Bluesquare/Claranet And NTL/Virgin Media
May 25, 2009
I used to have hosting with Tagadab, who use the clara.net network, which I used to get timeouts for about 10 minutes every 5-6 hours, so I moved to iFuse hosting (in BlueSquare house), where I get exactly the same issue. My ISP is NTL/Virgin Media.

One of my more 'interesting' clients is asking if we can source a dedicated hosting server that we can lease for him that is physically located in the British Virgin Islands (BVIs). Google isn't turning up anything obvious.
Are there any dedicated hosting servers based in the BVIs that are available for rent/lease/purchase?

We want to colocate 1 server with Bluesquare,
It would really help me if someone could tell me roughly how much its going to cost for either
a) 1 server +1.5tb bandwidth
b) Private rack + 1.5tb bandwidth for each server
c) Private Cage + 1.5tb bandwidth for each server.
I can't speak to them till Monday, So this would help me a lot.

Does anyone have experiences of what Poundhost are like to co-locate with?
Are they pretty friendly and fulfilling to your requests? Just wanting some general opinions of what they're like in the ways of co-location. I know their network is pretty solid but I've never co-located.
Wanting to offer some services within the UK but considering I live here myself I was thinking of co-locating rather than renting a server. Always wanted to but a lot easier to do so within the UK rather than the US!

I have never done co-location before and I am very interested in it. Although a fair amount of my questions could be asked to PoundHost I preferred to ask here as I can get opinions too and more elaborate information probably. So if anybody wants to reply with some help, please do!
I am currently looking at Quater Rack Space (10U) at the following URL [url]
The first issue is a switch. The site states "1 x 100Mbit CAT 5 Feed" - I assume I would need to install a switch to share this connection between my servers, what sort of switches am I looking at here - do you have recommendations?
Another issue is power. Is there any typical number of servers I could put online with 3A, as well as my switch? I've actually been looking at buying servers from the USA and having them shipped to me (at [url]). The systems I'm looking at are the Core2Duos (SATA Enterprise and SATA cost effective at the moment). What custom build places would you recommend in the UK? If I did want to increase my power allocation, can PoundHost do this for me?
I was also after some opinions of PoundHost as a company - anyone have experience with their colo? A question I should really ask directly to them, but maybe people already know here: Are they able to increase my IP Address allocation? Can they increase my bandwidth to say, 20Mbit as required?
Are there any other UK colo that can compete with these prices for rack space?
How would their connectivity be to the USA? With my current setup, most of my dedicated servers are in the USA. To people here in Europe connection is fine to the USA. I'm just wondering how this would work in return from the connectivity of BlueSquare.
I was wondering about remote reboots. If I wanted to be able to make my own hard remote reboots instantly, can the likes of APC remote reboot switches be installed into my 10U space? The main problem really is my understanding of power distribution in a data center and how power is fed to my space.
Again - I'm grateful for any replies, feedback or recommendations because I want to ensure I start with a good service and a good company.

This morning BlueSquare/Poundhost sent out an email to all their customers, announcing a special deal to all current customers, that sounds great right? Sure, except the CC'd instead of BCC'd all of their clients in on the email.
Since then everyone who's email address stards with anything up to the letter B - around 100-110 addresses - received an email containing the ****** image with the message
Followed by this from BlueSquare:
Quote:
Earlier today an email was sent out to all customers providing details on a dedicated server special offer. Unfortunately this email was sent out using the CC field and not the BCC field. This was not a breach of security, but a genuine mistake on the part of the sender who was not aware of what had happened until the email had been sent, and as such the sender has been suitably reprimanded.
We realise the seriousness of this error and have now taken automatic steps to ensure this cannot happen again by limiting the maximum recipients on our outgoing mail server to a small number, as well as updating and limiting staff on the use of the mail list system.

I was just wondering if anyone else here uses or has used VPS Media?
I have been with them since Monday and running a Counter-Strike server. So far my experience has been positive. My VPS was up and running within minutes of signing up and they were not hesitant to help me prepare it for CS server.
Now I'm thinking about buying another VPS from them for a web server but I cant decide which distro to pick. I'm familiar with CentOS, is Debian or Fedora much different for running a web server?

Hopefully this will be a quick and fairly simple question. I already have my site hosted with another provider and very, very happy with the service.
However, i want to add video support to my site. However the current provider i use doesnt have the functionality i need (FFMPeg, etc).
So what i am looking for is a reliable host who will store, convert/encode my files and then stream them for a decent prices. As it will be a new feature to my site im not looking at spending a fortune to start with (i know, how many times have you heard that?) but will be happy to upgrade capacity as and when.
Im not interested in fancy cPanels or bogged down features for "Web Hosting" which i will never use. I just need a host that can store, encode and stream my media (i will handle the scripting side. Ideally they would be located within Europe, but thats not 100% nessesary.

Recently I bought a hosting on MediaTemple. My previous site index file is index.php. But when I uploaded my site to MediaTemple it can not see it.
Where can I set default index file for MediaTemple? I need to change it to index.php instead of the index.html.
Please don't redirect me to MT support, they are too slow.

I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a Windows Media Relay. For example, if I have two streams with two different companies. Once stream A is filled up then it will forward to stream B. Or even distribute or just randomly to stream A or B.
I have searched and searched, but nothing seems to work.

I use Virtuozzo with layeredtech, and since I'm on the move anyway, thought I'd like to try out some different Virtualization products before the migration.
Allot of these products like bare-metal installs though... which is why I'm particularly looking for "virtual media" on the KVM.

Quote:
100Mbit Burstable Unmetered Dedicated Server #1
CPU - Pentium E5200 (dual core)
Memory - 2GB RAM
Hard Disk Space - 300GB HDD
According to the package, it's " 100Mbit Burstable Unmetered Dedicated Server "
I plan on hosting only media, (video files). Are these specs enough to support alot of people downloading?
Also, I've never setup this sort of server before - when I go to click on order now it asks me certain preferances.
Quote:
Raid Controller, OS version, Operating system, Control Panel
There is quite a few options to choose from the drop down menu, I have no idea what they mean.
With dedicated server's is it the same as normal vps? Login, upload, Cpanel etc?
Or is there something else to it?
Just need to host media - nothing special.

I manage and develop an e-commerce site which the original designer had put on Media Temple. Their grid service and general marketing looks and sounds superb. This is no doubt why a lot of people go with them.
For months now they have been giving my client problems. People in certain places can't access the site because MT are always up to tricks moving the servers around. On top of that their MySQL performance has latency issues which makes most pages load slowly.
I decided to move the site to Knownhost(vps) who seem to offer good service at a reasonable price.
Before I could even begin to transfer the emails to the new server I get reports that the site has been down for over 24 hours. The site is still down after a whole day. This means my client can't sell their stuff and I can't transfer to the new host either.
I called MT and they offered free hosting for a year. I don't think it's worth it. The uptime and service and performance I've seen has been no better than $5/month shared hosting. For a site like this I don't think it's worth risking uptime (and therefore sales) on a company that can't get their act together. I've never had downtime from any other host before, let alone multiple times like MT.
I'm putting this out there just to warn any people who may be thinking of going to Media Temple.
I would be interested to know others experiences with Media Temple.

I'm really enjoying all the helpful topics that this website has to offer . However, I've still been having trouble deciding on a web host.
I'm planning to make a website that will consist of all different forms of media, (video, audio, photos) and I wanted to know if there were any web hosts out there that specialize in that sort of thing?
Also, I wanted to know if Wordpress was a good choice for someone like me who doesn't have a whole lot of website building skill but wants to make a decent looking site.

my Hosting service (Hostway) offered Windows Media Server at the time. I wanted visitors to have the ability to quickly stream .wma's, so I went for the cost.
now...I'm unemployed; & money is real tight...so, I was thinking of dropping Hostway...going over to GoDaddy; & switching my means of musical delivery to .mp3's.
So:
1) How much slower is mp3 streaming from a conventional server than .wma from a dedicated server?
2) Is there a way to speed it (mp3) up (save decreasing file size)?
3) Will .wma's stream without the dedicated server; & if so...how is that implemented?
I really need to save money in this economy...but I don't want my listeners to suffer. Is that possible?

I found vps media through WHT about a month ago, I saw they allowed several gaming servers on their vpses, and it was interesting to give a CS 1.6 and CS Source a try on a vps.
I signed up using a 20% off special, which is pretty cheap, compared to other xen providers.
I've been really happy with their service, as they are very easy to communicate with, and I love their notifications whenever a scheduled maintenance is due.
Their community is still small, but they're growing little by little, I saw a big spike of people registered in their forums right after a new WHT offer post. Their blog is current, well written and specially good content, mostly just news about their service, but always interesting in reading them.

we recently launched a site that has a you-tubeish clone to it, none the less the media progressive download bottlenecks the the rest of the sites functions beyond video...
I've been looking into solutions with moving the files elsewhere.
I was looking at Lime Light Networks but they were $1/gig, granted i'm sure their service is great but we're currently moving 3tb and have been going up around 500gb every month. So we really can't afford that.
I just stumbled on Amazon S3 and that looks real attractive, has anybody used their services or know of a site that does that I could test it out.
And the last stupid question, I'm trying to figure out how it works, they make it sound like all you have to do is put a CNAME in your zone, but I need the video clips to be put there as they're uploaded...

I have most of my sites on the very reliable clook.co.uk but I only only get around a Gig of bandwidth per month per site.
I'm thinking of getting an unlimited hosting package so I could upload client's music files, large images, video clips etc.. Nothing is illegal or adult. Then I could host my sites as normal at Clook and then point to all the very large files being hosted at the new place.
I think I'd get about 10Gig of traffic max a month. And as it'll just be an extended online harddrive I've no real need for databases, email, php, cPanel etc...
I've seen some unlimited offers at hostpapa.co.uk for 4.99 a month with a free domain. Is there a catch? What do you recommend?

However there are 4 parts to it and can not work out how to get it to work, we tried their user panel and still tells us key is invalid. Tried the Media Temple helpdesk and they have no idea either.
Does anyone have experience installing these?

They really have an ideal plan for me with their grid service. But I wanted any recent customer views on them, before I make my mind up about going with them for hosting.
Also if you don't think Media Temple is good can you provide someone who is?
I have been reading this forum all night now. And I'm just clueless still as to who would be good enough to go with. I don't want to make a wrong decision. I would prefer something with 10Gb or over not fussed on the cpanel or bandwidth as long as they have good support and are efficient. Also my budget is around the $20-$25 bracket.

I am currently hosting with Media Temple, but I completely hate plesk, and want cPanel on the server. I have even considered going to Mosso, but too expensive for what I need.
Here is my question, I have a (dv) server with MT, and am wondering, can I put cPanel on there instead of Plesk. I tried to search their knowledge base with no luck. I am currently on hold waiting for tech support, but I still have about 17 minutes so I figured I may get a quicker response here.
