Moving From CPanel, And Maybe Softlayer
Oct 29, 2009
I've finally decided to move from relying on cPanel so much to managing php/mysql/apache on my own, but I have a problem... I host a few people on my server ... Not a lot, but enough to justify some type of cPanel-ish system for their domains. Is there anything free that allows them to manage their emails, FTP accounts, database, etc. while allowing me to manage the server's software? Something that lets me manage the vhosts easily would be great too, but not required.
Since I'm moving off of cPanel, and from CentOS->Debian as a result, I'm going to just buy a new server - however I'm not sure if I want to stick with SoftLayer. They're an amazing company, have great support, great hardware, I've never experienced ANY downtime with them... But I'm paying a bit of a premium - are there any alternatives with the same quality level but a bit cheaper? Even $5-10 cheaper would be fine. I'm looking to switch to a server that's a dualcore, 2gb ram, and at least 1.5tB of bandwidth - I'd rather not pay more than $155/month for that but I'm willing to go up to $200/month (Assuming the hardware and bandwidth scale).
It'd be GREAT if I could get the hardware I listed with a 10mbit unmetered for under $240/month... But, how realistic is that? Softlayer's 10mbit unmetered is $100/month.
I'd also love to be able to build my own server and colo it somewhere, but... So far all the prices I've found don't pay off until you're paying $6-700/month, so that's not looking too good - especially if I have to spend another $4-500 on the server itself.

i have stopped hosting selling and am only hosting 2 sites for clients that I have designed sites for.
if i got a vps with lxadmin, would these clients be able to have their own individual free control panels and also would I be able to transfer their entire site, inc. mailboxes and MySQL Databases?

i have a dedicated server. Centos 5.3 /Cpanel
2 reseller accounts on it: acc1 and acc2.
acc1 has ns1.domain.tld and ns2.domain.tl nameservers set up
acc2 has ns3.domain.tld and ns4.domain.tl nameservers set up
now i want to move an account (customer.tld) from acc2 to acc1 without downtime.
how can i do this provided i can not have customer.tld both on acc1 and acc2 on the same server?
here's what i did:
1. changed customer.tld nameservers to have ns1.domain.tld, ns2.domain.tld, ns3.domain.tld, ns4.domain.tld then waited for 48 hours for the changes to propagate
2. changed the customer.tld owner in WHM from acc2 to acc1
3. changed the cpanel package from acc2_package ti acc1_package
4. changed the IP in WHM for the account from ns3 IP to ns1 IP
5. changed the DNS entries in WHM ns3 changed to ns1 on all instances found there
but i still have a downtime period now. everything looks fine in httpd.conf thou

I have about 20 gigs of pictures that I have already uploaded to my server, but they're just sitting there in a directory listing tree.
How can I import all of those pictures into, say Coppermine or 4images or the like, without having to do each one manually?

I am moving my accounts soon from my VPS which I have root access to and was wondering if anyone could tell me what I need to do, to the DNS.
As last time I did this I had to edit the DNS Zone, by editting one of the following: refresh , retry , expire , minimum ttl but can not remember which one or to what.
Then I changed the IP address to the new server.

I have several sites under a cPanel/WHM reseller account. I want to move the biggest site under this account to another host. This site is the main site for the reseller account. The user name associated with it is my account name with the host, and all the other sites on that account are shown in WHM to be owned by it.
After I have the site running on the new host, I want to delete it from the old one. How can I do this whilst still retaining access to WHM which is only accessible through the cPanel of this site?

P.S. please consider me as an uneducated person .. my background is designing not programming or network administration.

My clients in LA - those on AT&T and Time Warner in paticular - are having bad download speeds from my server with Softlayer. Anyone else having similar trouble? Clients who normally get 500-700kb/s down are getting < 50 kb/s down, even early in the morning when the total traffic on my 100mbps port is under 1.5mbps.
Basically, east coast is fine, and anyone with a T1 in LA is fine as well - it's just DSL and Cable modems in LA that are screwed up. In fact, one of our are clients is using Apple Remote Desktop to connect to a remote client with a T1; it's faster to through Time Warner, then VPN to Verizon, and then connect Softlayer and back again than to go directly from Time Warner to Softlayer, which is really weird.
