What Hard Drive Manufacturer Do You Use And Have The Least Failures With
Aug 3, 2009what others are using in their servers when it comes to hard drive preferred manufacturer.
We use to only use Seagate but in some recent servers switched to Western Digital Caviar Black Drives (1TB) and experienced 1 failure after 30 days. Not that this makes us think that these are bad drives as we have also had failures with Seagate as well but would really like to know if there any difference in the reliability between manufactures?

The backup was stored in Server Repository and was also uploaded to ftp....

In personal repository showed in plesk :169 MB

Then why does the error occur ?

Massive DDoS
Sep 16, 2007I have a problem with a customer. For the last 48 hours he has been receiving a massive DDoS at his server. I tried blocking the darn IPs but they keep coming and with several hundreds of connections each:

Apache has over 14000 connections. I tried using mod_evasive but didn't do anything and the server has been out without httpd for hours now. Any advices? This is a Hsphere server (I hate it personally) with 4GB RAM and a dual optero 246. I have the mexclients setting at 550.

Jun 7, 2007I have a dedicated windows server. I have it protected to the best of my ability (disabling administrative shares, anti-virus, anti-spyware, disabled remoted desktop, firewall, etc.). The purpose for the server is to host game servers. Over the past month, ive noticed massive amounts of bandwidth being used. For example Windows reports the bandwidth usage at a little over 2 GB in 1 day, yet on my control panel which reads the traffic from the switch, it shows that 9 GB have been transferred. I asked the colo what's happening and they said that traffic that is blocked by the firewall is still counted toward my monthly limit. But how can there be 7 GB of blocked traffic, keeping in mind i never had this problem months ago. As a test, last night i disabled all game servers and applications that use bandwidth. In the past day over 9GB has been transferred, despite the fact that i have nothing running that takes more then 50KB of bandwidth.
Aside from these bandwidth issues, everything is running fine, my passwords are still the same, etc. Is there anyway detect security holes, so that i may patch them when i reinstall the OS? I asked my colo for a security audit.
My question is, do you think my server has been compromised?
Massive VBulletin And Directory Attacks
Nov 4, 2009I've noticed that vBulletin and one of my directories is getting hit hard for the same file by sites in the Netherlands, Russia, Vietnam and China.
The lines typically state the same, trying to hit a file that isn't there, which may be in a forum/ or forums/ directory instead of the root.
'/home/mysite/public_html/forumdisplay.php' not found or unable to stat
'/home/mysite/public_html/newthread.php' not found or unable to stat
What have you guys done for this? I'm assuming an .htaccess edit may be in order. I'm also hoping to track IP addresses so that I can keep adding them easily. I wish it was more simple to do it on the server level using whm since it's usually accessible everywhere.
Massive Photo / Picture Hosting
Oct 7, 2008Can any suggestion a host, and incidently perhaps the best album script, to host as much as 100,000 photos? I'm not sure size yet, but 10-15 gigs is expected. Currently there's 40k photos, but I'm leaving room for expansion.

What File System For A Massive Disk Array
Jun 2, 2009I am trying to figure out what file system to use for my server. It has 24 hard drives, 2 run the OS in RAID 1, and the other 22 are in RAID 10. When I was installing the OS (Ubuntu 8), I kept on getting problems when I tried to partition and format the second drive (the one with the 22 disks in RAID 10) and it keeps failing on me. I then changed the file system type from ext3 to XFS and it worked fine. I also gave it another try and did not partition/format the second drive and decided to do it manually once the OS was installed. When I did it it told me that the file system was too large for ext3. So my guess is that ext3 has a limit on the size of the file system it is being installed on.
Anyway, so I am wondering, is there any other file system that will get me the best performance, mainly I/O performance, that I can install? I would like to stick with Ubuntu OS. This server will mainly serve large files for download over HTTP.

VPS With A Large Amount Of RAM
May 22, 2007I've been with zone.net for a couple months now, and I have a guaranteed 512MB of memory, which I seem to constantly be hitting, which seems to result in processes being killed and http access vanishing. Growing quite annoying.
I'm looking into moving onto a new provider that can provide more guaranteed RAM for about the same price.
Space isn't a huge deal, I'd do fine with a meager 5GB. Bandwidth I need at least 200GB, but wouldn't mind more.
I'd like to stay managed if possible, as I'm not as well versed in server workings as I should be. Also am in need of cPanel, which I know is a spendy sucker.
My budget is something around $70 a month, and I don't really want to go much higher than that. Still a poor college boy :/
Can anyone suggest such a provider? I've browsed around a lot of the VPS hosts but can't seem to find one that has as much RAM as I need for a decent price. All the ones that seem to have 512MB+ are pretty expensive, and offer a lot more other stuff (space/bandwidth) than I need.
As a final note, the line speed isn't that big of a deal. I'm currently on a 3mbit and am surviving, but going back to a higher speed line would be great
Large Amount Of INSERTs Into DB
Jun 6, 2007I started tracking and collecting information about every page load on my site, which made the DB grow very fast. In 24 hours I had over 1.4 million INSERTs, so the DB will grow by over 170MB/day. The inserts so far didnt affect the performance of the server (dual clovertown, 4gb ram, SCSI HD), but at this rate the DB will grow by over 5GB per month. Is it a good idea to let the DB grow to those sizes? Would it affect performance if a table had several 10s of millions of rows? Public doesnt run any SELECT/UPDATE queries on that table, only admin does (me).

To make some backups. It works fine, but here's the problem: it really takes a toll on server load. Server load seems to go up at by around +3 or more. I'm wondering if there is a way to use less CPU usage on that command, or is there another command that uses less usage. I'm not concerned if it backs up slower by starving the amount of CPU usage it has, so if there's a way to do this any method?
VPS With A Nice Amount Of Quality Bandwidth In US
Sep 29, 2008I'm currently hosting my website on core2duo / 2GB RAM dedicated server. Thing is, programmer did a VERY good job optimizing scripts and this server is way too much than I need. The average server load is usually 0.00 - 0.20. I'm thinking of switching to either a cheaper dedicated server or VPS.
We use 300GB-1TB of bandwidth per month though. 90% of our traffic is from US. Do you know any good VPS solution for this?

Dec 1, 2007I got a dedicated server which hosted 45 sites, one of those sites contains a vbulletin forum application since january 2007 , but from two weeks i found that there is a high amount of Queries from the this database which leads the server load to be always in RED and exceeds 200 or 300! and the memory is totally consumed!
i tried alot to solve this problem as :
- reinstall the vb.
- change the vb path to another ( considering it as attack)
- installing BFD , APF , ( considering it as attack )
- upgrading to apache 2.2.6 , PHP 5.2.5 , MySQL 5.0.24 ( considering it as a bug)
