Vps Timeout
I got my VPS a few days ago and want to get started.
I installed Webmin (with the rpm - centos 5), and it says it installed successfully and then I can login.
I typed in my domain name with the ':10000' but I get a network timeout in Firefox.
I know my DNS is right, because I have the domain name pointed to my IP address with an A record.
SSH is working fine, I can login using the domain name and not my IP address.
I tried installing Lighttpd, but still get the timeout. Replacing the domain name with the VPS IP address doesn't work either.

VPS - Connection Timeout
I have a problem with my VPS. Hosting company have migrated my vps to a new and better dedicated server and now on all my sites(and IP) I got connection timeout error. I have changed "Main IP" and resolvers in HyperVM 10 minutes ago and it's not working(or I have to wait to wait like for nameservers registration?). I can ping my IP and all services(lxadmin,lighttpd etc are started successfully and its not wotking, I still getting connection timeout error.

Does Cron Timeout?
Simply wondering, does cron timeout? I have heard mixed reports and can't find any good info. Personally i've run a cronjob for up to 6 minutes, but as my best method was sending myself emails through php, its not exactly a highly accurate testing method. On the same note, what would happen if one cronjob is running a php script for over 10 minutes, then another cron job starts on the same script, before the first one has finished?

Is there a way to increase the timeout for a SSH connection when idle? Mine (on my server) seems to time out after 15-20 mins of inactivity. I'd like to increase this to like 60 mins or indefinitely.

Unique Apache Timeout
I have a new website that has a similar feature to tripadvisor's Reviews, where users share detailed thoughts and experiences. They fill in all this information on one form so there is no interaction with the system while they are writing. I know Apache has the TimOut setting which is set to 5 minutes by default. This ensures that you do not have users using active memory and sessions for a long period of time. But the problem I have seen is that some users are spending 15-20 minutes writing very detailed experiences and when they hit the submit button obviously their session has timed out and they lose everything and get a system error. I really don't want to change the TimeOut value in Apache to 20 min due to resource constraints, but is this my only option?

Scripts Timeout After 60 Sec
I have a phpbb3 forum that I post sound clips for my members to download and I had a few of them tell me that sometimes the downloads truncate. I asked my host what the deal is and they told me that their scripts time out after 60 seconds and that there was no way to make it longer. I have never heard of this before and I want to know, is that normal or standard for hosting companies? It seems weird that they would host a message board that allows attachments and their service doesn't allow enough time for people with dialup or slower connections to download files in their entirety.

HTTP Keapalive Timeout
I'm trying to solve an issue with certain customers timing out. In regards to the "http KeepAlive timeout" value.... When this timer expires, does the webserver have the tcp stack send a FIN? IF so, does it actually do it like at six or seven seconds? It's actually IBM IHS in this case.

Why Getting Session Timeout Error In IE
I am assisting a client who is linking to an online calculator, he is putting a frame on top of the calculator page, so people will still see his information. However, for some reason he is getting a Session Timeout Error in IE. I don't get this error in Firefox using this method, or ever going to the direct page in IE. Timeout- After Working For Awhile
I've been experiencing some annoying issues recently, trying to troubleshoot whether it's actually my server or my ISP - Using a HostGator standard box, php 5.2.3, optimized based on scribby's tutorial. Basically I'll be editing my website for about 10-15 minutes, going through the admin panel and uploading files from it several times. Suddenly it will begin timing out for about 1 min or so and then it will run very sluggish/slow unless I let it "cool down" for a bit and try again later. I ran "ping -t mysite.com" while editing the site and during the timeouts and there was no packet loss. I can access other sites on the server and WHM from the IP at normal speeds during the timeouts, and other people can access the affected site fine.

MySQL Timeout On Active Connections
unfortunately my server crashes a lot recently. What happens is that some application creates a MySQL connection which hangs and then MySQL gets overloaded and takes the whole server down. My question: 1. How do I configure MySQL to time out even on active connections ? I.e. after 30 seconds kill the process no matter if it is still active or not. Is that possible ? 2. How do I exclude the root user from that?

CSF Causing Server Ping Timeout
I just installed a fresh new server with CSF Soon I find out that my ping keeps dropping. The server was smoothly running, SSH is smooth, Website are loading fine, except I cannot ping my server. I disable SELINUX completely and it still doesn't help. When I disable CSF, my server ping are responding back! Ping Timeout On IPs Used For IP Based Sites
For some reason, my IPs that we use for a IP based site are un-pinable (ping time out) after some time. However, when I restart apf (firewall) the ip are back again and are pinable again. We added the IPs for the IP based site over the ensim panel. I belive its a Firewall issue, does anyone know how to check why the Ips are always getting un-pinable?

Some Websites Load Slow + Mysql Timeout
I'm hosting about 6 private websites on my server, and some have problems. My biggest website is a vb forum with 30.000 members and 1.5 million posts. When i browse with firefox i see that vb forum loads fast, but phpads which is integrated on the top and footer loads very slow. When i browse with IE, it takes like 10 seconds before the whole site is loaded and sometimes IE even crashes. When i try to login on another website / admin panel (oscommerce), i get a mysql gone away error, that means timeout. But why does it show that? DNS Lookup Timeout From Googlebot Indexing Webpages
One of my customers uses Webmasters Tools from google , looking at what pages he have indexed by Googlebot, found that 180 pages are giving a "DNS lookup timeout" error, tried searching for help on google and the only thing that i found is " We received a timeout on DNS lookup." VPN Timeout Issues - Cisco & Watchguard
I have 2 locations, one with a Watchguard Firebox II/1000 and the other with a Cisco ASA 5520. I have configured a VPN between them and have run into a snag. The VPN tunnel works fine until it expires, but there is a significant lag in re-establishing the tunnel. The lag is enough to cause Backup and Data transfer failures due to timeouts. Does anyone know how to configure the VPN tunnel to never expire, regardless of uptime or traffic volume? The Cisco doesn't seem to want to let me configure either phase for 0 or infinate kb expiration.

CGI Timeout Error [php_curl.dll Not Found]
PHP pages on my server are not responding. Following message appears in Logs: Unknown(): Unable to load dynamic library 'c:program filesswsoftpleskadditionalphpextensionsphp_curl.dll' The specific module could not be found. Plesk 7.5.6 Control Panel PHP 4.3 is installed on server. It was working perfect till last night. How can I fix this, any advice? The php_curl.dll is available in above location and have correct permissions.

i have this weird problem of emails not gettign delivered and i am hosting with theplanet. None of your nameservers responded fast enough. They are probably down or unreachable. I can't continue since your nameservers aren't responding. If you have a Watchguard Firebox, it's due to a bug in their DNS Proxy, which must be disabled (31 Jul 2006 UPDATE: several years after being informed of this, there is a rumor that there is a fix that allows the Watchguard DNS proxy to work).

ProFTPD: 421 No Transfer Timeout (300 Seconds): Closing Control Connection
Since moving servers I've been plagued by constant disconnects whilst using FTP: 421 No transfer timeout (300 seconds): closing control connection I've gone through Proftpd's forum and documentation numerous times to try and find a solution to this but have been unsuccessful so far. Within proftpd's config file it's set at: TimeoutLogin 120 TimeoutIdle 3600 TimeoutNoTransfer 3600 TimeoutStalled 3600 So I am unsure where it is getting the "300 seconds" from. Even though the error states 300 seconds, this problem happens way before 300 seconds every time and has happened during the transfer of files (when the connection has been active and in use). I've tried 3 different FTP clients and used the "Keep Alive" option in each and it has absolutely no effect. I am unsure if APF is causing the problem, I can't see any problems in any of the server logs in relation to ftp.

APC :: Shows "timeout" And "out Of Memory" Errors With Php Scripts
We have installed APC 3.1.3p1 beta (and also 3.0.19 stable seperately, to test) and we are seeing a lot of "out of memory" and "timeout" errors. For example, a php scripts dies saying the available memory is 256Kbytes, and the script tries to allocate 256 Mbytes of memory. Here are the APC settings: [APC] apc.enabled = 1 apc.shm_segments = 1 apc.shm_size = 128 apc.max_file_size = 8M apc.stat = 1 and PHP settings related to memory is memory_limit = 1024M We have tried included apc.php file to watch out the cache, but it doesn't show any kind of fragmantation or etc. related with system, instead it shows "timeout" and "out of memory" errors with php scripts. We have thought that the error can be related to /dev/shm as you should increase apc.shm_size in order to obtain more memory, therefore we have mounted /dev/shm as 4Gbytes. The server has 8Gbytes of memory (using 64-bit CentOS). Note that once we set apc.enabled = 0, the problems go away, so it's definitely something with APC.

Memory Issues On JaguarPC VPS. Suggestions? Recommend A Virtual Private Server (VPS)
I recently moved my site from a shared hosting plan at $5 a month to a VPS at JaguarPC. I took advantage of one of the offers here at Web Host Talk. My setup has cPanel with 320MB of RAM. I have another site running the same software (Joomla, vBulletin) with cPanel and only 256MB of RAM at KnownHost. I've had zero problems with Knownhost and the site is snappy. The site hosted at JaguarPC continues to have all kinds of problems. Running a number of sites, I don't always get to check in on my sites unless I know of a problem. I'm sorry I didn't pay more attention to this site, because it was having all types of PHP memory issues. When I first contacted JaguarPC, they said they boosted the memory in Apache. The issues remained, so I contacted them again. They recommended more RAM. Now, I checked on my KnownHost site and that's running on 256MB. I figured that maybe JaguarPC didn't allocate enough RAM when they set up the VPS. They confirmed 320MB. Not wanting to change hosts, I asked them to poke around a bit more, considering what I know about KnownHost and my success there. I received this response: have checked and you are running named service on your server. named caches dns data and this can also consume a lot of memory, sometimes over a 100 MB may be consumed by this service. In addition to cPanel and named which are most memory consuming applications running on your server, there are other applications like apache web server and the php scripts running on the server also consume some memory. It is highly recommended that you upgrade the RAM on your VPS significantly to avoid such problems which may cause disruption of service. You can find a list of RAM and other VPS addons in the following link. Instead of helping me resolve the problem, they simply keep asking me to get more RAM. For SEO purposes, I like to keep my sites on different hosts. Can anyone recommend a VPS? I was certainly unaware that "named service" had such an impact on my VPS. If that's the case, is there any harm in not having this? SEO or otherwise?

2 VPS Move To 1 New VPS = Domain Name Server (DNS) Puzzle
A chicken or egg type of problem with potential to escalate into an egg on the face problem. I have two VPS accounts with PowerVPS, which we need to move to one new VPS account. Problem is I'm not sure how to handle the DNS move or settings to minimise downtime. Currently the DNS is spread over the two VPS accounts. How do we keep the same DNS names and move to one new VPS without dramas? PS. Before you say "ask PowerVPS", they don't support DNS config on two VPS accounts.

Ubiquity VPS Four-month Review (and About Adventures With VPS In General
The short: Professional, honest, and competent. I've learned that when dealing with VPSes, if you want to be fancy you need to tolerate problems. While Icertainly had some interesting issues [url] with Ubiquity, besides a few of them they fall into the categories of 'stuff happens' and 'should get a dedicated server, instead'. It ran two of the most active adult communities in the world without a hitch. Except my members are addicted to them like crack and 15 minute lag issues are the end of the world for some : ) So now, four months after I left Acceleratedweb for Ubiquity [url]I am the proud owner of an overstock server from Ubiquity and am reviewing their VPS. As the first link suggests - it wasn't my first shot with Ubiquity. I think that says a lot for making "If you ever want to come back." offers. They now have $125/month of my money, most of that guaranteed (I dislike having only one host so am probably going to try poking Futurehosting again after Lenny becomes a VPS install option there, or maybe Steadfast). I really appreciate Ubiquity's patience with me while I learned how to self manage. I've come to detest control panels and have gotten rather good at it, especially after custom designing my own LAMP stack (handled over four thousand php page landings and forty thousand queries a minute from seventy connections... bad AJAX is a good DDOS simulation). Typical Response Time: Ten minutes or so - pretty fast, though resolution can often be longer. The clock on vz010 is off by six hours on reboot. Very annoying. General attitude: Not as individually detailed as AcceleratedWeb was, but this is okay, since I know more on my own now. Beyond that, they are generally pleasant compared to other VPS host's I've tried. Server ping: Originally around 15 milliseconds. 40 now, and the same to my new server - I wonder if echo requests or replies are throttled. I'm not sure if I'm a good judge here - the forums rarely take more than 2 mbps during any given minute unless I'm downloading a backup. Server uptime: There was a crash a few days after I moved the forums to the VPS. November was around 99% with that, but otherwise it's closer to 99.8%, if you count occasional local outages. There is a router in between their network and their VPSes which sometimes goes haywire, which seems to be the main culprit. Server speed: This is a bit tricky. Ubiquity only gives you access to one core. This may seem bad, but occasionally VPS members get hoggy, do you want one person out of thirty bringing your VPS down or one person out of four? In the end, raw disk bandwidth is what counts for performance for me. The VPS server itself has a monstrous amount of RAM making this, usually, a non-issue. Occasionally though another VPSer would do something disk-heavy enough for us to suffer. "Get dedicated" <- we just did, that's why this review is here : ) Security: Ubiquity only took my root password when trying to diagnose the mystery disappearing disk space issue. They run a RAID and perform daily backups, and their control and billing software has no obvious security issues (though their billing software is plenty funky in other ways). Price: Futurehosting is a bit more expensive but offers the future protect deal, while Ubiquity only permits one backup via the control panel. Pretty competitive for what is offered and allowed. ---- I did have issues with Ubiquity. Their DNS servers fritz occasionally. There was the mysterious disk issue that caused me to leave them in the first place. The server crash really made me grit my teeth. The system clock on vz010 gets set ahead 6 hours on reboot - very annoying (and the butt of a lot of time travel jokes on my forums). Even though that only happened twice. There are lag spike issues, but it never brought the forums down after the first time and even then it was resolved within 15 minutes. Something I've learned and made it a bit of a mantra. Tolerate mistakes, cheap, do what you want - pick two. Or better, a good balance between them. The support staff is both professional and, in general, technically competent. If something is over someone's head, it happens, it gets forwarded on and is generally dealt with. The only thing I really blame them for is letting vz010's clock be off for six hours after I notified them - but they were apparently rather busy. ---- I looked over dozens of VPSes for the criteria I wanted, and paid for several. I needed a US host, in a fairly liberal state - I do not want my server hijacked by puritan authorities as had happened in Florida and Pennsylvania. I needed to host adult content, with an irc policy that makes sense. I needed to run Debian Lenny, and manage it on my own. Out of all of them, Ubiquity was the only one that let me do everything I needed to, reliably and with confidence, for a price I could comfortably afford. Lunarpages VPS Or Servint VPS? What Is Your Opinion On Lunarpages VPS?
I am looking for a new VPS and once again I think I am going to ditch Servint VPS in preference of a cheaper VPS. I know Servint is well known and they have a very good reputation here in this forum. I been longing to sign up with them but Lunarpages' offer looks very attractive. What about Lunarpages? It is $10 cheaper than Servint. Lunarpages has 1000 GB bandwidth but Servint has only 500 GB. Lunarpages has 20 GB storage but Servint has only 15 GB. Lunarpages has 500 MB RAM but Servint has 384 MB guaranteed RAM (1 GB burst RAM). Convert From Plesk VPS To CPanel VPS
I mostly work with cPanel/WHM but, I have to work with Plesk for just one client of mine. He's on Plesk becoz I came to know Plesk worked better on 256MB VPS than cPanel in the early days. Hence, on my recommendation, he is on Plesk on a 512 MB Memory VPS till now for all these years. I wonder how tedious it might be to convert from Plesk to cPanel? The client basically uses Joomala + vBulletin and runs forums as of now. Also, which CP will perform better on 512 MB VPS - Plesk or cPanel.

Transfer Sites From VPS To Another VPS Transparently
We've got about 40 sites hosted on a VPS from a provider that we'd like to put elsewhere due to reliability problems where we are. So is there a way to transfer all of this between VPS's (assuming similar environment) and maintain all existing web content, email addresses/passwords/aliases/forwarders, MySQL databases, etc? Linux VPS Vs. Windows VPS
I'm thinking of upgrading my shared hosting account to a VPS account, but I do not know which to go for. Right now I'm using Linux for my website. I do understand that there are differences between Linux and Windows. What I don't understand is why would someone choose Linux over Windows or Windows over Linux. If I understand correctly, I would be able to install applications such as mIRC on windows via Remote Desktop. That's something I like. However, I never controlled my website on a Windows computer before. So basically what are the differences between Linux VPS and Windows VPS?

Cpanel VPS - Plenty Of Free Memory, But 'committed' Memory Exceeds VPS RAM
I have a VPS. And have had an issue both when it was 1Gig and now I recently downgraded it to 768m, because I am moving some sites to a dedicated. However, the part I am having trouble grasping is that when I look at graphs from Munin, it will typically always show 200-400MB free memory (and free -m and top agrees with munin), but Munin shows 'committed' memory that is above the total Ram on the VPS and once the 'committed' ram exceeds the VPS limit, processes start failing. So, why is 'committed' memory exceeding the RAM on my VPS, when Munin, free -m and top all show there is free memory available?
