Fast Server Turn Up + Colocation, Private Network, And Outside The Midwest

Sep 17, 2008

Is there a good dedicated server company that has fast guaranteed turn ups, allows colocation, a private network, and is outside the midwest?

I want to colo my database server(s), firewalls, and switches but then use dedicated servers as web servers. Hopefully allowing me to add web servers very quickly as needed (someone getting /.'d). I would want the webservers on a private network only.

Does anyone offer any type of service like this?

Reasonably Priced Colocation Provider With Similar Private Network As Soft Layer's

Jun 9, 2008

Is there a colo provider that has a free private network for use between their locations, similar to what SL has for their dedicated servers between facilities? They have 10GigE between their locations, with free unlimited usage.

We have around 40 servers now, and colo would really make sense, but we are doing multicasting stuff so we really need a backend network to support our services, as well as many locations for better delivery quality.

VPN (Virtual Private Network) Server Setup

Jul 9, 2008

I'm trying to setup a VPN server on windows 2003 standard. It suppose to work like this if configuration is correct: the server will have 20 static public IP addresses, each of my workstations will use one of the 20 IPs to connect to the server, then connect to the internet with the same IP it connects to the server. So if I do a IP lookup, each workstation will show a different public IP but the server will always assign the same IP to the same workstation.

Now all my workstations can connect to the server with any of the IPs I have, and they can surf the internet with no problems at all. However, if I do a IP lookup, every workstation shows the same pubilc IP which is totally not what I wanted. I have searched google and not much useful infor come up. Can any of the experts here help me out?

Host With Fast Network

Sep 19, 2008

fairly strong dedicated server probably minimum of a single processor dual core, preferably a quad-core and around 2GB+ RAM. I don't mind a metered bandwidth plan and I don't have a preference on how much bandwidth is provided but I need a fairly solid and fast network. I looked into midphase and I their plans look attractive but I've heard bad reviews on them on it being unreliable, unreliable support, and a slow network. I also recently used zenex5ive and I wasn't too happy with their network either. I've looked at a bunch of providers but I can't figure out which ones would suit me best. Anybody have any suggestions that you think would match my criteria? I mostly need the specs above and a fairly fast network with good pricing...

VPN (Virtual Private Network) Tunnels Away From Sweden. Where To?

Jul 15, 2008

The Swedish parliament just passed a law mandating all information passing the Swedish borders to be copied to the government (no kidding). We wish to offer people VPN tunnels out of the country to protect their communication and therefore need:

* A location with good connectivity with Sweden (like somewhere in Europe)
* A location where traffic is not normally routed through Sweden (such as Finland)
* Lots of bandwidth
* Many IP addresses
* No storage space
* Linux

Where to turn for something like that?

Private Network IP Block In The Data Center

Jun 19, 2009

Is their any threat or possible problems in using a common private subnet in the data center which will be used for internal communications (Backup Network, etc.) connected to a private internal network.

Example if we use a block such as 10.10.10.x/24 or 192.168.0.x/24 which has a high possibility of being used on many clients LAN's or should we use something totally obscure such as 10.12.15.x/24 or is this not even an issue and simply using anything which is labeled for private use in the RFC's fine?

Any UK Or European Host Accepting VPN (Virtual Private Network)?

May 28, 2007

I'm looking for a host located in UK that can accept/support vpn/tunnel connections to the VPS - creation and access to vps' /dev/net/tun (TAP/TUN device) for use with tunneling services like vtun.

I am currently a customer of webhosting.uk.com, they look very good host but unfortunately they dont accept or support vpn on their VPS plans.

The bigger the list of hosts supporting vpn, the best.

Maybe hosts of other european countries too, if connection speed is acceptable.

Datacenters In The Midwest.

Oct 25, 2007

I'm sure your facility is great. However, we're from California. You're from Idaho or some similar place. That means you're supposed to be cheaper than our current solution by default. Unless you're in Chicago, then you're going to be very bandwidth and talent poor compared to us, so cheap real estate is the only thing you have going for you. Maybe you just shouldn't pitch Californian companies, because all we can do is point and laugh.

P.S. Terrorists don't attack infrastructure, so stop telling me that your farmland datacenter is a great site because terrorists will never attack it. Terrorists will also never attack any of my other datacenters.

Static Routes With Linux & Shorewall (site To Site VPN Virtual Private Network)

Would You Turn Off Dedicated Server Without Notice

Oct 5, 2008

I am in the process of fighting a Hosting company on a dedicated server. It was turned off without notice a couple of months ago. They said I had not paid last years bill for this server (10 months ago). When I sent them the paypal confirmation number from last year finally they agreeed but said I owed an inflated 2008-2009 bill. The first bill I got was when the server was suspended. The bill increased over 20%. In order to get my clients back online I paid the increased bill but sent the initial price guarantee and asked for a refund of the difference. What I got was a half apology and the double talk below. I switched hosting companies and asked for a pro-rated refund and even though the server is paid up until Sept 2009 they have suspended the server. I am going to leave the hosting companies name out.

"Dear Mark,

As explained by Tom, the amount you paid is the amount that was due.

Since you originally purchased your server, our costs have risen by approximately 46%. The increase in price for your server only represents approximately 16%. While in the past, we have been able to absorb price increases and not pass them along, unfortunately, on this occasion we had no choice but to pass along part of the increase - the increase applied is just over half the increase we have personally seen since the start of this year. We have been able to keep the increase low through additional cost savings and reducing our profit margins, but, there is a limit to that and we unfortunately hit with the latest increase we've been hit with.

The issue with your server earlier this month was due to human error. We do not have any due invoices from 2007 (any unpaid would have been passed to collections), and as we are human, have gotten into the habit of simply looking at the day and month. One of my billing staff members alerted me that your invoice was overdue, believing it was a 2008 invoice due 1st August 2008 and requested that I authorise a disconnection. I then looked at it and also missed the 2007 date. Tom unfortunately does not have full access to billing details and cannot correct (nor view) errors such as that.

In terms of the invoicing - the system expected a recurring payment, through the Paypal subscription, to occur automatically and this is why no invoice was generated. As your invoice last year was manually paid, there was no subscription to update and pay. As a result, I had to manually update your account to reflect the payment details and manually generate the invoice. The invoice in your account when you paid the invoice correctly reflected the $1274.20 value. One of the emails quoted above, which should have been received after the emailed invoice, stated "generated the correct invoice for the 2008 to 2009 billing period.". I am sorry if that wasn't clear enough.
