is there any special setting on kernel config to recompile kernel and boot it?

Oct 1, 2007I need to recompile my kernel to change the USER_HZ to 1000. However, I am not really sure how to do this and I really need help. I've found a lot of guides and they're really for the advanced linux user, im not really that advanced, I only know a little bit. A messenger like MSN or google talk would be a great way to communicate doing this, since ill have a load of questions.

May 9, 2007I'm going to add a second AMD opteron 270 dual core processor + 2 GB DDR ram to my server this week, but do i have to recompile the kernel after i've installed the second processor? Or change something in grub?

Recompile Php
Jun 28, 2007I want to add a new feature to my existing php, so, recompile php is expecting. I don't know how to recompile it.
What I did was
1) ./configure
2) make
3) make install
but everything keeps same as before, nothing changed.
I googled something about ./build clean, and ./build php, but it seems I don't have any command about ./build
I don't have control panel on my server, just php.

Jan 25, 2007I am pretty much being forced to recompile PHP as I want to include OCI Oracle Extensions to read from our business database hosted in Oracle 10g. I installed a binary version of PHP to begin with and Don't have much experience compiling anything from source, although I am somewhat familiar with the concept. I know that sometimes installing extensions can be as easy as using apt-get or yum but I haven't found any information telling me I can do this for the OCI extensions I need to install.
My question is, When installing from source, what do I have to do within apache to update and work with the newly installed PHP.
When installing and running ./configure -OPTIONS GO HERE, what options other than the ones to tell it to use the libraries for Oracle, do I need to use?
I know this is a pretty vague question, but any help is truly appreciated.
I'm using Apache 2 and PHP 5 on an ubuntu 6.10 server install.

I mean even i have set Maxclients limit in httpd.conf to 3000, but it still does 2048 connections.

when i configure vmware it asks at one point for kernel header files. where would i find them to match the current kernel?
i asked at parallels forums but help there is very scarce. i checked openVZ repositories and they dont yet have headers for this version.
what are my options? i have one last windows machine left and want to run it in VMware.
Centos + Kernel 2.6.9-34.0.2- How To Upgrade Kernel
Apr 29, 2007Last year I ordered a new server with Centos 4.3 and it had the kernel kernel 2.6.9-34.0.2ELsmp installed. It runned fine and I didn't update any packages since then.
Today I started getting a problem where both mysqld and kswapd0 uses very high amounts of CPU, spiking up to 100% and my memory usage is at 99% all the time. The problem seems exactly the same as the one mentioned in this thread.
In that thread the exact same kernel is said to be insecure and to cause this problem. I also came across a centOS bug that reports this problem with high cpu, mem usage and mysql & kswapd0 consuming all resources.
In the linked thread the person solved the problem by upgrading to kernel 2.6.9-42 using rpms but others recommended a newer kernel or a custom compiled kernel for CentOS.
Apparently when they used yum it said 34.0.2 was the latest kernel.
What should I do to upgrade the kernel, which version should i upgrade to, and where do I get it from? I won't be able to compile a custom kernel and I've only installed basic rpm packages before.

Is This End Of HDD , Is HDD Failing
May 7, 2008Today i just noticed i cannot login to my Direct admin panel no more all the sudden, but was working fine 24 hrs back.
So i login to root, and hit yum update, but guess what i get :
-bash: /usr/bin/yum: Input/output error
And to my surprise i go to /home/user/ to look for sites, and the public_html folder is un-accesible and is all pinkish/orangish with question marks besides them :

Even tmp folder says this :

i noticed this when i try to update da password or change it so i could login to DA :

Apr 27, 2007for the past 4 days i have being having problems with my Apache server. on day one i noticed it was going down irregularly over day 2/3 it got progressively worse by last night httpd would only work after i restarted it then 5minutes later it failed again. now it wont start at all every time i tried restarting from whm it just says 'httpd failed' ive also tried restarting from shell but no joy. ive tried rebuilding apache from whm that hasn't helped either. one error i was getting was 'invalid user name' of a user who i terminated yesturday.

Here's a copy of the trouble ticket I posted to the host, they said "If you read through the documentation for smartd you will find that from the results you pasted, your hard disk passed every test. We can give you another hard disk if you want but we will have to charge you 3 credits for the reinstall of the operating system." I could be wrong, maybe everything's fine, but the fact that there are unreadable sectors reported has me a little worried.

I installed ASSP X onto my cPanel VPS, assp2 seems to be failing every so often.
Httpd Keeps Failing
Jan 21, 2007Before I used to get around 5-6 a day emails saying that httpd has failed and a restart has been attempted automatically.
After I increased the max clients in the httpd.conf the number reduced 1-2 emails a day.
I am not sure what the problem exactly is
Is it because my sites are using up high bandwidth?
Bind Keeps Failing
Oct 22, 2007For some reason BIND keeps failing on my cPanel server every couple of days. There are no error logs in the /var/logs/messages file concerning the crash but when I manually restart bind then it logs messages just fine and I can see them. Does BIND keep any other error logs?
Today it seemed to coincide with a big movement in system memory, here my munin graph:

Cannot SSH Into The Server Since Sshd Keeps Failing
Apr 17, 2009/dev/sda1 is mounted to / on my dedicated server, however, it is 100% full and cPanel is having problems with it. Is there a way I can clean out some files?
Additionally, I cannot SSH into the server since sshd keeps failing. Anyone know what I can do?
I'm sure /dev/sda1 isn't usually mounted to / but who knows.
Failing Controller Or Drive
Mar 28, 2009one of my servers has 2x250gb hard drives in hardware RAID 0 using a 3ware controller, but ive now got the following error message 3 times prior to 3 server crashes, my server supplier beleves it one of the drives failing (i have backups on a non raid drive so rthats fine) but i suspect the controller, whats everyone else think...

HTTPD Failing .. Troubleshooting
Sep 29, 2008I noticed all of my sites were down earlier.. so I tried restarting apache via WHM.. and that didn't work, said the following:

CentOS Update Failing
Jun 25, 2008I'm having a problem with my CentOS 5 box. for some reason the update will not work.
I run yum update, The update starts, then when it gets too downloading the packages I get the following error for every single RPM.
[url]: [Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (114, 'Operation already in progress')> Trying other mirror.
The RPM's can be downloaded just fine if I copy and past that URL in my browser. I don't understand why the server can't open that URL
Does anyone know of a fix for this? Or is anyone else at iWeb having the same problem.
