Cheap/Reliable IP Remote Reboot (+KVM A Plus)
Jul 3, 2008
What is a good value IP remote rebooter? Looking for one I can place in a cabinet, hopefully to control 12-16 servers.
It needs to allow me to create users and assign them to manage X ports on. If it has KVM IP it would be a plus.

I usually host my sites on Bluehost but they are a bit expensive. A friend of mine who wants to host a very small site of his not expecting too many viewers, needs a web host which is cheap, reliable and fast..bandwidth is not an issue since he wont need much.
Please suggest some tested options. Which one of the cheaper options are time tested and reliable?

I have a quote from iWeb that is 25% less than other providers (The Planet, GoDaddy, Layered, etc.)... Same server features.
How can that be possible? Does iWeb have the same quality as The Planet?

Friend of mine is starting up a business and is looking for a reliable and fast web host in the UK but also not too expensive around £100/year and maybe 100gb bandwidth not sure on that.
Looked over reviewcentre.com and picked out some high rated ones with more than 5 reviews, however every single one I have read horror stories about elsewhere (including ukfast which seemed so good looking at reviews).
Can someone recommend any decent ones to me who won't screw up payments or have much downtime, with maybe a year or more of being with them? All I need to start is a bit of bandwidth for pretty much one image to start with, uptime and email, already got the domain from domainmonster.

I currently have a decent server that runs around 10 websites, but 1 of those sites contributes around 99% of the total traffic. This large site is being moved onto a new server, leaving the remaining 9 sites rattling around on this big (and expensive!) server.
So, I am now looking for a smaller server to handle the other smaller sites. They get minimal traffic - around 5k uniques a day.

I'm about to launch a viral project that has realy good potential to strike it big, but would like to clear a few things first.
I would not like to have it associated with my name - not that it anything illegal, but in real life I'm doing something completely different and on the record would like to keep it that way.
So that probably means keeping the whois private - but I have another question as well. Suppose the project strikes it big - would a diggin journalist be able to still get my name/data from a hosting company too?
Is there a good hosting company with an all-inclusive service that you could recommend (that would get me a private hosting plan + a private domain name/whois)? And that would be reasonably priced of course + more importanty reliable (note have problems if/when there is a massive traffic surge to my site at one point in time)
Would probably take a shared hosting plan - need only PHP and imagemagick to start with. But again - bit part of my concern is what happens if the project makes it big and there is a lot of traffic - so ideally "unlimited" bandwidth and responsive admins...

Is it possible to use a APC remote reboot power strip for a server in a blade?
Like for example, say there are 16 servers in a blade, can you remote reboot them individually?
Because blade servers have only like 3-4 redundant power supplies and I am assuming all the 16 servers are powered by the onboard power supplies in the blade enclosure. So...if thats the case, how is it possible to reboot each individual server?

Is there a way to remotely use APC remote reboot's features rather than logging into APC control panel and doing it?
Like you know how softlayer and ev1 servers do.
Like write a small php script to access the power strip and execute the orders. May be an API or something.

I'm here to ask a few questions, and hoping any burst resellers/customers can possibly answer them for me.
Q1.) How long do additional Ip's take normally?
Q2.) How long do remote reboot details take normally?
Q3.) Do Staff ever ignore your tickets?
I've been waiting for both Remote/Ip's since Saturday ( was told Friday they would be sent within 24hours) and tickets being ignored by the looks

on remote reboot switches that will allow us to cycle power on two plugs at once for use with servers that have redundant power supplies.
Brands and models welcome. We should also be able to access the units remotely to cycle power.

Any experiences with Supermicro IPMI Card - (AOC-IPMI20-E)? I need basic Power managment like APC reboot ports.
Since its very likely that we will get some Supermicro servers, I thought why not add the IPMI card.

cheap dedicated server for remote backups with at least 200GB hard drive and 100Mbps up/down connection and 1000GB transfer. It would be the best to be in US, but it can also be in Europe if speed from US can be at least 60Mbps.
The best I found is Hetzner (49 eur), but they are in Europe and they have a 99 eur setup fee which is too much for me.
It would be great that it's even cheaper than this, because this Hetzner server have a dual core AMD 5600+ CPU, 2x400GB HDD and 2GB of RAM, so because I don't need all that I was hoping to find even cheaper Celeron or Sempron with 200GB HDD and 512MB or 1GB of RAM in US.

This is probably a dumb question, but I've been curious about something. While shopping around for either a cheap dedicated server (less than $75/mo) or a cheap colo for a 1u server, I have noticed that the cheap dedicated servers are often less than a cheap colo, which seems odd to me since with a colo you bring your own machine.
For example, Sago Networks has cheap dedicateds for $50, $59, $79 etc. yet their cheapest colo option is $99. For Sago's $50 dedicated you get 1000GB transfer and 2 IP's, and with their $99 colo you get only get 100 GB transfer and 1 IP.
And Sago is not unusual in this respect. I've priced other providers that fall into this category and they have similar differences.
So why is colo more expensive than dedicated for similar, if not lower, features?

I have a dedicated server, on Debian Etch.
When I type a command with putty, the connection is closed immediately. I tried shutdown-r now and reboot, halt, do nothing to console closes and nothing happens.
After a hundred connection, I can use ls, su and kill.
I think it's the fact that the partition is corrupted. I can not Hardware reboot the server because CTN1 is "out of business".
Do you know another way to restart the server

VPS isn't rebooting by itself when it goes down. Anyone has any program/script that monitors heartbeat of the server? Like when it goes down, the program will automatically reboots the system. I know there's such a script out there but I forgot what it called.

After a graceful reboot I am having problems with a few things.
First cpsrvd and lfd failed to start, but I fixed it doing this:
rm -f /usr/local/cpanel/cpanel
rm -f /scripts/installgd
rm -f /scripts/cleanmd5
rm -f /scripts/upcp
But next to all the drives it says "No DMA! (Click to Enable)", I click that and it says things:
Quote:
EIDE Hard Drive Optimizations Enabled
/dev/hdc:
setting 32-bit IO_support flag to 1
IO_support = 1 (32-bit)
But after going back to Service Status it still says that.
So I tried to enable it through a command by typing:
sudo hparm -d1 /dev/hdc5
And get this error:
Quote:
/dev/hdc5:
setting using_dma to 1 (on)
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Invalid argument
using_dma = 0 (off)
