Media Serving And Cache Daemon
what I want to do, have a "node" somewhere serve media (static) files from a central server, but cache the static files the first time they are hit, so subsequent requests to the "node" don't require getting the file from the central server.
Is there readily available solution to this?

Speed Up Serving Large Files
I'm working on a web site which will basically be a flash games portal. I have a dedicated server running Apache 2 on a 100mbit dedicated line but my download speed for large files (flash files of over 5mbs) is really slow. I am thinking this is because of Apache but I don't know much about this. I've read that I should change for a lighter http server for serving static files. The way my server is set up is I have 2 virtual machines running, one doing the PHP processing and the other serving static files, both running Apache, so if I have to change HTTP server for the static files it would be very easy. Although I am not sure if this is necessary or if I can tune Apache to push files faster than this.

Serving Data From 2 Hard Disks
I have a server with 2 hard drives, say drive A and drive B. Right now all my files, database and data is on drive A, and drive B is empty. Since I have another drive available, I want to split the load between the two drives. I'm ok with having the web pages and the database on one drive. I mostly want to just have the data (I have about 500GB of data) split between the two drives. Note that I want to avoid duplicating the data. I want to have each file on either drive A XOR drive B. Should I map a separate subdomain to drive B and then use that subdomain to serve the half of the data thats there? Is there something I can do with hard/soft links on the server so that even though the data is on 2 drives, users still use the same url to access data on either drive? Any other options?

Static File Serving - Performance
I'm planning to setup a server ONLY for hosting of static binary files varying from few KB to few MB in size. I've seen some of the litespeedtech performance benchmarks, which you can find here: [url] From the "small static file" benchmark chart, i can see that IIS6 beats lighttpd in this test. So i'm wondering does the IIS6 really have better performance at file hosting than lighttpd. Actually it does not matter which operating system i will be using at this server, since i will use it only for file serving. With lots of concurrent connections. Possibly thousands of connections. I need some feedbacks on this, so i can decide, IIS or lighttpd. Few more bucks for win2k3 won't be an issue here, if it's performance is better than lighttpd for this kind of use.

10 Second Lag Serving Static HTML
this isn't my server, so I don't have a lot of information about it, other than it's a Linux/Apache Dedicated server at EV1. (cPanel/WHM) There are other sites on the server, and they are running fine. One site has a terrible lag. It takes about 10 seconds to serve up a static HTML file.. Now, it's not like the server is slow. It's like this: You request a small HTML file. The site sits and thinks about it for about 10 seconds, and then after that everything processes quickly. The forum on the site is the same way. Everything you click on works fine and loads quickly after that initial delay passes. Is there a common configuration problem that might be causing this? If you want to see this phenomenon, here are a few test files: [url] [url] [url] [url]

Apache Serving Blank Pages

I see no errors in /var/log/messages either to show why this is happening. It's not all pages either just several various ones. I know it's not a programming issue either because the only thing the server is running is one instance of vBulletin. I look at top during this and CPU and RAM usage are very low. The only fix to get Apache to serve the pages is to restart it. Anyone have any clues on what it could be? I set my php.ini memory limit to a gig (I have 16 gigs in the sever)

Preferred Operating System For Web Serving
I have been online since 95 and I've got a lot of information I could help others with regarding web development and interface design. One thing I'm terrible at is System Administration, but I'm getting better and my first step is to pick a reliable operating system for both the webservers and the database servers. Would anyone be willing to answer the following questions or point me to a thread that already discusses these? A little background, our site has 200k members, 30k active and is growing by about 5k a week. We still run MySQL 4.0.27 on the DB servers and they are running FC2. The webservers are Apache 1.3.37 and PHP 4.4.2 running FC2 and FC4 as well. My questions 1. What OS would you prefer to upgrade to for the web servers? and a "few" reasons why? 2. What OS would you prefer to upgrade to for the database servers? and a "few" reasons why?

Problem Serving Gzipped Static Content
I'm trying to serve as much gzipped content as possible on my web site. I will gzip dynamic pages on the fly using PHP, and I plan to gzip static content just one time, not to use much CPU, and serve css.gz, .js.gz files, etc... So, I uploaded a test.html file and a .css file that changes the color of the text to red. I gzipped the css file: %gzip style.css I also uploaded an .htaccess file with this content: RewriteEngine on RewriteBase /gzip/ RewriteCond %{HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING} gzip RewriteRule ^(([^.]+.)+)css$ /$1css.gz For now I'm not going to include any gunzipped style sheet, just to make sure my browser picks the gzipped style sheet. I also uploaded a phpinfo.php file to make sure I have mod_gzip. So, here's the list of files I have: - .htaccess - style.css.gz - test.html - phpinfo.php But when I open the test.html file: [url] the style sheet isn't applied. If I upload a regular style.css file, it works fine. It seems the Rewrite rules aren't taken into account. Do you know how I could server the gzipped style sheet instead?

Don't need to manage mysql or anything. Not even php. Just serve files. A good fast OS? Something like lighttpd? Ioono? I'm currently doing 600gb of bandwidth per month. I'm expecting to do about 1000gb by the end of the year. Would a small server like a pentium 4 be able to handle just serving files?

An Otherwise Great Performing Server Now Delays Prior To Serving PHP/mysql
One of my dedicateds (Fedora 7 / apache 1.39 / php5 mysql5) has been running flawlessly but now has a strange ~4-5 second delay when serving up PHP/mysql pages such as Wordpress. I say delay because it appears to think about it for several seconds, then when the page finally begins the refresh process, everything serves up lightning fast. Latency is low, direct file downloads are faster than ever. ModSecurity is running, and accounts for about 1 second of that delay (tested with it on and off), but the other 3-4 seconds is a mystery.

So I came up with this: refuse_md1: deny message = The original message did not come from this site. condition = ${if eq{$sender_address}{}{yes}{no}} condition = ${if eq{$local_part}{userdomain.com}{yes}{no}} log_message = Refused a bounce message for userdomain.com However, this doesn't help. The emails are still going to the mailing queue and when I look at the Exim log I see the usual error message saying that the email was blocked because the account has run out of space.

This is very annoying and it only happens with them and one other corporate client i have. They check on multiple computers and it will never refresh and load the new changes. I think this is their network cache that their IT dept. set up. How can I get around this? I tried an htaccess trick I looked up for expiring files but it didnt work. PHP And Cache-Control
I seem to have the opposite problem of what most people complain about... I'm using some custom-built PHP scripts, the output of which is not getting cached. I want the output cached, because it doesn't change often. If it's relevant, I'm using ob_start() to serve up a GZIP-compressed page. I start off with a header("Cache-Control: maxage=3600, must-revalidate"). Yes, it's first, and yes, it's showing up properly in the browser. However, requesting the page again returns an HTTP 200, not the 304 I'm expecting. It's pulling down the whole page again. It's not changing in between requests, and I'm simply visiting the URL again, not hitting Refresh. (Although it really shouldn't matter.)

Mysql Cache On A Vps
[url] has an article on mysql query cache. It notes that in the mysql config file, having query-cache-type = 1 sets the mysql query cache. In mysql I note that SHOW VARIABLES LIKE '%query_cache%'; outputs +-------------------+---------+ | Variable_name | Value | +-------------------+---------+ | have_query_cache | YES | which indicates that cache is set, but... find . -name "my.cnf" ./usr/local/cpanel/whostmgr/my.cnf ./etc/my.cnf shows only these set-variable = max_connections=500 safe-show-database So where has query cache been set? At the server level? If so, am I able to set the query_cache_size and if so, which path? Anyone have any comments on their mysql optimization on a VPS?

Eaccelerator Cache Emptying Cron
I'm sure all of you who use eaccelerator know how big the cache can get and that it needs emptied manually. Well at least to my knowledge it does, the only thing I have seen that you can configure is the shm pruning. If anyone does know such a feature with eaccelerator please share. But I also notice a performance decrease and a few php errors mostly related to memory allocations here and there. Anyway I was piddling around and came up with a command to disable eaccelerator from php.ini, delete the cache folder and then enable it back. I figured this would be good as a daily cron. I would like some input if anyone knows any better ways. So I wanted to share this in case someone else here has the same problems with eaccelerator cache folder getting huge. If anyone knows a way to make this better or shorter please reply with solution. Of course this will vary depending on where your php.ini is and where your eaccelerator cache is. Just replace those values with yours. I'm sure there is also a way to use similar commands to find and input these values, again if anyone knows please share. Code: find /usr/local/lib -name 'php.ini' | xargs perl -pi -e 's/extension="eaccelerator.so"/;extension="eaccelerator.so"/g' ; rm -rf /usr/lib/php/eacc ; mkdir /usr/lib/php/eacc ; chmod 4777 /usr/lib/php/eacc ; find /usr/local/lib -name 'php.ini' | xargs perl -pi -e 's/;extension="eaccelerator.so"/extension="eaccelerator.so"/g'

Cache Systems For Apache In Windows

The server serve a lot of files larger than 10MB, so I want to cache as much of the files below 10mb as possible. First off I want to cache around 200k thumbnail files, where around 1000 new gets added every day. Secondly it would be preferred to cache dynamic files in a way that the file timestamp is checked at a regular interval, and then read again if timestamp has changed. Is there any free solutions on windows with apache for this?

Sda: For Cache Data Failed
We just upgraded our server with 8 brand new seagate cheetah 15k.5's, a battery backup unit, and a 256mb dimm for the raid controller. In the boot process, i noticed an error about caching or something. After analyzing the dmesg log, i found the error: sda: asking for cache data failed sda: assuming drive cache: write through It seems like the kernel can't get to the raid controllers cache, so it switches to the write through setting. I've benchmarked the harddisks with the write through, and write back setting. The odd thing is that both settings deliver the same performance. Normally, write back increases the performance with like 100%... That's why we bought the battery backup unit. So something is going wrong, but where lays the problem? I'd like to have code 304 - not modified - like when browser gets an image from cache. The dynamic url for image is being created only once - when the appication starts, and after that it stays unchanged, but I still can't force use the cached images - like when it is a static url - .../image.jpg.

Mod_cache Does Not Cache The Homepage But The Rest Is Cached
As many of you may know mod_cache does not cache directory index files, this can be fixed with mod_rewrite but the index page of the domain (the homepage) seems to be impossible to cache it. The following rules cache the folders but not the homedir (this means that www.thedomain.com/folder is cached but www.thedomain.com is not): DirectorySlash Off RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ([^.*]) RewriteCond "%{DOCUMENT_ROOT}%{REQUEST_URI}/index.htm" -f RewriteRule "^(.*)$" "$1/index.htm" [NC,L] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^([^.*])$ RewriteCond "%{DOCUMENT_ROOT}%{REQUEST_URI}/index.html" -f RewriteRule "^(.*)$" "$1/index.html" [NC,L] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^([^.*])$ RewriteCond "%{DOCUMENT_ROOT}%{REQUEST_URI}/index.php" -f RewriteRule "^(.*)$" "$1/index.php" [NC,L] Note that DirectorySlash should be off (or mod_dir not loaded) in order to work also with URL that end with no slash As I said before this will work for any folder but it does not work for public homedir directory. So when a user visit [url] it does not work (unless you type the name of the index file: [url] For me it is critical to make this work in someway, the index homepage is the main page that needs to be cached in my case (and in many others). Do you know any solution for this? I found the first message about this in the Internet in 2002 but I'm using last version of apache httpd and still does not work. If you have no idea about how to fix it, maybe you know some other easy alternative. Lighttpd + mod_cache + mod_deflate are not compatible: "mod_cache can be used in conjunction with other lighttpd plugins (except mod_deflate and mod_secdownload)"

Is There Such A Thing As A Content Cache, Like SimpleCDN But Not So Sophisticated?
I have a site where our budget is very constrained, and we're maxing out our unmetered pipe. The majority of the bandwidth is taken up by an active forum. I offloaded most of the static content (images, .js, .css files) to a CDN (SimpleCDN) which I've been pretty happy with, the costs are very reasonable and fit within our limited budget. They offered a service where if the content was not found on their network, it would check on our server for the file, retrieve it, and then serve it up from then on. Which was perfect for us as it allows us to use the CDN to serve image files uploaded by users in such a way that it's transparent to the end user. However they're discontinuing this service, and though they're offering a similar service (based on rsync), they're charging $150 setup fee! So basically I have to pay $150 to keep using the service I've been using for a while. Which I can't really do. So I'm trying to think of alternatives. I don't think I really need a full bore CDN, while we do have users from around the world, it's not a business site so a few ms isn't going to be the end of the world. I just need a file hosting solution that has decent performance and fairly inexpensive bandwidth. It's only 100-200GB / month maybe. At SimpleCDN that was only costing $8 / month. I looked at Amazon, but they charge 1 cent for 10,000 requests which for us adds up very fast. I'd almost think of just signing up for a Dreamhost account, but I would think using them to host just our images probably goes against their ToS.

HTTP Headers & Cache-control
I was running into a problem where PHP was automatically sending the following HTTP headers: Code: Cache-Control: no-store, no-cache, must-revalidate, post-check=0, pre-check=0 Pragma: no-cache This caused a problem in that my browser (Camino) would not let me view source without reloading the page. For state-based pages, that was a nightmare and meant I couldn't use my main browser for development! Now that I have identified the problem, I am wondering what the point of those headers are, and whether I need them. I can definitely overwrite them but am not sure if I should. My web app does set cookies (uses PHP sessions). I believe that it is the setting of the cookie that triggers PHP to send those headers. If I don't set a cookie on a PHP script, those headers are not sent. how I can manage cache-control properly so that I can view source in Camino? Is no-cache etc. really important if you're setting cookies?
