Convert A MSSQL To A MySQL Db

Jul 22, 2007

I am currently using phpdotnuke for a site, and have a forum linked to it supplied by activemodules.com. I would like to move to a non-cms site and something like vbulletin, so want to convert the forum db from MSSQL to MySQL - and hopefully keep all the posts and login data!

As a complete novice to that process, is there any pointers out there in terms of reading material, non-command line software etc I can use? Has anyone done this conversion, and what are the dangers?

Do I need to uninstall MSSQL or it would be as easy as installing MSSQL express on top of MSSQL server.

Inexpensive (shared) Dotnet 3.5 Hosting

Jan 2, 2008

I've searched extensively through the Windows hosting forum but I was not able to find reasonable hosting providers based on the following criteria:

* Shared is fine (I'm on a budget)
* The cheaper the better (no more than 2 hours / week downtime)
* 9-5 support and 24 hour ticket turnaround
* Include .NET 3.5
* Include ASP.NET and WCF (web services)
* Allow up to 5 domain names that I already own
* Include 2GB of disk space and 10GB of traffic / month
* A decent pipe, something like 100K down and 50k up
* SQL Server 2005 Express (or better) with the ability to remotely connect to via Management Studio (with credentials)
* Ability to run or use a POP and SMTP server
* Allow file upload / download via FTP or secure FTP

MSSQL Express 2005 Instead Of MSSQL 2005 ?

Dec 27, 2007

I`ve just got a new Windows 2003 Web Edition box and now I`m going to install a database server on that.

MSSQL 2005 license would costs 270$/mo for me, So thats not possible to use it because of its price.

I`m not sure if MSSQL Express 2005 or MSDE (which are free) can handle all requirements of ASP.NET programmers or not.

Is there any limitations for major scripts on those? or will those make any doubts for programmers?

Please share your experiences and suggestions.

* I`m going to install "Hosting Controller" on that box.

Last time this happened, I reinstalled mysql and it worked, but it isnt working this time no matter what I do.

Java Hosting Advise

Sep 18, 2008

I am planning to host a java portal which would be used for online listing and buying. I am expecting around 100 (max) concurrent users and approx 20,000+ hits a day.

I am sure about bandwidth and space requirement. But I am confused about Heap Space Memory?

The site would have around 50 dynamic screens.

Should I go for private tomcat jvm option with around 128 MB of heap space memory? Is 128MB heap space sufficient for above type of user requirement? Or please suggest the type of configuration I can go for.

Java: Possible To Set Max. Memory Globally

Aug 18, 2008

In some VPS environments there is not enough memory available to run java, and the usual error occurs, ie:

# java -version
Error occurred during initialization of VM
Could not reserve enough space for object heap
Could not create the Java virtual machine.

So in the command line we force the maximum memory allowed for java:

# java -Xmx128 -version
java version "1.5.0_14"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_14-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 1.5.0_14-b03, mixed mode)

Now my current problem is that there are some scripts/other applications I am running that don't seem to have a single easy area to declare the max. memory that java can use, so my question obviously is, is there any option or java configuration file where maximum memory available to java can be set globally? I've done a lot of searching and am still unable to find an answer to this.
