Does Anyone Know Where I Might Find Dell Rack Wire Hooks

Dec 27, 2008

I am calling to all the Dell 4210 Rack owners. I got one and it had some nice wire hooks in the back, but it only came with 6. 3 on each side. I tried asking Dell if they sell extras but they had no idea what I was talking about. They have to buy them from somewhere.

Here are some pictures of the hooks I am talking about. Does anyone know where I can pick up some more of them?

Hooks-PC.com - My Review

Oct 25, 2008

Here's my Review on Hooks-PC.com where I bought my second VPS I ever owned:

I found them in the Webhosting Offers Section, offering a VPS at a very low price. I got curious and gave it a shot, since I had nothing to loose (Just $3).

After signing up, my VPS got setup very quickly. Just within 15 minutes everything was up and running. They supported me with setting up the nameservers at GoDaddy via their live support system and everything went well.

After 2 days I noticed the server was quite slow... In HyperVM the CPU speed was listed as "0.4 Ghz" which is pretty darn slow.

The next day I got a mail to inform all clients that they would be doing maintence the next day.. What they didn't do was put all emailadresses in the CC form but just in the TO form, so now I could exactly see how many clients they had and their email addresses... I counted them... 5 clients total...

Anyway, I asked them how long would it be down ? 15 mins to 1 hour.

Alright no problem, maintenence has to be done so just do it.

I monitor all my websites with UptimeDog which pings my website every 2 minutes... however after 24 hours I still hadn't recorded a single minute of downtime. So I head over tot their website to contact support. I asked them if maintenence had been committed. They said yes... odd because I didn't expierence any downtime !

The next day I woke up I got 5 mails form Uptimedog saying my site was up/down/up/down/up... so I guess that's the maintenece ? Why were they lying that it had been done but it wasn't ? Maybe because they are resellers ? Yes that must be it and also explains why their HyperVM panel is not hosted on their domain but on another wierd domainname "worldofcomputing"

Anyway, the day after that I got mail that my VPS was down again... and it never came up.. 3 Days later (today) my VPS is still down. They don't reply on their live support system and their ticket system is broken. They are again (for the 3rd time so far !)

changing their website design and the contact us link is also broken.. Way to go !

Overall Hooks-PC is just a company runned by a few kiddos (see google cache of crew page) who try to make some quick cash but don't have the knowledge (and gear) to do what they promise. They might be enthousiastic but enthousiastic doesn't convert itself into uptime....

High Density Rack/colocation (~10 KW/rack)

Dec 6, 2007

With all the high power servers/blade servers, the 40A (@ 110V) power limit is way too small. I am wondering if there is any colo space targeted for high density application, e.g. with 10 KW/cab limit for 60A @ 208V power drops. Does anybody know of such high density colocation space? East coast is preferred.

Dell Drives In A RAID Array With Non-Dell Drives

Sep 14, 2009

I have a couple of Dell 1950s and in one of them, I have 2x Seagate 15K.5s that I purchased through Dell and I also have a spare sitting in my rack in case one goes bad, also from Dell.

I was going to be repurposing one of my other 1950s and was going to get two more 15K.5s for it, but wasn't planning on getting them through Dell (rip off?). This way, could still keep the same spare drive around in case a drive went bad in that system as well.

When I was talking to my Dell rep recently when purchasing another system, their hardware tech said you can't use non-Dell drives with Dell drives in the same RAID array because of the different firmware between them.

Anyone know if it is true? Anyone have any experience with using drives from Dell in conjunction with the same model drives from a third party retailer?

Using Find Command With Regex To Find All Number-only Filenames

Oct 15, 2007

how can i do a search for all files (probs using regex) of files consisting purely of numbers?

for e.g. find:

53243.php
24353.php
24098.php

(always have 5 numbers).

seems one of my accounts has had some script run which generated a bunch of these in various subfolders, and the php file basically does a callback to www3.rssnews.ws and www3.xmldata.info, which seem to be some sort of spyware servers.

HP And DELL

Oct 2, 2007

why don't you buy servers from big guys like HP and DELL? Are they too expensive, or servers are not as good as suposed to be, or something else?

Our company is buying all our computers and printers from HP, we are receiving great customer service, waranty, if something gets wrong - we had computer replaced-no problem!

Maybe some small local guys are selling cheaper and better equipment, but I have peace of mind.

Thanks To Rack 911

Sep 27, 2007

I woke up to a complaint by the ISP of spamming for one of our servers. More than 10 000 spams in a shared hosting environment. Found Steven online, thank God! PM him and he went to work looking for the culprit. He spend time monitoring and putting in scripts to catch the culprit and in no time found the faulty script causing the spams.

Really saved me a big headache on how to explain to the ISP. Thanks to the consistent excellent work done by Steven of Rack911.

Those unpatched forums of clients can really be a hassle and a big source of problems.

Supermicro // Dell // HP

Jul 22, 2009

I know this topic has been brought up before and I wanted to revisit this again. We are a growing hosting company looking to expand our Dedicated server offerings. So far, we have been renting servers and reselling but now we have begun colocating our equipment and are looking for hardware vendors.

Would you recommend us to...

...build our own servers using the Supermicro platform?
...purchase pre-built servers from Dell?
...purchase pre-build servers from HP?

Pricing is of major concern along with speed to provision new orders. Although we don't have a dedicated resource for putting together servers, this is something we can look into should the volume of orders increase. Scalability and Flexibility is a MUST

Thanks for chiming in...

Dell, HP Or SuperMicro

May 30, 2009

The technical level in our org is quite low.

We would like some advice on the difference between

1. Supermicro PDSML-LN2
[url]

2. DELL PowerEdge R200
[url]

3. HP Proliant DL120
[url]

Some web hosts here in Singapore are leasing them at comparable rates.

Our research shows that the Dell and HP are comparable and the SuperMicro appears to be in a different (lower) class.

How can the servers be leased at comparable rates if they are from different classes?

Dell Vs. Supermicro

Apr 26, 2007

configuration on Supermicro hardware and dell hardware, the pricing is pretty much the same 100+/- so thats not an issue.

But I am having a hard time to decide if I should go with supermicro or dell.

But here are the points which I have in mind.

- As far as dell goes, there is a central place for support, for example, if I have any issues, I know who to call exactly and get the issue solved, no resellers involved. If I go with supermicro and buy the hardware from a 3rd party, I dont know who to go to for support say a Motherboard fails or if I have any other questions, should I ask Supermicro themselves or the reseller?

- Has a DRAC card which I've heard is much more powerful than IPMI and I've heard Supermicro has no hardware for remote management as powerful as DRAC, I dont know how true that is.

- If I need any parts I know where I have to go to order them and what exactly to order since they have specific parts for specific server models, I dont know about supermicro.

I know, most of my points are benefiting Dell. But I've heard from the research that Supermicro hardware use less power and have less hard drive failures than Dell Servers, I dont know how true that is.

Private Rack

Mar 12, 2008

Our server count with The Planet only seems to be increasing as of late and I'm now starting to drive myself nuts with bandwidth counts, costs, etc.

My main concern at the moment is our total bandwidth. While we might have a server with a 2500GB limit only use 50% we might have a 1500GB limit use 200%. I understand that any overages are our own fault, etc but there must be a way for us to combine all bandwidth across all servers!

Is it possible for The Planet or any of the other big boys to provide private racks with pooled bandwidth without going colo?

Rack Monitors

Mar 25, 2008

I honestly dont understand why does DELL, HP and others price their 1U TFT monitors at 3 times the cost of the cheapest laptop?

I mean, dont get me wrong, I am all for spending good money to get quality products but I feel very awkward spending 3 times as much for a screen and keyboard when I can get their laptops WITH OS, MEMORY AND HDD for 3 times as less and use it as the 1U TFT monitors.

I can get a powerful server from Dell and HP at that price for crying out loud.

But then again, I might be seriously overlooking something here because what justifies such high price?

Own DNS Server In Rack

Apr 26, 2008

We have about 50 Cpanel servers in our own AS with two upstream providers. On the cpanel servers we use the following IPs in the /etc/resolv.conf:

1. IP of the cpanel server

2. DNS IP of the 1st upstreamprovider

3. DNS IP of the 2nd upstreamprovider

I realized, that the upstreampoviders nameserver are not answering that fast and therefore I was thinking to make my own DNS Server, which I could use additionaly after the IP of the cpanel server.

Is this a good idea or is it not necessary? If it is a good idea, which dns deamon would be recommended? If we build this server, maybe would be also nice if we could offer DNS as a single service. Is there any solution where we could create user accounts where user could manage there own dns zones?

How To Use U320 On A 1U Rack

Apr 20, 2007

I´m having a problem right now. I need to buy a Dual Xeon system, to use 2 Quad Cores, however there are some things I need:

- I already have a SCSI controller (Dell Perc 4 (PCIe))

- I already have HD´s (3x SCSI U320)

- I want to use RAID5

- The chassis must be 1U

... my problem is that I never worked with SCSI U320, just SATA and SAS. I usually buy Tyan racks, more specifically, this one: Tyan Tank GT20 5381

It doesn´t have the option for SCSI U320, however they sell SCSI Backplanes that are compatible with this barebone. My question is:

- How do I connect a standalone card (like the one I have) to the backplane? Is there any SCSI connector on the backplane?

- Since space is a bit of a problem in 1U racks, are there any kind of cables that can do more tight turns inside the case?

40 Amps In A Rack
