Emails Going To SPAM Folders
I can send e-mails out but many times they go directly to the recipient's SPAM box.
Also, my server cannot send to any company e-mail that uses MXLogic.net's services.
Going to [url]<--My server IP is on ZERO blacklists.
/etc/resolv.conf appears correct
/etc/hosts also appears correct
Is there something that I am overlooking?

Catching Spam Emails
We use some spam blockers that come with cPanel but sometimes it feels like it isn't enough to block out all spam coming in and going out of the server. Anyone here have any experience with any other third party softwares that may be able to stop emails in its track basing it on the content of the email itself?

Cpanel: SPAM IN YOUR EMAILS!
I would like to offer some good advice to people who Host thier sites with Hostgator or any other Webhosts who provide Cpanel. Please Check your "Mail" feature. I just check all of my sites Mail in the Mail section. All of my sites do not have webmail set up, but I was surprised to find tens of thousans of spam mails and I dont even have any email accounts set up! This was causing me to get 'iNode" warnings that my account would be soon suspended and I should upgrade my site to Dedicated Hosting, something I cannot afford! Go to [url] Steps 1. Click on Mail 2. Click on Webmail 3. Click on Horde 4. Login 5. Click on Mail SURPRISE! Do you too have thousands of Spams ... even if you dont even have an email account set up? If you folder is full of thousands of Spams then do this... 6. Click on Folders 7. Tick Inbox 8. Choose Empy Folders from the Drop Down box above 9. Click Empty Selected Folders 10. Do this regularly before you get an email from Hostgator like this: Quote: WARNING: gator85.hostgator.com: comscout: 63970 inodes Server: gator85 User: xxxxx Email: xxxxx(Owner) iNodes: 63970 (warning) Date: Sun Jul 27 00:22:59 CDT 2008 Email: xxxx Account Name: xxxxx Server: gator85.hostgator.com iNodes (Files): 63970/50,000 (127.00%) Hello, To maintain the highest level of performance on our shared servers we have a maximum inode (file) limit of 50,000 inodes (files) per account. The size of the file does not matter, only the number of files. For example, a DVD image (say, 4.5gb) only counts as one inode, or file. Our limit, as outlined in our terms of service, is 50,000 files per account. We generally don't hold people strictly to this limit, but at the same time we expect our users to respect the limits of the system. When an account has hundreds of thousands of files, it significantly degrades overall disk performance, as each file on the disk must be tracked/indexed. An easy analogy would be a table of contents or glossary for a book. If the book only has a few hundred pages, the index or glossary is likely to be small and easy to search. If the book has 5,000 pages, finding what you want might take significantly longer. The file system on a server works in a similar way, just on a larger scale. Our experience has shown that 50,000 files per account is a fair number, and accounts that exceed that by a significant amount cause disk performance issues. This message is to inform you that the listed account has significantly exceeded our limits for disk inodes/files and could potentially lead to disk issues. It is also important to realize that accounts that exceed the inode (file) limit are not backed up by our courtesy weekly backup service, per section 7b of our Terms of Service. Of course, we advise every user to run their own backups to be safe. Accounts over our the 50,000 inode limit are bypassed so that backups can complete in a timely fashion for everyone. Otherwise, accounts with hundreds of thousands or more inodes will utilize more server resources than other accounts, and could lead to file system errors on our backup servers. This account will be re-checked again in 7 days to verify it is below 50,000 files. If this account remains above the maximum inode limit after repeated checks, we'll have to review the situation further and advise a course of action. It is critical that one of the following actions take place before that happens: a) reduce the number of inodes/files. This change must be permanent; if you have a high number of cache files or similar, and you expect them to naturally exceed the inode limit again in the future, the configuration must be changed to limit the total number of cached files. If you are completely unaware of the source of the inodes, it may be that you have left your default mailbox enabled, and never cleared it. Over time, it can fill up with spam, consuming hundreds of thousands of inodes. If you have a catch-all enabled on your account, this can greatly increase the amount of mail/spam that our account receives and will raise your inode usage quickly unless routinely emptied. If you would like assistance clearing these folders from unwanted email or removing the catch-all from your account, please let us know and we would be happy to assist you. The default mailbox is located at: /home/xxxx/mail/cur /home/xxxxx/mail/new b) upgrade to dedicated service, where inode counts are no longer checked. In many cases, accounts that significantly exceed our inode/file limits have simply outgrown the shared environment, and a dedicated server is the logical choice. In many cases, the transfer from a shared to dedicated server will incur no charge. In rare situations, accounts with excessive numbers of accounts or users may require a fee; the transfer department would advise you of that fact prior to the transfer taking place. If you've read this far, it's clear you're serious about taking care of the issue and we can offer you 50% off off the first month's purchase of a dedicated server. To receive the discount, please: - Reply to this email stating you'd like to upgrade. You will automatically be assigned a ticket number, which will be visible in the subject line. You may need to confirm your email if this is the first time you've ever sent us a ticket or emailed one of our departments. - Order a dedicated server: [url] - Email sales@hostgator.com after placing your order. This promotion is unadvertised, and must be manually approved. You must reference the ticket # you receive (above) to qualify for the discounted rate. This promotion only applies to dedicated servers priced $ 219.00 or higher. We thank you for taking the time to resolve this issue. If you have any questions or perhaps you are not sure what could be causing the high number of inodes, we can help you with that. Simply reply to this email and we will be more than happy to assist you. As soon as I deleted all of my emails, guess what .... I already have 4 Spam emails, that is very quick! I have 4 main sites with hostgator and this how much emails I have without knowing: Site 1: 27,237 Spam Emails Site 2: 43,438 Spam Emails Site 3: 7,398 Spam Emails Site 4: 63,972 Spam Emails This is who one Spam was from: To: myaccount@gator257.hostgator.com So the spammers send the emails to gator257.hostgator.com and so forth! That is crap! Surely they can fix it, as I say, I dont even have a email account in my Cpanel!

I Keep Seeing Spam Emails In My Mail Queue
I contacted the guys who I pay to watch over my linux Cpanel server and I do not think they know how to fix the problem. When I look in my mail queue manager in WHM I always see these spam type emails. I also see that my site IP gets blacklisted on: [url] I delist and then it appears again a couple of days later. My server is only used to send emails such as registrations and user notifications that they have subscribed to. Could anyone please tell me how to get rid of the spam?

New Type Of Spam Emails (same FROM And TO Address)
we are receiving a new type of spam emails in most of the domains hosted on different servers. In this type of spam emails, the From address is the same as the To address and is of the user who is receiving the emails. For example, a@abc.com is sending email to a@abc.com which is not originating from the server. However, since the From Address is the same as the To address, it fools the antispam and the emails are delivered as genuine emails. Has anybody else faced the same problem lately? Does anybody have as workaround to stop these type of spam emails?

Register.com "Marketing Emails" (Spam)
Recently I had some dealings with Register.com for a friend of mine who needed to gain access to the account of a deceased family member in order to manage the web site for her company. She was getting nowhere with them and found their support staff to be less than helpful in the retrieval of her domain name and account. So she called me up, knowing I work in the industry, and asked me to see if I could get any information out of Register which might aid in the retrieval of her web site. I obliged, and opened up a live support chat with Register seeking information. After a little bit of prying--it seems this is kind of an odd request--the technician told me that they needed to send me an email with the information from the correct department, and couldn't give me an ETA, just "as soon as possible." Now, having worked in the industry for years, to me this might as well have meant "we'll have an email to you sometime in the next year or so." Surprisingly it took only a day and a half and I got all of the information I needed, and my friend is on her way to retrieving her account. Success, right? Not entirely. This afternoon I wake up to find an email from Register.com, Inc. in my inbox with the subject "Get a FREE domain from Register.com." Now, let me put this into perspective. I have the last couple years of my email account easily accessible. A search for Register.com turned up several marketing emails (which I must not have noticed prior to this and just thought of it as normal stuff I get), and the correspondence with them regarding the retrieval of my friend's domain. All of the marketing emails for Register have arrived in my inbox since I contacted them regarding the issue. This leads me to believe that I was only just recently added to their list, say, I don't know, two weeks ago maybe? So apparently they think it's funny to sign me up for their marketing email list simply for talking to their support staff. I can find no clear statement on their web site, anywhere, that says collecting my email for support purposes earns me the privilege of receiving this junk mail from them. I certainly never checked a box anywhere saying "yes, send me this crap!" While they do offer an unsubscribe button (and I certainly have done so now), I'm still extremely unhappy about this incident and I feel as if this is kind of (ok, it is) a shady way to market your product to anybody. So now through this little trick, I'd like to say that Register.com has lost whatever potential they had for my business in the future, and I would simply like to say that you may take this into consideration when contacting them regarding anything, ever. If someone can find damning evidence (preferably in a clear statement where someone would read it) saying that I opted in to receive this anywhere on their site, I will happily retract this statement, otherwise, their emails to me regarding their product remain unsolicited and therefore, spam.

What used to happen with my IIS is it would list out all of the folders which I had in the wwwroot and I would simply navigate through and select which site needed to be tested. At the moment, I have cleared out the wwwroot folder entirely since all of the stuff in there was to do with a "Windows XP Professional" page which appeared upon installation. However, now that I don't need it anymore, I decided to clear it out and test IIS out by making a new folder called "sites" into wwwroot. Now though, it simply comes up with a "Directory Listing Denied. This Virtual Directory does not allow contents to be listed." error message, even though I have changed the permissions on the wwwroot folder to allow writing etc. Could this be because it's IIS 5.1 and I need to install IIS 6.0 instead or is something else wrong? I know for a fact that my operating system (Windows Media Center Edition 2005) will do this list as I have had it before, back before I installed Vista and then decided to come back to MCE.

Accessing Shared Folders
I have server which all files and folders are stored on. Now there are a couple of folders which are only accessible by one machine at present and all the other machines when they access the folder it is displayed as empty. I have checked all permisions and all machines viewing of files settings are the same and folders accessible by all machines have the same settings as the couple which are only accessible from this one machine. If I copy and paste the folder all machines then have access to the folder from although this would be a lengthy exercise for the full hard drive.

Folders Display Permissions
I would to know how I can change the display permissions for my website sub folders and files from public view, for instants The current is you can access to any folders or files once trying access to any folders in my website like open this link www.yoursite.com/photos/ will see all sub-folders and files in this photos folder also you can see the other folders in another level by going to the top level folders! but I think there is a way to enforce my users to write the full path of any selected photo or file they want without browsing my folders and sub-folder.

Mystery Folders Being Created
I am designing a site for a client and in all the years I've done design etc, I've come up against a phenomenon with their VPS server they have. It's linux and uploading files I am using WS_FTP Home. I am uploading files and folders to their public_html/domain.com/ (*I use domain here for their privacy) and in some folders (directories) after doing so, a mystery folder suddenly appears that is named 5" and as you enter that folder, you see the path directory show up "public_html" and if you go into that one, you come up to the domain.com folder again, and if you deeper into that one you start to see this phenomenon of mirroring folders of the one you go into. Example: public_html/domain.com/images/5"/public_html/domain.com/images/file ***the file whether it's an image jpg, png, etc is created as the last directory as a folder, not a file. I should also mention that as you go deeper in the 5" mystery directory folder, you no longer see the path in the FTP anything past the 5" one even as you go further in. Oh, and it doesn't allow you to delete these 5" folders regardless of what permissions. And this folder seems to show up in many areas of this website's directory structure...mostly where images are (don't know if that is just a coincidence). So hope all this makes sense....anyone seen this before and what the cause could be? Their host doesn't seem to know the reason and says they cannot see it even though others can. They said it's the FTP program as the cause and not their server. My comeback to that is that I've used this FTP for years and never before seen this happen. It's only with this one client's server.

SSL Certificates Works For Folders?
Say i have domain zzzzz.com and have some folders say a, b and c would ssl if installed for main domain zzzzz.com work for https://zzzzz.com/a and so on ? or would wildcard ssl be required for that ? And what if that /a folder is actually a subdomain, but since you can access subdomains via url/folder instead of folder.url would ssl work on it using url/folder option instead of subdomain url ?

Deny Perl In Public Folders
How do you guys deny run of perl/bash scripts from /tmp, /var/tmp, /dev/shm? I've tried to build simple shell wrapper, but that's not a compromise if you run for example spamassassin on the same server (it needs direct io to/from perl binary). I'm looking intro some kind of binary wrapper or patch that will deny running perl scripts from public folders (also the same for shell scripts will be great). Any ideas or solutions? If anyone interested in primitive shell wrapper code: Code: #!/bin/sh ARGS=`echo $@ | grep -v "/tmp/"` if [ "$ARGS" != "" ]; then /usr/bin/perl.orig $ARGS; fi

Zipping Up Multiple Public_html Folders From Shell
OK so I'm on the shell and looking at the contents of my home/ directory which has all the various accounts. In each account directory are subdirs such as mail, logs, tmp, etc, and public_html. Is there a way (or a ZIP command) to be in the home directory and create a massive ZIP file containing all the account directories, each containing ONLY the respective public_html subdir for that account? Using the command "zip -r Backups.zip ./" seems to include all those extra folders (such as mail, etc.) that aren't needed.

Access Folders In Root / Bypass Wordpress
My blog is set up to display in the root of my domain, although the files on the server sit within their own folder: i.e Server files Public_html/wordpressfiles/ Broswer displays www . mydomain . com/ (disaplys pages from /wordpressfiles) The problem I have is that I can't access individual directories within the root, unrelated to wordpress. e.g I have Public_html/folder2/... Setup on the server, but if I enter the path in my browser: www . mydomain . com/folder2 wordpress thinks I want to access: www . mydomain . com/wordpress/folder2 ...which doesn't exist. How can I re-gain access to folders in the root, without wordpress interfering?

Removing Large Files Or Folders CentOS
Something weird happening here. I have tried every string possible... There are a number of folders I want to remove off my server, tried the good old and simple... rm -r /folder/ And then went and ended up with a string as long as my screen. No matter what I do, as it goes recursive in to the directory it asks me if I want to remove each file individually. No matter what string or action I take it insists on asking me as it goes to delete each file. Could this be a configuration option in CentOS?

I can't create a members area either unless i can add a new folder which i can't i dont think.

Copy Newly Created Folders In /tmp
We've had someone starting nobody PERL procs on a box and we can't quite track it down or read the file to see what it is. What he does is to create a folder in /tmp, execute the script from there and delete the folder as soon as it's running (yes, /tmp is mounted noexec, makes no difference). We've managed to discover and block the IP that was doing this, but that's no fix. He hasn't been back since banning the IP...so far. What we would like to do is see if anyone knows of (or can help create) a script that can watch the /tmp folder and copy newly created directories and thier contents to another dir (also notifying via email would be helpful) in order to see what the heck it's doing, and hopefully be able to figure out how it's getting in. Nothing in any logs this time, and the PERL process seems to be able to hide itself from PS. That bit worries me quite a lot, but none of the binaries appear to have been changed, and it doesn't appear we've been rooted in any way. Thoughts on this, ideas and suggestions welcome. Failing that, is it possible without breaking the box to prevent the creation of new directories in /tmp? This I seriously doubt, but if all they need to do is create a folder and work from there, noexec is a joke.

Offsite Backups (via Rsync) - What Files/folders To Backup
I'm currently using (amongst other backup systems) rsync to an offsite space (am using BQBackup at the moment) I'm just wondering - apart from backing up all of /home/, /var/lib/mysql/ and the important config files (httpd.conf, php.conf, etc etc) is there anything else that *needs* to be backed up? Obviously in a worst case scenario, a new machine would be deployed with a fresh OS install (and a fresh WHM/cPanel install) so I wouldn't worry about backing up OS files or cPanel core files, although I'm wondering if there's anything apart from the /home/ directory and the MySQL databases which would be lost (and so need backing up) in the event of a crash?

How Can This Be Done? IIS Multiple Vir. Dir. Or Real Folders
The scenerio is client want to enable unlimited URL for his individual customers. ie,[url] Platform: W2K3 IIS6 I only know two ways doing it 1. Create a real folder /username1, /username2, but this will be real messy, and I remember there is a limitation for up to 36,000 sub-folders within a root folder under Windows (correct me if I am wrong) 2. Create virtual directories under IIS Manager using ASP/ASP.NET script, this is easiest, but having two problem. a. If I have say 10,000 vir. dir., and then I try to expand that root folder under IIS manager, IIS manager will hang for sure. b. Having such huge vir. dir will inevitably having a huge IIS Metabase, this means a great chance of corrupting it, so it's very dangrous. I really hope someone can give me some hints how to do this in a scalable way? I know many Web2.0 site do this even using IIS6 ie, [url]

GoDaddy Tells Me It's Normal To See The Folders Of Some Random Persons Account
I signed up with GoDaddy shared hosting just a couple days ago. I logged into my site using SSH and FileZilla. And I see hundreds of folders and files that are not mine. These are files from some random account. These are not the basic starter-folders/files. Yet when I connect via FTP (not SSH), I only see the regular starter-set with just a few folders and a few files (not hundreds). This seemed totally loopy, so I called customer support, and the support guy agreed that it was not right. He "escalated" the issue to technical support. I received an email from them asking for screenshots of all these random files I see via SSH. I sent in the screenshots of FileZilla showing all these files. Then GoDaddy responded with this: -------------------------------------------- Dear Sir/Madam, Thank you for contacting Hosting Support. We have reviewed your hosting account [edit] and SSH does in fact show more files than typical FTP. This is normal and not something to be alarmed about. As you are on the shared environment there is certain folders that you will not be able to access, one such example provided in your screenshots is 'herawellness', attempting to access this directory will result in a access denied error. If you are attempting to upload web content you will need to put the content in the the /html/ directory. If you are having trouble using SSH you may want to consult your favorite search engine for assistance with SSH commands. Please contact us if you have any further issues. Regards, Adam M. Hosting Support ---------------------------------------------- This doesn't seem right at all. I've only hosted with one other host besides godaddy, and using SSH I did not suddenly see hundreds of random files from some random account.

Disk Quota Issue - Locating The Folders With The Highest Number Of Files
we've been having issues with reaching or exceeding our disk quotas. I've checked carefully, and while I've cleared our mail queue's, I don't think that's the issue. So what I'm really looking for is a way to figure out why we have so many files (our quota is 220000, and I'm pretty confident that we aren't intentionally doing anything to create so many files). There's lots of information on finding the folders with the largest file sizes, but locating the folders with the greatest number of files isn't quite so simple--or at least, it doesn't seem very clear to me. Does anyone know a way via the command line to figure out this information, short of going through every single folder and figuring out how many files are in the specific folder?
