Foundry BigIron 8000, CPU Overloading And BGP Flapping
Jul 31, 2007
I know there's been discussion regarding Foundry BigIron's and their capabilities of running L3 and L2 at the same time.
I have a friend who is running a BigIron 8000 and only pushing just over 100Megabits on it, however once every few hours he experiences a BGP flap and one of the CPU's maxes out. He is running both Layer 3 and Layer 2 on it.
When the issue occur's, new connections do not open, but currently opened connections continue to operate.
Is there a specific packet type that is causing this to happen? Does anyone have any insight? It is running the latest firmware.

We are having some problems with a Foundry Bigiron 4000.
The hardware config is as following:
- Bigiron 4000 chassis
- 2x B8GMR3-A management (active + standby)
- 2x B24E
Once every couple of days now, we get the following error in syslog:
Code:
2009-10-05 20:40:00User.Warning8x.xx.50.1Oct 5 20:39:59 gateway IP: IP: Duplicate IP address 8x.xx.38.1 detected sent from MAC address 0004.d3ea.e200 interface 3/13, 1 packets, first packet received at time 1 days 20 hours 41 minutes 37 seconds since bootup!............

I recently installed a foundry bigiron 4000 with a B8MGR3 running version: 07.1.18T53
When ever I tracert outbound using a unix box, it gives me a ICMP checksum is wrong error. Before I had this switch installed, i never had this issue! Could it be this version i am running?? And this ICMP error happens on all of my unix boxes.

Does anyone have any experience with these two models of Remote Access and VoIP servers?
Does anyone have any exact specifications on there models? I know they support BGP routing using their ethernet ports, but can they hold the full routes?
A hardware provider said the following about the ethernet card:
The Ether3ND card has a spec of 100,000 - 64 byte packets per second for a single port. It has four ports however the card is limited to 115,000 similar packets per second. Multiple providers should not be an issue. The included doc should answer the routing questions. The DS3 card does support M13 – possibly C-bit also. DRAM can be added via the size of the card installed.
Is 115,000 packets per second a decent amount?

I am not sure exactly which model is in my server, but I know it is in the 3ware 8xxx line.
What is my best option to be alerted to a drive failure. I am running a Raid 1 setup.
I went to 3ware's sight, and wasn't sure exactly which software to download/install.
I am on Centos 5.2 32bit and have Cpanel/WHM installed.

I'm looking for a solution that I can place a firewall between 2 vlans on
a BigIron router with L3 enabled.
For this moment there is one big vlan2 with a ip-route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0
123.123.123.123 and a router-interface ve2 with the IP of the router, the
address I use as gateway on the machines behind it.
The WAN port has the IP address to communicate with to the GW of the
carrier-router (123.123.123.122)
Because I want to let the BigIron the routing I was thinking of 2 vlans,
one for the lan-vlan and one for the wan-vlan, but this will be a problem
because I only have one IP-block what I can use.
So the sitiuation must be as follow on the BigIron:
WAN => vlan2 => firewall => vlan3(lan)
Because of the fact that the firewall will be transparent, this should be
no problem to place it between the vlans. The actual problem is how to
manage this. In simple words, I should be able to replace the firewall
with a cross-cable and it should still work.
Cisco for an example has a SVI solution for this, but I can't find such
thing for a Foundry router.

I'd setup a Foundry 2402CF at home with a terminal port connection. When I got it to the data center I could not connect to the terminal port using the same connection settings I used at home.
Thought it might be the cable, so tested it with an FWS2, which worked fine.
Could the port have gone bad on the trip to the DC, or is there some security setting I'm missing?

I've exausted my self attempting to load on a boot image to the management blade for a project that i'm doing with a few friends.
I just bought this Foundary *off ebay of course* and who ever had it last removed the image! I mean I cant even get into the primary or secondary. I tried booting from tftp, but everytime that happens, the switch just restarts and then doesnt boot up again. This is what i'm getting.
Code:
BOOT INFO: RESET ANY
master arbitrate : become primary arbitrator.
BOOT INFO: Become active CPU module
M2 BI Boot Code Version 06.05.00
Enter 'b' to go to boot monitor ...
BOOT INFO: load from primary copy
BOOT ERR: bad code image header
BOOT INFO: load from secondary copy
BOOT ERR: bad code image header
BOOT INFO: try to boot from bootp server
bootp timed out, bootp-tftp process aborted!
BOOT ERR: bootp failed
I currently have the B2R07601b.BIN image, just I dont know how to load the file onto the blade via tftp or any other method.

We're evaluating options on new switch deployments and wish for advise or opinions. We have experience with 2950's but want to move up into all gigabit devices. They will be used for pure L2 purposes as front-end access switches for server racks.
For our needs (24 port, all ethernet, L2 only) it looks like these two competing models fit our requirements and budget:
Cisco Catalyst 2960G (about $2150):
Switching: 32Gbps
Forwarding: 35.7Mpps
Foundry FLS624 (about $2400):
Switching: 108Gbps
Forwarding: 161Mpps
It's a tough decision because we have no experience with Foundry products, but from the spec sheets the price vs. performance ratio seems amazing (almost too good to be true).
You have to wonder if they get their ratings only under one specific situation in which you never encounter in "real world" use.
For those of you using Foundry what models are you using for your access switches to your web severs? Is there a better model for our application? What's your overall opinion of the products and service? Would you invest your entire network to them?
We have a mix of various vendors right now for switching / routing (Juniper, Cisco and Riverstone), but looking to the future being more vendor centric to either Cisco or Foundry for switching will be the model (using Juniper for routing). We've also considered other vendors such as HP, Extreme, etc, but ruled these out for a variety of reasons.

There are two vbulletin forums hosted on my colocated, Q6600 Quad Core, 4GB RAM server and this process [php] <defunct> keeps spawning constantly and hogging the CPU resources.
Each process lasts a matter of seconds and dies but it keeps spawning itself constantly. Heres a screenshot:

Ive tried restarting Apache but it doesn't solve it.

My server has been running slow for a while now but I was out of twon so I was not able to check on it. I just got back and find that the server load is above 4.50 for a dual cpu server with 2GB ram. I have looked and all I can see is that there are a few sites using a good amount of resources. However, on my other server, I have sites that are even more busy then the ones on the server that is overloading. I cannot seem to find what is going on or what to do about it. Please help me. The sites are moving at a snails pace.

My host has suspended saying my server was overloaded and sent me a log to my mail and i don't have access to cpanel also. I just have a wordpress blog and when i had contacted host through chat they told some ip might be causing this issue so ban that ip when ur account is unsuspended.
But i am really unaware of how to find which ip is causing this issue as i have little knowledge on analysing logs. Any help regarding this is highly appreciated and please leave your suggestions for me.
I am pasting the logs that were sent by host to me in mail:
