Finding Which Disk Device Is A File Is On

May 18, 2008

programatic/scriptable way to find out which disk a file is on. For example, if I look at the output of: stat /root/.bashrc I see:

File: `/root/.bashrc'
Size: 1298 Blocks: 16 IO Block: 4096 regular file
Device: fd00h/64768d Inode: 13991942 Links: 1
Access: (0644/-rw-r--r--) Uid: ( 0/ root) Gid: ( 0/ root)
Access: 2008-05-18 09:19:14.000000000 -0400
Modify: 2007-12-18 09:19:54.000000000 -0500
Change: 2007-12-18 09:19:54.000000000 -0500

So I can see this is on device 64768, but how do I get from there to knowing that 64768 is really /dev/sda1, where in this example, I know the file actually is?

Overall, I want to resolve from the filename which device in the output of iostat contains that file - I don't necessarily have to go through stat, but it looks like a promising starting point.

What File System For A Massive Disk Array

Jun 2, 2009

I am trying to figure out what file system to use for my server. It has 24 hard drives, 2 run the OS in RAID 1, and the other 22 are in RAID 10. When I was installing the OS (Ubuntu 8), I kept on getting problems when I tried to partition and format the second drive (the one with the 22 disks in RAID 10) and it keeps failing on me. I then changed the file system type from ext3 to XFS and it worked fine. I also gave it another try and did not partition/format the second drive and decided to do it manually once the OS was installed. When I did it it told me that the file system was too large for ext3. So my guess is that ext3 has a limit on the size of the file system it is being installed on.

Anyway, so I am wondering, is there any other file system that will get me the best performance, mainly I/O performance, that I can install? I would like to stick with Ubuntu OS. This server will mainly serve large files for download over HTTP.

Plesk 11.x / Linux :: PhpMyAdmin Gives 500 Error Or Saves File To Disk At Login

May 27, 2014

I am runing ubuntu server 64bit with plesk v.11.5.30, phpmyadmin v.4:3.4.10.1-1.

When i try to acces phpmyadmin from : myserverIP/phpmyadmin - it gives me 500 error.

When I try to acces phpmyadmin from: mydomainserver/phpmyadmin - it saves file at login into the disk instead login. I was going through different threads on the web to solve that problem but no success at all.

I have real basic knowledge about webservers, phpmyadmin and mysql server. I am runing my first cloud server just few days.

There is no possibility to access preconfigured phpmyadmin from plesk according that thread: link So what for do I need plesk?

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: CentOS 7 - Hard Disk Quota Is Not Supported Due To Configuration Of Server File System

Feb 25, 2015

I have a new CentOS 7, with Plesk 12, CentOS 7 by default has XFS filesystem.

I try migrate sites from another Plesk Server but Plesk agent say: "hard disk quota is not supported due to configuration of server file system" (my CentOS 7)

My CentOS7:

CentOS Linux 7.0.1406 64 bits
Plesk 12.0.36

My fstab

[root@ns ~]$ cat /etc/fstab
/dev/mapper/centos-root / xfs defaults,usrquota,grpquota 1 1
UUID=ba391bd5-786c-4ae7-8bbd-f36f831ae6eb /boot xfs defaults 1 2
/dev/mapper/centos-swap swap swap defaults 0 0

I added "usrquota,grpquota", then mount -o remount / ; but when I try quotacheck -fmv / I gest this:

[root@ns ~]$ quotacheck -fmv /
quotacheck: Skipping /dev/mapper/centos-root [/]
quotacheck: Cannot find filesystem to check or filesystem not mounted with quota option.

but quotaon command works:

[root@ns ~]$ quotaon /
quotaon: Enforcing group quota already on /dev/mapper/centos-root
quotaon: Enforcing user quota already on /dev/mapper/centos-root

The problem here is why Plesk does not recognize quotas as enabled on CentOS 7??

If I try this command it seems good:

[root@ns ~]$ /usr/local/psa/admin/sbin/usermng --isquotable
0

Also I do this:

- Disabled Selinux
- Check all packages as quota, etc.

I have been using some reference: [URL] ....

SSL On Client(WIN Mobile Device)

I have SSL enabled site on IIS.I want to access it from my PocketPC(Win mobile). But when I try access it, I have been prompted to install a certificate.

Unlike when I try to any HTTPS site (Banking sites) I have never been prompted to install any certificate.

Why am I being prompted with security message with "Yes,No,View certificate" options on it every time I try to access my own server(desktop) via my WIN mobile using active sync.
Unlike When I try to access banking site(https) I was never ever prompted a mesage like above.

How to have same functionality for my application also?

NTBackup To LTO-4 Tape Device

Jul 24, 2008

I have a Dell LTO-4 tape device, its not an autoloader, just a single drive.

When backing up using NTBackup, the backup to the first tape is sucessful, however, the backup wont fit on one tape, so it prompts me to tell me the media is full.

I insert new media, but NTBackup doesn't notice its there, so i go to Removable storage, click libaries, right click the tape drive, and click inventory.

This makes NTBackup detect the tape, and asks me if i want to use it. I click yes, but then i get an error message come up saying it was unable to mount the media, invalid command, and the following gets logged to the report:

Code:
Cannot locate the specified media or backup device. This backup operation will terminate.

----------------------

Cannot locate the specified media or backup device. This backup operation will terminate.

----------------------

Cannot locate the specified media or backup device. This backup operation will terminate.

----------------------

I have read many microsoft articles that explain tape drives having problem with automated backups because the user inserts a new tape, but ntbackup isn't aware of it. But that seems to be related only to scheduled unattended backups.

In this case its when the first tape is full and it prompts me for the second tape.

SSL - Mobile Device Access Lock Down

Jan 29, 2007

We have a customer requirement to enable Direct Push email on our Outlook Web Access servers to a number of mobile devices the customer will be supplied from Vodafone - running Windows Mobile 5

Therefore we need to create a public HTTPS address to allow access to the OWA/OMA part.

We do NOT (at this stage) want to allow general access to OWA over HTTPS (we have an eGap solution with RSA for this) so we need to be able to lock down access to the OWA server only to specific devices. One way would be to use Firewall Rules at the Outer DMZ and lock down by the IP ranges of the phone but thats prohibitive to other devices and will fail when the phones change IP (i.e. international roaming)

Therefore Im wondering if we can use self signed SSL certs where there is no trusted CA provider (if there was all browsers would simply be prompted to trust the source and then get access). If we use our own self signed certs and have them installed on the client devices would this work? What would be the downsides (i.e. less cryptogrpahy without the CA part?)

Hardware: Db Servers, Web Servers, File Servers. Cpu, Ram, Disk

Jan 20, 2007

I have a lot of questions here so if you can't answer them all I understand. even pointing me somewhere where I could get the answers would be appreciated; hardware sites focusing on server hardware, forums focusing on such, etc.

we plan to have three different types of servers:

- db server (self explanatory. mysql. for forums, mysql driven sites.)

- file server (lots of files around ~2-10MB, consistant 70mbps right now, but we want more room for upgrades. needs a LOT of storage room.)

- web server (lots of php files, but also static things like plain html, images, etc. also includes all misc services for the setup-- dns, etc.)

could I be given a rundown for which hardware each of the three should have? I don't need specifics, even just knowing that more ram is important here while cpu doesn't matter as much, or that the fastest disks available are a must, etc would all be valuable info for me. despite that, I certainly wouldn't mind specific hypothetical hardware configs.

for the database server I'm assuming the more ram the better. not entirely sure about the cpu? also not positive on disks...

for the fileserver, how much ram would be practical or useful? disk io will be an issue I'm because plenty of people will be pulling files at once so the disk needs to read from multiple places. scsi (and even raptors) are not an option as we need 750GB+ of space on a reasonable budget. more ram will take some load of of the disks, but how much is neccessary / reasonable?

for the web server I'm assuming cpu first, then ram, but it'll likely need less ram than the db server?

I'm more lost on the disks than anything. scsi on the fileserver is not an option under any circumstances due to $/GB. for the db & web server I'm willing to pay for scsi if the performance increase really does warrant the extra money, but I'd like to be convinced before shelling it out. if you have benchmarks geared at server hardware when it comes to disks I'd really appreciate it.

also, what's the best way to network these together when colocated? each one with a dual gigabit ethernet port and then the communications go to and from the router?

Plug&play Switch Appearing As One Device

Jun 11, 2008

what network device would suit our needs (and whether there is something like what we need).

The device should meet following criteria:

-it should appear as one device only: a L2 switch is not an option as the device has to announce only one MAC address on the uplink port

-plug&play: a gigabit L3 switch is not an option because we would have to change the default gateway of the already configured servers to the L3 switch's IP

-gigabit ports

Is there any reliable device that could be used for this purpose?

Apache :: Playing Video On IOS8 Device / HTPasswd?

Dec 5, 2014

I run some tests with an Apache 2.4.10 running on W2k3 Server to see if Videos are playing well. The site is protected with .htacess/.htpasswd for now. I use jwplayer as player. The videos run fine on FF and IE, but as soon as I want to play them on an IOS 8 device (Iphone, Ipad), it doesn't work anymore. The message I get is "File cannot be played". The odd part is - when I remove .htaccess/.htpasswd, it works immediately. IOS devices, or is there something specific to be set to make this work? I logged in to the site with user and password, which always worked flawlessly. I assume it's not an Apache problem, since it runs fine on FF, but maybe someone here is aware of such a bug or something.
