Network Setup

Feb 20, 2007

Here is the setup

3550 Port 1 (configured as router port) <-> port 1 3500 #1(configured as switch port access vlan 10) <-trunk-> 3500 #2 <-trunk-> 3500 #3 port 1(configured as switchport access vlan 10) <-> port 3/1 on 6503 (configured as router port)

3550 Port 1 has IP 10.0.0.21
6503 Port 3/1 has IP 10.0.0.22

the problem is the 6503 can ping the port on 3550(10.0.0.21) but the 3550 cannot ping 10.0.0.22

if i plug in a laptop to 3500 #3 port 1, everything works perfectly. so the trunk is working fine.

I tried connect laptop directly to the 6503 Port3/1 and able to ping both way.

Network Setup

Oct 29, 2007

I am collocating a bunch of servers on the windows platform. My DC has given me one straight through uplink cat 5 cable that I currently have plugged into my firewall (a Windows ISA Server).

The problem is that I have only a few of my useable IP’s on the firewall box but I don’t know how to put some of the others to use.

What I would like to do is put my APC remote reboot switch and my KVM/IP on public IP’s which I think should be before the firewall. If this is correct please advise me on how to do this. Do I just get a switch or hub and hook this to the uplink and then distribute the IP’s through that?

So I’ll have:

Uplink from DC
|
|
Switch/HUB
|
KVM/IP
FIREWALL-->Servers
APC SWITCH

Please point out the errors of my ways.

Software As A Service Network Setup

May 5, 2008

I was thinking of doing the following:

-- OPTION 1 --

Each server has everything it needs to provide the clients on that particular server. Meaning each server has cpanel, apache, php, mysql, smtp, pop, bind, etc.

So as the number of clients increases simply drop in new servers with each having everything on them.

-- END OPTION --

-- OPTION 2 --

The other option is to go with a centralized database, where each server has everything except mysql and I have one dedicated very high power box with ALL clients hitting the one MySQL server.

-- END OPTION --

Each option has its advantages/disadvantages.

Option 1 allows for very large scalability, simply drop in new servers. Option 2 will eventually run out of power and require a cluster to handle the mysql traffic.

Option 1 allows for fault tolerance and issues to only effect customers on that single server versus effecting all clients with a centralized server.

Option 1 however has major issues with rolling out new database schema and changes. It becomes a NIGHTMARE to make the changes to say 5, 10, 50 servers versus making the change on 1 centralized mysql server.

VPN (Virtual Private Network) Server Setup

Jul 9, 2008

I'm trying to setup a VPN server on windows 2003 standard. It suppose to work like this if configuration is correct: the server will have 20 static public IP addresses, each of my workstations will use one of the 20 IPs to connect to the server, then connect to the internet with the same IP it connects to the server. So if I do a IP lookup, each workstation will show a different public IP but the server will always assign the same IP to the same workstation.

Now all my workstations can connect to the server with any of the IPs I have, and they can surf the internet with no problems at all. However, if I do a IP lookup, every workstation shows the same pubilc IP which is totally not what I wanted. I have searched google and not much useful infor come up. Can any of the experts here help me out?

Win 2003 Ent - Multi Comp Network Setup

May 14, 2007

What i'm trying to setup:

Internet comes in from modem into dual nic 1u server(DNS/DHCP/Firewall). It's getting an internet ip from first nic, then a private internal ip for 2nd nic. That 1u issues ip's through gig ethernet switch to 3 other servers from 2nd nic. Those other servers are dedicated for website, one for database, and one for email.

If each run win 2003 server ent, how can people access the email server if the only comp getting an internet ip is the 1u server, and same idea with website.

Also if people can access the website, how can the website server pull information from the dedicated database server if it's only getting an internal ip?

I'm thinking Microsoft Routing and Remote Access?

Dedicated Or Reseller Setup With Virtualization Or Decent Chroot Setup

Jul 31, 2008

As my clients' needs expand, they're asking for chroot ssh/sftp setup. I'm currently on a dedicated Linux setup but don't really have the time to set up a whole new box with full virtualization or investigate a full chroot solution (baby on the way), and to be honest it would be less hassle to move to a new provider than worry about down time with sites.

What I'm looking for:

- linux hosting
- hosting for 30+ accounts, some with several domains
- at least 6 IP addresses for SSL certs
- each account in a full chroot environment (ssh/sftp/ftp) so they can't poke around each others' files, or each account set up in a virtual machine setup (ie: openvz)
- maildir
- spamassassin
- php 5, mysql, perl 5.8.8
- suexec apache would be nice

DNS Setup And FTP Setup [LXAdmin/HyperVM]

Aug 1, 2008

I have learnt it is harder to setup than I initially expected (since I have just moved from a shared hosting service). I am in need of some help setting up my DNS servers, as I am very confused. Here is most of the info I know:

1) I am running HyperVM

2) I've installed LXAdmin

3) I own the domain (purchased from xeodomains.com) runemart.com

4) My VPS hostname is: vps.runemart.com

5) I know my IP

6) My host has said:

'For VPS customers that have a HyperVM login you can now host forward DNS on the DNS servers rdns1.vaserv.com (US)rdns2.vaserv.com (UK'

And I am unsure what this means/how to do it.

I am not sure if I need some more information to set up my DNS, however I am sure that I can get it if I do.

Now, my questions begin. Firstly, I need to point my domain - runemart.com - somewhere. I believe I need to set up my DNS via HyperVM or LXAdmin so that they are something like: ns1.runemart.com and ns2.runemart.com. Though, is this correct? Am I able to set up my own actual domain name servers, or will my domain have to point at something like rdns2.vaserv.com?

If anyone can assist me in this I would be very greatful, as I am waiting to get my website running. This is all I will ask for now, I will take it one step at a time =).

VPN Network

Sep 25, 2006

Okay, I have been trying to get a VPN network setup here between our DC and our office for weeks now and have not been sucessful.

Here is our goals:

-use 10.x.x.x/255.0.0.0 as a local backend network at our DC
-be able to assign a 10.x.x.x address at the office to all workstations and be able to access any of the local machines at the DC
-we have a asterisk server that we use and want to run that on the same network, asterisk box at the DC, phones at the office

We are wanting to impliment this for allot of security procedures and for ease.

But I also want to be able to have this like at my house so I can still be on the VPN. I want to have my house, office and DC always connected and then setup remote ability too to dial in via VPN.

What would be the best way to accomplish.

I have already tried having a few Linksys RV082 and WRV54G but the remote and local networks must be different networks, so this will not work here.

I have some VPS with Knownhost and i use it for hosting purposes.

First, I'm not from USA.

Here in my country we have several ISP but one of them ( i guess the biggest one ) is having problems with their link that connects to another countries ( including USA ).

Many of my customers that uses this ISP complains about their site being down and also slow download speeds ( 10kb/s when they usually download at 200kb/s ). When they run a traceroute i see that the problem is related to the ISP.

I have already contacted the ISP but they doesn't seen to "care" about their clients and i guess they won't solve this in a near future.

My question is if there is a way to solve this problem on my own?

I was thinking about getting a link with another ISP ( the one that really works ) with static IP and route this to Knownhost VPS. I know that this isn't a cheap solution but is it possible?

To make it simple, I am having some bays with dedicated servers. We offer 2 possibilities for bandwidth traffic: per Giga, or per MBit/s but I am having some problems. We currently use the router of our ISP better than buying a cheap low quality router.

- How can I know how much bandwidth does use on customer and how to limit if I have no access to the router ?

- How can I limit my customer from using free IP on the same block than he is ? We do configure server with IP and the same subnet, gateway and broadcast, so one customer could use free IP just so, and I would not even be able to know who is doing.

How do you limit and count this for your servers?

2AM Network Review

Oct 8, 2009

I've been lurking and posting on these forums long enough that I figure it's time for me to contribute something that might help other users: a quick review of 2AM Networks.

I have 2 dedicated servers with them and I couldn't be happier. Network uptime is 100% as far as I can see, the servers are delivered within their given timeframes (despite me ordering during a sales rush both times - I'm clever like that ) and with exactly the specifications requested.
Support is fantastic. I haven't needed it a great deal but all responses have been within 20-30 minutes and the answers are spot on.

You can see how good the prices are for yourselves in the dedicated offers forum or on their dedicated servers page but I'm pleasantly surprised to find that even the add-ons (IPs, etc) are the same price as more expensive competitors.

So if anyone is researching dedicated servers I'd recommend taking a look at 2AM Networks

(I'll report my server IPs to give this review some credibility)

Setting Up The Network

Jan 6, 2008

We're a small company that has outgrown dedicated hosting. We've got 8 servers currently with a well known hosting company, but the servers are starting to get old and we're growing. The cost of moving to colo just seem to make sense to us. We have a bunch of developers, but no network engineers. That being said, we're trying to figure out what we best need to move forward with going colo.

Sometime this month, we'll be purchasing 15-18 servers from Dell. We've already spoken to Colo4Dallas and plan to use their services. So we've got the servers and colo, but have no clue what we need with regard to switches, firewalls and remote-reboot.

1: What type of managed Cisco gigabit switch do we need? We don't know the specific model(s) that would be good for us. We want a hot backup and 24 ports. We manage multiple SSL sites (not sure if this is relevent) and 250+ ip addresses.

1a: Where do we manage ip addresses? We know we'll be getting a block of 250 ip addresses, but how do we assign ip address "a" to server "1"? Can we take that ip address and move it to another server if needed?

2: What type of firewall would be best for us, based on above requirements?

3: DRAC cards are pretty expensive, so we want a IP KVM switch. Any recommendations?

4: Remote reboote -- I've seen power strips out there that do this -- is that what we need, or is there another method we should consider?

5: Is there a company available in Dallas that we could hire to help us with these questions, or in setting everything up once we purchase the equipment?

We're not looking for the cheapest solutions, but the best ones.
