Dell Powerconnect 6224 Reboot´s When Use ISCSI

May 15, 2009

I´m running a Dell Powerconnect 6224 with firmware 2.2.0.3 for a customer.

After upgrade to firmware 2.2.0.3 from the version 2.0.0.12, and starting to use ISCSI with link aggregation groups, the switch began to reboot every 2-3 days.
Now, i have disabled LAG and this issue also happen.

It could be a firmware problem? Really, with firmware 2.0.0.12 it was solid as rock but without a advanced usage such as vlan, link aggregation, IP routing...

I´m not sure if my customer would like pay more and choose a more stable switch such as Cisco Catalyst...

Dell 6224 Feedback

Sep 7, 2007

As I mentioned in a previous thread, I'm doing research on Foundry alternatives and one of the leading contenders to replace our FESX 424s is the Dell Power Connect 6224.

I've read a couple case studies and gone through the tech specs, etc., but I'd like to hear some real-world feedback from anyone that has deployed the 6224(or 6248) on their network, especially in a data center environment. How well has the switch performed when taxed, how well does it operate in a multi-vendor environment, and so on?

Dell PowerConnect 2724

Jan 22, 2008

I just got this managed switch and I've got it to work, no doubt. It's getting ips from my 100mbps router, which is 12.11.0.1/24.

1. How do I access the web-based managed switch? I can't find anywhere in my router under the "attached device" menu...

2. My switch is 1gbps, but not my router. My servers connected to the switch also have 1gbps nic cards, can it do 1gbps between servers (internally) or it's limited to 100mbps because of the router?

ISCSI Vs AoE

ISCSI Or NFS For Project

Aug 10, 2009

we are setting up a couple of servers for a clients application which will have 2 x 1U application servers running XenServer 5.5 and one NFS or iSCSI server (Dell 2950, Raid 10) running ether just Linux with NFS or Openfiler with iSCSI.

Would there be any benefit in running iSCSI vs. NFS considering their is no iSCSI accelerator and this is just a regular Server ?

NFS is simple but is it's performance really that much different than iSCSI in this scenario?

The network will be used by up to 12 user.

ISCSI With Virtuozzo

I'm colo'ing, so this wouldn't be shared with anyone else.

I'm looking at using iscsi with Virtuozzo Containers, and while the setup for the hardware nodes seems fairly straightforward, can anyone comment on their own experiences using iscsi with VZ?

Did you find your experience reliable? Slow? Any information will be useful.

Also, did you have a hard time setting things up? Or did VZ just manage everything as if it was still on a single server?

Low Cost ISCSI SAN

Jul 27, 2007

Thinking of putting together a ISCSI box with 14 sata II 750's, 3Ware sata controller (raid 6) and Intel quad port gigabit card ganged together for 4 gig transfer and tieing it all together with Open-E ISCSi or DSS module.

Anyone done something similar with good (or bad) results? Thing of using this for hosting web sites primarily as well as some storage for mail server and some databases. Servers running raid 1 and using MS iscsi initiator. Have a vlan setup just for iscsi traffic in my 48 port gigabit switch.

Are the TOE cards better to have or is the MS Initiator good enough. Plan on using the second NIC on the servers solely for ISCSI transfer.

EqualLogic PS5000 ISCSI SAN

Has anyone here tried the Dell/EqualLogic PS5000 series iSCSI SANs? Any opinions on them? I'm looking to use two in a VMWare ESX cluster.

Also, does anyone have any more specific pricing than the 'starting at $19,000' that's been banded around the internet? I have an EqualLogic sales person visiting my offices in a week but would ideally like to get some rough pricing before then (eg: the price difference between SAS and SATA). Trying to get prices out of Dell hasn't been easy so far.

ISCSI As Shared Storage

Feb 6, 2008

I setup an iSCSI target and two iSCSI initiators but I am having some trouble sharing the storage.

I partitioned the drive when I used the first initiator, a 1TB partition, I mounted it without any issues, it showed up in df -h.

Now I went to mount the iSCSI target on the second initiator, I mounted it fine, the partition I made on the first initiator was recognized on this one, however when I add files to either or, the changes aren't recognized on the other initiator. Any ideas why this might be?

I put 1GB of files in one initiator and I ran the df -h command on the other, and it still had the same amount of free space.

ISCSI As Centralized Hosting - Performance

Feb 2, 2008

I´m thinking about using a centralized hosting solution, in order to achieve better redundance and performance while having more room to expand if necessary. In order to achieve this, I was thinking about implementing a storage server, and use a software to provide iSCSI target capabilities.

As storage server, I was thinking about using HP DL320s ( URL ), loaded with 12 147GB SAS HD´s 15K RPM. I will make some tests to understand the real difference between RAID5 and RAID10, concerning write speed. Also, I´m not sure if the controller provided with this server is good enough to provide a reliable operation.

For switching, I will use HP 2824 or 2848 Gigabit switch, and use port trunk in order to join both NIC controllers of the storage server.

As iSCSI target software, I still don´t know wich one to use. I think FalconStor would be a good bet, however it seems to be a bit expensive. Any good alternative?

This storage server would be used to provide storage for about 10 "regular" hosting servers, that have, at the moment, regular dual 10K SATA Drives (Raptor) in RAID1. I'm afraid the 2x Gigabit ports aren´t enough, even considering that I will not have intensive sequential reads / writes, but random acceses.

Dell Drives In A RAID Array With Non-Dell Drives

Sep 14, 2009

I have a couple of Dell 1950s and in one of them, I have 2x Seagate 15K.5s that I purchased through Dell and I also have a spare sitting in my rack in case one goes bad, also from Dell.

I was going to be repurposing one of my other 1950s and was going to get two more 15K.5s for it, but wasn't planning on getting them through Dell (rip off?). This way, could still keep the same spare drive around in case a drive went bad in that system as well.

When I was talking to my Dell rep recently when purchasing another system, their hardware tech said you can't use non-Dell drives with Dell drives in the same RAID array because of the different firmware between them.

Anyone know if it is true? Anyone have any experience with using drives from Dell in conjunction with the same model drives from a third party retailer?

Supermicro // Dell // HP

Jul 22, 2009

I know this topic has been brought up before and I wanted to revisit this again. We are a growing hosting company looking to expand our Dedicated server offerings. So far, we have been renting servers and reselling but now we have begun colocating our equipment and are looking for hardware vendors.

Would you recommend us to...

...build our own servers using the Supermicro platform?
...purchase pre-built servers from Dell?
...purchase pre-build servers from HP?

Pricing is of major concern along with speed to provision new orders. Although we don't have a dedicated resource for putting together servers, this is something we can look into should the volume of orders increase. Scalability and Flexibility is a MUST

Thanks for chiming in...

Dell, HP Or SuperMicro

We would like some advice on the difference between

1. Supermicro PDSML-LN2

2. DELL PowerEdge R200

3. HP Proliant DL120

Some web hosts here in Singapore are leasing them at comparable rates.

Our research shows that the Dell and HP are comparable and the SuperMicro appears to be in a different (lower) class.

How can the servers be leased at comparable rates if they are from different classes?

Dell Vs. Supermicro

Apr 26, 2007

configuration on Supermicro hardware and dell hardware, the pricing is pretty much the same 100+/- so thats not an issue.

But I am having a hard time to decide if I should go with supermicro or dell.

But here are the points which I have in mind.

- As far as dell goes, there is a central place for support, for example, if I have any issues, I know who to call exactly and get the issue solved, no resellers involved. If I go with supermicro and buy the hardware from a 3rd party, I dont know who to go to for support say a Motherboard fails or if I have any other questions, should I ask Supermicro themselves or the reseller?

- Has a DRAC card which I've heard is much more powerful than IPMI and I've heard Supermicro has no hardware for remote management as powerful as DRAC, I dont know how true that is.

- If I need any parts I know where I have to go to order them and what exactly to order since they have specific parts for specific server models, I dont know about supermicro.

I know, most of my points are benefiting Dell. But I've heard from the research that Supermicro hardware use less power and have less hard drive failures than Dell Servers, I dont know how true that is.
