Cisco Switches - Traffic Shaping Required
Jun 9, 2008
I was checking out the switch products from Cisco and I noticed that there is quite a few products that been discounted, and I am trying to find correct switches that does traffic shaping on port for inbound and outbound.
I preferred they are 48 ports with 2 Gigabit uplinks, with Enterprise L3 image and it is little difficult to find the correct older models that is being sold on ebay to pick up the correct one.
I am also open to Extreme and Foundry switches as well, but I rather like to stick to one type for deployment, since I am working on the plan to deploy 2 core switches which all edge switches will hook into it.

Is there such a switch?
Do cisco do a 24 port 1000Mbs switch that you can control each port speed through a web based software?

I've got a LAN setup that share an internet connection with some friend but unfortunately we have a "Limit" we can download per day.
One of my friend's seems to enjoy downloading movies day in day out till we reach our cap.
Now I know ingress shaping doesn't change the fact that we are gonna reach our cap earlier but it might discourage him for downloading as much.
how can I shape his traffic to say 50KB/s both in and out for just an IP (so it doesn't affect the rest of us ?)

I just got a quote from a colocation provider but they said their standard policy was to customise traffic shaping for each customer..
The term "traffic shaping" on a server screams "bad idea" to me..
Being honest, my knowledge of shaping is limited.. but I don't want traffic shaping on my cable connection nevermind my server.

we are a small shop...
Not looking to buy another switch but we have a crapshoot of switches around. Dell 5448,
HP 2910 and a Cisco 3560.
I'd like to keep the the Cisco back in HQ stock since it's a POE switch.
We are colocating just 1 SAN intially. Max of maybe 7-8 Servers total in the future. Not alot of bandwidth and doing L2 traffic only. Any issues with either the Dell or HP in the colo environment from a production standpoint. We have used a couple of Procurves in our environment, and the dell switches were freebies that were part of our last order.
Basically, it would look like this
ASA5510 serving as main headed VPN
2 Branch Offices connecting to it
One L2 Switch. 2 - 3 Seperate Vlans with a trunk port back out to the ASA5510

I am just in the process of setting up a new rack for some lower end clients.
At present we have both a local (National) and international traffic split. We need to offer our clients a 100/100 port speed on the national route/bgp/ip range but only a set amount on the international range. The port speed/throughput for international traffic would need to be as low as 128k/128k.
I would also like to have the flexibility to impose data limits on the international link as apposed to bandwidth shaping.
I have a spare Cisco 3750G-48TS I was hoping to utilize for the main switch on this rack (SFP Ports for multiple uplinks, National/International)
Hardware/Server wise what will be the easiest way to achieve this?

Is there a way to use traffic shaping in Linux? Like limit traffic to certain port, set priorities etc. Like ex: I'd want to set FTP to use max of 1mbps, http max of 80mbps, and set total to 90mbps.
Also is there ways to setup dos protection within linux? What I'd basically want is if it detects a dos, it either turns off the server, or does some other action that would cut it off either until I take action or for a set amount of time. Think turning off would be only solution since if I just drop packets I'd still be paying for that traffic.
Basically I want to ensure that if I get a DoS I'm not stuck paying insane bandwidth overcharges. I rather have a few days of downtime to deal with, then a few thousand dollars to pay and me having to declare bankruptcy and sell property etc...

Currently we are using D-link 3026 and 3028 switches (Layer 2 switch) for our bandwidth shaping and mrtg graph.
But it seems unstable, etc sometime it might congest due to unknown reason, even though the particular server is not fully utilize their bandwidth yet.
So we decide to plug in our Linksys SFE2000 (Layer 3 switch) and everything goes smooth once again. But, we never really setup the linksys switch yet.
Can anyone recommend us what kind of switches we should use, is the best choice for bandwidth shaping / QOS for the amount of less than $ 600?

I am building an advanced network in a big building which will be used by desktop/printers and backend thin servers, which requires high-available network and consume high bandwidth all this thru categorie 6 cables (RJ-45).
The idea is to build different path with optical fibers and to connect each part of the building with it's own optical fiber to the server room (where we run Microsoft company network servers, SAN, backup, and external access) using a 10/100/1000 switch and optical fiber for long distance.
So I though about using switches which have at least :
48 ports 10/100/1000 (auto negociation)
4 ports 10 gE
for now I will not use many features but with time I could create some trunk, and use some advanced *routing* (switching) features.
As the budget is also not unlimited, I thought about buying :
Edge switch :
§ HP ProCurve 2900-48G J9050A [url]
with X2 extension HP ProCurve 10-GbE X2-SC SR Optic J8436A [url]
Core switch :
§ HP ProCurve 6400cl J8433A [url]
As I am studying any network vendor (but not such as 3com, netgear, dlink, linksys), but more such as HP, Extreme, Cisco, Foundry I am opended to your model ideas for me needs!

I am in the market for some new switches and I was going to buy some HP stuff, but a friend of mine recommended 3com....their prices are dirt cheap....any experience with them?
Does anyone have any words to compare and contrast the two based on experience?

I just stumbled across mention of bonding two NICs to serve as one. (E.g., 100Mbps NIC + 100Mbps NIC = 'virtual' 200 Mbps NIC, as far as everything on the network is concerned.)
I'd been familiar with the concept for quite some time, but I guess I never really thought it through until just now...
How does this work with switches? It seems to me that the answer should be a flat, "It doesn't." But it seems that it does work. How does the switch merrily map an IP to two different ports? Do the two NICs maintain their MACs? (Wouldn't two MACs to one IP cause even more problems?)

to buy some more Layer 3 switches but I'd like to get ipv6 support. I like the Cisco 3550 but it does not support ipv6.
Can someone recommend a switch in the same price range (less than $1400 for 48 ports) that supports ipv6? This will be used for connecting to customer servers.

basic layer2 10G, most everything out there has more advanced L3 features which is fine but aren't nessecary, they maybe used at some point in the future.
Currently looking at the cisco 4900M as it appears to be very cost effective at ~$10k/ for the chassis w/8 port 10gb base, + xenpack cost and it isn't a very costly piece of gear.

We're ready to setup 3-4 42U racks for servers and are in need of choosing Ethernet switches. What do you guys use and why?
I'm looked at Cisco switches, but lost in their product forest. I'm looked at Express 500, 2960 and 3750-E models. Is there any more difference (in exception of stacking, cli and hot-swap fan/psu) that I need to consider? Prices differentiate too much.
I'm also looked at Linksys/D-Link business products and they seems to have the same features as Cisco Express series, but only 50% cheaper.

I had the chance to work with the summit24 switches, and I personally liked them. It is straight-forward in my opinion for the Web Interface compared to others I have seen and the pricing seems to be reasonable.
I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with any of their switching devices.

I am just wondering, does CentOS 5.2 (With cPanel) require Python, or is it not required so I can delete it without any problems caused?

I moved a web site i developed from shared hosting at fasthosts due to performance issues and beacause I needed a more flexible platform.
I decided to go with webfusion as i'd seen them in the press everywhere.
Everything was working fine and performance was good - however the emails sent from the site (worked fine on shared hosting)- using php mail bounced. was getting ...
<sal@goldplateuk.com>:
213.171.216.118 does not like recipient.
Remote host said: 550 <anonymous@lvps212-241-216-214.vps.webfusion.co.uk>:
Sender address rejected: Domain not found
Giving up on 213.171.216.118.
However - sending to a hotmail address would work.
I referred to support - first line said they'd have to talk to second line support and get back to me.
Eventually - they called back and basically said everything looks ok on the server - they don't know why it's happening - do some analysis of your own - go on google.
Generally support isn't too hot - 2 days for a reply on a ticket. To cut a long story short -
does anyone know of a VPS host who would know what was wrong and would be able to help someone who is new to the VPS scene as i need to move host fast as the customer wants this resolved asap.
£25/month top budget.

I'm having some serious issues.. I moved to a new dedicated server company and found out that the IP block I was on was blacklisted with 5 anti-spam lists.
However, the company is great and they have managed to get the IP block out of every single black list.
However, I am still having issues. My server does not seem to be listed on any blacklists but emails sent out to various places, get bounced back with the following types of errors.
Any suggestions or advice? Any server administrators who think they can fix this? Please PM me with your quote.

We are an established owner of three data centres outside of London. We are looking at either a half or full lockable rack in either Global Switch 1 or 2 (ideally with 24/7 managed hands) in order to terminate a backhaul circuit there.
We are also interested in a similar arrangement in TH-E.
We only require around 2 amps as the space will only house an edge router and switch for inter/cross connects.

How much down time can I expect during the change over period?
