Google UK: Getting .com Sites Listed? Better To Host In The UK?

Jun 8, 2007

I did a site for a UK company that has a .com address, and for various reasons the site is hosted in the US. Unfortunately the site doesn't appear under the google search for pages in the UK.

One reason I chose the US hosting company is that they provide ColdFusion hosting, and my plan is to upgrade the site to use ColdFusion in the near future.

They do also have the .co.uk address registered, which is currently set to forward to the .com address, and that doesn't show up in google at all.

I'm thinking the solutions might be:

1) Move the .com hosting to the UK
2) Get additional hosting for the .co.uk address (uk mirror)
3) Both?

The company is based in the UK, and provides holidays in Montenegro, primarily aiming at the UK market.

When I originally looked into it I could not find a UK host that provided ColdFusion and mySQL 5 - and those that had ColdFusion and other database applicaitons were far more expensive than the US one we're using currently.

What would be the best way forward?

Is Google Sites A Good Place To Start Experimenting For A Newbie?

Mar 22, 2009

Looking to quickly practice with and master my HTML/CSS skills after reading Build Your Own Web Site The Right Way Using HTML & CSS. At the end of the book he mentions site hosting, which I know Google does for free through "Sites".

That said, Sites looks to be designed for the non-web designer, for the average Joe looking to get his own website. So I'm wondering if people who have used it know if it supports an external CSS or if I can upload various image files. I figure that it is probably best that I don't use shortcuts in the initial learning phase.

I don't have a particular site idea in mind, just looking to play around with things and try them out.

Need A UK Web Host That Google Recognises As Such

Apr 15, 2005

Need a UK web host that uses UK IP numbers that Google recognises as such, for my .com domain name.

How to tell?

Pick one of your most popular .com sites on the IP range you give new customers, copy a line of unique text from it, or popular keyword they rank for.

Enter it into Google.co.uk. See where their site comes up. Then tick the 'pages from the UK' option. Is it higher in the SERPs, or gone? Try the same thing with Yahoo.

If higher (i.e. Google thinks the .com (or .net) is hosted in the UK) I also need:

- SSH access
- SSI
- Cpanel
- 10 MySQL databases
- PhpMyAdmin
- Linux/Unix variant
- SpamAssassin
- 8-10 GB bandwith pm
- 500mb disk space.

And how much per month?

Is Google A Good Place To Host?

Aug 27, 2008

I have agreed to rework my boss's storage rental facility website which means I will basically be starting over.

He's always trying to pinch pennies and suggested Google might be a good place to host the site.

From what I can tell, it looks like once you have your domain you pay $10 to host with Google them but it looks like a subdomain setting. For instance, my boss currently has a website called toeholdings.com and he's hosting with google. When I type in the toeholdings.com it redirects to http://partnerpage.google.com/toeholdings.com

If he's trying to get more traffic to this new website, won't that bury him since it appears to be a subdomain? I'm not completely sure what Google is doing here. It looks like beta version.

Does anyone know if their system includes website templates and software to help you build a site?

Have Hawkhost, Who Should Host DNS- Using Google Apps

Nov 9, 2008

I currently got signed up with Hawkhost and I love the interface so far. I bought all my domain names through Name Cheap. I wanted to see what you guys thought would be the best set up...

I would like to use Google Apps to host my email and not hawkhost.

I have two options: I can have hawkhost host my DNS or NameCheap. Do you guys think it would be better to let Namecheap host my DNS and just point the www record to my website?

Just curious what your guys were on letting the webhost host the DNS and if there were any cons with that.

I'm sure hawkhost is reliable, but I just don't like putting all my eggs in one basket and would prefer to have Google host my email...

How Many Sites Do You Host

I would like to know how many sites are commonly hosted on a dedicated server..

Say - 4 gigs of RAM, and a Q9300 (for example).

I know that some companies put 600 - 800 sites on the server and then customers talk about load and etc etc.. So, I just wanted to get a feel for how many sites/server..

One Host For 2 Different Sites

I have a godaddy deluxe Linux hosting plan for the next year. I'm wondering how I can host my two sites on that plan. According to GoDaddy it's possible but how can I do that and have each site separately? It says the only way would be to have it like...Url.com/keyword for other site but I don't want that. I want it to be so you visit one site and it takes you to that exact site.

how to move my web sites from one host to another?

I believe my new host will happily do so.. and, I'd really like to know how to do it myself.

Two of the sites have blogs with lots of posts on them.

If you know of any video tutorials, I'd appreciate it.

I've watched one on backing up the site to "remote ftp server". I do not know what that means and have not been able to find a description/definition.

Host My Own Sites - Is It Practical

Sep 22, 2008

I'm thinking of using one of my computers at home as a dedicated server to host my own sites, and I would like to get your opinion guys on whether that would be a practical thing to do or not.

Dedicated Server: I put together;

Intel Pentium Dual Core 2.8GHz
3GB DDR2
1TB Seagate HD
GeForce 9800 GX2 1GB
Gigabit LAN
Windows XP Pro / IIS 5.1
Smart Firewall/Router Symantec
APC Smart-UPS battery (Full 15 hrs.)

Dedicated Connection: Business account will run me $80 CDN/month;

Speed Download - Up to 16 Mbps
Speed Upload - Up to 1 Mbps
Transfer/month - 200 GB
IP Addresses - 2 dynamic & 1 reserved.

The Sites:

Both sites are Academic based - together they receive approx. 200,000 visits a month / 50 to 60 GB transfer and growing. I'm also in process of publishing a 3rd site, but over all, I anticipate the 3 sites transfer to hover around 100GB/mo unless Digg/StumbleUpon/Google all decide to have an orgy-traffic linkage at once and push it higher.

Approximately How Many Sites Can I Host..

Nov 1, 2007

Say if i choose a plan with specs something like below

Space : 20 GB (Max)
Bandwidth : 200 GB (Min)
RAM : 384 MB

I will be having Plesk (Unlimited), Powerpack, TOMCAT JSP , MS Access & MS SQL Express installed.

Now my question is as approximately how many Domains / end user control panels can i host on the VPS (say most of my client's websites will get a max of 100 visitors per day and they are all not very heavy resource consuming websites. They are websites with around 50 pages and a single MS SQL database which is queried for Login info and other trivial information that is stored in it.)

I know it is very hard to guess, but a conservative figure will do.

Just buy 20 different cheap hosting accounts?

Or can a reseller account or server add different IPs per site? And I mean a pretty big difference in IP not just last number.

All very small sites, about 3mbs space needed, and probably not even a gig of bandwidth a month.

Moving Large Sites From One Host To Another

Oct 4, 2008

I have to move some large websites from one host to another. The websites contain data about 1 - 3 GB, and my internet connection here is not that fast, so that downloading and uploading would take many hours. Unfortunately I have no SSH-Access to both accounts (old and new one), so I have to make it by FTP.

So I tried to make a tar file and moved it from the old to the new host. I made a tar archive of the whole webfolder (I used php to execute the shell commmands) and moved it by ftp to the new host. But now I´ve got troubles when extracting the archive on the new host: the extracted files are obviously created by the wrong user, so I can´t delete or access them by ftp.

So I´m trying to find other solutions to fix these problems. Maybe someone else had the same problems and could give me advice how to move large sites? Or do you know php-applications that can directly connect one host accout to another via ftp?

Httpd Failed - Sites Don't Load - Host Can't Help

Jan 9, 2008

The last 2-3 days my websites on my vps all started acting funny. Randomly throughout the day they will all just stop loading. If you go to one of my sites they will just load and load and load and eventually time out after 5 minutes.

To fix this problem, all I have to do is reset Apache in my WHM. Everything will be fine for awhile until it decides to stop loading again.

I've been talking to tech support for 2 days. They're out of options. They tried banning some IPs as they thought I might be getting hacked. They tried moving me to a different host machine. They've checked all my logs... there are no errors or problems with the vps. The server load is always very low. Memory is always very low.

I run about 15-20 websites on this VPS. Two of them are vbulletin (v. 3.6.4 and v3.6.8) and all the rest are wordpress).

My VPS is hosted with ServInt.

Server Version: Apache/1.3.39 (Unix) PHP/5.2.4 mod_auth_passthrough/1.8 mod_log_bytes/1.2 mod_bwlimited/1.4
mysql (5.0.45-community-log)

I get these emails all day:
httpd failed @ Wed Jan 9 06:10:42 2008. A restart was attempted automagically.

I am completely out of ideas and options. Can anyone think of something? Think outside the box... make random suggestions. I don't care, I need to try something.

I most recently added 3 or so brand new websites to my vps about a week ago. However, they are just running wordpress so I can't imagine they're the problem.

Google Apps (Standard) And Two Different Domains: How Many Google Accounts Do I Need?

Jun 27, 2009

I hope some of you are using Google Apps and can help me to find an answer to the following question:

I own two different and independent domain names (e.g. domain1.com and domain2.com).
I'd like to use the Google Apps (Standard, free edition) with them to create two different and totally independent mailboxes (e.g. abc@domain1.com and xyz@domain2.com).

But how many Google accounts I need to do this? Can I manage two (or more) independent and fully functional domains using one Google account?

P.S.
Help section contains descriptions of aliases for multiple domains, which are just pointers or shortcuts, but not a fully functional mailboxes, so this solution isn't something I'm looking for.

CBL Listed

Dec 1, 2007

4 times already this month we been listed by CBL

i cant for the life of me figure out why!

IP Address XX.XX.XX.XX was found in the CBL.

It was detected at 2007-11-30 16:00 GMT (+/- 30 minutes), approximately 17 hours, 30 minutes ago.

It has been relisted following a previous removal at 2007-11-25 23:59 GMT

I emailed them and it seems i get an autoresponse which makes no sense they reply me the following:

The IP was detected most recently at:

2007:11:20 ~21:00 UTC+/- 15 minutes (approximately 18 hours ago)

sending email in such a way as to strongly indicate that the IP itself
was operating an open http or socks proxy, or a trojan spam package.

In short, this IP is impersonating being a machine we know it _cannot_
be. No properly configured mail server does this under any circumstances.

You will need to examine the machine for a spam trojan or open
proxy. Up-to-date anti-virus tools are essential.

If the IP is a NAT firewall, we strongly recommend configuring the
firewall to prevent machines on your network connecting to the Internet
on port 25, except for machines that are supposed to be mail servers.

Software notes: If you are running Email Architect, set the
"Masqueraded domain" in SMTP service to be the fully qualified
domain name for the machine.

If you are using an Internet Security Systems firewall (eg:
Proventia M10), please contact ISS and obtain new firmware.
They are aware of issues with the CBL. The firmware version
that fixes this bug is, we believe, "3.5" (at least for
the M10).

Useful links:

[url]
[url](see "Securing your System" and "proxies")
[url]

For more information on securing NAT firewalls/gateways, please
see [url]

This entry has already been delisted from the CBL. Unless otherwise
stated, the CBL will relist this IP if the underlying issues are not
resolved, and the CBL detects the same thing again.

has anyone been in this problem before? ive got myself delisted but its just a pain keep waking up each morning to find this happening

is it possible that someoen who is accessing their email through outlook has a virus on their pc?

Where Are Nameservers Listed

Jul 25, 2008

Which file can I find my nameservers listed in?

Godaddy was disallowing me to edit nameservers, so cPanel prevented me from setting up ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com, this has meant now I have a major problem: A client paid me to develop his site and he has now gone on holiday, he wanted it finished today but I can't put it online because he set the nameservers to ns1.domain.com ns2.domain.com whereas I have had to set up the nameservers as one.domain.com and two.domain.com due to godaddy disallowing me to create ns1 and ns2.

Now my question is: Is it possible to edit a config file that can set up NS1 and NS2 to work along side ONE and TWO? I'm using cPanel and I have root access.

Repeated CBL Listed

Dec 7, 2007

They kindly provided me with timestamp as to when detection was happening and they sent me this description:

Timestamp: 2007-12-02 22:55:32
(ive attached the logs from below for around couople of minutes) If anyone knows how to solve this much appreicate it..or if anyone know what could be the issue!

In a nutshell, your IP is forging a well known domain as theEHLO/HELO - imagine connecting to, say aol.com and having your IPHELO as "apple.com". Understandably, when an IP connects to ourservers and presents such an obvious forgery, we're going to consider ita virus emitter or otherwise compromised.] This is what you need to keep in mind when you're trying to resolvesituations like this: 1) Our detections are based on port 25 SMTP connections your IP makesto one or more of our mail servers. The CBL listing _itself_ is theevidence/"proof"/log of the incident. We generally do not keep samples of CBL detections, because thevolumes are so horrendously high (presently more than 700,000detections per day). They never provide any additional information, because the headers, if any, are all fake anyway. In order to preserve the effectiveness of the CBL, informationbeyond what we've already given you will not be revealed. We can sometimes give additional information (eg: more precisetimestamps) if and only if we know it's necessary to find/fixthe problem. 2) The CBL detects suspicious SMTP activity, NOT spamming per-se. Inother words, the CBL detects email being sent in such a way as toindicate that the sender is compromised in some fashion into sendingviruses or spam.

As such, the CBL focuses on identifying how to prevent the behavior infuture, instead of, for example, identifying spammers that need to beterminated. Indeed, in the case of NAT firewalls, it is almost always impossiblefor us to precisely identify which machine behind your NAT is infected. Only your NAT logs (if you keep any and know what to look for) knowwhich machine is infected. In the case of NATs, our focus is on blocking the malicioustraffic getting to the Internet. We can give tips/pointers on howyou can identify specific infected machines behind a NAT, but ourpriority is to prevent _any_ infected machine behind your NATspewing junk to the Internet, because we know that for everyinfected machine you fix, another one (or more) will eventuallyspring up in its place, and we (and we suspect you) don't likeplaying a never-ending game of whack-a-mole. 3) The viruses we detect carry their own SMTP clients with them, and donot attempt to relay through your mail servers. Hence, email transitfilters (either inbound or outbound) on your mail servers can't help.Only AV scanning the infected machine does.

Similarly, the spamware (open proxy or spam trojan) we detect donot route through your mail servers either. 4) Most AV tools aren't very good at detecting/cleaning out establishedinfections. Especially those resulting from day-zero attacks.Particularly since many of these infections open back doors, and theoriginal infection vector downloads many pieces of software that _may_not be in themselves malware, just used in a malicious fashion. 5) The headers don't help at all. Since the virus/spamware has its ownclient, and doesn't pass through your server[s], the only thing knowableabout the virus/spamware is the peer (connection) address at therecipient's mail server - which is what we've listed - your NAT firewallif you have a NAT... Only your NAT firewall logs can tell you anydifferent. Short of AV scanning the infected machine, the only useable informationabout which machine is infected is in your NAT firewall logs - ifyou actually make any logs and keep them long enough. For the most part, then, a CBL listing of an IP means that the IPneeds to be fixed. If it's a NAT IP - port 25 blocking (and youcan find/fix the infected machine[s] at your leisure), if it's nota NAT - virus/malware eradication. 6) Outbound port 25 connection blocking on NAT firewalls (permittingonly your authorized mail servers) is the best solution for NATs. 7) If you have a NAT, once you've implemented port 25 blocking, younot only contain the viruses, your NAT firewall logs will immediatelytell you who is infected or is compromised with a spam trojan oropen proxy. 8) As far as we're aware, once port 25 blocking is instituted in ANAT, the only times people have continued to have trouble with CBLlistings is when the blocking wasn't working for some reason. Itwould be a good idea to test whether the blocking is in fact working. We have suggested procedures for this if you want - ask us.
