I had them for about 6 months and it was great until some time in the middle of May I got an email from them saying "my website is overloading/overlimits and even small dedicated sever wont handle the load" I had "Failover Reseller Plans" which allows 10,000MB space & 200GB bandwidth. The only script my website had at the time was a phpBB forum. My forum got about 2-3 posts per day with an average of 300 users per day. How could it cause overloading/overlimits ? Their "abuse team" wasn't very helpful at all! I got fed up with it and moved my site to a new webhost => servint

However, their support team was amazing. They replied to my tickets very fast. They were always online even at 3 or 4 am !! And most of the time they were very helpful and wouldhelp you with anything.

Would I go back to them again? i'm not sure ...maybe or maybe not

So I moved everything to Servint VPS after this whole incident. I really have no word to say about Servint except that they're AWESOME! I really like them & their support team. I had them for about 4 months and no complaints about them. However due to my financial prob (spend all my $ on gas & rising cost of everything) I had to downgrade to a reseller account instead

Now I'm moving to Hostgator.

I'll give you all my reviews in a few months...

What are your thoughts of Ultrahosting.com, I didn't find may reviews here on WHT.

I talked with the sales rep. and he said they host people such as: Mazda, Chrysler and Xerox.

My Sites Are Down For 2 Days With ResellerZoom (modVPS)

I have a VPS with ResellerZoom (modVPS) and on 18th after opening a ticket I was told they need to recompile apache and from there on all of my domains are showing a apache page or internal server error.

For the last 2 days when ever I open a ticket they say, they are recompiling apache.

Today I was told that they need to recompile apache AGAIN by another tech. its going to be 3 days now and still they are recompiling apache and my sites are down.

Does it really take 2-3 days to fix a issue like this? or could they be lacking in support? Any advice, so I can tell their techs to speed up the process?

About 500-1000 sites of mine where down for about 1-2 days few months back now this and they are killing business

ResellerZoom Can't Hand My Wordpress Blog Because Of MySQL

I've been hosting my membership website on one of my accounts on my reseller account at ResellerZoom and it's an absolute joke. The membership website is running on Wordpress 2.7.

The error message 'Internal Server Error' is CONSTANTLY coming up even though my membership website only has ONE member adding, editing and changing the site. This has been going on for 2 months now and there is NO WAY I can open my site to anyone else whilst this is going on.

I have the following plugins running and have tried it without ANY of these running and still had problems.

- Audio player (adds player for mp3 files)

- Contact form 7 by Takayuki Miyoshi

- Gravatar

- Limit posts plugin by [url]Blog Archives Limit Posts Plugin?

- Wishlist Member by [url]

- Wordpress Backup Plugin Il Filosofo WordPress Database Backup

The only response I've got from ResellerZoom is:

Resellers may not use more than 2% CPU daily, 3% memory daily, run more than 10 simultaneous processes per user, allow any process to run for longer than 30 CPU seconds, run any process that consumes more than 20% of available CPU at any time, or run any process that consumes more than 16 MB of memory. Databases are limited to 16 max user connections with a max query time of 8 seconds. Cron jobs must not execute more than once every 15 minutes and will be niced to 15 or greater.

So it looks like I need to move..

I just need a shared webhosting account perhaps? That will support MySQL connections with Wordpress!

Thoughts On Amazon AWS

Are the amazon's EC2/S3 solutions a viable alternative to dedicated hosting? The thought of capacity/bandwidth/computing power on demand sounds great in theory. Could it host a basic LAMP setup?

Hope this is the right place for this question. I'm interested in hosting with 1and1.co.uk as they are good value and allow multiple domains to be hosted (incidentally, will nosy people be able to figure that the different domains are hosted on the same package?).

Just wanted to hear your thoughts and experiences? It seems cheaper to host on their American site compared to the British site. Am I allowed to do that?

Wiredtree First Thoughts Review

I was having problems with shared hosting so I'm having a crack with a VPS from wiredtree. I have been with them 3days so thought I'd post up an early review on my first thoughts then update 3months on, 6months and 12months.

I'm new to the VPS world and have never had any experience with server management/functions other than with-in cpanel so you could say I'm a total noob, so this is coming from a newbie perspective. Ok so here goes for the pros/cons so far.

Pros:

- The set-up was fast once sorted (see the first con).

- The payment system and ordering process was easy to follow.

- The support is very fast helpful and understanding (this is for their online support not phoned them yet).

- The start-up e-mail is useful and gives clear direct instructions.

- The prices are fair and in-line with the market.

- Their 'Grove' control panel is clean and clear and gives you access to vital functions and information, such as DNS, server stats, billing and support.
Cons:

- When I set-up my account they didn't ring to confirm I had to chase them to get it sorted but once it was confirmed my server was up in under 1 hour.

- On their bottom package they give 348mb ram which before you put anything else on the server over 60% of this is used by other functions/softwares. Of course these things can be turned on/off when needed but I feel this should be mentioned at sign-up so people can understand and plan what they are going to need.

- Their knowledgebase has so far failed me as the issues I have had (mostly due to being a noob) are not listed on it and there are no other way other than submitting a ticket to find out about the small easy to solve problems, but their support is fast so no biggy.

Overall its not been a bad start It has had some floors but I'm happy and things are running smoothly.

Like I said these are only first thoughts on the service and I will update at later dates to give a clear picture on their service.

My Thoughts About Hacking... [Part 1]

Is security really that critical? If so, why are some of the largest software companies providing such a bad example for the rest of the industry? Why would someone want to target my website? Why is security often overlooked?

These are all common questions that arise on a daily basis within the online industry.

The rest of this article will provide some detailed answers, along with practical examples and true scenarios.

I've spoken with numerous hackers over the past short while. I can't count the number of times I've heard the line "Ignorant site owners deserve to be hacked". In my opinion, that's like claiming that cars without alarms deserve to be stolen, or homes without alarm systems deserve to be burglarized. It's not just wrong - it's illegal.

Security risks and vulnerabilities affect the entire online industry. When a single website is hacked, there are usually multiple other victims. This is most commonly seen with widely distributed software. A potential attacker has the ability to install the software on a test environment, locate the vulnerabilities, then attack random victims even before anyone else is aware of the potential exploits. Once a vulnerability is located, the attacker simply needs to search for other environments using the same software, and within minutes there are hundreds, often thousands of potential victims.

Typically, in the race to market, software providers are encouraged to release their products as soon as the applications are usable. Critical development procedures are often overlooked or intentionally bypassed. One such miss is an application vulnerability assessment. Although the product may be usable, the effects of a vulnerable application could be severe.

Sadly, nobody is "off limits" when it comes to hacking. Most hackers feel safe committing online crime, since the online industry has evolved much faster than the security industry. Many applications are not created with the intent to recognize hacking attempts. Some hackers view their actions as a competition - Who can attack the most valuable website? Who can exploit the most user databases? In many cases, these attacks are bragged about within the hacker's immediate network. The competitive nature of these hacking groups has become so severe, there have been reports of attacks between competing organizations.

You might ask, "If I use industry standards, won't my environment be secure?". The short answer: no, but it helps. Hackers are not restricted by industry standards. Most security companies only implement new standards once at least one victim is reported. This often gives hackers plenty of time to locate other vulnerable environments, and before long, the number of victims can increase rapidly. Hackers are some of the most innovative individuals within the online industry. The most logical way to combat them is to use similar methodology for security purposes.

Moving From Rackspace? Thoughts On New Providers...?

We run our site from a dedicated server at Rackspace and have done for 6 years now. Whilst i'm very happy with the level of service provided we're starting to consider small cost savings by moving to other providers.

We did select LiquidWeb and have attempts a couple of moves to the new server but so far without success (most recent being yesterday with 12 hours of frustration!). A lot of the problems seem to be down to cPanel/WHM being a lot more "locked down" than were were used to with Webmin (that runs on Rackspace servers) and being somewhat unfamiliar with cPanel/WHM.

We have asked advice from LiquidWeb support and whilst they seem to be reasonable in responding, i've yet to feel the "heroic" aspect although this might just be due to being spoilt at Rackspace for many years. Support responses tend to be quite "rushed" and do the minimum asked for rather than going that extra "mile" which was seemingly indicated during the sales cycle.

My question is this - do people have thoughts on potential other fully managed providers? Should we even be looking for a new provider?


Specs looking for:

- Fully Managed
- Dual Xeon Quad Core
- 2GB RAM
- 2 x 73GB SCSI RAID
- Some form of Remote Backup
- Linux

We're currently paying about $850 for the server at Rackspace which has the following specs:

- Single AMD Opteron 246 2.0 GHz
- 2GB RAM
- 2 x 73GB SCSI RAID
- Managed Backup
- RHEL4
- Webmin

SolarVPS Issues Public Thoughts

I regret to bring this to a public forum but having seen that solarvps has a presence here I am hoping that a resolve to this issue can be found, and any public opinions are welcomed.

Having been a customer with solarvps since 2006 without any cause for concerns it does not make me happy with some recent issues I have had with them. So I have had a vps server hosted with them since 2006. Sometime in February when attempting to login to my VPS I got an error, I left it as this happens sometimes, it happened for 4 days in a row so I thought this is a little strange logged in to my control panel, to see no VPS server was listed under the account. There was no invoice generated either. Ok this is strange but I just assumed it had been terminated, no invoice came through and that particular server was a backup server so I sought hosting elsewhere.

4 months pass I get an email from solarvps stating my account is overdue with charges applied. I contact them back straight away asking what they are billing me for I have explained the situation time and again to them, I have asked the questions why the server disappeared from my account, why I wasn’t able to access the vps remotely and why no invoices got generated at the time to which I have had no response, I have asked more than 5 times now. The only response I keep getting form them is threats if I do not pay to hand over to a collection agency and the possibility of legal action. To which I have replied each time that I will contest any such action and seek legal advice myself.

Granted I should probably have contacted them at the time but really they are at fault more than I am for not asking them what has happened, I truly believe I am not in the wrong here but nobody within solarvps is prepared is looking at the facts of what has happened here.

Well anyway I hope bringing this to a public forum will bring a resolve and maybe some answers. I am getting no response from anybody within solarvps and would be happy to take this away from the public if they are willing.

I am not unfair nor does it make sense that a customer for so long would just decide not to pay you one month and kick up a fuss over such a small amount of money but the fact that I am not in the wrong with this matter, I am not prepared to pay them no matter how much bullying tactics they wish to adopt in trying to make me.

Apache: Need Thoughts On Offloading Static Content

I'm looking for a way to get a little more mileage out of Apache + PHP environment without losing Apache capabilities. In shared hosting environments, losing features such as .htaccess and a real mod_rewrite are not even on the table. I'm also not willing to accept the performance hit and connection issues that are inherent with FastCGI, so that means mod_php.

In this particular situation, there are two busy sites, which are the problem.

These are a few ideas I've been thinking about.

1. mod_proxy + nginx: mod_proxy sends static content requests to nginx. This requires two sets of vhost files to be maintained.

2. mod_cache: Caching common static content such as page graphics .css, .js, etc.

3. squid

If you've been down 2 or more of these roads, I could benefit from your experience.

I have been with them around 3 years in the past and was very happy. But after i was enthusiast with Europe (ping time etc) and i made the mistake and moved in Europe. Since then i had many problems so i get back to them few days ago.

When i moved all my domains to them i had many issues with my scripts , mails etc because i manualy tranfered everything with unix commands.

Servint guys helped with everything to get working. I didnt lost any data and i am very happy with them.

They have awesome support team and very strong knowledge of their job.

They even helped me in a joomla script issue which they are not responsible
Again, they are great and you cant go wrong with them.

Servint Woes

I've been using Servint VPS hosting for the past few years and have been very happy with them. But unfortunately I have been experiencing problems for the last couple of months. My forums are regularly going down for a few minutes at a time and I have been submitting tickets to Servint.

Servint replied suggesting that my sites aren't going down. Yet I tried the sites on different PC's at different locations and they have been down. I started a thread on one forum and got confirmation from quite a few members that they experienced downtime. Servint have now accepted that there has been downtime.

I asked Servint for suggested solutions and they didn't provide any
I specifically asked if I needed to upgrade the VPS package, they originally said an upgrade wasn't necessary but 4 days later said that I did need an upgrade.

I've upgraded twice in the last few weeks and as of today I am on a Super VPS @ $199 / mth - Servint have confirmed that they have upgraded me to this package
But my sites have been down for about the last hour or two
In my ticket today, Servint have said "the longest your sites were down was 5 minutes".

This is simply not true, and even if it was true, regular 5 minute downtime is not acceptable in my view.

I feel that no one at Servint is taking my issues seriously. They had repeatedly told me that there was no problem but now they admit that there is one and they don't seem willing or able to fix it - this has been going on for a couple of months.

I ask "what am I doing wrong", because I see such great reviews of Servint here on WHT and I don't understand why I'm not getting the same level of service.

I have very limited technical knowledge - should I be using another type of hosting that provides more in-depth tech support?

Is it possible that the problems I am experiencing are outside of Servint's control and that I am expecting too much from them?

I want to stay hosted with Servint, but I'm having great difficulties at present. Given the great reviews I see of Servint, I'm actually concerned that they will tell me that my business is not worth the trouble and that I should host my sites elsewhere. What should I do?

I just move a site from resellerzoom to a servint vps..

I have been facing some strange problems..

the first problem was smarty..

Fatal error: Smarty error: unable to write to $cache_dir Be sure $cache_dir is writable by the web server user. Smarty.class.php on line 1095

i had to make he cache dir 777 inorder to fix the error..

it used to work with 755 before..

next up was the owner problem ..

the owner of the domain under whm was still pointing to the old resellerzoom accountname .. i changed it to root..

now i ran a chown command on root of the site .. still wordpress gives me error for image upload..

I just wanted to take the time and give a quick review of ServInt. I have switched to their service about 5 months ago now and I just have to say: it's absolutely fantastic!

I'm only on the lowest VPS package, $50/month, but the service has really just been spectacular. First off the value is incredible as service quality is top notch and server specs are as well. In addition, these accounts are fully managed which has really saved me from a lot of headaches. Even further, ServInt will help you out with stuff that you normally wouldn't even consider covered under support (and it's not, they help based on their own great quality of service not something written in policy). They are very prompt and helpful, unlike a lot of other providers who always try to blame all of the problems on me (you) instead of truly investigating them.

Right now I am running about 30 small sites on the VPS and performance is unequivocal. In total my VPS uses roughly 350GB of bandwidth per month (out of the allocated 500GB).

I will say right now I don't work for ServInt or anything like that, really I just wanted to help get the word out. I have been with a lot of VPS providers before including MediaTemple, GoDaddy, and SolarVPS and none have impressed me as much as ServInt (though GoDaddy was really good until I ran into some problems that their support wouldn't cover, then they turned mean and very unhelpful).

VPS : Steadfast / Liquidweb / ServInt ? - Best One ?

I am new to these server related things.

I don't want to go for shared hosting, as there will be too many restrictions. And I will not need a dedicated server until my traffic really grows multi-fold (may take few months).

I am aiming to run 3 of my new sites on a VPS server. (I want to know whether I can put all my 3 sites on the same VPS server.)

After my initial research, I came up with below list :-

STEADFAST : steadfast.net/services/vps.php

LIQUIDWEB : liquidweb.com/cart/content/vps/

SERVINT : servint.net/vps/details.php

Now I like to know which one is better. (You can suggest any other providers also if they can beat these in terms of Customer Service and Reliability and my below requirements.)

Outline of my requirements :-

1) Fully Managed Service and outstanding customer service.
2) Daily Backup of all content and database.
3) Fast response times (For my website users mostly in INDIA) and best network.
4) Easy and smooth transition to upgrade to next VPS package or a dedicated server (I don't want to keep changing DNS everytime I want to upgrade.)
5) No restriction on bulk email being sent (Fully Double Opt-In mailing list)
6) cPanel needed
7) Other routine things like Uptime, Reliability, Hardware Replacement Warranty...
8) Price is not really a big issue.

5 Years Review - Servint

Not really full five years. I signed up for essential VPS plan in March 2004 (so for few months it will be full five years).

My VPS is fully managed and support is great. It is real 24/7 and response time is always about 5-15 minutes, and almost always with problem solved (there is no annoying replies like; need more information's, please let us what you want or something like that) They always fix the problems and they always know how to fix things.

It was some big failure with hardware (I can not remember date) but they deal carefully with that, move all of us to different machines, clients was well informed, and generally there was not any long downtime (as far as I can remember)
Network are great. They have direct link with Deutsche telecom which means very good connection for Europe.

Few times I request backup for accidentally deleted files, and they recovery them fast.

Only critic for billing. One month (I can remember when) they charge me for extra bandwidth. It was caused by some attackers on server I do not know, as none of my domains cause that (It was some bandwidth leak other than http, ftp or mail, that I am not familiar with). Normally I can not spend even 10-15 % of total bandwidth , but that particular month it was 300%, so they charge me for all. I do not know if it is my fault or not, but maybe they should protect server better or whatever.

Other than that I have never had any problems.

I recommend them to anyone as they are really ''peace in mind'' company.

For the time being I will keep to use Servint services. I hope I will not forget to come back here again after five years with 10-years review.

My 9 months ServInt review

I'm with Servint since february and it's time for a quick review.

The VPS was setup within a few hours after I ordered.After seeing how many people around here complained about how they still waiting after several days for their vps, I conclude that my vps was setup was VERY FAST.

While I'm no certified admin, I'm a quick learner and i'm used to solve problems on my own. Thus I didn't open to many tickets with support, but the few I opened were answered quite fast.

So you get fast response from support.

The thing that impressed me most, though, was the performance of the vps. It runs fast and without problems.

I recall only one time the connection seemed very slow but I think it was a problem with their network because their forums were very slow too. However in a few hours all was back to normal.

Basically, you forget you have the vps. It just works without problems and with great performance.

I have the Esential package (384 Ram) and at 49$ I consider it a very good deal. For some people this is expensive but I recommend them to read carefully the horror stories of those who wanted cheap.

Quality service and peace of mind is worth more than the 10-20$ you pay less with a cheap host.

ServInt Vs. Wiredtree Shootout

Bottom line, neither one of these companies can work with a reasonably intelligent (although admittedly totally ignorant of *nix and "manaaged" VPS's) yet _desperate_ web developer migrate from a shared hosting package with , get this, 1&1 to a "managed" VPS and get email functioning on port 587.

I have given both companies _total_ access to my 1&1 account and yet:

ServInt can't get me up and running with a cPanel GUI. To their credit, they were able to with Plesk.

Wiredtree hasn't been able to even let me successfully ping a pop or smtp server since the account was activated last night and I've been working with them since 9:30 last night. I called and talked to XXXXXXXX (I obviously won't use his name) last night and had him check out how I set up my system. He made an adjustment on the firewall for, yes, port 587 and assured me I'd be good to go once the domain changes propagated. Obviously that hasn't been the case or you wouldn't be reading this.

So bottom line, since both companies have _total_ access to my accounts, and I trust them both otherwise I wouldn't be doing business with them, whichever company delivers me a functioning "managed" VPS with a working email account, _regardless_ of GUI as I've told ServInt to revert my "managed" VPS back to Plesk, I'll sign up with them and probably _never_ leave because I'd rather go through a ******* root canal than have to go through this process again.

I've haven't got time to exchange Problem Ticket posts to get a fucntioning VPS, hell I've got a business to run and thought the word "managed" actually meant managed.
