Get A New Server Or Upgrade The Current Server

Apr 4, 2007

I have a server with SoftLayer which is based on the Xeon 3060 with 2GB RAM and 2x250GB Hard Drives setup as soft raid using Windows 2003.

I am now looking at two options for an MS Exchange Server 2003 with 25 user licences. I can either get a new dual core AMD server with 2GB and 2x250GB hard drives in soft RAID 1 for about $170-$180 or I could bump the specifications of the current server by adding additional 2GBs (for total of 4GB), another 250GB hard drive with the 3Com RAID controller (for 500GB RAID5 setup) and possibly a quad core CPU upgrade when SL introduces it. The total cost for upgrades would total to $110. I already have a Windows 2003 server license that I can utilize.

How To Make An Image Of A Server And It's Current Configuration

Sep 8, 2008

I have had 2 drives fail on me in 2 weeks, and had to completely redo my server's configuration and security.

I would like to tell my tech to make an image of the current server, just so that the firewall and settings are all saved, and can be restored if this happpens again.

How should I go about doing this, and what can I tell my tech to do so that he does this in the best, most efficient way?

I have 2 live websites on there now (not an insane amountt of traffic), so I am assuming the sites current state will be in the image, which I don't mind, as I can just restore a recent site backup if the site happens to go down again.

Please let me know your thoughts!

( i am assuming i should try to delete as much junk off of the server as possible to make the image smaller)

Upgrade From Shared To Dedicated Server

Oct 12, 2007

This concerns a fairly successful ecommerce website. It is coded in classic asp and has a MS SQL database.

The site sees average of 1500 visitors a day using about 50 GB of bandwidth a month.

The host wants to move the site to a two box dedicated (1 web - 1 database server).

This is an expensive proposition and the client is balking. I am not an expert in these matters but it seems like overkill to me. It seems like most sites don't have problems with the database and web server on 1 box.

How To Upgrade Apache 1.3.37 To 2.2.4 On Cpanel Server

Aug 7, 2007

How To Upgrade Apache 1.3.37 to 2.2.x on Cpanel Server?

Currently, Apache is recommending:

Quote:

Apache 1.3.37 is the current stable release of the Apache 1.3 family. We strongly recommend that users of all earlier versions, including 1.3 family release, upgrade to to the current 2.2 version as soon as possible.

1) Is it safe to upgrade from Apache 1.3.37 to 2.2.4 on a Cpanel machine. I am worried that Cpanel won't like it.

2) Is Php4 still acceptable to use with Apache 2.2?

3) Can someone suggest a tutorial or guide for an upgrade to 2.2?

Server Load Problems - Upgrade

Jun 26, 2007

I have a P4 2.8Ghz 1GB RAM dedicated server that runs one main site. The site runs vBulletin that I've extended to operate cross-site (keeping track of all members and guests) and receives around 10,000-12,000 daily unique visitors, of which the server can currently handle no more than 300-350 users online (based on a 15 minute timeout).

My top stats during CPU spikes (of which are occurring more and more frequently) indicate that the server is hitting the memory ceiling, so I need to make a decision on whether to upgrade the memory to 2GB or to purchase a new server.

Do you believe 2GB will be sufficient to solve my current load problems and maybe make room for a further 100-200 users online, or is this something that would require a better server (of which I have no idea what I would need)?

Upgrade Of Server For Popular Gaming Site

Jun 27, 2008

I currently have

AMD X2 3400
1 GB DDR RAM
3TB Bandwidthwidth

Right now at around 150,000 to maybe over 200,000 pageviews a day thanks to an influx of Korean traffic, the number of Apache connections is making my swf files extremely slow.

I may have to upgrade the 3TB bandwidth too at some point along the line.

Its the raw number of Apache connections that is the problem, my host says. The SQL isn't causing any issues.

What do you guys suggest?

How much with a Opteron server with 2GB RAM help me right now?

Kernel Upgrade On Fedora Core 4 Server

Mar 8, 2008

I have a server running Fedora 4 and WHM/cPanel. I would like to upgrade the linux kernel to the latest version, so mosey in via SSH and type "yum -y upgrade". It downloads a few things and tells me everything is hunky dory.

Now, the version it says it is currently running is: 2.6.17-1.2142_FC4 #1 Tue Jul 11 22:41:14 EDT 2006

Is that the really the newest version available? Maybe I'm confused as to how this works, but if I go to kernel.org it tells me the most recent stable version of the kernel is 2.6.24.3. Is this because I am running FC4?

Load: Upgrade Server Hardware/software Or Set Up Cluster

Apr 9, 2008

We have a quad code with 8GB ram dedicated for one website, but still the load goes through the roof and crashes the server. The site has one vB forum (with minimum hacks), and a custom CMS for the front pages which uses a minimum of queries.

I'm not an expert, but it would seem like mySQL is the one that crashes. When the site crashes and someone browse the site, you can see the "could not connect to mySQL through socket" error message. At that point the load just skyrocket (been up to 4-500), and then the server crashes and has to be rebooted.

* Is our only option to make some sort of cluster?
* Could upgrading to i.eg Apache 2.x or installing an op code cacher like xCache help?
* Is it possible to run the databases from RAM to save IO (so it only writes to the HDD on update/insert/delete etc)?

I have root access, so if you need me to run more commands to look up statistics, just let me know.

To Upgrade Server, Question About Dual-core Servers And Best Config For Mysql

Jun 2, 2008

I'm running a message board and it looks like I've outgrown the low end xeon 3040 1.86GHz dual core server, and the bulk of the CPU load is going to mysqld. I'm debating between offloading the DB to a dedicated server vs upgrading the existing server and hosting the web server and db on the same machine.

Any thoughts on the better approach? fwiw, the load from apache seems next to nothing right now, but I am also planning on adding an SMTP server for user registrations and general support email.

I'm also not super familiar with dual-core and dual processor machines. Does shifting mysql to a dual core or dual proc machine help (vs a single core/single proc machine)? since there is just one mysql daemon, does having a second core or proc. buy me anything?

Server 2008 "Upgrade" With Perc 3

Jul 12, 2008

Purchased a dell PE2650 which has a perc 3/di controller for raid, server 2003 installs fine (downloaded a 60 day trial of standard/enterprise)

The problem is server 2008, when I insert the cd it just hangs (via boot) it loads within server 2003 (but due to the demo being enterprise/standard edition and 08 being web edition I cannot "upgrade" 03-->08)

I have upgraded the bios and all the controllers and it is still the same, I have even used the dell pre-OS installtion disk for the PE2650 and 08 but the screen remains the same, just the background image (grey) with no text and no movement.

Since 03 loads fine I assume it is due to a lak of driver support, (and within windows it mentions perc problems to load suitible drivers)

At the moment, I have switched to scsi drives, loading 03 on one disk and will try to load 08 (within windows) onto the second hdd and try to use drivers located on the disk.

Has anyone managed to load 08 web edition on a PE2650/other perc 3 device?

Since Sunday the CPU has been really high. Sunday was the worst though as my site was unavailable by some members and slow by others. I did open a support ticket and was told some one was doing a back up and after it was done things would go back to normal.
Well Monday though today the site was fine and running fast again but the cpu is still pretty high.

Current Host Has Become Too Expensive

Mar 13, 2008

I've currently got a friend hosting me but I'm paying £5 ($10) per month ($120 per year) which is quite expensive for what I need.

I currently have two accounts- one personal FTP / Email and one shop where I'm selling CDs. So I need FTP / Email / and MySQL.

I'm winding down the CD store so I rarely get sales now, and I don't require much storage (couple of GB) or very much transfer at all.

Can anyone recommend a good host to me? I'm just looking for something reliable, the less expensive the better (Even free, if that's possible.)

I've been looking at Amazon's web services. Does anyone know if they're suitable for what I want? Their rates seem excellent.
