Hostingplex - 3rd Shift Admin Removes VPS And Destroys $1000s In Development

May 14, 2007

STAY AWAY FROM HOSTINGPLEX! OR SHOULD IT BE HOAX-ING-PLEX? TOTAL INCOMPETENCE!

After one week and no email on my new VPS and repeated requests by the admins to document what the problem was over and over again I decided to contact sales and report how unsatisfied I was with their service.

The 3rd shift admin promptly removed my VPS and destroyed thousands of dollars worth of development.

I guess if you are that lame that you can't get email working on a week you need to lash out and cause damage to someone. I'll be calling in the morning to see if this is regular policy to immediately void a contract and destroy the current working website wothout any warning.

Reponse from hoaxingplex admin below.

Hello,

We haverefunded the payment and removed the vps, your domain is not registered through us so you already have access to reconfigure it for a new vps, we are not withholding access to anything.

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Update Destroys DNS - Can't Log In Anymore

Feb 25, 2015

Symptoms are that two of my domains are not resolved anymore, one of which is my mail, the other the plesk default. So even I try to login by ip, it bounces to the default name and that does not resolve.

This probably happened yesterday morning and i see an autoupdate log, so i can't think what else would cause this out of the blue, since i am on holiday and have not touched the server for three weeks.

The log doesn't really have errors, just one warning i saw, about packages not beeing updated, using old ones. But that was only passenger, so ok i guess. The log is rather big and so i didn't read it all. It ends by saying patch for 12.0.18 will not be applied and errors in apt-get update, that i mentioned.

The domains were set up like many others that still work, as masters.

I can log in as root, so if i could just let me log in by ip again.

Linux auringostaitaan.fi 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.63-2+deb7u1 x86_64

Development Server From Old PC

Apr 19, 2008

I have an old PC kicking around that I'd like to turn in to a server connected to my home network for testing/previewing sites. The PC currently has Win XP Pro installed.

I propose to use Apache, complete with MySQL and PHP.

Do I need to have Win XP installed or does Apache work standalone? If I do need an OS, should I use Ubuntu?

Development On Laptop And Desktop

Aug 29, 2008

I am setting up xampp on my desktop and when at home, I can develop on either the desktop or my laptop using xttp://localhost/ or xttp://desktop/. When I suddenly need to travel, what's the best/easiest/fastest way to make sure I have the files I need to work with on my laptop?

Is it to install xampp on my laptop, and then copy the files I need from /xampp/htdocs over from the desktop? How would I copy the MySQL databases over as well?

I was also looking into Microsoft's SyncToy 2.0. When combined with scheduled tasks I can do automatic sychronizations once per day. Multiple times per day would be ideal... but I could set up pairings and do manual copying everytime I need to run out.

Are there better ways? I could install the 'master' server on my laptop, but I would prefer to keep it on my desktop (more space, more power, etc.)

Setting Up Identical Development Server

Sep 4, 2008

I have a dedicated Centos 5 server that is a live production server.

Now I need to have a server for testing things like new kernels, updated packages or changed settings to check if the web applications still run after these updates or changes before I update the live production server.

For this purpose I think the best way would be to have local virtual machines under vmware, also putting Centos 5 onto the virtual machine and even creating snapshots of it, before an update in case the update breaks too many things, I could just revert back.

My question is how can I make sure that I install the exact same packages and same versions of everything onto the development server that I have on the production server now?

How do I create an exact duplicate of my production server before I start to test updates?

Development Tools On Dedicated Servers

Jul 21, 2008

I have a CentOS dedicated server that does not have gcc, make, other standard develomplent tools installed. The provider adamantly refuses to offer any assistance citing terms of the contract.

Being a newbie in running servers I have trouble finding binary form of packages matching the version of my OS and pre-installed libraries.

Obviously I cannot compile anything without a compiler (including the compiler itself!).

I have downloaded the centos distro, and mounted iso on my server, but that was wrong version. Turns out the right release is only available via bittorrent - which I again cannot install without gcc.

What is "industry standard" for dedicated Linux servers in this respect: do providers typically pre-install tools like gcc? or they leave users figure that out on their own?

Maintaining Production/Development Environment

Sep 2, 2008

Working on bringing up a new site and was looking to solicit some feedback regarding the optimum way to maintain build/production integrity.

I currently use FileZilla FTP client, set file override to trigger on size and do a bulk upload of the entire site.

The problem is that I need to exclude certain files and directories like the image directory and the configure.php etc. every time I do an upload.

I have used Dreamweavers development/production sync features for a client site in the past and that was very good.

I was thinking about writing my own script to do the maintenance work, but thought I would ask if there is a better way.

How do you all maintain your production/development synchronization?

Mac OSX : MAMP Vs Ubuntu Install For Local Development

I have in the past downloaded/installed MAMP for PHP/MySQL development on my Mac laptop.

I recently learned about Ubuntu and am intrigued.

I need to either reinstall MAMP (from www.mamp.info/) which is nothing more than a button click or two.

I do not want to find myself inside a unix shell on the command line - if that's required to install Ubuntu

Apache :: Accept Files In Home Directory - Development Server Access Denied

Jul 19, 2014

I have recently switched from Ubuntu to Mint because I would like to enjoy out of the box functionality. I installed Apache, PHP and Mysql. When I go to localhost, the page displays correctly indicating that the server is functioning. In /var/www/html I created devPages. In devPages I created a symlink to a directory in my home directory where I keep all of my html/php files.

When I point my browser to http://localhost/devPages/1/ I get "You don't have permission to access /devPages/1/ on this server". This appears to be a permissions/ownership issue. I don't want to change the permissions for the directory or files in the home directory because they are set to work properly on my production server. Is there a way to get apache to accept files in my home directory?

I have set owner and group for devPages and the symlink to www-data. Set permissions to 755 for devPages.

By the way, under Ubuntu, I have always used a symlink and it always worked without any issues.

SSH - Only VPS Admin

Apr 21, 2009

I've recently picked up a position that is *mostly* web development, but they would also like me to learn how to admin their server, which is a VPS running the latest stable v. of Apache.

The kicker is that there is no web-based control panel. It all has to be done via SSH.

I've been given the server IP address, my own login credentials, and su root password (with an admonition that root login is not permitted).

I have a number of questions:

a. how do I determine what software - and what version of that software - is on the VPS (e.g. php, etc...)?

b. how do I set up web hosting accounts on the VPS?

c. once a web hosting account is set up, how do I set up FTP user accounts?

d. how do I set up mysql databases?

e. how do I set up e-mail accounts?

All of this has to be done using SSH only.

Dns (using Direct Admin)

Oct 11, 2009

Well what i can i say that direct admin is really pain in the ass, twice i asked in their forum but it was queued for moderation then not published. i'm having a problem setting up my domain 100% correctly.

let me explain more:

Before 1 or 2 weeks, i re-build the server and installed direct admin, but its really harder than other panels and i couldn't figure it 100% how to do,
my website now is running but i have the following problems

1- domain name can not be solved by all people. when i try to ping it it says its not resolvable, while the domain opens for most of users except for very few which gives an error saying can not connect to server

2- i get this error when using intodns.com
[url]
while everything else is ok

3- some of users in some countries access home/admin/domains/sharedip/... while others access home/admin/domains/mydomain.com/... which is the correct one, this causes problems but i temporary solved the problem by uploading files into both folders

Direct Admin And 64 Bit OS

Feb 20, 2008

I am trying to install Direct Admin on Cent OS 4.5 ( 64 bit ), but i am constantly getting library files error, one after another,

Example -

./directadmin: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

then

./directadmin: error while loading shared libraries: libssl.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

then

./directadmin: error while loading shared libraries: libz.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

goes on .........

But if i install 32 Bit library files (RPM), for them, they vanish and next error comes, with new file missing

I have tried loading 10 RPM's of 32 bit, but i cant go now forever...

Is there anyway to install Direct Admin on 64 Bit Cent OS?

Is there any 1 RPM file, which i can install and then Direct Admin wont give library problems.. ?

LX Admin Hosting

Oct 1, 2008

I am just thinking about getting back into the business since they always say, once your in you can never get out. I am just looking for a little bit of opinions here.

My first question is that I would like to make a shared/reseller hosting site where I can sell LxAdmin Hosting. I beleive that this would be one of the first in the industry, but if you know any sites that specify in LxAdmin Hosting, if you could let me know, i would like to take a check at them. Next, do you think this would have any success. The reason I beleive it would be good is because it would be a cheaper cost for the server, therefore it would be cheaper to purchase on the users end, and they would get more for their money.

Add Domain Via Direct Admin

Nov 7, 2009

When I introduce myself as a newbie, I do not exaggerate. Hope to slowly change that, thought.

I have recently rented a dedicated server from worldstream and have paid for a lifetime usage of Directadmin. My goal is just to host my own site.

Now I am trying to transfer the my domain to this server. From what I can tell, I need to change the DNS for the domain from it's current DNS.

In the Directadmin control panel under "DNS Administration", I see "Add Zone" which I assume is the step to take. Under "Add zone", it asks for

(1) Domain name (what format would I enter this)

(2) IP Address (I was supplied with three IP's when I signed up with worldstream. Do I just pick one of these?)

(3) Name Server 1 (Unsure of what to enter here)

(4) Name Server 2 (Ditto as above)

I realize this is quite basic for most.

Direct Admin With Server

Sep 28, 2008

Just been thinking and currently i host all my services with other hosting companies like my web hosting accounts etc...but was thinking of buying a DA licence and installing it onto one of my linux servers.

On DA's website it says one licence per IP or something along them lines...does this mean if i was to install a licence on say 99.99.99.999 and it was working ok etc but then if i changed my IP range to 99.99.99.998 would that mean the DA licence would no longer be valid?

WHMSonic Shoutcast Admin Pro

Jun 9, 2008

i'm still not too sure how to put all this together,
And im starting to feel stressed out

I think i need a dedicated server with cpanel/whm installed on it
before i can install whmsonic and start selling radio streams with hosting right?

How much is this gonna set me back if i want to create a lot of accounts on one sever,
I am aware that you should only put so many accounts on one server.

I want to be able to offer the extras to the users so if they
are not using their account for live shows they can use the auto
dj features plus they'd have their web space for uploading audio.

And all the good stuff that comes with those features.
An example of what i'd like to offer is on sleepy engineers.

I just don't know if i have to get all this seperate and put it
on a dedicated server mysellf or if there's servers ready with
all this installed and ready to use.

And i don't have a lot of cash to start out
Im thinking 100$ per month to start with.

I like cast control's features, but i've only used whm/cpanel before, for setting up web hosting accounts.

Most reseller packages put me off it's never really my own service.

Mailserver / Admin Required

Aug 1, 2008

I'm having some serious issues.. I moved to a new dedicated server company and found out that the IP block I was on was blacklisted with 5 anti-spam lists.

However, the company is great and they have managed to get the IP block out of every single black list.

However, I am still having issues. My server does not seem to be listed on any blacklists but emails sent out to various places, get bounced back with the following types of errors.

Any suggestions or advice? Any server administrators who think they can fix this? Please PM me with your quote.

CPanel To Direct Admin

May 12, 2007

I don't start a CPanel vs DA war, but need to get a "what might be different" list re a VPS.

When I got my present VPS (moved from shared hosting) I had it initially set up with DA. All my previous experience had been with CP on my shared hosting account, but I had read about CP being a bit of a resource hog.

When I tried to set up my VPS, I got it wrong. I ended up with 2 instances of "mymainsite.com" on the server. I got so confused talking with support and their UNIX lingo, that I had them switch to CPanel.

I'm probably going to move to another host and thinking of using DA to save RAM.

I'm not a reseller of hosting, just have 20+ small to very small sites. I have a number of mySQL databases that get a fair number of queries. I have 1 vBulletin app but the traffic on that site is VERY low.

So what will I need to learn differently in DA?

-cron jobs
-parked domains
-migrating sites
-backing up sites
