Alternatives To DNSReport (DNSReport Now Charging Users For Dns Lookups)

May 17, 2007

Now that DNSReport is forcing logins/charging users for accounts does anyone know of any alternatives?

I can't seem to find anything remotely decent throughout my search engine hunts!

Dnsreport Goes Pay Only - Alternatives?

Aug 30, 2007

One of my favorite web tools, dnsreport dot com, has gone pay only apparently

Is there any other service that is as close to advanced with the nice breakdown it does? Perhaps some tool I can install on one of my own servers?

I know the super skilled will says oh just run this, that and the other command line tool for the same info but I really liked the way they did it and how it explained the details.

Dnsreport

Feb 14, 2007

Ran a dnsreport on my domain, everything is ok except on thing:

Mail server host name in greeting

WARNING: One or more of your mailservers is claiming to be a host other than what it really is (the SMTP greeting should be a 3-digit code, followed by a space or a dash, then the host name). If your mailserver sends out E-mail using this domain in its EHLO or HELO, your E-mail might get blocked by anti-spam software. This is also a technical violation of RFC821 4.3 (and RFC2821 4.3.1). Note that the hostname given in the SMTP greeting should have an A record pointing back to the same server. Note that this one test may use a cached DNS record. domainconcern.com claims to be host server.host.com [but that host is at xxx.xxx.67.2 (may be cached), not xxx.xxx.67.3].

Is this normal? I mean, the domain is using a dedicated IP anyway.

Dnsreport Says Stealth Nameservers

Apr 30, 2007

I did an OS reload and I decided to setup my own nameservers. Previously I have my sites using everydns.net

Now I added the two nameservers I created to my Godaddy account (the nameservers that point to everydns are still there,) and they are updated.
I added the A records inside my zone to point to the ip address.
Dns report shows theseerrors:

AIL: You have one or more missing (stealth) nameservers. The followingnameserver(s) are listed (at your nameservers) as nameservers for yourdomain, but are not listed at the parent nameservers (therefore, theymay or may not get used, depending on whether your DNS servers returnthem in the authority section for other reques5.4.1). You need to make sure that these stealth nameservers areworking; if they are not responding, you may have serious problems! TheDNS Report will not query these servers, so you need to be very carefulthat they are working properly.

gogol.ithaki.net.
schubert.ithaki.net.
This islisted as an ERROR because there are some cases where nasty problemscan occur (if the TTLs vary from the NS records at the root servers andthe NS records point to your own domain, for example).
Your DNS servers leak stealth information in non-NS requests:

Stealth nameservers are leaked [gogol.ithaki.net.]!
Stealth nameservers are leaked [schubert.ithaki.net.]!

Thiscan cause some serious problems (especially if there is a TTLdiscrepancy). If you must have stealth NS records (NS records listed atthe authoritative DNS servers, but not the parent DNS servers), youshould make sure that your DNS server does not leak the stealth NSrecords in response to other queries.

ERROR: I could not complete a connection to any of your mailservers!

server.ithaki.net: Timed out [Last data sent: [Did not connect]]

Ifthis is a timeout problem, note that the DNS report only waits about 40seconds for responses, so your mail *may* work fine in this case butyou will need to use testing tools specifically designed for suchsituations to be certain.

My Server Fail On DNSReport.com's "Mail" Test

Jan 16, 2007

I run a DNSReport.com test for my domain name and it failed on "Mail" section with this error message:

HTML Code:
ERROR: I could not complete a connection to any of your mailservers!

my-domain.com: Timed out [Last data sent: RCPT TO: ]

If this is a timeout problem, note that the DNS report only waits about 40 seconds for responses, so your mail *may* work fine in this case but you will need to use testing tools specifically designed for such situations to be certain.
also on DNSReport.com mail test, got this error message:

HTML Code:
my-domain.com. - xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx [Could not connect: Could not receive data: Operation timed out.]

[Note that if your mailserver takes over 30 seconds to respond, our test will timeout, even though real mailservers will wait longer] what makes my server failed on this test?

Apr 5, 2009

there are a few Hosting companies that actually charge for Setting up your account, most of the Companies that were doing this in the past have reconconcilled their Terms and are now looking to not charge for setting up one's account.

Do you guys think this is a way of overcharging or is it Just Necessary?

Liquid Web Now Charging For Using Their DNS

Jun 19, 2008

I found out that now LiquidWeb is charging $15 per domain for using their name servers.

That's right. To use their name servers, you need to pay $15 for EACH and EVERY domain name.

When I first joined I talked to support because I needed a solution that used an anonymous domain server and they said that they could do it with no problem. (We're talking about under 100 domains total)

Now that all my servers are moved there, they screw it all up by charging $15 per domain.

I HIGHLY Recommend staying away from this company until they fix this issue.

I have private nameservers but the whole fact of me signing up with them was the fact that they could provide name servers.

The worst part is that there was no notice, no email, nothing notifying me of this change. It just happened one day.

I'll be posting on my blog (sig) and recommending all the people I have referred don't use their services.

How To Stop Dedicatedbox.net From Charging Me

Sep 17, 2008

I was using a server from dedicatedbox until last month. And I didn't want suffer anymore from their terrible service (IP taken away/provided less memory then ordered/down time/rarely answered support tickets/refused to fix problem after phone call), so I terminated my server last month. So my server was indeed shutdown as requested.

But after terminating the server, they still keeps sending bills and charing me. I have my credit card charged back the first bill. But seems that they are going to charge me another time this month. I tried to call them, but the phone call wasn't answered.

how could I stop them from making trouble?

What To Hide ....From Whois Lookups

Apr 13, 2008

Is there a way you can hide from the whois lookups how many site's you have hosted on your server? Like, for the reverse IP, usually it'll mention how many sites are hosted on the server when you do a whois lookup.

Is there a way to prevent it from doing that?

Test Dns Lookups From Around The World

I am trying to debug a dns problem.

What I need is for you to do a dns lookup and report:

1) the address that was returned, the last octect will do.

2) the area of the world you queried from

The answers *will* vary because the dns server is geolocation enabled. Or, at least they *should* vary. But, someone claims its buggered.

The host name to lookup is:

ssl.dnsmasq.com

C.S.F. Blocking Nameserver Lookups

Oct 3, 2007

when I enable csf my server looses the ability to do an nameserver lookups. It doesn't seem like port 53 is being blocked, I've added the 2 nameservers in /etc/resolve.conf to my csf.allow file, but still nothing. Outgoing mail fails because it can't lookup domain names, I've tried nslookup from the command line and it times out. I'm out of ideas. Am I wrong about looking at port 53? Do I need to whitelist some other IP I'm missing? This is a RHEL5 server.

iptables --line-numbers -L OUTPUT -n | grep :53

Powweb Charging Loyal Customers More...

Jul 11, 2008

Powweb's regular monthly charge is $7.77... Long term customers have been paying this for years, and it's still the price listed on their main page. It's even the price new customers will pay...

However, existing customer for some reason now have to pay the undocumented price of $8.77 a month.

Way to treat your existing customers! Charging them more for no reason other than they've been loyal!

Provider Keeps Charging, How To Cancel My Card?

May 29, 2009

I know there is chargeback and all, but here in our country.. I heard from my lawyer I could get sued if I charge back, and banks here generally does not approve of such actions.

Anyways, I have a really lousy windows reseller provider and I will be moving the remaining accounts out soon, since their support is no longer responding to anything I ask...

What I fear is the monthly billing will still continue, and I have no means of demanding them to end it..

Would I get into trouble if I decide to just close my cc instead?

Preventing Users From Connecting To Other Users Database

What I want to do is to make the users can only connect to their own databases and not other's.

I tried changing the localhost ip address but it didn't work ( I assume I didn't do it the right way)

Leaseweb Alternatives

Purchased a 3-month test period on a dedicated server a few days back but directadmin failed to boot from the outset, support wiped everything and reinstalled onto another partition which worked fine for about 12hrs.

Now I can't even FTP, tried rebooting from service centre etc. nada! probably hardware failure, Prices seemed too good to be true , glad I didn't move my entire site across [active forum with over 10,000 members] as the response time seems to be in days rather than hours.

Any reliable alternatives offering similar packages for similar money?

Alternatives For HostingFest

Jul 16, 2007

I have been using hostingfest for a few months now, I had no issues and was very happy as they offered 1000mb space and 10GB b/w, also 3 sql 2005 dbs included and its space subject to the total space, so no restriction on db space.

Since yesterday it has started to bother me, the server is down! no reply from the support staff, which is unusual as they are very fast otherwise.

So i am thinking of a replacement now... cannot afford my site to be down for long

i have the basic fest plan, if someone can suggest me a good alternative??

Main requirement:

atleast 3 domains, 3 sql 2005 dbs (not lite)
asp.net 2 framework
and about 10GB bandwidth

Looking At RackSpace.. What Are Some Reputable Alternatives?

Mar 18, 2008

We were looking at a server on Rackspace for $300/month, but I wanted to see if there are any reputable companies which can provide a similar service for a bit less money.

Technically we could go with RackSpace, but there's got to be a service just like RackSpace but costing less? Our site only receives approximately 500-600 unique visitors per day, but once every two months or so we get a huge spike in traffic. Our current hosting provider has us on a VPS plan (we pay $80/mo) and today the server crashed because of a huge amount of traffic. We run an e-commerce site with many SQL queries involved, etc. I'm looking for a well established company.
