PhpBB/Joomla/MediaWiki - Which Opcode Cacher To Use

Jun 30, 2009

768MB VPS with DirectAdmin. I will be using phpBB, Joomla, and MediWiki and would like to install an opcode cacher. The 3 most popular ones appear to be: APC, xcache, and eAccelerator.

wouldn't be able to install an opcode cacher on my own without instructions I can just copy and paste into the command line. So my priorities are that it's easy to install/update, it doesn't take manual tweaking to get it working properly, and it's known to have less issues. With phpBB, Joomla, and MediaWiki in mind, which opcode cacher should I go with?

MediaWiki Configuration

Oct 18, 2007

I just installed a MediaWiki on my host to a certain folder and for some reason, when I go to that folder, it would show a blank page.

In order for me to access the wiki, I found that I need to type example.com/mywikifolder/INDEX.PHP5.

Generally, it would seem like index.php is inactive for some reason and instead index.php5 is the one that's working.

I don't mind. But I do want to be able to access the site by typing the correct domain without having to add index.php5 so would there be any way to rewrite it in some way to make index.php5 the default index?

Apache :: Restricting Access To Mediawiki

Mar 12, 2014

I have an ubuntu Server install running the latest Apache. This is all running on a Virtualbox VM.

I have 3 sites configured. 2 of them are set-up with DNS point from the outside world and are working just fine.

When I go to domain1.com and domain2.com the right pages are displayed. The 3rd host is the default host and when I go to the local ip address 192.168.0.x of the server the correct folder is being displayed.

So all being well I wanted to run MediaWiki on that local default host. limiting access to people who are on the local subnet. Seems easy enough I will change the "allow from all" statement for that virtual to allow from 192.68.0.0/255.255.255.0 and add the deny.

But my issue is the the alias
Alias /mediawiki /var/lib/mediawiki
is being added to all 3 sites
so domain1.com/mediawiki domain2.com/mediawiki are also displaying the wiki pages.

This alias was added in the /etc/mediawiki/apache.conf by the mediawiki install. The instructions I had were to then go in and uncomment to make it available.

Shared Hosts Offers Php-opcode Caching

Jul 19, 2008

why so few shared hosting companies enable a php op-caching system on their system (xcache, apc, eaccelerator).

Is there some specific technical reason in place?

Usually I run my own servers, but it happens from time to time that you need a quality shared hosting in order to reccomend it to a friend, for a personal blog, a small website, maybe your own personal blog that you're not keen to host on your dedicated servers already used for big projects ...

Now, as everyone using php applications knows, software like xcache or eaccelerator gives a nice speed bost to page generation. I run xcache on all my servers and vps (mainly running vbullettin and wordpress) and never encountered any issue.

Installing one of those (eg. xcache) is a 5minutes procedure, and even for kiddie-hosting companies that won't know how to build php, the ability to compile eaccelerator is in the cpanel easy php build software, so you don't even need to know how to rebuild php to enable eaccelerator in cpanel.

Despite all these facts is quite impossible to find a decent webhoster with xcache or apc/eacc enabled ...

The only one claiming to have eaccelerator is medialayer : "# Zend Optimizer, IonCube, and eAccelerator" this is a quote from their website.

How come nobody else undertakes this step?

What I have been noticing is most premium shared-hosting provider I encountered run their server with a lot of free memory .. so why not impress the customer with blazing fast page generation times (wordpress footer displaying "page generated in 0.071 seconds" impresses also the non-technical savy customers) enabling such a simple feature ?

There should be something I am missing, for sure.

Opcode Caches And Segfaults (XCache, EAccelerator)

Dec 8, 2007

Running gallery2 on a box with 4GB RAM. Tried PHP 5.2 w/XCache then with eAccelerator, both caused segmentation faults after a couple days.

"In a previous article, I stressed a common problem with all PHP op-code caches/accelerators: they die with segmentation faults every once in a while."

Anybody using logwatcher? How many faults per day do you get? If you're using a cache and never get segfaults how busy is your site and how do you prevent them?

Phpbb Vs Typo3

Sep 29, 2007

Mods, if this topic does not belong there - please forgive me and move it where it does belong

I have a question about forums. I am going to have a website based on Typo3 cms. The host is almost found. The site will have its forum and I want it to be as secure as possible. Unfortunately, I cannot invest $ into paid forums, like vbulletin.

The question is, which forum is more secure and which one will become the biggest obstacle for hackers / spambots - phpbb or Typo3 forum?

Phpbb Upgrade From 3.0.1 To 3.0.2 Failed

May 28, 2009

My current phpbb Installation is 3.0.1 and i want to upgrade it to latest 3.0.4. However as you know, automatic upgrade is available only for 3.0.2 to 3.0.4 and 3.0.3 to 3.0.4. So iam attempting to upgrade 3.0.1 to 3.0.2 and then auto upgrade 3.0.2 to 3.0.4.

I have downloaded and extracted the 3.0.2 source. I have moved the install folder of 3.0.2 to root where my phpbb has been installed. I then used the url domain.com/phpbb/install and the browser based conversion/upgradation has been invoked.

However iam having serious trouble in providing the board path. whatever i have specified, it returns the error --

Could not find path to your former board. Please check your settings and try again.

Moving PhpBB Hosts

Oct 19, 2009

We are currently running a phpBB forum on Dreamhost shared hosting and have been getting a lot of Internal Server Errors, so it's time to move to a new host.

We generally have around 200-300 members online (within the last 30 mins). We are using around 2.8TB/month of bandwidth currently. We get around 135,000 visits per month and 470,000 pageviews.

Dreamhost use their own way of measuring database usage..

Quote:

We've developed a unit of measure that helps to track database performance that we call the "conuery":
(25 * connections) + queries = Your database's conuery usage

Our database disk usage us 24mb, we are averaging around 100,000 database connections per day, around 85,000 queries per day and our "Conuery" is around 3 MCn per day (this means nothing to me either lol).

I have found a VPS package with directspace - 2x Intel Quad Core Xeon, 50GB Storage, 2Gb RAM, 2.5GB Burst Ram and 5TB of monthly bandwidth, for $35/month.

Is this likely to be an adequate solution for our needs? We would be running both the database and web services for phpBB from this box.

Also, can anyone give any hints on the best (and most seamless way) to migrate? I'm thinking that we'll get the new host to install all the services and get the box up and running, then I can ftp the files to the new server and export/import the databases. Then perform a (301?) redirect on the old host, pointing to the new IP address until the DNS is updated.

I realise that I'll need to update the config.php for phpbb with the new database details etc, along with the database details for our wordpress implementation and update the server details in the board configuration.

Cleaning Up PhpBB Forum

I am in the process of cleaning one old unused phpBB technical forum. As of now the forum is full of spam posting and junk users. I did upgrade it to the latest version, applied a few security tools to prevent spam users from registering. It seems they aren't that much effective. I still get around 50 new spam posting a day.

Do you have any suggestions/tools to help me in getting up the database cleaned. Do you prefer migrating to another forum software. If yes can you recommend some tool for that?

Host That Will Transfer Existing PhpBB

Current BB: readybb.com/cindysommer

My technical skills: only enough to be dangerous

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

My current host is not satisfactory. Support is practically non-existant. I need to know if there is such a thing as a host that will provide transfer services as I do not have the technical ability to do it myself.

I would think the ideal situation would be to copy everything to the new host first, but as much as I've read and read about this for months, I still do not trust myself to do it.

Inexpensive VPS For Busy PHPBB Forum

If not, are there any shared hosting providers that specialize in hosting message boards like PHPBB?

PhpBB Or SMF For High Traffic Website

May 27, 2007

My dedicated server has only one site hosted in it, and we have a forum (SMF), but it seems that it cant handle the traffic on peek hours.

Dual Processor Dual Core Intel Woodcrest 5140
4 Total 2.33 GHz Cores
Dual 1333 MHz Front-side Bus (FSB)
4 MB Shared L2 Cache
8 GB 667 MHz FB-DIMM Memory (Fully Buffered)
2 x 250 GB SATA HD in Hardware RAID 1

I've talked with several people and all said that this server is enough to handle such traffic. So the problem might be on the forum software.

I've already installed eAccelerator and tweaked everything, but it still hangs when spikes occur.

Do you think that phpBB will handle such traffic better?

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Upgrading Phpbb Breaks Installation

Jan 12, 2015

I am running phpbb 3.0.12 installed from Plesk. In Plesk it is showing me that there is an upgrade available to version 3.1.2-15 however when I Re-Check the version in phpbb it says that I already have the latest version 3.0.12. That's a little weird.

The problem is when I upgrade to 3.1.2-15 in Plesk, it will mess with the whole installation. The forum page will redirect in circles to /install/index.php which doesn't even exist and I can't do anything except revert to before the upgrade.

So my questions are: Why does Plesk show a version 3.1.2-15 but phpbb says the latest one is 3.0.12? How does the upgrade process from Plesk work? I expect it to automatically do everything, or why else would I want to let Plesk upgrade?

Joomla + VPS Performance

Dec 9, 2008

I currently have a VPS in the UK that I host my clients joomla sites off and the specs of this VPS server are as below:

- 20 GB SA-SCSI Disk Space
- 350GB bandwidth
- Full root access / Parallels/WHM/cPanel
- 2 Dedicated IPs
- 384 MB SLM RA

I am now running around 10 joomla based sites off of this VPS, 5-6 of which are Ecommerce based sites. Whilst I am probably only using 10gb of the overall disk-space so far, in terms of performance, should I continue to add clients to this server or should I keep the more hungry sites on this server and move some of the less resource intensive non-ecommerce sites to another VPS? Or would it be in my best interest to upgrade to a Dedicated server where I will have all my own resources?

Joomla VPS Host

May 20, 2008

I have a joomla site running on a new unmanaged VPS at FutureHosting.biz and it is performing very poorly.

I am not a server admin but i copy the same CMS and database to a shared account i have access to and the site runs much faster. That shared account happens to be a SiteGround server which if possible, i would like to stay away from.

I have had bad experience with SG so i am contemplating, MidPhase, as an option for VPS support.

I was also considering LunarPages and HostGator but their recent datacenter problems and poor reviews i want to stay away from them as well.

I really want to find a quality host who has experience managing large joomla based sites.

Hosting For Joomla

Jun 15, 2008

I am going to start a new personal / business website which will feature articles along with pictures and few videos, all managed through Joomla. I recently visited the official Joomla forum and found a thread which posted guidelines on choosing a proper Joomla hosting.

forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?t=95678

3. The most security conscious hosts turn PHP's Register Globals directive OFF by default. The next best allow you to turn it off in local .htaccess or php.ini files. A host that requires you to run a site with Register Globals ON should be avoided. This is true for any PHP enabled site, whether or not you are running Joomla!. There is a legitimate argument to be made by hosts for keeping Register Globals ON for PHP4 sites. This is that it would break too much legacy code. This argument should not be accepted for a PHP5 installation. Beginning with PHP5, the official PHP recommendation was to keep Register Globals is OFF. Note that beginning with PHP6, there will not even be a Register Globals setting, so don't get caught in a Register Globals backwater. Modify your code to work without Register Globals, and choose a host that encourages such practices.

6. Be sure users on your shared server can't view each other's files and databases, for example through shell accounts and cpanels.

7. Choose a host that provides real information about security compromises, rather than simply shutting your site down. Check their user forums for evidence of how they've responded to cracks in the past. A good host may for example, inform you immediately that a security breach has occurred and will quarantine the problem file for you, while leaving it there for further investigation. A poor host will shut your site down and provide very limited information on why. Watch out! All too many do this.

8. Be sure you have access to raw server logs. Reading these logs is a vital part of site security and recovery.

9. Choose a host that limits the number of users per machine and the average CPU load per machine to some reasonable number (depending on hardware). Be sure they proactively move user sites as needed to balance load. Check the number of domains on a server using reverse IP lookup.

10. Choose a host that manages it's own data center. Check the data center infrastructure, such as redundant Internet access, hot swappable backups, full daily backups, environment and access controls, emergency generators, etc.

11. Check that your host is not at risk of having its IP addresses blocked because it hosts porn or SMAM sites.

What alarmed me was #3, #6-#11

My Question is, how the hell am I supposed to check for these flaws? I thought I was going to settle down with Hostgator or Hostmonster, but now I am not sure.

If Hostmonster or Hostgator do not meet these requirement, can someone be kind enough to suggest some?

I don't expect that much of traffic, so I want to keep the budget minimal: below $8. I know that by limiting this budget, I am limiting the quality of hosting, but I am not ready to commit my resource to my first site: just an experimentation of my limits.
