1.water.com and NS2.water.com on these. I don't know if I can get a host.water.com with reverse DNS, and I guess emails will still be from x.x.x.1.

Zebra And OS Routing

May 5, 2008

I put together a router running Zebra(yes, I know, should have used Quagga) with a few public ip addresses taking in a full BGP table.

There is a Win2k3 server behind the router running routing and remote access for VPN clients to connect to. Our team's project was to get the win2k3 server VPN clients out onto the public internet with public IP addresses.

I installed another NIC card onto the Win2k3 server and connected it with the router, and assigned the router and the server a private IP address. Both are pingable from both devices.

I then had a VPN client connect in, RRAS assigned the client a public IP address, the router was able to ping the VPN client and so was the Win2k3 server.

I tried pinging the VPN client from another machine on the network with a default gateway pointed toward the router, and there is no response.

Is there something I don't know about with Zebra and Redhat?

Routing / Networking

I was changing ip routes earlier that day however all seems fine...

Oddly I can ping internally on the network and noticed a number of other servers in the broadcast range. These respond fine, however pinging google or outside the data center fails.

Theplanet Routing

Mar 10, 2007

I run a game server on The Planet, and lot of people have huge routing issues where their route randomly changes, and when it does, they'll get horrible packet loss and lag. It's totally random, one day it may happen to me, while it's not happening to someone else, then it will switch. But it's definately the host and not our home connections as it affects about half the server at any given time, it just picks different people.

Just wondering if anyone who uses The Planet has had issues like this? I pretty much debugged everything and tried everything to no avail and of course their support just said it's not at their end (all isps of any type say that regardless of the situation).

This is how a typical trace route would look like:

Routing Practice

Sep 6, 2007

Our colo has two carriers, call them A and B. I have discovered the colo provider is round-robining traffic out it's two carriers on a per-packet basis, not per flow.

Assume we want to reach destination IP a.b.c.d.

%> traceroute -q5 a.b.c.d

Results show that at the hop leaving the colo's border router, some packets transit Carrier A and some Carrier B, to the same destination IP, during the same traceroute.

Is this a routing Best Practice, or am I correct in thinking this is the Lazy Man's way of load balancing across multiple circuits, multiple carriers? BGP route selection does not seem to apply here (i.e., either Carrier A or Carrier B but not both at the same time).
