Host My Own Sites - Is It Practical
Sep 22, 2008
I'm thinking of using one of my computers at home as a dedicated server to host my own sites, and I would like to get your opinion guys on whether that would be a practical thing to do or not.
Dedicated Server: I put together;
Intel Pentium Dual Core 2.8GHz
3GB DDR2
1TB Seagate HD
GeForce 9800 GX2 1GB
Gigabit LAN
Windows XP Pro / IIS 5.1
Smart Firewall/Router Symantec
APC Smart-UPS battery (Full 15 hrs.)
Dedicated Connection: Business account will run me $80 CDN/month;
Speed Download - Up to 16 Mbps
Speed Upload - Up to 1 Mbps
Transfer/month - 200 GB
IP Addresses - 2 dynamic & 1 reserved.
The Sites:
Both sites are Academic based - together they receive approx. 200,000 visits a month / 50 to 60 GB transfer and growing. I'm also in process of publishing a 3rd site, but over all, I anticipate the 3 sites transfer to hover around 100GB/mo unless Digg/StumbleUpon/Google all decide to have an orgy-traffic linkage at once and push it higher.

I (and my clients) have a few very small, simple-minded websites...a few php programs for simple forms fetch-and-forward. Is there much PRACTICAL difference between a Windows-based host and a Linux-based host?

We're outgrowing our current bulk storage system and I'd like to solicit opinions.
With 2 TB disks and a 16 disk array, it's possible to have a single 28 TB volume (after deducting RAID5 parity overhead and a hot-spare disk). I've seen arrays from Aberdeen with 48 and 96 disks, for nearly 200 TB. Windows supports up to 256 TB per volume when 64K cluster sizes are used.
Our backup system uses a ton of storage space, and it would be far more convenient, and more efficient from a utilization standpoint, to access that space as a single volume.
Breaking it up into smaller chunks, such as 2 TB each, means we have to make a "best guess" on balancing actual need.
For example, if we assign 25 servers to each 2 TB volume for backup storage purposes, some volumes might only see 800 GB of consumption (remaining 1.2 TB allocated but not used) while other volumes might get 1.6 TB used (remaining 400 GB allocated but not used). Key concept: wasted space, because we have to over-estimate need to assure adequate headroom.
From the opposite viewpoint, if we had a sudden increase in need that exceeded the available space allocated to that volume, we'd have to move that server to a different volume. Key concept: increased admin workload to monitor and re-balance distribution as needed.
Now if we used one giant volume, there would be no guesswork, no "allocating more than we think is needed" for a bunch of small volumes. All servers share one huge common pot.
But there has to be a practical limit from a system-overhead standpoint. Our backup sets consist of a few multi-gigabyte files, so using 64K clusters will not cause much waste from slack space.
I'd like to get your opinions on maximum disk volume sizes from a practical standpoint.

I did a search on the forum bu it exploded so I thought I would post the question - sorry if it's been asked.
I would like to know how many sites are commonly hosted on a dedicated server..
Say - 4 gigs of RAM, and a Q9300 (for example).
I know that some companies put 600 - 800 sites on the server and then customers talk about load and etc etc.. So, I just wanted to get a feel for how many sites/server..

I have a godaddy deluxe Linux hosting plan for the next year. I'm wondering how I can host my two sites on that plan. According to GoDaddy it's possible but how can I do that and have each site separately? It says the only way would be to have it like...Url.com/keyword for other site but I don't want that. I want it to be so you visit one site and it takes you to that exact site.

I'm not going to define a "site" so you define it 4 times and tell me with every one how many sites I can host.
Specs.
256MB
10-15GB
150-250GB
CPanel
Sites: single page to forum... (shared hosting basically)

how to move my web sites from one host to another?
I believe my new host will happily do so.. and, I'd really like to know how to do it myself.
Two of the sites have blogs with lots of posts on them.
If you know of any video tutorials, I'd appreciate it.
I've watched one on backing up the site to "remote ftp server". I do not know what that means and have not been able to find a description/definition.

Say if i choose a plan with specs something like below
Space : 20 GB (Max)
Bandwidth : 200 GB (Min)
RAM : 384 MB
I will be having Plesk (Unlimited), Powerpack, TOMCAT JSP , MS Access & MS SQL Express installed.
Now my question is as approximately how many Domains / end user control panels can i host on the VPS (say most of my client's websites will get a max of 100 visitors per day and they are all not very heavy resource consuming websites. They are websites with around 50 pages and a single MS SQL database which is queried for Login info and other trivial information that is stored in it.)
I know it is very hard to guess, but a conservative figure will do.

I did a site for a UK company that has a .com address, and for various reasons the site is hosted in the US. Unfortunately the site doesn't appear under the google search for pages in the UK.
One reason I chose the US hosting company is that they provide ColdFusion hosting, and my plan is to upgrade the site to use ColdFusion in the near future.
They do also have the .co.uk address registered, which is currently set to forward to the .com address, and that doesn't show up in google at all.
I'm thinking the solutions might be:
1) Move the .com hosting to the UK
2) Get additional hosting for the .co.uk address (uk mirror)
3) Both?
The company is based in the UK, and provides holidays in Montenegro, primarily aiming at the UK market.
When I originally looked into it I could not find a UK host that provided ColdFusion and mySQL 5 - and those that had ColdFusion and other database applicaitons were far more expensive than the US one we're using currently.
What would be the best way forward?

What is the cheapest and easiest way to have say 20 different sites all on different IPs?
Just buy 20 different cheap hosting accounts?
Or can a reseller account or server add different IPs per site? And I mean a pretty big difference in IP not just last number.
All very small sites, about 3mbs space needed, and probably not even a gig of bandwidth a month.

I have to move some large websites from one host to another. The websites contain data about 1 - 3 GB, and my internet connection here is not that fast, so that downloading and uploading would take many hours. Unfortunately I have no SSH-Access to both accounts (old and new one), so I have to make it by FTP.
So I tried to make a tar file and moved it from the old to the new host. I made a tar archive of the whole webfolder (I used php to execute the shell commmands) and moved it by ftp to the new host. But now I´ve got troubles when extracting the archive on the new host: the extracted files are obviously created by the wrong user, so I can´t delete or access them by ftp.
So I´m trying to find other solutions to fix these problems. Maybe someone else had the same problems and could give me advice how to move large sites? Or do you know php-applications that can directly connect one host accout to another via ftp?

Compared to others my sites may not be that big but I have one site that is 5 gigs and another that is about 9 gigs. I was wonder what is the best or most recommend way to transfer these sites to a new host.
I tried downloading the whole site using FireFtp but always seem to get about 3rd of the way done and something messes up the conection. Are there any better tools or methods to do this.
I also have pretty large Dbs that I'll need to transfer as well.

Need the following :
php 5
mysql
cron jobs min time of 5 to 10 mins
php max upload at least 64Mb
also a 6 month hosting plan would be nice
budget between $50 and $60 per 6 months

The last 2-3 days my websites on my vps all started acting funny. Randomly throughout the day they will all just stop loading. If you go to one of my sites they will just load and load and load and eventually time out after 5 minutes.
To fix this problem, all I have to do is reset Apache in my WHM. Everything will be fine for awhile until it decides to stop loading again.
I've been talking to tech support for 2 days. They're out of options. They tried banning some IPs as they thought I might be getting hacked. They tried moving me to a different host machine. They've checked all my logs... there are no errors or problems with the vps. The server load is always very low. Memory is always very low.
I run about 15-20 websites on this VPS. Two of them are vbulletin (v. 3.6.4 and v3.6.8) and all the rest are wordpress).
My VPS is hosted with ServInt.
Server Version: Apache/1.3.39 (Unix) PHP/5.2.4 mod_auth_passthrough/1.8 mod_log_bytes/1.2 mod_bwlimited/1.4
mysql (5.0.45-community-log)
I get these emails all day:
httpd failed @ Wed Jan 9 06:10:42 2008. A restart was attempted automagically.
I am completely out of ideas and options. Can anyone think of something? Think outside the box... make random suggestions. I don't care, I need to try something.
I most recently added 3 or so brand new websites to my vps about a week ago. However, they are just running wordpress so I can't imagine they're the problem.

I have been tasked with setting up IIS6 to run 10 different sites. We will be using the Host Header Names approach as I do not have 10 IP addresses. I want to allow clients to upload/download to their site via FTP. My IIS6 books have examples of how to setup separate FTP sites for individual IP addresses, how do I accomplish this when using Host Headers? I just need to be pointed in the right direction.

I'm having the oddest issue. For some reason, some of the websites on my server load fine, and some take a really long time to load (2 minutes).
Now, the server load is fine, and the size of the sites aren't the issue either. I've restarted Apache and a couple more services, and still the same sites seem to load very slow.
What could be causing this since it's only effecting certain websites?

I'm configuring a website for a client who has moved their web hosting to downtownhost, but is keeping their email hosting with their current provider. They do not want to configure an MX entry on DTH to autoforward email back to their current provider because they don't want their email to pass through DTH.
In order to do this, do I keep the nameserver entries on the current provider the same, and configure an http redirect to point to DTH? Or is there something else I should configure on the current provider?

I'm wondering if you can tell me something about your experience with a host/server in a different country or overseas.
My webpage will be mostly frequented by Australians.
What do you think is the advantage and the disadvantage of having a host in your own country and having one overseas?
I'm thinking about stability, traffic speed, peak hours in different time zones, customer service, ....
What are your experiences?

I was with Blue Host and their support and service was pretty bad. Servers going down all the time, and chat support was terrible. Then I moved to Host Monster and received the same kind of service/support. I later then figured out that Blue Host and Host Monster is runned by the same people. For example, I opened up a tech support ticket with Host Monster and then they replied signing their signature with Blue Host. So I got the same service: terrible tech support and servers kept going down. Now I'm looking for a new web hosting. I a few people here gave Host Gator some good reviews. I hope Host Gator is not run be the same people that runs Blue Host and Host Monster.

with this being my first website goddady's website tonight or there blog site plan seem pretty good as I do not know how to build a professional looking website nor do I have a knowledge of HTML. Are there other hosts that offer better services such as these?
Also I would want to register with 1&1 as to register privately is free but with godaddy it costs around $15 and I've heard of godaddy stealing persons domains when they haven't even expired yet i.e. familyAlbum.com?
Is it allowed for instance to register my domain name with 1&1 and host my site with godaddy?

I have a pretty beefy VPS (1 Gb RAM, equal share Intel xeon Quad core processor), but I have no idea how many other VPS's are sharing that processor.
Is there any way to know that? I'm guessing the hosting company (Future Host - very happy with them btw) isn't going to tell me.
Right now my stats are pretty low, but how many individual cPanel accounts (1 site each) before it starts to bog down? I know it depends largely on the traffic, but is 20-30 low-volume sites a lot for a VPS with 1Gb ram?
