I cannot find a suitable forum for this query so here goes on this one!
I am doing a charity site as a voluntary exercise. They currently host with Eclipse who have the Zeus server (site developed in Frontpage).
This is not an open source server. Thing is, what are the issues of say developing on my loacal machine (apache or IIS5) and having the remote being Zeus. I use Dreamweaver 8 for developing.
I would of thought this does not matter as the server technology is transparent and down to configuration files. The directory structure both ends can be the same.

We have our domain hosted on one dedicated server and have 3 accounts setup
Our live site is accessible from /home/live/public_html
Our development site is accessible from /home/dev/public_html
Our stage site is accessible from /home/stage/public_html
Each site version can be accessed online through those Urls
[url]
[url]
[url]
Each account have their own DB and username dev , stag, live
We are working with 2 designers and 2 coders. Which both work on the dev account and DB.
We would like to be able to safely control and update the stage then the Live. Files only, DB only or Files + DB update between accounts Without having to mess with permission in the command line.
Is there any visual CVS or other software out there for compatible with RedHat that would allow us do this efficiently and without requiring DBA and server support to handle those updates between accounts.

I have an old laptop with the following specification: Memory: 485 MiB, Processor: Genuine intel CPU T2300 @ 1.66 GHz ×2, OS Type: 32 bit, Disk: 78.1 GB,
I installed on it Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and I noticed that the overall system is very slow in responding. I tried to search about that in the internet and I found some articles talking about how to make Ubuntu 12.04 LTS run fast I applied all what they said including download LXDE desktop environment and then nothing different in the system response time.
Then I need to develop some android applications so, I download Android Studio (Beta) 0.8.6. The problem became worse than before whenever I tried to open the Android Studio the screen is frozen for some minutes then it took time to download the projects and initialize the work space also, when I tried to move the cursor he is move very slowly. When I tried to run my first application on the AVD it took three hours and still not run yet.
I delete the Android Studio and install it again several times, I was trying to solve the problem but still nothing change.

I have this problem with my hosting provider. Website is loading slowly (sometimes up to 10 sec) from my location. I've made several checks:
1. Script execution time is within 0.1 sec.
2. Tracert shows times within 0.3 sec.
3. Also, host-tracker.com shows average loading time ~2.0 sec (they check from 20-30 different locations around the world).
So, the questions:
1. What can cause such long slow-downs?
2. What average loading times can be expected from shared hosting? Is 2.0 sec (average) good or bad? For example, google.com has average response time of about 0.2-0.3 sec, but they have many servers around the world.

After a recent update (4.2.1) for Wordpress all of our sites showed issues when editing a page the "Visual editor" would not be available any more.
You would only see nothing where normally html text or WYSIWYG is supposed to appear. Text in editor window has the same color (white) as background (white).
I'm curious if others had same issue?
-- it's affected all websites
-- it's not plugin related
-- fresh websites with twentytwelve and hello world page have same issue
-- disabled mod (did not work)

I'm using Concrete5 CMS to create a website. This CMS creates/manages all its webpages in a mySQL database. Thus, there is no physical folder associated with each webpage, so I can't simply create an .htaccess file and place it in the directory tree in the right sub-folder to restrict access for that sub-folder and all folders it contains.
I have one .htaccess file located at the root level (e.g top-level folder for the website).
QUESTION 1: I need place in this top-level .htaccess file to (1) restrict access to only two specific IP addresses that I can specify (blocking access to all other IP addresses), and (2) specify the URL addresses that I wish to apply this rule to?
For example, let's say my website is [URL] ....
And I want to restrict access to the [URL] ....
and my .htaccess file is located at
/home/myname/public_html/conc/.htaccess
What code can do that?

I've just built a new LAMP server and I'm having a little issue where Apache doesn't serve a simple non-database webpage, instead, I get an error on all my virtual-host in the browser: Database Error: Unable to connect to the Database: Could not connect to MySQL.
I've googled the problem but since the error mentions MySql, everything I find is related to connecting to MySql, which I'm not trying to connect... and I've contacted my Linux mentor about this issue... This is something I've never seen before... don't know why Apache thinks I'm trying connect to MySQL on every browser call to the server...
However, MySQL is accessible via telnet, and all my permissions are correct...

I have a machine with 2*Xeon 2.66, 16GB Ram, 146GB Raid 1, 292GB Raid 10.
This machine will be used to run Mysql (32bits or 64bits) and MDaemon (32bits only).
I have 2 options to choose and I'm not pretty sure which is better.
a) Win 2008 32bits Enterprize using PAE for ram support and running Mdaemon 32 and Mysql 32.
b) Win 2008 64bits standard having virtualized a win 2008 64 bits for Mysql 64 and a win 2008 32 bits for MDaemon 32.

i wanted to buy a dedicated server and when i had questions about 2003 web, i talked to hivelocity live support and i think it was dave who told me that Windows 2003 web has a restriction for mysql which was 512 KB. I myself is planning to own a gameserver that uses java and mysql and i know for sure uses much much more space than 512 KB. Is this true that 2003 restricts the size of your DB and when your DB reaches 512 kb, it can no longer be used? Also, is the windows 2008 web licensing fee the same as windows 2003 web?

I am about to move my site to a dedicated server. My current site is running on PHP and MYSQL on a Linux box (shared host), but I am familiar with Windows/IIS so I decide to run the site on Windows 2008 instead of Linux on a deciated server.
Before I begin to move, I would like to ask for your experience. Have anyone here ever tried PHP/MySQL on Windows server in production environment? What are the limitations (and/or performance issues) when running PHP/MySQL on Windows?

I've started to use Plesk 8.4 on Windows Server 2008 at work, and totally love it. The IIS7-native MS rewrite engine works pretty good. It's a dedicated box.
For my own hosting, I use either shared/reseller or VPS. Looking around, it seems every VPS is still on Windows Server 2003 and IIS6.
I took a look at the Parallels site, but came up empty. Is Server 2008 not supported by Virtuozzo yet? Is that what everybody's waiting for? If that's the case, any news/rumors on when it may be supported? IIS7 is a huge leap over IIS6, in terms of PHP and the Rewrite (plus a few other things, though not as important to me).
Too bad IIS7 won't be on Server 2003.
