Savvis / Layer 3 Status
Aug 31, 2007Anyone else seeing packet loss / high latency? I was told that Savvis and or Layer3 are having some routing issues tonight.
View 4 RepliesAnyone else seeing packet loss / high latency? I was told that Savvis and or Layer3 are having some routing issues tonight.
View 4 RepliesI have 2 servers on LT SAVVIS data center (through Server4Sale).
Today I received mails from them that LT is migrating out of Savvis and so my servers need to be transported/built(!) at the DataBank facility. And the server IPs will get changed.
If the servers requires a build, that will mean ill have to configure/reinstall everything again. Thats apart from moving the client accounts from the old server.
Anyone else received the notice from LT?
Which DC is considered more reliable?

The second trace shows that there is a path between New York and Weehawken without going through Washington, even though the first route went through Washington between NY and NJ. The only reason that I can think of is that someone in Washington wants to see the traffic (wink wink)?
I've contacted Savvis, but got the stock response "Savvis’ backbone routers forward traffic through the optimal logical path within our network. Although the physical path may seem odd occasionally, it is actually the optimal path."
Which one has the best routes to Asia, especially South East Asia?

3Tera's AppLogic could be the expeditor of a lot of small and medium dreams. I read the whopping 28 pages thread about TGL, it sure got my juices running. With enough time, the grid could evolve into something close to a Matrix (and hence the thread title).
Yet it seems it wasn't stable yet (at that time). And 3Tera and TGL were talking about features yet to come. So my question is:
Is their service stable yet?
I currently have a rack of gear in a nice colo. At first this colo was established to provide for some of my own equipment. However, in the past year or two I have had several customers express interest - so I have started reselling some colo space to them.
Currently I have three network feeds from the provider coming into my cabinet. I am about to add a 4th feed. All of these feeds have been added so that my customers could have a dedicated connection to plug into their hardware firewalls.
Since I am growing and about to add a 4th customer, I am now trying to figure out how to simplify this, and better provide for future growth. I am thinking that the best way would be to have one "feed" from the provider. Then I would bring that one feed into a layer three switch which I could use to break the feeds out to my customers. This would also allow me to measure the bandwidth being used by each customer and bill them accordingly.
Does this sound right to you all? Also - any recommendations on a good layer-3 switch?
I received an e-mail that goes like:
"Data Center Migration Efforts Underway, from SAVVIS to Databank"
"The LayeredTech data center have informed us that in an effort to optimize the network architecture, they are planning to move all servers from SAVVIS location to a more centralized facility, the DataBank data center which is also located in Dallas."
I am interested in finding out any experiences people have had in the last year or so with Savvis or Net2EZ.
I'm primarily interested in experience with the IP connectivity they provide, as well as their co-location, reliability, etc.
I have experience with Savvis from quite a while ago, but presumably that experience may no longer apply.
It's likely we will end up buying transit from multiple carriers and deal with BGP, etc.
But I am also interested in hearing about Savvis's Diverse Internet availability product.
As for Net2EZ, I'd be primarily interested in hearing about their colo services and if anyone has had experience connecting to Carriers in the next door Equinix facility.
From the real experience, how many mbps can it process in layer3 mode with 10-20 VLANs?
View 8 Replies View Relatedi have two servers colo on the IDC,
i want to search for a Layer 2 Switch for them,
the bandwidth we use now is about 5-10Mb only.
i hope the switch is reliable, but not expensive,
i do not need a lot of feature, just reliable for the connection for my service.
i find some cheaper switch,like d-link,ProCurve,
Is there a colo provider that has a free private network for use between their locations, similar to what SL has for their dedicated servers between facilities? They have 10GigE between their locations, with free unlimited usage.
We have around 40 servers now, and colo would really make sense, but we are doing multicasting stuff so we really need a backend network to support our services, as well as many locations for better delivery quality.
I'm investigating "suspects" that could be used in a server access environment. My requirements are:
*24 or 48 10/100/1000 Mbps Ports
*Atleast 2 x 1000Mbps uplinks (fiber preferred)
*SNMP-enabled for remote bandwidth polling @ ports and uplinks
*Simple Layer 3 allowing for per port rate limiting
VLAN creation support would be a plus, but not required
The switch needs to be able to handle ~1000Mbps of constant usage
I would be open to using non-Cisco switches as well.

This month I just pruchase dedicated server, spec are AMD X2 with 1GB RAM.
On ssh, the memory result is:
root@server1 [~]# free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 883 836 47 0 163 397
-/+ buffers/cache: 275 608
Swap: 2047 0 2047
My question:
1. Why the total ram just 883MB? I think it should 1024Mb?
2. The server still empty, but why I see the total used memory is 836Mb?
I only have experience with cpanel vps and when my server empty it only use around 200MB RAM and around 400MB ram usage when my vps load with 30+ account.

WARNING: One or more of your mailservers is claiming to be a host other than what it really is (the SMTP greeting should be a 3-digit code, followed by a space or a dash, then the host name). If your mailserver sends out E-mail using this domain in its EHLO or HELO, your E-mail might get blocked by anti-spam software. This is also a technical violation of RFC821 4.3 (and RFC2821 4.3.1). Note that the hostname given in the SMTP greeting should have an A record pointing back to the same server. Note that this one test may use a cached DNS record.

why httpd-statsu displays local addresses along with remote ones?
I have a Debian server with RAID 1 via hardware.
Could someone tell me how can i check the RAID status? ( if a hd failed or something like this ).
I have a PROMISE TECH hardware raid card running a 4 disk RAID 10 array. I logged into today to check the drive statuses which were:
Drive 1: OK
Drive 2: OK
Drive 3: OK
Drive 4: OK, PFA
So they all look to be okay, but that 4th disk has PFA (I'm guessing that stands for predicted failure analysis) but I am not sure if that means its predicting a fail, or just stating that the technology is running?
Also, this array is the system drive on a server which has much too little memory, (there is usually 5-7GB PF swap during the day) and I'm concerned that the drives constantly under that stress are more prone to fail. They are 2.5" SAS 10k Fujitsu if that means anything.

I just installed DirectAdmin with Apache 2.2 on CentOS 5.2 and whenever I manually restart httpd, it doesn't show if it started the service or not.
Code:
[root@server ~]# service httpd restart
Stopping httpd: [ OK ]
Starting httpd:
[root@server ~]# service httpd status
httpd (pid 17586 17585 17584 17583 17579 17555) is running...
It's running but it doesn't show the OK..
