Does anyone know where my company can buy Virtuozzo Container Licenses. If so who is the best company offering it at the best price. We are interested in getting a new dedicated server with SoftLayer but they only offer Citrix XenServer 5. We really have not heard to much about people wanting to be on a XenServer VPS. If we are wrong about this whole XenServer thing please tell us because it seems like no one is using it really. XenServer looks like it has some really nice features but its just not worth investing in if its not popular enough. It appears most other hosting companies are selling Virtuozzo VPS. The Planet has a great deal on Virtuozzo License with cPanel (10 Virtuozzo License w/ cPanel = $110). Does anyone know where we can get a similar price and still get our server with SoftLayer.

I called up Parallels to ask the question of, can I run Virtuozzo & Parallels Server on the same node, at the same time. They didn't seem to know the answer, which was a bit odd. Has anyone installed both and have them work without problems?
View 5 Replies View RelatedThis is an interesting study conducted by University of Michigan and HP comparing XEN (paravirtualization) and OpenVZ (virtual containers).
XEN, MS Virtual Server and VMWare all use paravirtualization, while OpenVZ and Virtuozzo use Virtual Containers.
The study reports that response times can increase by 400 to 600% for XEN, even with the host running only a few nodes. This is largely because of the overhead XEN presents.
OpenVZ had a minimal response time increase of around 100% for the same workload. The study also noted that XEN used twice the amount of CPU for the same workload compared to OpenVZ
What the article says is that L2 cache misses (both memory and instruction) signficantly increased in the XEN study. For non Computer Science people, that basically means the processor caching system was far less effective for XEN, compared to OpenVZ (and single OS systems). Caching is important because the time it takes to read instructions or data from RAM is significantly slower than reading instructions from the cache. Cache misses are similar to page-faults (in OS memory architecture).
To a consumer what this means is that Virtual Containers (OpenVZ, Virtuozzo) may offer much better performance than any paravirtualization based solution as long as the host isn't overloading their VPS system.
While paravirtualization offers higher fault-tolerance, in most well designed virtual container based VPS systems, this is minimized and the performance overhead may not be worth it.
I guess the economy must be hitting them hard. They have resorted to unsolicited commercial email, everyone's favourite.

I hope this finds you well. I am currently attempting to reach out to companies that offer web hosting services and either use, or have used, Parallels Plesk Panel as a part of the service offerings. The goal is to re-introduce Parallels Plesk Panel and hopefully revive any previously established relationships. This includes looking into why the Parallels Plesk Panel business slowed, or stopped completely, within your organization.
We are working very hard to establish a reputable channel within the hosting marketplace. In order to do so we need to look at what is currently working and what is not currently working. The best place to begin this research is with companies that have used us, but now don't really offer our products. With that said, are you available for a phone call to discuss?
My goal is to understand:
* Do you currently offer control panels, if so, is Parallels Plesk Panel a part of your offerings?
* If you are no longer offering (pushing) Parallels Plesk Panel, is there a reason?
* Would you be receptive to some sort of "trial" program to re-introduce you to Parallels Plesk Panel and our Service Provider Partnership Program?
I look forward to your response and hopefully speaking with you soon.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI currently have a VPS and it's running out of breath. I saw a dedicated server package at The Planet for $69 a month (+$25 for cPanel):
- Celeron 2.0
- 512 MB RAM

- 750 GB Bandwidth
- cPanel

I know these specs are enough for me right now but before I order, do you know some other web host that offers a similar package in this price range?
I'm thinking about selling an old machine I have, and I'm just wondering a ballpark figure on what it's worth if I decide to ebay it. I think I need to upgrade to a Dual Quad Xeon box for the project I'm about to undertake.

After following the above guide, PIM became not available but clients were able to start their firewalls without any issues.
I made some changes and PIM and clients firewalls were fine but certain features in PIM are not functioning, as seen below;

Cannot create Containers on the "linux.x86_64" platform as no suitable Hardware Nodes are available.
Possible reasons
All compatible Hardware Nodes are offline.
No OS templates found.
Possible solutions
Try again and select another platform or Hardware Node.
Install at least one OS template for this platform.

There is 100's of templates and I was able to create containers before I made the iptable changes.
I have been in contact with Parallels but it seems they don't know how to solve it either as they haven't replied for almost 4 hours. (they were replying instantly until gave them the above)
I've read a couple of reviews on similar forums and blogs trying to figure out which hosts are worth their buck. The main points of discussion were:
- Price
- Reliability (up/downtime)
- Support
Most of the providers were either too expensive, or lack proper support.
The most discussed company was Hostgator. I don't understand the hype but maybe you guys can help me out here.
What is the average price for a constant 100mb ethernet line into colocation cages in datacenters?
I'm getting a 20x30 cage in a local datacenter and they are offering it at $75/day or $2250/month.
Keep in mind that it is dedicated to me, as well as fully redundant from Verio/NTT and Level3.
I had a client that can no longer afford a dedicated server hes paying for.
Hes been with me for 4 years so I offered to pay for a vps for him for a few months. He had the dedicated server split into 1 linux side and 1 windows side so im going to get 1 linux vps from fsckvps *2gb ram* now im looking for a windows vps that has similar prices as fsckvps because he was only paying 70 per month for the dedi server.

We are looking for a private suite, and we have got many offers, can someone tell me what are normal prices per square meter in regular data centers? Just a basic room, no hardware etc.
We received really strange offers and they flip from 400 dollar to over thousand dollar per square meter.
I am getting my quote back Tuesday but need a little bargaining power with these guys...
Oakland, Ca datacenter
40mbps, 20A, 42U rack.
What should I be looking at price range here, how much per mbps?
Only info I've seen is from 2003 where people were saying $200/mbps. Obviously prices have come WAY down. I've seen people on here reselling internap bandwidth for $12/mbps, but they might have bought a huge commit.
I will have to get such a Hosting system CDN for my site, but what I have seen until now is very expensive so are there any good CDN to a good price.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am sure people have been in contact with Cogent regarding connectivity...
They gave me a price for a 100 Megabit and a 1 Gigabit connection. So I wanted to see what people were quoted by Cogent.
He claims they have re-structured their entire business over the past 12 months.
He quoted $10/Megabit... How does this compare to anyone else?
Also is even getting a connection thru Cogent worth it?
I was about to move from serverbeach to the planet when i noticed now they charge $15.oo more monthly for win 2003 when a couple of days ago it was free no promo or anything
and 89 dollars plus 25 for control panel and then 15 for windows
and it's a celeron with not even a tb of bandwidth
I have heard that majority of the people use hostgator as their host and i looked at their pricing and its looks very good and reasonable aswell.
I want to know how hostgator is, and how has your experience been with them?
I hope to get some good replies so i can purchase hostgator hosting.
Anyone got the email?
The increase is about 23-30 dollars per server...
Time to move....
is liquidweb worth the price
i need low space and low bandwidth 1gb space and 30-50gb bandwidth

for you what country of Europe has the best prices in connectivity?
So far the best thing I have found is in Amsterdam with 10 € / Mbps (100Mbps) or 7€ / Mbps (1Gbps).
I think it's better to pay per GB, I mean hqhost.net offers Price-Per-Gigabyte Plan and
I consider it has some advantages against the ordinary shared plan.
Do you agree with me?
We've been considering getting a cabinet at Level3 in Tampa and the last pricing we got was November 2006. Yesterday I spoke with the rep I'd been dealing with to place the order, and was told that Level3 raised their prices substantially as of January 1st.
The quote we got 2 months ago is now a full 30% higher.
Can anyone confirm whether Level3 really did take a fat increase, or am I being hustled?
I am looking for a Procurve 2848 switch. It's listed on ebay with different prices (from 650 to 3000usd). I wonder what price I should consider as a fair price? Dont want to pay much, but dont want to buy broken unit at cheap price either. An used one is fine whenever it's still working at all ports

I'm wondering if I am paying too much, so I was hoping others who have a dedicated server at rackspace could say how much they are paying.
I have a dedicated server, intel xeon, 4 gb of ram, and 2,000MB bandwidth and pay $1,400 per month. I feel that is over-priced, how much are you paying?
There is a new page on Rackspace's website where they are offering to match the price of any hosting company that sells the same package of specifications. It sounds like there will be no compromise on the standards of service included in the deal.
