MRTG And 3550

Aug 15, 2007

I have mrtg working fine on about 10 2650's, however now that I am trying to add 2950 and 3550's I cant seem to get MRTG to connect to get data.

I added the community the same as our other communities.

snmp-server community blah-r34d RO 30
snmp-server host 10.10.0.134 blah-r34d snmp

the 10.10.48.3 is the IP to vlan1 for the switch.

Packet Loss On Cisco 3550

Mar 19, 2007

I'm trying to find out why a single interface is causing packet loss on my entire network.

The network consists of four 2924's trunked to a 3550. I have about 20 vlans and a single default route for all traffic my uplink.

The network is perfect until I enable a single server. After I issue a 'no shut' on the interface packet loss is anywhere from 5% to 20% for anything going through the 3550 or even pings from the 3550 to other switches or the uplink.

Here's the statistics/settings of the interface after 1 minute of activity:

Code:

interface FastEthernet0/1

MRTG Usage Explanations

Oct 25, 2007

My ISP is using MRTG (95th percentile) for my monthly billing. However the numbers showing on my "usage" page aren't adding up. Well, to clarify, the number by which they bill me at is the "Last 30 days usage (Metered 95%): xxxx mb/s". But this number isn't reflecting what I am seeing in the individual Daily/Weekly/Monthly stats and graphs.

Daily:
Max in: 38.0 kb/s
Max out 320.9 kb/s
Avg In: 4216.0 b/s
Avg out 24.1 kb/s

Weekly:
Max In: 1692.4 kb/s
Max Out 5675.1 kb/s
Avg In: 26.9 kb/s
Avg Out 86.8 kb/s

Monthly:
Max In: 3541.9 kb/s
Max Out 5635.4 kb/s
Avg In: 298.4 kb/s
Avg Out 410.4 kb/s

Last 30 Days uaage (Metered 95%): 4518.43 kb/s

Now for two weeks my server was pushing nearly 10 mb/s (95th percentile only use the HIGHER of the In OR Out as its measurement)- and then for the next 10 days my server has barely pushed 100 kb/s. 10 days ago the "Last 30 days usage" number was 4480.1 mb/s, but today, 10 days later, the "LAst 30 days usage" is 4518.4 kb/s. My ISP tells me that "last 30 days uage" is calculated every 5 minutes. But if my usage 10 days ago was 4480kb/s and my server has barely pushed ANY bandwidth since, shouldn't the laws of averages see that number steadily declining?

As an example: If I pushed exactly 10mb/s for exactly two weeks, then pushed 0mb/s for the next two weeks....then the average mb/s for a 30 day period (not calculating 95th %) would be 5mb/s. And as the 3rd week started, I would steadily see the 30 day usage start to decline and eventually reach 5mb/s on the last day of the 30 period. This is a logical, and my approach, to understanding this - yet the numbers aren't indicating this.

Installing MRTG In My Linux Server

Jul 24, 2009

I tried installing MRTG in my Linux Server by using help from -

[url]

What i have done till now is -

cd /usr/local/src
gunzip -c mrtg-2.16.2.tar.gz | tar xvf -
cd mrtg-2.16.2

./configure --prefix=/usr/local/mrtg-2

make

make install
After this i am unable to understand what to do, and how to start MRTG graphs.

* the next last step says,

CONFIGURATION

The next step is to configure mrtg for monitoring a network device. This is done by creating an mrtg.cfg file which defines what you want to monitor. Luckily, you don't have to dive straight in and start writing your own configuration file all by yourself. Together with mrtg you also got a copy of cfgmaker. This is a script you can point at a router of your choice; it will create a mrtg configuration file for you. You can find the script in the bin subdirectory.

cfgmaker --global 'WorkDir: /home/httpd/mrtg'
--global 'Options[_]: bits,growright'
--output /home/mrtg/cfg/mrtg.cfg
community@router.abc.xyz

This example above will create an mrtg config file in /home/mrtg/cfg assuming this is a directory visible on your webserver. You can read all about cfgmaker in cfgmaker. One area you might want to look at is the possibility of using --ifref=ip to prevent interface renumbering troubles from catching you.

^^ this is what i am not able to understand.

When i ran the script, (below mention) it gave many errors, how to resolve them ?

[root@c bin]# ./cfgmaker --global 'WorkDir: /home/httpd/mrtg' --global 'Options[_]: bits,growright' output /home/mrtg/cfg/mrtg.cfg eth0

Irregular Bandwidth Usage In MRTG

Apr 11, 2008

I run a server with lighttpd web server. The server is for file hosting, see the mrtg

[url]

The server is on 1 Gbit shared connection.

The bandwidth seems increase/decrease quickly. Can this happen? I have another file hosting server, on that bandwidth usage is almost sine wave.

Lighttpd web server is running properly and never crashed.

why mrtg screws graphs up if bandwidth usage goes over 120 mbit/sec? See an attachment. First graph from mrtg, second one provider's graph which is correct. In mrtg.cfg I got MaxBytes[_]: 2250000000
