Fail To Connect To Mailservers

I have this server with no control panel and dnsreport could not connect to mailservers on all my domains. But the server can send out emails because I'm receiving logwatch emails, etc. I'm also using dnsmadeeasy for my nameservers.

Quote:

ERROR: I could not complete a connection to any of your mailservers!

mail.mydomain.com: Timed out [Last data sent: [Did not connect]]

If this is a timeout problem, note that the DNS report only waits about 40 seconds for responses, so your mail *may* work fine in this case but you will need to use testing tools specifically designed for such situations to be certain.

I tried adding the domains on /etc/mail/local-host-names and restart sendmail but the error is still there.

Mailservers
My current dedicated server's main IP address ends in 88 and the server hostname is my.hostname.com

The IP address for one of my sites, mydomain.com, ends in 89

When I send emails from the mydomain.com account the email headers show that it was received from my.hostname.com (xxx.x.xx.88)

I conducted a test at dnsstuff.com and got the following message

-----------------------
WARNING: One or more of your mailservers is claiming to be a host other than what it really is mail.mydomain.com claims to be host my.hostname.com [but that host is at xxx.x.xxx.88, not xxx.x.xxx.89].
-----------------------

I am worried that this situation may lead to my email getting blocked by
anti-spam software.

Technical support tells me that as long as the reverse DNS resolves to the name being reported by the mail server, I should not have an issue.

However I would prefer to be able to send email to a remote server from the IP address of each of my domain names instead of the server's main IP.

WARNING: One Or More Of Your Mailservers Is Claiming To Be A Host
I just got a dedicated server on dedicatednow.com a couple weeks ago and I running my own mailing list from the server.

I have come accross a couple problems already and have been black listed but I know exactly why it is and am working on resolving the issue.

Now... When I check dnsstuff.com for information on my dns...

I get this error in one of the fields:

-------------------------------
WARNING: One or more of your mailservers is claiming to be a host other than what it really is (the SMTP greeting should be a 3-digit code, followed by a space or a dash, then the host name). If your mailserver sends out E-mail using this domain in its EHLO or HELO, your E-mail might get blocked by anti-spam software. This is also a technical violation of RFC821 4.3 (and RFC2821 4.3.1). Note that the hostname given in the SMTP greeting should have an A record pointing back to the same server. Note that this one test may use a cached DNS record.

domain.com claims to be host host.differentdomain.com [but that host is at 555.555.55.10 (may be cached), not 555.555.55.11]. <br />
-----------------------------------

It seems like my main hostname is mailing from only one ip address and not the dedicated ip that I've assigned to the domain i'm mailing from.

So i'm wondering if there is a way for me to add an additional hostname that I can use specifically for one domain and ip address that will send mail from that domain only.

While in addition, still using the regular hostname for my shared accounts that will send mail under its own ip all on the same server?

DNS Email :: WARNING: One Or More Of Your Mailservers Is Claiming To Be A Host Other
I am setting up some website accounts on a new dedicated Linux/cPanel server that has 1 main (or shared IP) and 5 dedicated IP's. From what I understand.. all emails from any domain on the server will be routed through the Main IP of the server, even if the domain that is sending the mail is on one of the dedicated IP's.

I am trying to ensure that my DNS and mail configuration is setup in the most pristine manner possible, to ensure I have the highest email deliverability success as humanly possible (disregarding spf, domainkeys, etc.).

The most important website on this server is abcd.com. And I placed the abcd.com account on one of the dedicated IP addresses. So basically...

The Main (or Shared) IP of the server is 1.1.1.1

abcd.com is on the dedicated IP of 1.1.1.2

Looking at my zone record for abcd.com, I have the following (My host handles DNS so this is what my control panel reads):

Code:
@ A 1.1.1.2
mail A 1.1.1.2
ftp CNAME abcd.com.
www CNAME abcd.com.
@ MX mail.abcd.com.

This all seems pretty standard, but the problem I am seeing is that when I run a DNSreport on abcd.com, I am getting the following warning:

WARNING: One or more of your mailservers is claiming to be a host other than what it really is (the SMTP greeting should be a 3-digit code, followed by a space or a dash, then the host name). If your mailserver sends out E-mail using this domain in its EHLO or HELO, your E-mail might get blocked by anti-spam software.

mail.abcd.com claims to be host host.xyz.com [but that host is at 1.1.1.1, not 1.1.1.2].

How would I go about getting rid of this problem so it doesn't affect my email deliverability. It seems that any website I put on a dedicated IP is going to have this problem. So I am looking for any guidance or suggestions anyone may have on how to remedy this situation.

Speakeasy = Fail
So speakeasy decided to jump on the dedicated server business, and I tried them. My recommendation: Do not sign up for a dedicated server with them - that is unless you want to wait more than a month on your server (took them 35 days) in which they will lie to you and make up excuses for why they take so long. Then once they set up your server, expect it to get piss poor bandwidth and not function properly. The customer service takes 72+ hours to respond 10% of the time. The other 90% they don't respond at all. My sales rep apologized more than 15 times to me in the 35 day period I waited on my server claiming they are "new to the managed services business." This was more than obvious - I basically handed them $600 and got a worthless piece of junk which sat idle for 30 days in return.

DNS Fail-Over
way to get a complete DNS Fail-Over solution for my website.

Currently I'm hosted at one Hosting Facility in NY, and I'm thinking on getting a backup location either in TX or CA but my biggest problem is visitors as even If I will get the secondary location and set the TTL to 10-20min some ISPs are caching the ip address for 24hrs, so even If I will change the IPs from the old range to the new, some ISP's around the world will still cache the old IP and the visitors will get nowhere in case the main location has an issue.

And I was wondering if there’s a way to send people to one direct IP let’s say 1.2.3.4 and from there to load the pages / db or mask there connection under the domain name to a different location without them noticing it so the SSL certificate wont produce error messages.

As I'm sure that Yahoo, CNN and other major websites don’t use one web server for accept connections all over the world to their websites.

Liquidweb - Migraiton FAIL
I am only writing this post here because I used webhosting talk to research my recent purchase of a dedicated server with liquidweb.

I have been a happy liquidweb VPS customer for the last year and have grown my business with them. Last week I decided to upgrade from a VPS to a dedicated server and that is where things went wrong.

Stefan in sales was nice in taking my order and had my new server setup in very little time. I got an email that everything had been migrated and they would do the cut over Friday morning.

Friday morning I awoke to phone calls from my clients saying they were not getting emails, their site was down, etc.

I do some initial research and find out that liquidweb sold me a new dedicated server with old used dirty ip addressees that were blocked by ATT / sbcglobal / pacbell. To compound this problem a week later and three ip changes all of which were blocked I am still being blocked and on their blacklist. See below for list of other problems.

I was transferred to Bret my account manager who has done nothing for me and hung up on me through web today while pleading with him to get someone to help me.

I can only talk to a support supervisor and no one will let me talk to a real manager. I went on vacation to Boston this week and have been dealing with these issues the entire time.

I feel like I have been pawned off and shuffled around from person to person and can not get my issues resolved.

And to throw salt on the wound they billed $209 for a $159 server and then charged me a seperate $10 for 2 days from last month. Stefan assured me this transfer would be done at the end of the month so there would be no additional charges. Another lie.

Below is the short list of all the issues I have had with liquid web over that last since my migration.

Mysql databases were copied over

Email forwarders were not copied over

Email was being blocked by ATT/SBC/Pacbell

SPF records were not copied over

A records were not copied over

They sold me a new server with old drity blacklisted ip addresses.

After three sets of ip addresses I am still being blocked.

I was billed for both my old VPS and my new server when stefan the sales agent told me it would be a seamless migration and I would be billed for the server starting next month.

Can never talk to the same person twice. Have talked to about 20 people total over the talk week no one will take responsibility to get my issues resolved.

Can anyone recommend a fully managed dedicated server that will handle my migration with care and take responsibility when issues arise.

CentOS Yum Fail
cpanel tech staff say my server

in a broken state halfway upgraded from centos 4 to centos 5. You'll need to either complete the update to centos 5 or revert to centos 4. Easyapache and some other cPanel functions require that yum be working, but "yum update" on your server currently fails due to the mix of centos 4 and 5 rpm's you have installed

---------------

i want to ask how can i fix the issue?

because i run "yum update",it fail.

Fail: (regarding Email Accounts)
I know I have seen a command line you can use which will activate :fail: in all the accounts on the server simultaneously so that you don't have to do each account separately, but I can't find that command.

Does anyone here know what that command is? I'm assuming it would involve /etc/valiases/?

if [ ! -f test.file ]
then
/etc/init.d/httpd restart
echo 'ALERT - HTTPD restarted on:' `date` | mail -s "Alert: HTTPD Restarted" user@domain.tld

exit $?
I have it on crontab

Code:

but it didn't seem to restart httpd, I got no e-mail and our site was down for several hours.

Is there anything wrong with the script?

Forward One Address, Fail The Rest?
I have a dedicated server with cPanel/WHM and on it is a site with for example user name: domain

The main email user name is of course domain I'd also like to forward admin@domainname.com to the domain user account then any other emails would fail. So say if someone sent an email to sales@domainname.com it would fail unless of course I had an account setup.

Currently I can get admin@domainname.com to foward to the main account box, however in doing so it will also forward everything else.

Is this possible?

I've pinged all the domains and they all seem to be fine and the hostname also seems to be setup I'm just not sure why my sites aren't loading.

I've also loaded the site on multiple computers using different dns servers and still no luck.

I haven't touched apache at all, but from what I understand I don't need to.

SAN - Fail Over / High Availability
we are currently planning to implement SAN to our enviroment - VPS hosting.

Al VPS should be placed on the SAN - iSCSI connected to be able live motion etc.

Currently we are fighting with idea of Failover/High avalability.
There has been rumors that dual controller SAN from HP/DELL are much more problematic than single controller versions.

We are also thinking about running some opensource like OpenFiler/FreeNAS/OpenSolaris or NexentaStore on supermicro boxes with SATA or single RAID controller.

But in that case - how make the iSCSI target highly available? Mirroring of the data/space is pretty easy with DRBD or ZFS but when one SAN box goes down, there should be no interruption in iSCSI targe service - no IP change etc..

Custom Services Fail After 70+ On Reboot
Ive been having this issue on a box im messing around with. I run custom services that launch an exe file. Everything runs fine while the server is running. But on reboot random custom services fail. Terminal services also fails to start.

The number of services that need launched on restart seems to be random each time. Sometimes services start to fail, at around 70+ being setup. Other times you don't see it failing until 100+ services needs started on reboot.

The server load with all services running is 2-5% and physical memory is about 200 megs of 1gig, paged, is about 300-400 megs used.

It is normally 3-4 custom services that fail on reboot. The ones that fail have the following error in event viewer.

Event Type:Error
Event Source:Aprog
Event Category:None
Event ID:116
Date:5/10/2007
Time:7:08:40 PM
User:N/A
Computer:XXXXXXXXX

Description:
Subprocess monitoring failed due to subprocess is no longer active. The subprocess is probably dead. Restarting the process. Error detail: Overlapped I/O operation is in progress.

It will keep getting this error over and over again. However, if i stop all custom services and then start them, everything launches fine.

When this happens on reboot Terminal services also fails to start. It will not start, until I stop all the custom services. At which point it allows me to start TS without any errors.

Event Type:Error
Event Source:Service Control Manager
Event Category:None
Event ID:7023

The Terminal Services service terminated with the following error:

A dynamic link library (DLL) initialization routine failed.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at [url]

What I am trying to accomplish is a way to automatically launch these EXE files, and have something that restarts them if they crash or fail. I haven't been able to find a specific reason this is happening or how to fix it. So I am open to any other suggestions on how to do this.

WHM Exim Does Not Refuse Emails During SMTP With :fail:
running WHM at Fedora 6... WHM 11.11.0 cPanel 11.16.0-R18546

I have a problem with spoofing spammers.. my queue is plenty of non-delivered emails from externals SMTP, sended to NON-existents address on my server...

The question is the destination domain (mydomain.com b.example) has already its ":fail: No Such User Here" alias.

SMF records applied, but not the most external SMTP servers checks them nowadays...

Using :fail: the email is never accepted into the server. During the initial SMTP negotiation when the senders SMTP server connects to your SMTP server, the sending SMTP server issues a RCPT command notifying your server which email address the email to follow is intended for. Your server then checks whether the recipient email actually exists on your server (a POP3 account, an alias or a catchall alias) and if it does not, it issues an SMTP DENY which terminates the attempt to deliver the email.

Well, in my case it justs receives message and then frozen it!

Pop Services Fail During Specific Hours Daily
My POP services keep failed daily between 10am-4pm central time. Rather strange.

However, sometimes some people can't access pop services, while others still can.

I thought it was a SpamAssassin issue as it was overloading a little bit due to corrupt files. Fixed that, and problem persists.

CentOS 4.x
cPanel 11.x
SpamAssassin 3.2.x

Google Doubts Hard Drives Fail Because Of Excessive Temperature, Usage
Mountain View (CA) - As a company with one of the world's largest IT infrastructures, Google has an opportunity to do more than just search the Internet. From time to time, the company publishes the results of internal research. The most recent project one is sure to spark interest in exploring how and under what circumstances hard drives work - or not.

There is a rule of thumb for replacing hard drives, which taught customers to move data from one drive to another at least every five years. But especially the mechanical nature of hard drives makes these mass storage devices prone to error and some drives may fail and die long before that five-year-mark is reached. Traditionally, extreme environmental conditions are cited as the main reasons for hard drive failure, extreme temperatures and excessive activity being the most prominent ones.

A Google study presented at the currently held Conference on File and Storage Technologies questions these traditional failure explanations and concludes that there are many more factors impacting the life expectancy of a hard drive and that failure predictions are much more complex than previously thought. What makes this study interesting is the fact that Google's server infrastructure is estimated to exceed a number of 450,000 fairly mainstream systems that, in a large number, use consumer-grade devices with capacities ranging from 80 to 400 GB in capacity. According to the company, the project covered "more than 100,000" drives that were put into production in or after 2001. The drives ran at a platter rotation speed of 5400 and 7200 rpm, came from "many of the largest disk drive manufacturers and from at least nine different models."

Google said that it is collecting "vital information" about all of its systems every few minutes and stores the data for further analysis. For example, this information includes environmental factors (such as temperatures), activity levels and SMART parameters (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) that are commonly considered to be good indicators to describe the health of disk drives.

In general, Google's hard drive population saw a failure rate that was increasing with the age of the drive. Within the group of hard drives up to one year old, 1.7% of the devices had to be replaced due to failure. The rate jumps to 8% in year 2 and 8.6% in year 3. The failure rate levels out thereafter, but Google believes that the reliability of drives older than 4 years is influenced more by "the particular models in that vintage than by disk drive aging effects."

Breaking out different levels of utilization, the Google study shows an interesting result. Only drives with an age of six months or younger show a decidedly higher probability of failure when put into a high activity environment. Once the drive survives its first months, the probability of failure due to high usage decreases in year 1, 2, 3 and 4 - and increases significantly in year 5. Google's temperature research found an equally surprising result: "Failures do not increase when the average temperature increases. In fact, there is a clear trend showing that lower temperatures are associated with higher failure rates. Only at very high temperatures is there a slight reversal of this trend," the authors of the study found.

In contrast the company discovered that certain SMART parameters apparently do have an effect drive failures. For example, drives typically scan the disk surface in the background and report errors as they discover them. Significant scan errors can hint to surface errors and Google reports that fewer than 2% of its drives show scan errors. However, drives with scan errors turned out to be ten times more likely to fail than drives without scan errors. About 70% of Google's drives with scan errors survived the first eight months after the first scan error was reported.

Similarly, reallocation counts, a number that results from the remapping of faulty sectors to a new physical sector, can have a dramatic impact on a hard drive's life: Google said that drives with one or more reallocations fail more often than those with none. The observed average impact on the average fail rate came in at a factor of 3-6, while about 85% of the drives survive past eight months after the first reallocation.

Google discovered similar effects on hard drives in other SMART categories, but them bottom line revealed that 56% of all failed drives had no count in either one of these categories - which means that more than half of all failed drives were put out of operation by factors other than scan errors, reallocation count, offline reallocation and probational counts.

In the end, Google's research does not solve the problem of predicting when hard drives are likely to fail. However, it shows that temperature and high usage alone are not responsible for failures by default. Also, the researcher pointed towards a trend they call "infant mortality phase" - a time frame early in a hard drive's life that shows increased probabilities of failure under certain circumstances. The report lacks a clear cut conclusion, but the authors indicate that there is no promising approach at this time than can predict failures of hard drives: "Powerful predictive models need to make use of signals beyond those provided by SMART."

Cant Connect To IIS
is to use windows authentication, to connect to the site, and connect to MS SQL with the same user.

I read on the net (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms998358.aspx), and it said I should go to my default sites properties, to to the "directory security" tab, and make sure "Integrated Windows authentication" is the only box that is checked.

I did that and now I cant connect to my site...

When I try to connect, it bring up a windows user name and password box. I put a user name and password in, but nothing...

Iv double checked the user exist, and still nothing...

Clients Can't Connect To IP
We're having a small problem with one of our Ventrilo boxes (Linux) that seems to be blocking users from connecting. The DC (The Planet) is reporting that the issue is likely with the user and my tech is also saying the same thing. I have reason to believe they're both wrong but wanted to see if anyone had any ideas.

Here are 3 tracert's that show normal activity until the user reaches the DC network and then they can't reach our server.

All 3 of these are from different users experiencing the exact same problem.

The tech at the datacenter checked and said I delete their network gateway from the list of routes.

Vsftpd Running, Can't Connect From Outside
I have been pulling my hair out all day trying to fix this issue, which should be simple in theory.

Basically in summary, vsftpd is running on the server, I can't connect to FTP from my own computer.

I have tried many things, but right now the way it stands is my vsftpd.conf file has listen=YES. I did a netstat -pan, with a return of:
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:21 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 29984/vsftpd

I can telnet/FTP into port 21 locally, so vsftpd is indeed running properly, but I cannot connect from the outside at all. I have also commented out everything in /etc/hosts.allow.

At this point, I am out of ideas. And to top it all off, I'm on a tight deadline. Usually works out there way doesn't it?

Can't Connect To Remote Desktop
I signed up for a Win2k3 VPS account with 3dgwebhosting. I'm a newbie to Plesk and win2k3 so I spent the first day getting head around Plesk.

I then logged into Remote Desktop only to find someone else had beat me. They'd hacked in and downloaded a mass email client, email stripper and obviously sent out spam from a 2mb text file of email addresses.

I didn't spend long in Remote Desktop, but while there I switched on Windows Firewall, changed my admin login password and logged off.
Now, 24 hours later, I can't get back in. I get the error - This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try again.....

I can still login through Plesk, FTP and ExpressionWeb.

Is FW keeping me out of RD or has the hacker returned?

How Can I Connect More Than Server With One Domain
i want to know how EXACTLY connect more than server with one domain

i will explain what i want [note : sites & ip all for example below]

i have a site name [company name] is www.comanyname.com

and i have two servers [client servers] with the following dns

server 1#
ns1.companyname.com pointed to ip 192.168.1.1
ns2.companyname.com pointed to ip 192.168.1.2

server 2#
ns3.companyname.com pointed to ip 10.0.0.1
ns4.companyname.com pointed to ip 10.0.0.2

now i want to make a NEW domain name like

www.companynamedns.com

and i want this domain hold all client's servers [want to spilt the company dns of the client dns], like

ns1.companynamedns.com
ns2.companynamedns.com
ns3.companynamedns.com
ns4.companynamedns.com
vip.companynamedns.com
s1.companynamedns.com

i can make any name server like i want,

so the first thing it must to be all server's ip that i want to connect to the domain companynamedns.com in www A record and mx record too

and if u ping to companynamedns.com every time it give you random ip [cuz i put www a record for more than server with same one domain name]

so this way not very cleard for me and i want to know

how can i add the www a record?

should i create a dns zone in any server but this entry in one server in whm [note i use cpanel/whm]?

and put the www A record with new domain name companynamedns.com for every time i get a new server like i add www A record this

companynamedns.com 1 A 192.168.1.1 14400s
companynamedns.com 1 A 10.0.0.1 14400s
companynamedns.com 1 A 10.10.10.1 14400s
companynamedns.com 1 A 11.11.11.1 14400s

and mx record like this

companynamedns.com 1 TXT v=spf1 a mx ip4:192.168.1.1 ip4:10.0.0.1 ip4:10.10.10.1 -all 14400s

but how about the ns record?

should i but all ns record in the dns zone in whm?

[note : there is another company make this trick and he have alot of name server NS but i didn't see all registred in dns records only 2 NS for the site And pointed to one server only]

so how can the client connect the the server with ns that the main domain name companynamedns.com already did't added the others NS in the dns zone

like A client make the nameserver for his site is

ns22.companynamedns.com
ns23.companynamedns.com

but the DNS Records for the companynamedns.com is ONLY

s1.companynamedns.com
s2.companynamedns.com

so how the ns22 and ns23 working and it didn't even added in the dns zone in the main domain companynamedns.com

maybe he add all the name server he want in the domain control panel in the child name server only not in the name server but i think it didn't work it must be add in the name server too

i really going to be CRAZY for this

this trick is the right way to connect more than server with one domain name

i colored the thread to read and get my idea easy and i really need expert help me with that issue

How To Connect Virtual PC To Host PC
I've downloaded and installed the Microsoft Virtual PC image for testing IE6. The development copy of my website is on the host PC, running on Windows XP/Apache/PHP. I need to use IE6 on the virtual PC to view pages served up by Apache on the host PC.

I know this requires networking them together, but I've no idea how to do that. I've installed the Microsoft Loopback Adapter on the host PC, and told the virtual PC it can use that adapter in the Virtual PC settings dialogue, but on the host PC the loopback adapter says "limited or no connectivity".

(Before someone suggests it, I've been using MultipleIEs. Trouble is, you can't test printing with that - you need a proper copy of IE6.)
