Moving From VPS - Choosing Dedicated System Setup

Jun 26, 2008

I would really appreciate some advice about changing from a VPS to a dedicated server and getting a good 24/7 server management service

I know I need more Ram than I’ve got now and I know I need a managed server. Beyond that I’m not sure what I need and all the info I’m reading is making me more uncertain and more worried about making the wrong decision.

I moved from shared hosting to VPS a year ago. I have now started to outgrow the VPS.

The VPS has 512 MB Ram, 10% Burstable Resources. The site has been up since the last crash for 78 days but it is maxing out the Ram during the busy parts of the day and has high load averages.

There is one site on the VPS with static HTML pages. Last month’s figures were approximately 186,000 MB of Data transfer and 4,362000 page views. Average of 30,000 visitors per day

I want to add another 4 or 5 sites small sites. Some of those will be XML feed sites. No forums, chat or reselling.

So what to choose?

1.Operating System
CentOS or Fedora Core Linux 6
2.Control Panel
cPanel 11 or Parallels Pro
3.Processor
Single Core or Dual Core
4.Ram
1GB or 2GB
5.Hard Drive
Single with backup, RAID or RAID with backup drive

Server Management Services and Monitoring 24/7
I’m using WebSite Pulse for monitoring at the moment and I’m very happy with them but they don’t do server management. I need a company to secure, protect, update and keep the server running 24/7

platinumservermanagement.com seem to offer a good service for only $29 per month. Don’t know what they are like. They only manage cPanel, don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. Would appreciate other suggestions.

Basically I’ve got to decide do I stick with current hosting service and move to a dedicated server choosing from the options I have listed or move to another hosting service offering managed VPS with more resources like wiredtree.com. Don’t know what Wired Tree is like just read about them in the forum.

Credentials For Choosing A Dedicated Provider

Oct 30, 2009

How much more would you pay a month for dedicated server with a Cisco Master Certified Managed Services Provider?

In addition, would having the entire company's support staff CCNA certified influence your decision for choosing a dedicated provider?

Would certifications influence your decision to buy a server?

Dedicated Or Reseller Setup With Virtualization Or Decent Chroot Setup

Jul 31, 2008

As my clients' needs expand, they're asking for chroot ssh/sftp setup. I'm currently on a dedicated Linux setup but don't really have the time to set up a whole new box with full virtualization or investigate a full chroot solution (baby on the way), and to be honest it would be less hassle to move to a new provider than worry about down time with sites.

What I'm looking for:

- linux hosting
- hosting for 30+ accounts, some with several domains
- at least 6 IP addresses for SSL certs
- each account in a full chroot environment (ssh/sftp/ftp) so they can't poke around each others' files, or each account set up in a virtual machine setup (ie: openvz)
- maildir
- spamassassin
- php 5, mysql, perl 5.8.8
- suexec apache would be nice

Moving From VPS To Dedicated

Aug 27, 2008

I'm moving from VPS to dedicated server, and I need to make the VPS ROOT as "Reseller" on the dedicated!

So, Is there any way to move all accounts from VPS to Dedicated once, then assign them to the reseller account instead of backup each account on VPS and restore it on the dedicated!

Moving From VPS To Dedicated, Email

Apr 8, 2008

I currently have a VPS account with a company that provided an email service, so I just would refer my hosting clients to them for email. I hosted the websites and just referred the email to them. I'm moving to a dedicated server with VolumeDrive, and I'd like to be able to provide email on my own to my clients.

I'd like to see how others do this. Do you host everything on one server, website + email, or do you host them on separate servers?

How Many Hits Should I Have Before Moving To A Dedicated Server

May 2, 2009

I have a drupal based site. The front page is about 200kb and I have 10 trimmed topics in front page. Currently the site is hosted on a shared server. My question is how many hits or page loads per hour/minute should I have before it would be necessary to switch to a dedicated server?

My host is hostgator.

Moving From Shared Hosting - [VPS Or Dedicated]

Jan 8, 2009

Presently, my site is hosted at ICDsoft business shared account
And my site is hosted on "two Quad-core Xeon processors, 8 GB RAM and a multi-terabyte RAID 6 disk array."

I am planning on moving away from a shared account.

My site is an ecommerce site and my budget for a new server is around $100-$150 per month.

Should i transfer to a VPS or Dedicated server ?

I need a Full/complete managed server, either it be VPS or Dedicated. I dont want to get involved in setting up, securing etc. the server. I would like a Control Panel, be it Cpanel or any other with Linux System.

Also, my main concern is, how much bandwidth should be good for an ecommerce site with around 20,000 unique visitors per month, around 500,000 hits per month

I am looking into the following companies which provides VPS and Dedicated solutions:

1). Liquidweb

2). DedicatedNOW

3). Wiredtree

Are there any other companies i should look into?

Which company would be the best in terms of service and support response time? Im spoiled by ICDSoft's quick response time

Also, How much RAM would be good, since most VPS solutions have 512 to 786 MB ram?

How many Cores- Dual, Quad?

Considering Moving From Dedicated To Colo... Scared

Jul 18, 2007

I'm thinking of moving from a dedicated server to colocation. The two reasons for this are -

A. I'd like to actually own my server (considering a Dell rack.)
B. There seems to be a very big price difference between renting a high spec dedicated server and just having your own high spec server in a data centre.

My worries are as follows -

1. Should I install the new server in the data centre before putting Linux etc. on it? Or should I put everything I want on it before it goes to the data centre? Or do racks normally come with Linux pre-installed? I have no idea. What's the normal procedure for new servers?

2. Would it be easy/painless to transfer my websites from my current server to the new colo server? I rely on WHM/Cpanel for a lot of my admin work. I'm not useless, but I'm not good enough to manualy configure DNS etc. myself. Could one of the outsourced administration companies take care of all this for me?

Dedicated Server Setup

Jun 8, 2009

So when you setup a new server, what should I do. I will only be running 1 site for now (vbulletin forum site), should I just install Apache, MySQL, Php, setup the DNS, etc.

Or Should I just Install Plesk, and let that do it.

Most Likely will just be running a 2.53Ghz Core2Duo, 4GB 250GB. I have setup a webserver before just basically though but think I could manage. I think that Plesk would make it easier but would also eat up resources, on the other hand though not having it would use less resources but require more configuration.

How Would I Setup A Dedicated Server

May 10, 2009

I want to setup a dedicated within my home based business, what is the easiest and cheapest way to do this, I understand I would need a static Ip address from my Internet provider (is that right?) also Do i need a spare PC to do this or can I run my main PC and still be able to run it when it's switched off?

The reason I want to learn how to do this is:

1. Save on fee's every month

2. Provide more services at low cost to clients

3. Learn more about the hosting business.

Our current websites have been setup on the server under the same user account (master).

There doesn't seem to be the usual "CPANEL" options which you usually get with shared hosting however.

Most Secure Dedicated Web Server Setup

Mar 18, 2008

I am seeking a little input from others who use multi-CPU machines with large memory as web servers and mysql servers.

I will be more than happy to give additional information I might have overlooked if you need it. Just ask.

We are starting to run more and more dedicated hosts running joomla applications. I've been trying to find the very best settings for both performance and security that I can for the servers to function well specifically with their joomla applications.

Serves are not used for *anything* else at all.

The servers are strictly used to serve up web pages. No need for anything other than what apache/php, joomla requires and a few other things such as ffmpeg, etc.

I would like to remove all tools which aren't needed for such a server, leaving a bare minimum server which is less susceptible to hacking.

I've never messed with the root account so wonder if I can simply not allow any access as root other than terminal, perhaps not even su by giving another account full root access and of course, while allowing the system to continue to function properly with the many things which must run as root.

I would like to do this on all of my public machines which are of course behind firewalls. I also have load balancers and cache devices in front of the web servers but at this time, they are not activated so aren't in the realm of this question.

Development is done in a separate environment and the data is pushed to the web server via private network to the web servers. This means no need for shared tools, FTP, or anything else which users would need in a shared environment.

The servers are 8-way IBM, running linux and apache, php/APC.
Servers have 32GB of memory and I can install up to 64GB.

Databases are run on separate machines which are also dedicated only to running mysql databases. Same machines as above.

Machines all run multiple network cards bonded as a single IP.

So, my questions are;

How can I best utilize my hardware to take advantage of their memory capacities.

For example, on the web servers, I'd like to find the best settings for httpd.conf which takes advantage of the machines resources.

On MySQL servers, I'd like to do the same as the above, taking the best advantage of the hardware/memory.

For web serving and for joomla, I seek the very best security settings I can possibly get. I say best because since they aren't used by users, there is no need to have a lot of tools and access to these machines so it should not be a problem to tighten these machines up a great deal.

Any input from those who have such experiences would be very welcome as I've been finding no one place for help on this.

How To Setup/maintain A Shared Or Dedicated Server

Jan 18, 2009

I've trawled the sitepoint forums but haven't found anything relating to this subject. I'm hoping someone out there has found themselves in a similar situation.

As a brief summary, I work as a full time web designer for a company but also run my own web design business in my spare time. Within the next year I plan to go freelance which will hopefully leave with some spare time to learn dynamic web design as well as offer clients domain registration and hosting services.

As a web designer, my knowledge of hosting is not that great, but I intend to learn. Currently, I work with a guy who sorts all this out for me. He has a shared server and pays a certain amount per month and charges me £XX a year per client to setup domains and hosting.

I was wondering how much technical skill I need to set this up myself. With so many hosting packages out there, it's hard to know where to start. Should I buy a dedicated server and host my clients at home or go with the safer option and pay monthly for shared hosting?

Before Choosing A Hosting

Oct 19, 2008

I've an original post with thread number 727551 which has date got old (forgive me for coming back late). So I decided to post a new thread here. But really thanks for all your helps, and I found I'm lucky to find a good place to ask my questions, as I see lots of valuabe responses when I come back.

I have some further questions about having "multiple domains" with a single hosting plan. Forgive me for not having much concept about this:

1. Does it mean that the "multiple domains" will all be sharing a single IP address (or should I say if I go to Shared Hosting plans, websites from all other people who share the same hosting machine with me will have the same IP)?

2. Would there be negative effect for my search engine rankings of each of these domains, if I have my domains sharing the same hosting (and if they really share the same IP)?

3. In case people know one of my domain name, would there be any way to check for my other domains in the same hosting, so that means they will know all my other websites?

I ask this because I'm thinking to launch different websites on a same niche.
And after looking into different hosting companies and their reviews, I found there are really different (and quite confusing) opinions around. Actually I expect I do not need much at the very beginning. I found there are lots of cheap offers, price as low as $1 per month, but I just afraid there will be problem later on. I'm thinking may be just go to those big and more famous one, say host gator, to avoid any unnecessary headaches later on.

Choosing The Right Web Host

Choosing The Right Host

Jul 16, 2008

Choosing the right host is a very important decision. I've compiled a short list of do's and don't when it comes to web hosting.

1) UNLIMITED features. Rarely trust companies that offer unlimited space/bandwidth etc. as this is blatant overselling. When was the last time you saw an unlimited hard drive?! Companies that offer unlimited hosting features may not be around long and their other services tend to suffer - e.g. support.

2) Free hosting. Be wary of free hosts, particularly ones that seem to be giving far too good a deal to you - they probably are. The Webmaster-talk forums are regularly spammed with free hosting, and one that keeps cropping up is called ********.com. I urge you to ignore this as a highly reputable hosts do not spam forums!

3) Your ACTUAL needs. You might be excited by hosts that offer 5GB of storage space and 1000GB (1TB) of bandwidth for very low prices, but you should at the very least be wary of such companies. Besides the con issue, ask yourself - do you even need such large resources? For most small companies and individuals starting up, a maximum of 500MB web storage space and roughly 5GB bandwidth will be adequate. Once your site is up and running, you will be able to see whether you do need more or not and if necessary, you can upgrade. Some hosts (hostmonster.com being an example) seem to offer incredible packages for very low amounts of money. However, companies like this are often unreliable and may end up throwing you off their server if you start using these extreme amounts of resources. See tip no. 5 for solution.

4) Do your research. It's very important to do adequate resource on whichever host you choose: don't just take their word for everything. Check what the technology experts are saying on the issue (e.g. look through reputable technology magazines for reviews). BE CAREFUL WHEN SEARCHING REVIEW SITES - THEY USUALLY EARN COMMISSION FOR EACH SIGNUP SO WILL PUSH THE HIGHEST BIDDING HOST!! While it sounds infantile, type queries like "..... .com sucks" and also search through their own support forums (assuming they have them) to see how quickly issues are resolved. Try contacting their support or sales departments with questions to get a good perspective of their response times. Remember, if their sales department take a while before they have your custom, imagine how long they may take when they do have your custom!

5) When your needs outweight most plans. If you've outgrown your current plan and you are using very large resource amounts, it may be time to think about renting out a VPS (Virtual Private Server) or a Dedicated Server. I emphasize that this will not be necessary unless you are receiving a lot of visitors (traffic) and unless you are storing a very large amount of data (e.g. hundreds of photos, movies or software downloads). VPS' are now relatively cheap and combine reliability with speed and of course more space and bandwidth. A typical entry VPS may offer you 10GB storage and 100GB bandwidth. If you have extreme needs and you are already running a very busy site, you may even contemplate renting out a Dedicated server from a hosting company. Dedicated servers are computers entirely dedicated to your own web site and are very reliable (if you choose the right host) but are overkill for the vast majority of people.

Choosing A Host Is No Fun

May 1, 2007

I'm moving from shared to VPS. This forum is helpful, but I seem to notice everyone recommends the hosts that advertise here. That makes me wonder about conflict of interest.

Anyway, I'm looking for a company that has great customer service and will walk me through the first baby steps of having my own VPS for the first time. That and uptime. Everyone else seems to have the same features. So how to choose?

I called 3 hosts today: JaguarPC, LiquidWeb and Spry. Jaguar sounded okay. The sales kid at Liquid didn't seem to be able to answer any of my questions that weren't on his cheat sheet. And Spry had me on hold forever (with good music, though) and dropped my call a minute in.

Also, will they help me lock my VPS down like a fort so it's ueber secure? Will I have to install PHP, MySQL, phpMyAdmin, and all the other programs I didn't know I needed myself? I have no experience, so it would be good to know. I'm a graphic desiger turned web designer turned noob PHP developer -- I'm scared that I'm not geeky enough.

Anyway, does anyone have the same feeling that all hosts seem the same when you're shopping around? I know I'm going to have to give in, close my eyes and jump at some point (very soon). But this is no fun.

Server B - this is a dedicated server
Only Databases are setup on this server.

Now we have planned to move from Server A to Server B to avoid/minimize server loads caused on Server A due to heavy traffic.

How should we begin ?
How can we minimize the downtime in migration. ?
How can we transfer our awstats logs from last 2 years to new server ?

We are mainly concerned about domains/dns setup where we have least knowledge these are only on Server A. We are also using custom nameservers and Servint nameservers for some domains respectively.
