Jumpline.com Charged My Credit Card Without My Consent
Feb 21, 2008
I opened a free 1 year hosting account at Jumpline.com through an offer they were running and never used it. While opening the account I had given my credit card details for verification.
Last month I got a mail from them with an Invoice saying that my account would be renewed. I replied back to that mail asking them to cancel my account as I was not using it and not charge my credit card. As I did not get any reply from them, I assumed they must have cancelled my account.
Today I was shocked to see that they had charged me $191.40 inspite of my mail. When I opened a Support ticket I got this reply from them:
Unfortunately I do not see any other Support Tickets submitted by you regarding the cancellation of your account. Jumpline.com sent out a notification via email 30 days prior to the bill date informing you of the upcoming renewal.
If you wish to cancel your service, you must do so prior to your next due date to avoid being charged for additional month(s) of service. A completed cancellation form is required to remove all products you wish to cancel.
You will need to login to your Customer Manager [url] to do this. Once you login to the Customer Manager you will click on the Change Renewal Options link under Product Information.
JUMPLINE.COM does not offer a prorated refund based on the early cancellation of your hosting account. If you are on a multi-month payment interval and wish to cancel a hosting account prior to the end of the term, you will forfeit any money paid for the hosting account. Once money has been received on a hosting account, this account will be considered under contract for the service provided by JUMPLINE.COM for the term of agreement. This policy is in effect for all hosting accounts at JUMPLINE.COM.
The account(s)/product(s) will remain active and continue to be billed unless we receive the completed form.
They could've replied to my mail with this information 1 month ago and I would have done the needful but they did not. Inspite of requesting for a refund, they are not giving me one. This is a clear breach of trust. Should I apply for a chargeback with my credit card company?

Is it normal for a hosting provider to ask you to fill out a two page form to verify credit card and billing address information which you must fax or e-mail in with a photo copy of your drivers license and credit card? I've never came across this until now and was wondering if something like this was safe? This is for a dedicated server with the RackVibe (JustEdge.net) hosting provider.

to keep credit card information on one of my sites for a few days to process orders offline. Once ordered, I would like to blank out the credit card numbers. What would the SQL code be to change all credit card information in the table `orders` field `cc_numbers` to `11111111111111111` be?

I have phoned 3 times and they have tested two different cards that I know work. For some unknown reason it can't update and shows my previous credit card. I have tried to update from Master Card to a Visa card.
Has anyone of you problems updating your payment infos in Orbit? Further, I think it's strange they dont accept any other payment method. Have any of you been able to wire or somthing?

When paying for my server, I prefer to pay with PayPal. Is it normal when I want to pay with PayPal (if they except this), the hosting company also wants my CC number and CVV2 code. What's the use then of paying with PayPal.
I don't mind to identify myself with copies of driver licences, but CC is different story.

I am developping a cart for a few clients and credit card numbers need to be stored in the database.
I was wondering if it was acceptable to let the client decides if he wants to encrypt or not cc numbers. There are several advantages/disadvatanges for both sides, like the key management issues and lost keys. Some persons argue that if access to your db is well secured encryption is not needed.

I noticed recently that HostGator charged me two times, them I found they kept doing that to me ever since last year! I sent them a email. Here's their reply:
I show that you have created multiple PayPal subscriptions on your account that are paying for the same invoice. Our billing system has credited your account for the extra payment. To correct this, please login to your PayPal account and cancel all subscriptions:
1. Click the My Account tab.
2. Click the History subtab.
3. Choose the Subscriptions field from the Show dropdown menu.
4. Check the From box and change the date back 2 years.
5. Click Search.
6. To view the details of a specific Subscription Creation, click Details in the Details column.
7. At the bottom of this page, click Cancel Subscription.
8. On the confirmation page, click Cancel Subscription again.
Once you've canceled the subscriptions, please let the credit on your account run out and pay for the next invoice(s). Once the credit has run out, please re-initiate only one Paypal subscription on your next billing date.
If you have any questions, please let us know. Thank you for your continued business.
I'm so angry

I signed up a new hosting account two days ago. Yesterday, I found my telephone +91.1142316457 had been changed to +1.911142316457 and obviously telephone could not be confirmed. Their chat window vanishes on submit and telephone is not attended - I left voice message. I created support ticket and emailed back.
24 hours after signup I requested order cancellation. Despite reminder every few hours, I am not receiving any response.

what's ecatel would be
1- take high money from customers
2- would'n be customers create any support ticket
3- if we create ticket , should be wait till 24hours for respond , also should be write adjuration that will get the respond from them
4- any upgrade request such as , RAM , say you as 4 working days, it's probably done after 30 days,
they are still not install our vlan request more than as 30 days , we paid instant , but support is die
5- if any server will be down , they are really really relax and customer credit is not important for them
we have 5 servers on ecatel and 3 servers on iweb
i would be compare them
1- ecatel
one of our important server( shared server) got the down over 80hours, ecatel still relax
we might ticket , that what's problem plz reboot server , respond us after 6 hours , > ecatel: have you reviewd your ticket history? you open more tickets here,
just look at the support and make SCORE
still our server down for more than as 80 hours , it's really normal?
we pay against good support from datacenter, also it's their DUTTY solve and respond to all tickets and keep happy customers
sometimes they closed our ticket without responding!
we choose support team by name activelobby, for make out any issues, also they said it's DC problem that should be solve
it's better we will transfer and end business with ecatel
2- iweb
really fantastic , instant respond , we might over 200 tickets , they are happy to solve and complete our requests without any displeasure

Not sure on industry standard here, but I am now curious about this issue.
I placed an order with a company, paid for a setup, first month etc. On receiving the order, I was given the wrong product. Which was fixed for me within a few days. I was happy to even pay for this which the host declined.
Fast forward a week or so. Still in the first month, and issues are still not resolved.
I've now removed credit card information from the billing system (yes I know, shouldn't do it) with good reason. I expected to have to pay another month, and that was fine.
Anyway, month ends and I am charged on a credit card that was removed from the billing system. When confronted about it, I was told standard practice. I think this is highly unethical to hold details after they had been removed.
Is this indeed standard practice in this industry? Do a majority of other hosts do the same thing?
Now again, I am only to happy to pay another month, just not from a credit that was removed, which is why it was removed. I would've sent a check, or done a deposit. I do understand that fraud, etc is very high in this industry. I have a host or two not give me service because of the email address I used during sign up, but when changed, I received service.

I was building a 1u server a month or so ago to colocate. After screwing up the purchase of the raid card (got a pci 64 or something) its been sitting next to me not doing much. I need to go ahead and find a good raid card and get this colocated,
I have literally spent hours on Newegg, Amazon and Ebay and found nothing that really jumps out at me. When people were helping with the build before, Adaptec was recommended, but the card is now deactivated on newegg so I am looking again.

Performance wise is fantastic though. Anyone know of any cheaper alternative to areca that can support Centos 5 and Raid 6 SAS Drives?

Currently I am building a new server based on this chassis:
[url]
In this chassis, I am going to be using an ASUS M2NPV-VM motherboard [url], and I'll be installing a 3ware 8006-2LP RAID card.
I just want to make sure that that RAID card will work with that motherboard, and also I want to verify that the Supermicro CSE-RR1U-X riser card is the correct model for this motherboard and RAID card.
I've got a couple of basic servers built in the supermicro mini 1U (CSE-512L-260B) chassis, but I've never had to deal with riser cards before, so I wanted to make sure everything is compatible and is going to fit correctly before I purchase them.

i have just installed esx server from vmware which as far as i know is a moded version of redhat. i just brought that lan card and put it in. when intsalling the os it seemed to pick it up straight away. and it wanted to use the tulip driver and infact on the driver cd tuplip is given. so i thought it was all well uptill i tried logging in through the browser insterface. it came up with nothing. so i did ifconfig which only showed the lo device. i then did a lsmod tulpis ind it brought up this.
vmnixmod size 3
mousedev
hid
input
usb-uhci
usbcore
but no network drive.
im not very good with linuk so im not sure what the interface is called. i tried ifconfig eth0 up but i dont know how to check if its called eth0 or somehting else. their is no gui just a bash.
i then tried netconfig. it worked fine and i restarted the box. it still dident come up.
so i thought maybe the driver wasent installed after all so i went to the cd and got the file off it and when i typed in make i got

Thinking of entry-level collocation for a 1u or 2u 1750 or 2850 server (but not a separate hardware firewall at this point) I'm wondering if I should equip it with a DRAC card on a separate switch port ($10 more per month for an extra switch port). However one concern: how secure is a DRAC card? It would seem to allow you to login with a standard username and strong password, but I still fear it could be brute forced since I'm not aware of a brute-force-detection mechanism that would run on the drac card itself.
Is the only way I can use a DRAC card and feel secure about it to also have a box in front of the DRAC card to lock down and monitor access to the DRAC's IP? Or am I worrying over nothing (I'm not very familiar with DRAC cards yet.)

I've been reading more and more posts about how a quality network card is important. We build all of our servers from new, quality parts but honestly we always rely on the built in NIC on the motherboard (which are brand name motherboards, but nonetheless)
How can a lesser quality NIC effect a server other than total failure of network activity? What signs should we look for and what are quality brands? My first guess is dropped packets or low throughput. I've also heard of people saying that load can go up from a bad NIC - is there any truth to that?

I was wondering if anyone has had luck with 3ware 9650's in a RAID 10 to help bring down iowait?
I currently have a VPS node that see's spikes in iowait and i'd like to bring it down. I've been considering getting a 9650 in a JBOD setup (so then I don't need to reinstall the whole node) with a battery backup to enable the cache.
My two questions are:
- In JBOD, does the write cache enable at all?
- Would the write cache help bring down the iowait much?
Drive wise we have 4 x 500GB drives in a raid10 (soft for now).

I know there is chargeback and all, but here in our country.. I heard from my lawyer I could get sued if I charge back, and banks here generally does not approve of such actions.
Anyways, I have a really lousy windows reseller provider and I will be moving the remaining accounts out soon, since their support is no longer responding to anything I ask...
What I fear is the monthly billing will still continue, and I have no means of demanding them to end it..
Would I get into trouble if I decide to just close my cc instead?
