VBulletin Account Quandry And Lack Of Help - Any Experience
Jan 14, 2008
An email account of mine was exploited, and it was most likely my fault for a dictionary word password. This account was just used for spam generally. I do have a few things on it but its basically a personal email. vBulletin was one.
Well someone apparently figured out the password because they wanted my vBulletin license. I log in to quickly check the mail yesterday and I see about 10+ vB emails for tickets on top of my email not logging in with the normal password. I realize the guy is still on at the very moment trying to get my license transferred. So there's a clear mark of two different people being on the account. vB did great in holding him to their security features and not allowing him to change the account login.
Despite this, he managed to get the license itself suspended because there was an install on my website under my name and some random hacker website. He had done that after his attempts to transfer were denied. Well, in the process of this, I get on and I am able to answer the security questions without issue. I get all the passwords changed so he no longer has access. In fact, I hardened everything because I am generally up on this sort of thing (figures its the one account, so for those of you who use weak passwords that's my testimonial).
Well, I ask what I need to do to get my license turned back to my website. I get a response saying that I've "already been told" what to do and I'm not going to be told this again. Keep in mind that despites someones attempts to change everything, I was the only one in a clear non-broken English accent, with an IP that can be documented as being used before, and I answered the security questions. I read through the phony ticket and it doesn't say much of anything. I also noticed outright incompetency when it came down to the vB tech saying that other license of mine (clearly expired and not used) was illegally employed on my hosting forum which clearly runs SMF.
The rep. replied to me again today saying he would explain it, but the only explanation I see suggests that I need to purchase another license. I understand that the email issue was mine, but it sure feels like vB is trying to take advantage of a bad situation. I keep being told that no exceptions can be made.
Has anyone ever had this happen and what are we expected to do? I'm not buying another license, I've worked for a variety of companies in the past and there is always some reasonable way of verifying the person is who they say they are and helping them. I'm not here to bash vB, although I am quite disappointed. I just need some help that I thought I was paying for.

I recently signed up to virpus for their VPS managed services,
I contacted them on the 9th to get the server up and running so i can run the dolphin social network software, a few quick replied tickets were sent back and forth the final was
'We are checking the required dependencies for dolphin and will update you once this has been completed. Please note that this procedure would require apache recompilation and therefore possible down time. Please let us know if we can proceed regarding this.'
which i replied that it is fine to proceed.
12 hours passes, i reply again to confirm that they are proceeding, no reply. another 12 hours, i open another ticket to see if i can expedite this. i then get a message which says
' Hello,
We apologize for the delay in getting back with you. This ticket has automatically been escalated to an administrator to speed this ticket up.
We appreciate your patience.
Warm Regards,
Management at
Virpus Networks, Inc.'
now every ticket i submit just keeps sending me this on the hour every hour.
Not the best start to my hosting with Virpus. anyone else had issues with these guys?

I have been with Site5 for several years, but will be moving shortly.
Having to wait over a day for support to email you back is getting really old. And then when they do, their response doesn't answer your question. They obviously can't read.
My latest problem is with the version of php they are running. I need 5.2.0 or better for cubecart 4.2. No problem Site5's wiki says about php:
Current Installations
Yes, we do have both versions installed and available to every single customer.
last updated: --Tom 12:35, 25 January 2008 (EDT)
Version 4.x: 4.4.7
Version 5.x: 5.2.1
EXCEPT on my server which has 5.1.2 and there are no plans to upgrade any time soon.
So the response I got was that I could install a more current version of php in my own account???? I am not a UNIX guru and seriously doubt I have all the rights I would need to install software on their servers.
Needless to say I am looking for a new hosting company. I have looked at Syn and am waiting for a response from them. I assume their sales staff doesn't work week-ends.

Since a week ago, my VPS with them are more down than up until 3 days ago when it totally dead. Support ticket are never replied, online help never seen Online, FULLY MANAGED is an illusion. He only answer support ticket when I posted it in hosting forum. On 9th Sept, I received email from David - Wixed.co.uk :
Quote:
Dear Clients,
Ealier this afternoon our main VPS node VZ1US suffered from a hard drive failure following notifications received by our SMART monitoring daemon a couple of days ago. We backed up all client VPS's at approximately 8:30PM Last night and moved them to an offsite server. We are currently in the proccess of restoring your backups to a new server we have had deployed.
We sincerely apologise for any inconvinience caused and are working hard to get the backups restored. We are currently in proccess of moving them to the new server. Your VPS will then be created and the backup restored. New login details and IP information will be emailed to you.
At this time we have no official ETA as transfer speeds fluctuate during transfer of the backup files. We will credit your accounts for the downtime caused by this outage.
Once again we apologise for any inconvinience caused and thank you for your patience during this time. We will email you again shortly with an ETA.

I have a VPS , I recently upgraded because the server kept crashing due to lack of memory. I actually upgraded about two hours ago and the damn thing crashed again!
I went into virtuozzo and it said I had 12 mb of memory left.
So I restarted the container, the site loads faster than ever, and says I have 16% of memory left
So when I restart the container it resets?

i run a vbuletin forum, right now i am on a virtual dedicated
All my ips are stored on the same root ip, i am moving one of my forums from the default IP to a separate IP. I populated the DNS and my webite shows up properly on the new IP, but my forum is comming up as a database error.
Does anyone know what I can do to fix the problem? Or tools I can run? Or is it merely not connecting to the database yet, because of some name server or other issue?

My site has outgrown my current host and I'm strongly leaning towards a vps. I am relatively inexperienced with web hosting as for the last 18 months I've had very few issues with my current host (Stream101.com). They are currently saying my site is very memory and processor intensive which is why I'm going to have to leave them soon(I can't pay the dedicated server prices that would give my site the stability I desire).
About my site:
My site has 18,000+ users, its about 18 months old. 5,632 threads, 78,967 posts. It used about 150gig of bandwidth last month. The site is growing quickly (IMO). The site makes some money, but not enough to justify spending what it would cost for a dedicated server.
I'm happy to provide any other information, but what I am looking for is suggestions on:
1) Is a VPS the right choice for my site in your opinion.
2) What hosting company's would you suggest I look into.
3) How much ram/processor speed should I be looking for
4) any other information you feel I should know about this.

I installed Team plus this vbulletin mod integrated into my vbulletin database
[url]
I'm getting the below error when attempting to connect to my TS:
[17:46:38] No reply from server
Maybe the server is offline
or maybe teamspeak is not running on it
However, the server is running on PID 2967
In CSF firewall, I have these enabled
TCP_IN = 8767,51234,14534
TCP_OUT = 8767,51234,14534
I tried the main server IP and even the IP that the domain is hosted on.
For http port, I also tried 80 default. I have no idea what goes in "server id" anyway.

I am on a VPS with Centos 4 OS and Cpanel/WHM.
I am going to soon be upgrading to the latest version of vBulletin (3.7.0). They are recommending PHP 5.25 with APC installed. I am talled that Zend (which I have installed and eaccelerator) is not compatible with APC.
The vBulletin people say that APC will perform better than Zend, and that zend should be disabled and APC installed and enabled.
A couple questions.
1. I'm curious what people's opinions are on here about APC vs. Zend (eaccellerator) or possibly xcache.
2. I have once been told that APC and xcache aren't compatible with Cpanel/WHM. Is this correct?
3. Assuming 2 isn't correct, if I decide to move to APC, what do I need to do to disable/uninstall Zend/Eaccellerator and install/setup APC?

I have the max vars and all that set right to conform to vbulletin, Only problem is now I keep getting this in /var/log/messages
suhosin[8569]: ALERT - script tried to increase memory_limit to 4294967295 bytes which is above the allowed value (attacker '*******', file '/home/user/public_html/includes/class_xml.php', line 35)
The line its pertaining to is @ini_set('memory_limit', -1);
I'm pretty sure its not blocking anything, least nothing I see but it does this everytime someone accesses certain pages on a forum.
My memory_limit for php is 60 mb, I checked out different ways of configuring it, but the only thing I think would stop the alerts is setting the suhosin memory limit to 4 gb, as it says the script is calling for that. But I suppose if there was a crappy or malicious php script they would easily be able to ini-set and suck all the memory.
So basically what i want to do is just disable this alert as its filling the messages up. Has anyone dealt with this before?

I am running about 20 servers with default exim configuration that cpanel
writes on the servers.
One of the servers get a very high load when some of the customers send
mails to
His clients through the VBulletin script.
These mails doesn't exceed 20 thousand mail , and when he sends load goes
very high,
However other servers sends maybe 40 thousand mails without a big problem ,
and with same configuration and specification.
What can I do , or where can I work around to decrease the exim consumption
of the load like that.
I' $ve tried queue_only_load=6 but no any benefit :-(

A quick question for those running Vbulletin in Windows. I am running on a shared Windows 2003 server the Open Basedir is not enabled and the Safe Mode is off as per default setting. I can't change it as it is a shared hosting. The upload function is having problem due to the Open Basedir restrictions. Anyway to overcome that? The PHP is running in CGI mode.

I'm on a dedicated server and the httpd service of the server keeps going down which results in downtime for the number of hours until i dont realise that the site is down.
So when I realise the site is down, I ask the hosting support to look into the issue, they tell me the server loads are high and ask me to upgrade even when I just upgraded the server last month.
Generally the forum has around (250 - 300 members) + guests visitors online and is in the alexa top 20k sites.
The first thing I would want to do is hire a person who specializes in server optimization but then I have heard a lot of bad things like the server admin stealing databases and selling it in open market.
The second thing I wanted to do is contact vbulletin for server optimization but they need me to give them server specs and I dont know how to obtain them.

I've been doing some comparing for web hosting and given that my vBulletin.com thread gave me zero input, I thought I'd post here & see what advice I can gain.
I currently have a vBulletin forum hosted through 1&1 Shared Hosting. Huge upcoming problem is 1&1's 100MB MySQL Database size limit, not something that had been factored at the site's launch. The only option 1&1 has provided is an upgrade to one of their VPS servers, starting at $29 a month. The site is currently at only half that limit, around 50MB so I'm taking the time now to figure what to do in the next several months.
I've been open to the idea of simply transferring to another shared host with a larger MySQL database limit (looked at Host Gator that offers 2GB limit) or forking out the extra cash for the VPS and consolidating some of my other websites onto the VPS.
Currently, the forum receives (per month) 2000 unique visitors, 200,000 page views, and about ~40 users online at one time. I really want to know, if I move to another shared host will the CPU usage eventually get my account suspended if site growth picks up? Or would I be better off consolidating various websites onto a single VPS and taking my chances with a 1&1 upgrade?

I have a site which uses vBulletin. After a long story we ended up with the need to restore it's database from a backup.
The backup proccess was in fact copying the database files - .MYD, MYI; so no mysql dumps.
I've recreated the dabase from phpmyadmin and created a standard user wtih read/write permissions and a dba user.
After that I've copied the database files from the backup and when I've tried to launch the site, it gives me the error:
"Warning: mysql_query(): Unable to save result set in /includes/class_core.php on line 354"
That's all the output I get.
I've modified the files permission to 755 and changed the owner and group; I've modified the vBulletin file to use the dba user account to access the database... all this without any luck.
I've done some searching and I've found that restoring database .MYI/.MYD files is simple - stop mysql, copy files, set permissions and fire up mysql. I've replicated the steps but still doesn't work.

1 server for HTTPD
1 server for MYSQL
The forum is running very slowly, even though server load is low on both servers.
I have tried different mysql optimizations but nothing seems to be working.
Would anyone be willing to help me solve this issue? If so, please PM me. I am happy to pay for your time.

Hello,
Lunarpages and jerked me around enough times that I'm considering other options. I won't go into too many details, but they recently moved me to a new server that was configured completely different and my forum ended up being down for 4 days. During that time, their support was non-existent. Now, they keep sending me emails that I'm exceeding my alloted CPU usage. They want me to upgrade.
Admittedly, I am using their lower end hosting, which I think I paid $100 for the year or something.
After the way I've been treated, I can't imagine spending another dime at Lunarpages. So I'm looking for new hosting options. My forum is growing, but it certainly isn't a large forum. I have about 30-40 new members join each day and I usually have about 1,000 active members. I'm running vbseo and a few mods, but my unique hits per day is probably around 2,000 uniques per day for the forum give or take. My forum does use quite a bit of bandwidth as people upload songs they have recorded and submit them for review frequently.
I've considered the notion of having a server built for me and paying $100 per month for colocation and being done with it, but I'd prefer to avoid this cost, if possible.
Any suggestions?
