Does It Matter If The Company Owns Its Equipment
Feb 29, 2008
employees, owners, customers and everyone feel free to join in and tell us what you think.
Do you feel that your data is safe if the company manages their own servers? By manage I mean they fully own and operate their own hardware.
Or does it not matter as long as the company is a long time and known provider? Do you ask yourself this question when you look for a host?

i've installed this shared SSL certificate on my server for a domain. now the weird thing is when i go to [url]it redirects to the site which owns the SSL certificate.
any idea how to either disable https access for everything else, or just now have it redirect to that site?

I have seen a number of threads that specify location (mostly US) as a critereon for VPS selection. I am based in India and looks like there are vew VPS providers here and most of the VPS providers are located in the US (some in the UK as well).

Just looking for opinions on uptime guarantees. Does anyone actually look at those guarantees anymore? Or is it just assumed that every host now a days is up 99.9% of the time.
The reason I ask is that it appears that every host has one, but I haven't really ever experienced one myself.

We currently have two vps's one in chicago and one in dallas. We have our primary in chicago because we figured fewer hops=faster load times for website. is this really true?
right now we get pings around 35-60ms to chicago and 60-170ms to dallas. does this major difference really amount to anything?

I intend to subscribe to a VPS and I'm trying to decide whether to go with a company in the US or in my home country, Singapore (which is on the other side of the globe).
Price wise, US web hosting companies beat their Singapore counterparts hands down. The prices in Singapore are easily 2.5 times that of the US (for equivalent specs).
But in terms of server round trip times, Singapore is much faster for local users. (99% of my users will be based in Singapore.) A ping to a US server takes an average of 380ms, compared to 13ms for a ping to a Singapore server (from Singapore).
In terms of reliability, both are the same.
MY QUESTIONS:
1. Is the server round trip time really the main bottleneck (from the time the user clicks a button to the time she gets a response)? Or should I not be worried about this?
2. What is the recommended hosting option (US or Singapore), taking into consideration just two factors: price and speed?

Does support matter if there was 100% uptime and scalability?
Our team has been developing scalable sites since 2004. We started renting servers from Layeredtech then, since they had good reviews and they were still good until we migrated away from dedicated server land. Although we have systems administration backgrounds, it still took time away from developing software in order to administer the servers (look over logs, backups/restores, performance graphs, hardware failure, etc). Having said that, one thing I've noticed is that customers are usually happy if servers are always running and running fast.
To get rid of the systems administration part we tried Mosso (they had just released, great support but a lot of problems), we tried mediatemple's grid (also had a lot of problems), couldnt try EC2 because of persistent storage, and lastly we are currently using thegridlayer (it lags, the initial request takes about a second to display a page with no load on the server).
The next things to try were VPS then managed dedicated servers. We decided to try VPSes so we can isolate sites from each other and add VPSes as needed for specific sites. So I got a zone.net and they were running fine until they had a problem mentioned here. People recommended them because they had fast servers, now is the opposite because of this one downtime.
So finally, my questions:
1) how much do you think support is needed if your hosts provides fast servers and 100% uptime?
2) What measures do you take (if any) to verify the host's procedures such as backups, company size, profitability, etc?
3) How do you verify that a host is not overselling before buying a hosting package (assuming shared or VPS)?

Couldn't you just remote access into your server from elsewhere? This would save you the hassle and cost of buying/installing/maintaing the KVM equipment?
In the rare case where you have no network access but need access to the server, then you could directly plug keyboard, monitor, and mouse into the server directly, right?
And in cases where you do have network access, couldn't you just plug in your laptop into the network in the colocation facility or wherever and remote access to the servers sitting two feet away from you?

We have 3 1-U servers and a 1-U UPS located in a datacenter in Vancouver. If we were also located in Vancouver, I'd probably just eBay things off. However, I'm not anywhere close to there, and I can't ask the people running the datacenter to package them up and ship them off to eBay sellers. Any suggestions for how to get rid of the equipment and maybe make some money?
I did some Googling for computers liquidators in Vancouver and didn't find much. Ideally I'd want some local firm to just show up, pick up the goods, and at some point pay me for them.

I have these lines in sendmail.mc and I've compiled the sendmail.cf with them:
LOCAL_DOMAIN(`freesexdoor.com')dnl
MASQUERADE_AS(`freesexdoor.com')dnl
FEATURE(masquerade_envelope)dnl
MASQUERADE_DOMAIN(localhost)dnl
MASQUERADE_DOMAIN(localhost.localdomain)dnl
I have the users daemon, freesexd and root in the trusted_users file. I have restarted sendmail (using service sendmail restart). I have the domains: server.freesexdoor.com, freesexdoor.com and mail.freesexdoor.com in the sendmail's local_hosts file.
In Apache 2's httpd.conf, I have this: php_admin_value sendmail_path '/usr/sbin/sendmail -t -i -f freesexd [at} freesexdoor.com'
Yet when I sent an e-mail with php to advertising [at} freesexdoor.com, I got these headers in the e-mail, which don't look good to a spam filter:
Received: from localhost.localdomain (IS-3293 [127.0.0.1])
by localhost.localdomain (8.13.8/8.13.8) with ESMTP id
Received: (from daemon@localhost)
by localhost.localdomain (8.13.8/8.13.8/Submit) id
Message-Id: <200712180935.lBI9ZrRs005480@localhost.localdomain>
Additionally hotmail rejects my e-mails and it is obvious why. (My OpenSPF record is fine btw and on my former server I was able to send e-mails with it fine.)
Naturally I want something like "freesexdoor.com" to replace "localhost.localdomain" in those header lines. So how can I get this working?
The OS is CentOS 5 by the way.

As I sit here typing this I have a stack of 10 1U 866MHZ P3 Servers in front of me.
Sometimes its possible to sell these off to some sorry soul on ebay, however if not ebay what else? I would hate to throw them out and I would like to think they could be used for something. Perhaps I could upgrade the hard drives and turn them into file servers, but then how could I even break even with the cost of co-location.
Specifics
P3 866MHZ
256MB Ram (up ro 512)
10GB HD

I've been searching Google for a few days in hopes of finding companies that take off lease server equipment (sometimes almost brand new) and auctioning it off to people.
I've been buying alot of equipment through resellers of these places but I would like to cut out the middle man expense and bid for myself.
For example. This week I purchased ten Dell PowerEdge R200's with X3220 Xeon CPU's in them. These are fairly new. I don't want to buy first generation single-core xeon servers.
Look forward to finding out who is supplying these people.

Fiber will be 10mbps.

Over the next year we are working to migrate all of our shared servers from leased dedicated servers to our own collocated equipment. As you can imagine it is a slow process, but we are getting there.
By this next week we will have about ten servers and a couple of switches colo'd. I am thinking it is time we looked at insuring the equipment we have colo'd and get it taken care of before we build up the volume anymore.
Is anyone able to recommend someone we may be able to contact to obtain insurance on our equipment? All of our equipment is at Colo4Dallas, in Dallas, TX split between our rack there and their secure storage room (spare parts, switch, chassis etc.).
I tried contacting our insurance company here in the United Kingdom to see if we could add it on to our office insurance but they became very hesitant when I mentioned the hardware was in Dallas, despite the fact it is probably more secure in the Colo4Dallas data center than our office.
So I guess we would be looking for a US insurance company that specializes in this type of thing. We would be looking to protect against equipment being damaged due to things like power surges, being dropped by a technician etc.

I'm putting together a disaster recovery plan and I'm trying to come up with a quick way to get new machines in place in case of catastrophic hardware failure, e.g. two servers go down at the same time (this is an HA setup and must always remain fault tolerant). At this point I'm trying to find someone who would rent a server to me, allowing me to take physical possession of it.
Why do I need physical possession of it? The problem is that I use IP-based storage on a private network and therefore can't rely on a rented server in another cabinet, even across the aisle in the same datacenter, without adding significant complexity to my setup.
So my question, in summary, is this: What would be the fastest, cheapest and simplest way to get a new server in my cabinet in a few short hours?
My servers are going to be in Colo4Dallas, so if there's a provider there who specializes in this or has made an arrangement with you or someone you know in the past, please let me know about them. If you can think of a better way to do things (the obvious solution of investing in more servers excluded),

Fire sale at HE on used Cisco core router equipment
[url]
I wonder if some data center will purchase it just to hook it up for the flashing lights... would be quite impressive.
Wait a second, that was already done in North Atlanta and Las Vegas, wasnt it?
I wonder why HE didnt donate it to the tech museum in San Jose... would have been a better write off then selling it.
why I am musing so far off topic on a gorgeous Sunday morning?

I am working on building another hosting companies which I will be hosting VPSs as well.
I am asking this from a customers opion.
with each plan should it be an = shared amount of the processor or should each person have a dedicated amount? For example say you got duel quadcore processors running 3ghz which would = like 24ghz total correct? Say you have 16 VPS on 1 server each getting roughly 1.5Ghz.

Ive done a few whois searches on some of our competitors websites. In the registrar details it has our competitors name as the Registrar and as the nameservers. How can we do this? so for example if someone did a whois on our clients websites, they would see something like this:
Registrar:
OurCompany Ltd [Tag = OurCompany]
Name servers:
ns1.OurCompany.co.uk
ns2.OurCompany.co.uk
Do we need our own nameservers and dedicated server? We've just bought an account with openSRS so we buy our domains through them (if that makes a difference).
