I'm looking for a VPS with root access so I can play around with Ruby on Rails, mongrel, litespeed and nginx. So far the only thing I've found in my price range and with the proper privileges is the standard plan on eapps
http://eapps.com/Docs/VPSStandardPrices.jsp
I would sign up but the disk space and data transfer is a bit puny ... I was wondering if anyone knew of any other solid VPS hosting out there?

I don't use anything like active directory to manage my windows servers. I just manage them individually.
I need to make a change to terminal services configuration on all of them. I don't want to login to each one and manually edit it.
How the hell can I do this in Windows?
In Linux i could knock up a script in about 5 minutes with expect that would login to every single one and make the change i wanted.

I recently acquired a private rack with my hosting company and I wanted to place few servers in there. The server purchased at different intervals had different specification.
While it was okay with the sales engineer as I asked them before placing the order. The support has come up now saying that that cannot put my machines there because of their different specifications.

I want to offer Resellers with their own Private Name Servers however don’t want to / can’t give every reseller 2 IP address for the name servers (costs etc...) I have read that I can use the same IP's as my Main Name servers for my clients private name servers. I have been in to WHM and ticked the 'Share Name Server IP's' box, then added name servers for a reseller e.g. ns1.reseller.com and ns2.reseller.com
I have then updated the name servers on a domain I only use for testing, 123-reg says everything is fine etc... and it looks like I’m sorted.
Anyway I waited a few days to make sure the name servers had propagated then tried to access the domain. Well I can't ....
I've been back to WHM and checked everything, it looks fine. There are A Records within my DNS for the name servers and they seem to be the same as the main name servers that do work.

I have an interesting situation on my CentOS 4 server. I have a number of virtual adapters (e.g. eth0:1, eth0:2 etc), and for some reason all outbound traffic is going through one of these, not eth0. If I go to ipchicken.com, it shows the ipaddress of a virtual adapter, not the normal eth0 adapter.
I have been looking around for information on how to set the default adapter to eth0, but I can't seem to find anything. I can't reboot yet, as it's a production server, so I have to wait for 'scheduled maintenance'. If that's the solution, I can try it, but I am sure there is another underlying issue/routine here.
Is there a way, while live, to set the outbound adapter back to eth0?
Please note, that I have only just realized this has happened. In fact, it has been this way since November. I can tell because server name stamps on Email messages sent from this server indicate a virtual domain at that IP address. I recall I had done some work around that time, which had involved me ifup'ing and ifdown'ing some of these adapters (but not eth0, or the eth0:100 adapter (if I recall correctly) that is now the default).
Also note that I have groups of eth0 adapters, such like:
eth0:1
eth0:2
eth0:3
eth0:100
eth0:101
eth0:102
It's the eth0:100 adapter that is now the default.

I am currently with the planet and am happy with them, however as part of a new venture I need to gather a list of hosts as well as the planet that will be able to cater to the ventures needs and go to tender with the requirements.
ThePlanet offer something called a virtual rack. This is cheaper than renting a dedicated rack, allows for Gb networking but doesnt not allow for a SAN. Do other providers offer something similar? The cost of putting a machine on the virtual rack is not that much more expensive than just renting the machine. I guess there isn't too much to these set-ups to be fair.
If not, then we are looking for dedicated racks, with the ability to host a SAN at some point, but starting off with say 3 servers (2 web servers, 1 storage server with raid5 6Tb of hdd). These servers will be dealing with network cameras although I don't think that many will be streaming at once but the network capacity does need to be there.
Who's door should I be knocking on to find out some prices?
One final thing, should I bother looking for co-lo providers as well? We are in the Uk but not precious about our host being in the same country at all (it would be nice but uk prices are ££). Really, all we would be able to do with co-lo is buy the hardware outright to save price as we are not interested in looking after the hardware.

I have a lot of questions here so if you can't answer them all I understand. even pointing me somewhere where I could get the answers would be appreciated; hardware sites focusing on server hardware, forums focusing on such, etc.
we plan to have three different types of servers:
- db server (self explanatory. mysql. for forums, mysql driven sites.)
- file server (lots of files around ~2-10MB, consistant 70mbps right now, but we want more room for upgrades. needs a LOT of storage room.)
- web server (lots of php files, but also static things like plain html, images, etc. also includes all misc services for the setup-- dns, etc.)
could I be given a rundown for which hardware each of the three should have? I don't need specifics, even just knowing that more ram is important here while cpu doesn't matter as much, or that the fastest disks available are a must, etc would all be valuable info for me. despite that, I certainly wouldn't mind specific hypothetical hardware configs.
for the database server I'm assuming the more ram the better. not entirely sure about the cpu? also not positive on disks...
for the fileserver, how much ram would be practical or useful? disk io will be an issue I'm because plenty of people will be pulling files at once so the disk needs to read from multiple places. scsi (and even raptors) are not an option as we need 750GB+ of space on a reasonable budget. more ram will take some load of of the disks, but how much is neccessary / reasonable?
for the web server I'm assuming cpu first, then ram, but it'll likely need less ram than the db server?
I'm more lost on the disks than anything. scsi on the fileserver is not an option under any circumstances due to $/GB. for the db & web server I'm willing to pay for scsi if the performance increase really does warrant the extra money, but I'd like to be convinced before shelling it out. if you have benchmarks geared at server hardware when it comes to disks I'd really appreciate it.
also, what's the best way to network these together when colocated? each one with a dual gigabit ethernet port and then the communications go to and from the router?

I'm trying to create a directory, "hello", so I log in via SSH and CD to /proc, as this is where I want the directory to be. I type, "mkdir hello" and I get the following;
mkdir: cannot create directory `hello': No such file or directory
I've searched around for the error, and I've found two mentioned problems;
Persmissions
Parent directory doesn't exist.
However, the parent directory; /proc does exist and it has the permissions 7777.

i'm trying to configure PHP, as I really need to turn magic quotes off and raise the memory limit. i don't want to use .htaccess - too many sites
I got plesk 8.2.1, php5.1
well, to make it short, I ran 'phpinfo()' to see where php.ini was: etc/php.ini
I change that, restart httpd, nothing happens. restart the server, nothing still. my changes are not applied when I run 'phpinfo()' again.
i try 'locate php.ini' from the terminal, there are a few!
/usr/local/psa/admin/conf/php.ini
/usr/local/psa/admin/conf/php.ini.def
/usr/local/sitebuilder/php.ini
/etc/php.ini
/etc/php.ini.
/etc/php.ini.saved_by_psa
/etc/php.ini.rpmsave
... plus some in the opt folder (that should be just the cache, uh?)
the problem is that I tried to open all of them, to see where the hell php was getting the settings from, but none of them seem to reflect php's settings.
meaning, I don't know what file I can use to configure PHP.
all of them, for instance, say 'memory_limit: 32M', but php is set at 8M, and phpinfo() tells me memory_limit 8M.
any idea why this might be happening?
does Plesk have some tool to configure PHP that makes PHP ignore my changes?

my server really used a lot of bandwidth,

If your happy with your current hosting provider why change? Maybe you have found a better deal, but is it really worth it to switch to save a few bucks if your happy, I would say no.
What if you have noticed major changes in loading time?
What if there has been downtime?
What if they dont offer the support you need when you need it.
If a hosts changes prices on you?

I would like set backup for my vps in a specific way but it seem is not possible..
I would like set weekly backup for the whole vps accounts. This can be set easily by choosing "weekly" and by ticking Retention option Monthly..Like that daily and monthly backup will be not performed and only weekly backup will be done...well. Now I would like allow for some specific account more interval like also daily or also monthly or also daily and monthly...
This seem to be not possible under WHM....I see only the option to choose some specific account to make or not backups...but not to choose more interval..
So I must probably do that manually and set a cron job for the specific account I need but not see exactly how I must do..In fact am not very confident with SSH and I don't know exactly what code to type...

I know nothing about IIS as I ormally use Linux / Apache so I'm not sure this is possible.
I have built a site in PHP that the client now wants to move over to a IIS-hosted server. Although it's all in PHP because it was a re-build of an old static site I used ModRewrite to make all the page .html.
I know IIS doesn't have a URL rewrite feature as such. What I was wondering is, is it possible to configure IIS so that a PHP page can have a .html extension?

I've been hosting with medialayer for a while now, and to date have had quite few problems with their hosting/uptime/etc.
I host my main website's support site with them, and have recently run into a few issues... issues which I'm not sure how to resolve.
The thing is, the helpdesk developer was recently looking into our setup, and found there are some issues. He has requested that the open_basedir be modified to a particular value for our vhost (which to my knowledge, is not a security threat, etc.).
Medialayer says they can't make the change, because of how directadmin works, it won't be permanent. At the same time, the developer says it is possible to do this and make it a permanent change through this
file /usr/local/directadmin/data/templates/virtual_host.conf ...
Now I am unsure as how to resolve the issue because I need this change made, but am not sure it is possible, or who is wrong and who is right. I'm not trying to point fingers, but I would really like to know what the best thing to do in this situation is.
