Hosting In 2 Different Locations For More Uptime
Mar 24, 2007This week there was some one who asked me if he would have 100% uptime having his web site hosting in 2 different locations, with one server name pointing to a webhost, and the other server name pointing to a second web host.
For instance I want to host example.com on WebHostA and WebHostB
WebHostA's DNS are
ns1.webhosta.com
ns2.webhosta.com
WebHostB's DNS are
ns1.webhostb.com
ns2.webhostb.com
And he would set for instance for example.com:
ns1.webhostb.com
ns1.webhosta.com
He doesn't have a database, just a static page. For e-mail, he would configure 2 e-mail accounts in his email client, using the IP address of both web hosts to make sure he doesn't lose emails.
Wouldn't that work? He should have 100% uptime this way,

Nov 2, 2007i work for a small but fairly successful and quickly rising company. we're looking for hosting for our corporate site. we could host it ourselves but that would put an extra burden on engineering and we're stretched pretty thin as it is. we moved to bluehost on my recommendation. i've been using them for 2 years now and never had a problem. unfortunately less than two days after we switched the server is now down. it's been down for over 4 hours now and we've blown past several estimated times from tech support. i know this is a rare thing but it doesn't look good and i don't think the higher ups much want to stay with them. so here's some info about our site. requires SSI, CGI, Perl 5.8+ with Perl DBI 1.32+ and Perl DBD::Mysql > 2.1021+ Perl Modules, ImageMagick 6.0.6+ Perl Module or GD Perl Module (GD.pm 2.17+), PHP 5. small traffic with occasional spikes. approx 200 uniques daily. occasional spikes if we happen to show up in the news. we do have the possibility of showing up in all major US news outlets. it's happened once before which resulted in almost 1,000 uniques which quickly tapered back off to normal levels. we're currently using 154MB of disk space and 8GB of bandwidth last month. we need multiple ftp accounts to allow marketing and contract web devs to upload their own files. probably around 10 or so would be adequate. email not required. we have a hosted exchange server. uptime and quick response to server outages important. being a corporate site and not our application downtime isn't truly horrible but it is perceived as such. this site is our identity. we're a tech company and it looks bad when our corporate site is down. even when our application isn't.

100% Uptime Possible
Mar 28, 2009I am shopping around for a new dedicated server and am running into sites that offer 100% Uptime guarantees.
Is 100% uptime possible? Wouldn't that mean that they never reboot their server, or never perform specific maintenance/updates on the server?
I guess when I see 100% uptime, I would expect perfection. I thought I'd ask here if this is possible because I'd hate to invest dollars on something false.

Next, how is that .1% lost? Do their servers crash for a second?

(Less than 53 mins of downtime.) I'm looking for something like a link to a report on an independent monitor site (e.g. hyperspin, alertra, host-tracker) that has checked at least every 10 mins over that period.
We get a lot of requests for "reliable" hosting here, and I'm hoping this will be useful information - even if there are no responses!

Aug 16, 2007As I've mentioned in other threads, I work in the hosting industry at the support end of things. I can't go more than 10 minutes into my shift each day without seeing a ticket where someone is complaining about or contesting the "99% uptime guarantee". One day a couple weeks ago, I had someone complaining about an Alertra report with 98.7% uptime, and how it was unsatisfactory for their site to be down for 10 minutes every month. What's more, it was just a stupid World of Warcraft forum that probably saw 5 visitors per day.
My co-workers and I have been debating this, though. What worth is there in 99% uptime? Is it something that can be achieved? If so, would people pay more for it? Would it be able to be marketed to the shared hosting community? Would people be willing to pay more for 100% uptime? Would the same answers apply?

Oct 4, 2007I have a VPS and am looking for a way to show existing and potential clients the uptime levels of the server. I have a basic uptime page provided by WHMCS, but I want to go a little beyond that.
If I were to choose an uptime reporting service such as siteuptime.com, hyperspin.com or site24x7.com, what would you recommend that I monitor? Obviously HTTP, FTP, POP3 and MySQL, but anything else? Do these services monitor the server load also?
Also, is it a good idea to display these stats publicly?
