Email Round Trip Monitoring

May 19, 2008

Does anyone know any tools or scripts that you can run to do email round trip monitoring (eg, sending and ensuring itís received within x minutes)?

Not looking for a solution that is hosted (eg, websitepulse.com) but for something that can be run off a machine locally.

Dealing With ThePlanet Sales Staff Is Like A Trip To The Dentist

Apr 17, 2008

I've been pretty happy with my servers with theplanet/ev1servers for the past, err, 5 years. But the OSes were out of date and it seemed like I could stand to get some significantly improved hardware for what I'm paying now (or, comparable hardware for a lot less).

I put in a RFQ from ThePlanet to see what I could do as far as upgrading my current server, hoping for something a little better than buying a new server while the old one is up and moving everything over, and also hopefully avoiding re-paying a one-time fee I had for a secondary hard drive.

Now I have no problem whatsoever with the result -- that my only option is to buy a new server, they won't migrate my HDs, and they won't upgrade my current server, and they won't give me any kind of credit for the second hard drive or let me transfer it to a new server. I get where they're coming form, even though it might make sense to figure out something a little better for a customer of 5 years that's dropped about $25k over that time period.

The problem is their sales staff. I'm surprised that theplanet (at least theplanet I remember from when I signed up) would have sales people so apathetic and basically useless.

Getting information I requested in my initial ticket took back-and-forth with a sales rep over the span of over 24 hours (and I still haven't really gotten an answer on one part, about my secondary hard drive). Actually looking at the ticket now, the initial response was over 24 hours after I opened a ticket (and it was opened during working hours).

Heck, the first two responses didn't even include a price for the hardware he wanted me to buy, just if I wanted to proceed and buy it.

Figuring it beats waiting I did one of their instant chats and before answering my questions I was told to be sure to give the guy credit for the servers I order. In fact, him telling me his contact information and to choose him were the only complete sentences I got, and roughly 80% of the communication I received.

I haven't needed support on my server recently, so I can't speak to if this is the quality of their support department now. I don't think I'll be around to find out though.

(Executive summary: Hello SoftLayer!)

Email Server Monitoring

Jan 28, 2009

My company has been having some issues with our email periodically but our host provides no help other than a graph showing the amount of daily relays.

Does anyone know of a good email server montior or diagnostic solution that works with MailEnable? Preferably something free or cheap.

I basically want to be able to get in and see what emails were sent and received from who and the IPs if possible. I don't care about seeing the content of peoples emails but just a report similar to a telephone bill would surely help.

Monitoring PHP Scripts That Send Email

Jul 25, 2007

Is anyone aware of any good tools or tips that I can use to monitor use of qmail/sendmail to generate and send email messages from PHP scripts on a web server?

I want to keep a check on sites that are sending email from the site, to make sure they are not being exploited and result in our server getting blacklisted by big service providers. I'd love a tool that would automatically block messages from an account after a certain threshold is hit.

I'm running a Plesk 8.1.1 & 8.2.0 server configuration..

Round Robin With Iptables

Nov 13, 2005

iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth0 -j SNAT -p tcp --dport 80 --to-source 1.2.3.4-1.2.3.6

If I'm understanding the iptables man correctly this rule should round-robin outgoing http requests over the IP range, instead it's sticking to the first IP no matter how many connections I make.

SSL Certificate And Round Robin

Sep 22, 2007

We have a few IIS servers that will be acting as front end for our users to split off the load.
Currently, we have one IIS with 1 SSL. we are going to do round robining for the FQDN to span a few IIS servers. I just wanted to make sure we would not run into any issues with the certificate. I was thinking of installing it on one server after generating the CSR and then once the root trusted is in place, export it and import it in all the other servers. Do you think this would be an issue at all? is there a better way?

additionally, the certificate is about to expire, I need a certificate with $1mil insurance, what do you think is the best deal (trusted source) going around? should I do the ones with 256bit too or have you seen any conflicts, do they auto negotiate if the client can only support 128bit?

Round Robin And UserDirs

Dec 7, 2008

Round-robin and UserDirs

I just setup a round-robin so that my website is always available even if one of the 2 servers goes down. It works like it should, however, i can't access the userdirs from server2. The userdirs are located on server1.

It's setup like this:

www1.domain.org is server1
www2.domain.org is server2www.domain.org is the round-robin. I have 2 WWW's pointed with an A record to each of the server's IP addresses.

On server 1 i have 2 userdirs which are accessible through www1.domain.org/~user . They should also be reachable on www2, because if they are not, they wont be accessible half the time due to the round robin.

I therefore added a .htaccess in www2's root document directory with the following info:

Redirect /~user1/ http://www1.domain.org/~user1/
Redirect /~user2/ http://www1.domain.org/~user2/

So when i go to www2.domain.org/~user1/, i should be automatically be transferred to server1... but all i get is a 404 error page. It works perfectly when accessed on www1. I don't see what i'm doing wrong. I thought it might be the userDir setting in apache that might be causing trouble.. but that is turned off on server2, so that should not be the problem. Anyone here have any idea how to access the user dirs via server2?

Global Colo - Round 2

Nov 29, 2007

It seems the more places we can put servers, the more places boss-man wants them

We're setting up an external network to test back into our network from geographically/carrier diverse locations. We've got about 15 hosts up, but most are in the states, one in london, one in amsterdam, one in frankfurt and one in hong kong.

The current wish list of locations includes -

- Japan
- S. Korea
- Australia (holy cow bw is expensive in sydney! is anyone charging less than $500 per Mb?)
- Paris, France (we have one quote in, but it is pretty pricy)
- Italy
- Spain
- Sweden

I'm doing research and have submitted rfq's to companies in most of these locations, but was hoping for personal recommendations of hosts you have used.

Looking For Redundant Setup, Round Robin?

Nov 5, 2008

Looking for redundant setup, round robin?

I'm looking to make high availability setup, and wondering how many of you have made it so?
we are looking to multi-home the page with a round robin setup, using multiple VPSs/dedicated servers geographically different locations.

Right now i'm still looking at "stale" DNS setup, no automanagement of servers down. Is there a service/software which already offers automatic changes of zones for removing servers which are down, and adding them back when they get back online?

Do i need to custom tailor everything?

Round-Robin Domain Name Server Failover

Jul 13, 2007

I am trying to do a fail over solution with round robin dns. Our dns is served by windows and our web servers are setup with Linux..

I know round-robin does not by default do a fail over, however my understanding is that a script can be used to remove the failed server for dns, is anyone aware of something that will do this for windows?

to monitor our VPS's customers, not our up time but our VPS customer sites resource usage.

Maybe a mixture between TOP/PS and WHM|Server Status|Apache Status
Summarized by domain in a period of time.

Our VPS is going blackzone many times/day and I need to find in real time the actual offending site or application.

I need something that tell me in plain english:
- Site XXX is taking all your VPS resources
- Application XXX is just bombing your VPS
- Close port XXX because your're under hacking

Best Monitoring Application?

Dec 20, 2008

Best monitoring application?

We need a good (best?) network/hardware monitoring application for monitoring our servers located at 3 different datacenters and around 50 servers.. I've founded some programs but they don't cover my needs 100%

Basicly I need these;

- Adding servers easily.

- Adding monitoring channel for each servers. (load, network, disk/ram usage etc..)

- Adding users and attaching users to servers seperately.
(For example I will add justify user and attach him to server1, will add wht user and attach him the server2 and their permissions will be different and they will have no control on other's servers.)

- Web based controller for users/admins

- I want to install it to my windows/linux servers and monitor all remotely..

- SMS / mms / msn / email / icq notifications.

- Ability to post/get notification.

Bandwidth Monitoring ...

Nov 10, 2008

Give me 1000GB or 2000GB and that's my limit that I'll try and not go over. Pretty
simple.

However, I'm now dealing with a provider that has me really confused. This company is charging us based on 95th percentile and we're now being asked to commit to 8.5 MBPS while the server doesn't even go over 1500GB monthly bandwidth limit.

Is this correct:

- We're not using tons of bandwidth but we do have large bursts

- The company is ultimately charging you for the bursts
