I fear i've made a terrible mistake.
I'm currently a Poundhost customer and have been very happy with the service - my server has never been down yet and i've never had to contact them since setting the server up - it just works.
However, i've recently been offered a much better deal from Rapidswitch - a better server for quite a bit cheaper which as a personal customer with no budget makes a big difference.
I did think twice about moving from a provider I was happy with but have heard good things about Rapidswitch and their control panel is much better.
However, since placing my order it seems all they've had is network problems - they were completely down for hours last night, have had problems all day and are now down again. To boot, they said my server would be built in 24hrs and probably less but it's now nearly 30hrs and hasn't been built yet.
I'm really surprised and shocked that such a big provider with a good reputation has a single point of failure like this and doesn't have redundancy built in as well as hot swap spares and even spares from another provider.
It also seems their site and phone system are on the same backbone so that all went down too (and seems their monitoring is within their network so that doesn't register most of the outages).
Have I made a terrible mistake and this is the new Rapidswitch now it's been bought out or do you think it's just a bad week and they will get themselves sorted out and will return to 100% uptime?
Thoughts?

I have a big problem with this company. check this ticket:
Quote:
Hi Marco,
I am sorry to inform you, but the data center screwed up and reformatted your server and reinstalled Windows. They misunderstood what we were telling them. We were talking about another server. I apologise and am seeing what I can do.

I've been a VPS customer of carpathia host since 2004, since the days of prohosters.
On July 1 i ticketed them to remove a whole list of domains and sub domains (around 15 of them) providing the list of domains clearly that needed to be removed
At the end of the day i/we notice that our main corporate website which was also hosted in the same VPS is down. Logging into the CP i see the domain of the corporate website itself is not seen in the list of available hosted websites.
I re-open my previous ticket mentioning the problem , i get a response that the corporate website was also removed by mistake and they would restore it now
After a few mins, i get another reply that they don't have a backup of the lost domain (which they were supposed to have but was accidentally overwritten by something called emergency backup system, i don't know what is this so called emergency backup system).
So they re-add the domain, and i upload the site with the backup which we had and thought that the problems were over, BUT till date they have problems configuring the corporate website they hosted properly or there is some issue with their DNS. When i and several others visit my corporate website site.com, we get to see subdomain.site.com.
site.com sits in a dedicated ip and subdomain.site.com sits in a separate dedicated ip. When we ping site.com we get reply from ip of subdomain.site.com. When ticketed about this problem, they say that it should be a problem with the browser cache and not able to give any satisfying reply. How can it be a browser cache issue when the ping is getting reply from the wrong IP?
I am so frustrated with the negligent act of removing the wrong site and their sluggishness of not solving the problem which they themselves created.
Just wondering if its the time to switch to better providers? we have lost so much already with people not being able to access the sites and been put to shame by clients calling us and telling that there is something wrong with our site.

I'm trying to use SSH to delete a directory. It won't delete via FTP.
I've tried variations of the below but nothing seems to work;
rm -f [folder]
rm /-f [folder]
the directory that should be deleted is test.crossroadsclub.net, so I use that as the folder.

Question: Is it safe to delete the files in /var/log/mysql ? Also, is there some way I can disable logging so that this folder does not get filled up again?
Explanation:
Last night I started running a Perl script to process the data contained in some files, and then do a series of INSERTs to put them in a MySQL database. When I checked on it this morning, I found that it was very close to being done, but had locked up. I had trouble doing anything at all, actually, until I realized that 100% of the disk space on my hard drive had now been used. I went to investigate, and I quickly realized that my /var/log/mysql folder was over 120GB!
My intuition tells me that this folder is just used to store logs of what MySQL is doing. However, I have no need for these logs, and seeing as they are (unnecessarily) using over 120GB of my hard drive space, I would like to delete everything in that folder. But I'm still fairly new to Linux, and I'm not sure if this is safe. Can I just delete these files? And also, to prevent this from happening again, is there some way I can disable MySQL from creating such enormous log files?

I have a cronjob that is still entered in my server, but due to my own lack of knowledge i deleted the domain from my server without removing the cronjob and now i keep getting the emails from my server
Code:
/bin/sh: line 1: /home/userID_Removed/public_html/cgi-bin/script-removed/cron.cgi: No such file or directory
I just need to know how to remove the cronjob via SSH, i logged in as Root to my SSH and then did crontab -l and I see the two cronjobs I want to remove, but can't find the code to do so anywhere via Google.
There is 3 total that I want to remove but there is about 10 cronjobs setup there so i want to remove those three and make sure the other 7 stay running as they should.

I came in here a couple days back looking for a reliable, powerful, and well priced VPS. I went through a couple companies and one of the first that I really seriously considered was Zone.net.
It's really all about first impressions and zone.net wins this. Their site looks great and definitely made a good impression on me. I had some questions about hosting a Debian VPS; they answered them quickly and completely. Their support is first-class and very personable. I waited on hold for less than a minute, and was instantly directed to a very knowledgeable agent.
After setting up my VPS, I can tell you that my sites get some good traffic and zone.net is handling it all great. Their bandwidth is fast, their servers are first class, and they're definitely the kind of host everybody should have.
I've been through many other hosts in search of a decent VPS and I definitely will be staying with zone.net for a while. I'm not affiliated at all with them, just a very satisfied customer. If you're thinking of opening something with them and would like an honest, third party opinion, don't hesitate to PM me.

I just wanted to take a minute to express how happy I am with my new VPS from Zone.net.
There was a minor delay getting my VPS set up and they were upfront and gave me a good credit for it. This is rare in this day and age and I felt I should share how well they communicated.
So far the VPS is screaming and hosting my 3 sites without breaking a sweat.
Ill post a week or month report as I get time. This site helped me find Zone.net, so some more good feedback can't hurt. :-)

I am currently transferring from a VPS to a dedicated server.
After you have made the transition, do you delete everything on your previous server? Or can I expect that everything be deleted anyway when my subscription runs out?
I bring this up because there sometimes is sensitive data stored there (ie. databases with personal info) and I'm wondering how much I should delete. Obviously I'll get rid of the DBs, but what about essential stuff like the operating system?

and its file.
i tried del c: emp*.*
but that didn't work and if i try rmdir c emp, it removed c: emp directory or maybe i'm not looking hard enough.
basically i want to copy a folder with many subdirectory under it, zip it up the folder and delete all the subfolder and the files in the subfolder but not the parent folder where it store all temp data.
i already got xcopy and zipping work but i can't seem to figure out how to remove all the folder inside the parent folder without deleting the parent folder.
i'm creating a batch file to run this task.
