Can't Reach My Site - But My Hosting Provider Can

Aug 1, 2008

My internet connection is up and running, I can visit any site except for www.hostingdiscussion.com

After I notified my hosting provider - they said they can see the site just fine. However, how come it would just suddenly go off like that for me?

Please let me know if the site is up for you or not. I am located in Montreal, so if any of you are here using Videotron as your Internet service provider,

Uber Thread On Web Host Reviews

Apr 15, 2008

As you can imagine it is daunting trying to filter out the reviews of various webhosts on this forum. For someone who has not ruled out any webhost for hosting his business website, the time it takes to do appropriate research can be very time consuming.

I was wondering if there was some meta/uber thread that has a bunch of webhosts on it with a general rating for the host, maybe a "percentage approved" scale or something.

Or am I resigned to reading a bunch of threads?

Just wondering if anyone else out there experienced several months of affiliate referrals being flushed out and simply disappearing recently (within the past two months), would be very interested in hearing from others that this may have occurred to.

1 Website, 2 Host Reviews! HawkHost And IGXHost

Oct 23, 2009

Didn't think this would be possible, did you?

So, I switched off of one of my providers for my website about a month and a half ago (I won't mention their name). From my previous host I switched to HawkHost.

HawkHost was amazing throughout our entire month and a half stay. When we first went to them, they converted one of our domains into a subdomain and transferred all of the files for us and did a tremendous amount of extra work they didn't have to do. They were quick at responding and their servers were blazing fast. Unfortunately, they had to pack up our stuff for us and we had to leave due to a DDoS attack. But they didn't kick us out before trying some measures first to help prevent the DDoS attack. During the attack, my website still remained online and a lot of the traffic was being thrown out by the security measures they put in place for me for free. But the attack got through those security measures after 24 hours and took down their servers. Even after we left, the IP was still getting hit and they had to null-route the IP address. We do thank HawkHost for attempting to stop it, and we do not hold any grudges, infact we're very thankful they did what they did for us!

Overall Experience with HawkHost.com:
Support : 10/10
Network Speed : 10/10
Uptime (for the month and a half we were there : 10/10
Willingness to help : 10/10

Now! After HawkHost confirmed the attack has stopped, we set our website at a different host. I hope it doesn't get attacked again, because switching hosts isn't the top item on my Fun things to do this Friday. We switched to IGXHost.com

Our current experience (only been 24 hours):
Great support, we ordered in the middle of the night and they transferred our account within an hour! (It's not a small account either). The staff was very helpful and quick to respond which is amazing because it was 1AM. (HawkHost answered in the middle of the night too). Not really sure about anything else except their support, I will update you guys! But so far IGXHost and HawkHost are about the same quality in support (exceptional!).

Anyways! I'll keep you guys updated.

We here at Data Host Direct would like to thank the staff at IGXHost and HawkHost.

Attn: Hosting Affiliates

I'm thinking about entering the webhosting affiliate game (shared hosting) but I'm not entirely sure what companies I should be focusing on.

I'd like to find out what the general consensus is regarding:

1. who the top 5-10 hosts are for affiliates

2. who has the best payment plans and why

3. who is completely missing the mark and should be avoided at all costs

4. how often should I expect to get paid and are there companies to avoid that don't pay accurately

How To Really Trust A Host Provider

Aug 10, 2007

If you upload your website(s) to any given host provider, what security do you have? None, they are in control of your website, if you're:

1. Late on payments.
2. Publish content they don't like.
3. Exceed your limits in any other way.

They can cut you out, close you down.

The only excellent (!) way, to be in total control, is to host your own website, on a dedicated server, in your own home, with a dedicated line, right or not?

Best Host For A Blog Site- Register With 1&1 And Host With Godaddy

May 27, 2008

with this being my first website goddady's website tonight or there blog site plan seem pretty good as I do not know how to build a professional looking website nor do I have a knowledge of HTML. Are there other hosts that offer better services such as these?

Also I would want to register with 1&1 as to register privately is free but with godaddy it costs around $15 and I've heard of godaddy stealing persons domains when they haven't even expired yet i.e. familyAlbum.com?

Is it allowed for instance to register my domain name with 1&1 and host my site with godaddy?

Host For A Kid's Site

Apr 27, 2008

I'm going to be extremely blunt and start off that although I'm not an unintelligent person, I'm very dumb when it comes to hosting and the lingo. So I would really appreciate the "Hosting for Dummies" version to find a good host

The closest I can show in what I am building with my partner is HERE (which claims to have had 90Million pageviews/month last year) Just basically a teen game and graphic site. It will be mostly flash games, php, various other scripts and forums.

I'm confident in saying they don't use shared hosting at least. Though what it is exactly I don't know. There is no way I'd get a dedicated server to begin with till we need it. I'm not sure what else a site like this requires (perhaps unlimited mySQL?) for a shared hosting plan. I was looking at HostMonster, Hostgator and Bluehost. I need good customer support for sure, I've had too many crap hosts in the past. I also need multiple domains (4-5)

In sum, does the shared hosting even matter at this point, or should I come back when we're in need of dedicated? I'm guessing cp usage will be the first to give out?

How To Host A Site On A Server

Jun 5, 2009

I've a site running at my localhost with Apache/Tomcat server, pages are mostly jsp.

I've used Oracle as the database but i'm currently migrating it to MySQL. I've used the

Struts framework. And i'm planning to add AJAX to it in coming days.

So, the whole thing is up and working on my local machine, how do i host it on a server so that its available in the internet?

Which hosting service is required for this kind of website?

How do i choose a hosting service?

And the most important of all, how to deploy and make the code running in the remote server.

I'm planning to go for a shared server for the moment.

Moved To New Host Yet Sometimes See 'old' Site.

Jun 24, 2009

I recently moved a site from one hosting company to another. I went to the registrar and pointed the DNS at the new nameservers, and set up a new ftp account to upload the site. The DNS seemed to resolve ok after a few hours, (in my browser I was seeing the new host's default home page) so I uploaded the site to the new host.

Today sometimes I see the new site and sometimes the old!

I'll be editing pages and uploading them by ftp, then suddenly I'll see a different directory structure on the remote server. Similarly I'll refresh my browser while looking at the new site and... Hey! I'm seeing the page on the old site!

I've cleared the browser cache on my machine btw.

My guess is that either a server somewhere in the path (at my local service provider?) is throwing out old cached versions of the page, perhaps when it is busy, or that not all the nameserver/dns records have updated.

Can't Access My Web Site, Host Says It's My ISP

Feb 25, 2008

Can't access my web site, my web host says it's my ISP.

My WebHost said "It seems that your ISP cannot resolve the domain".

Can an ISP have any control over the accessibility of individual domains?

That's sounds a little strange to me.

My ISP support is currently closed, but I suspect they'll tell me to contact my web host.

I was able to access it earlier today.

What do you think? Is the ISP theory possible?

Host For Video Site

Aug 20, 2008

I'm a university designer trying to find hosting for a video textbook. I have about 330MB of videos framed in a single swf/html/js page.

Our course is about 300 students, and we'd expect the site to be largely dormant except for traffic spikes right before exams, when everyone will want to access the material.

We know nothing about linux images or server maintenance or anything required to use an unmanaged VPS. I'm mostly just concerned about having enough bandwidth not to upset ToS, but I'm unsure of what this actually translates to. Any hosting advice would be extremely appreciated, from specs we should look for to specific hosts. We're lost fishies!

Picking A Web Host For First Site

Mar 29, 2008

I have plans os doing a NSFW site very soon and am trying to gather as much information about all aspects of what it takes before getting this project off the ground. I know a fair bit of what it will take and I have a web designer set up, ect but I need help picking a web host. I really dont know much about what I am looking for and what I expect the site to do (traffic wise) because it will be my first site. It is going to have videos hosted from other sites but maybe eventually in the future I may host some myself. For the time being, I need to know what do I need in a good host to handle a page that basically just has videos on it. I'm leaning towards Lunar Pages as I have some friends that use them and are satisfied but dont know what I would really need as far as basic hosting, VPS, dedicated servers ect. This part is very new to me! Can anyone give me some advice as to what I should be looking for and and recommendations? I plan on hosting from a hosting company and getting a domain from a domain registrar to keep the seperate.

Host For Iweb Designed Site

I have used the iWeb design as I found it very user friendly, where a lot of the other hosting sites were complicated and you also had to subscribe before you could see what your site looked like. I also like the iweb templates.
