Narrowing Down The Options-what To Do For Secure, Managed MySQL
Apr 3, 2009
We want to serve web pages and I think we're getting very close to picking a partner for that. But we also want to have a secure, HA mySQL instance to vend serial numbers to purchased products. This means two more servers at separate data centers behind a load balancer. HA web servers are pretty expensive, is there a mySQL only solution that would be cheaper?(Connectria?) The load would be very light....

I'm no SQL expert so I'm not exactly sure what to look for in-depth here. However, I noticed that MySQL would periodically raise to 98% cpu usage in top. So, I checked it out and turns out every time you load the front page of a site I host it takes about 30 seconds to load and its during that time that MySQL is freaking out.
I know the user relies heavily on MySQL, however I want to try to narrow down the problem as much as possible for them. Any recommendations on what else to look for?

So I have been doing some research and I have found:
www.nagios.com
www.zabbix.com
www.hyperic.com
Tend to be the top 3 monitoring solutions for most hosts? Maybe some of you gurus can help me choose which is right for me? (also open to other options not listed above).
We current resell servers in 8 data centers around the world. We offer managed and un-managed servers. So we would need to provide different types of monitoring for both.
For the un-managed customers, we will need to provide basic ping + datacenter monitoring.
For the managed we will need to monitor everything from head to toe.
We're also growing quite fast so this needs to be able to hold quite a few servers (300+).
Also something that is easy to work with is a plus!

If you have a fully managed VPS that means either you did not have time to manage it or did not know much about server management that is why you are having a fully managed VPS
In case you do not know about servrs How can you know that the vps which is being fully managed is secure enough? and settings like firewalls are correct?
Is there any online tools to verify that?

I work for a small web design firm with about 100 clients/domains and we are starting the search for a new hosting provider. We need a managed dedicated server with an offsite backup. We are also looking for a company that knows what they are talking about. If we have a Linux or server question they need to be able to give us a quick straight answer. Also, if they could help us transfer all our hosting accounts from our current server over to the new one that would be a BIG plus.
We have been thinking about Rackspace or 1and1.com but were wondering what the community thought. Any recommendations?

I am looking for a VPS host in the $50 dollar range for 2 small to medium sized vBulletin forums. I have read about RAM usage and hope that the price I can afford can handle a not so big vBulletin forum or two, I will optimize them anyway but still. I am also concerned about mysql max connection errors.
Two, among others, of the names that I keep seeing good things about are liquidweb and jaguarpc, however I notice through google cache that liquidweb used to have a customer forum, but it doesn't seem to exist anymore? maybe there is a good explanation that I am missing? but support forum not existing anymore doesn't sound good in my opinion.
Jagaurpc's own forums has around 30 'emergency maintenance' threads over the last 6 weeks alone, again that doesn't sound good to me, even if it means that they are on top of it still so many 'emergency' situations can't be good?
Of course I prefer to have managed VPS as the above two seem to offer and helpfulness especially initially during setup. I hope to get opinions on these couple of issues specific to them and general recommendations on VPS

Is there a method of running a back-up script,as root, using MySQL, without passing or storing the root password in the clear?
I have tried OpenSSH with a nologin option using certificates, but I still have problems. I need to run it as a cron job every so often, (without specifics) securely.
I understand I can use another user, other than root, with read-only, but I need to back up the whole db at once, not specific users db's.

What can I do to secure access to my MySQL database to stop it from getting compromised from hackers?
Is there any way I can restrict access to the MySQL database to my IP only?
The database is for an IPB 2.3.4 forum and the username/password are stored in a conf_global.php file that is CHMODed 0444.

if there are any recommendations on managed database hosting services. This will be used for a fairly large project running on Mysql DB. Due to the size and complexity of the database a lot of resources are being used, so I prefer to find a company which specializes in dB hosting.

When a colo vendor can consider themselves as a managed colocation provider? What make them different than *normal* colo service?
If you need a managed colo, why not go with managed server? With managed server, your vendor will take care about the server health, including software and hardware too
(I am mentioning to fully managed server vendors like Rackspace, don't tell me cheap managed servers)

I've always had hosting where everything is pretty much already setup. I am now considering getting my own dedicated server. I see most good packages are Self Managed Servers.
I'm not a system admin and never had any experience managing and setting up my own server. Is this a lot of work? Is this something that is also pretty easily learned or does this really take a lot of knowledge?

This is more aimed at providers but do you allow partial upgrades on RAM/Disk/Bandwidth?
I'm asking as we have one brand which is fully automated which I refuse to do partial upgrades on as its done as a budget and if a user needs more they need to upgrade to the next package but it is budget.
On our more expensive brands we do allow partial upgrades

I host several web clients that were recently impacted by the crap at ThePlanet. As I think about how to be more redundant (and repetitive) I'm not sure of my options.
What's the best practice to ensure that if you have a server at a data center that goes out, that you can (somewhat) easily switch over to a different server? I suppose one solution is to have 2 servers at 2 physical locations, and then you could just change the DNS record in the event of failure, but is there another solution I'm not aware of? Is there a good resource I can goto to read up on this info?

Still considering co-location and have been for many months! One thing I'm now thinking of is firewalls. What firewalls are available to me, what functionality do they have? What kind of additional protection can they give against DDoS attacks?
I really have no idea where to go with hardware firewalls. The bandwidth going through the firewall on average would be no more than 10mbit/s. Perhaps 20 with growth!
how you went about setting up your colo space with firewall protection

I am selling custom software and web-design solutions. After my "unforgetable" experience with PayPal and 2CO i have found URL - they are new on the market and this is why they are more responsive than PayPal, whose priority is quantity, not quality. Most probably there are other option as well - simply this one is the most acceptable for me as it does not require complicated registration process/documents. I don't know how to get a normal merchant account if you live where I live.(I am from Ukraine). Please advice me some merchant accounts with their full discription.

Currently I cache php to html in a folder, and any time I upload index.php the whole site recaches. It also is set to a specific time such as 1 day, and the specific page will recache on someone hitting a page in 1 day from last cache.
The problem is when there are thousands of people on, and the index.php is uploaded the site crashes due to connections to the database, and possibly writing to the folder as well.
What is the best way to cache these files to html, and not have it crash every time I try to update things on the site. Also it needs to be something somewhat simple.

My host has told me that my forum is coming under a DDOS attack. Once was on Friday March 20th and again today (monday march 23). Before those two, there are attacks almost every week, sometimes twice a week.
The host installed DoS-Deflate. It started blocking legitimate traffic and had to be removed.
The operating system is Linux CentOS, the forum software is VBulletin. The server is a VPS with 1 gig of memory.
Besides DoS-Deflate, what other options are out there?

Just curious if any of you know of good ways to handle the bandwidth costs associated with hosting high traffic video sites.
For a future project I plan a dedicated server, but was hoping there might be a cheap way to avoid bandwidth costs - such as Amazon S3 (however from my calculations this is an expensive option).

I'm currently working for a company who are looking to migrate there current business system and also create an e-commerce website.
The company (Company A) who were doing the migration were also going to originally take care of the e-commerce side of things aswell, but after looking at the website solution they have now decided to give it to another company (Company B) to deal with. But seem to be sticking with the original company to do the business system migration.
Now this has created a bit of a problem with regards to the hosting side of things (amongst other things ).
Originally this was all going to be hosted by Company A. This would keep it all nicely integrated.
But now Company B are doing the e-commerce side of things it needs to somehow integrate with the business database.
And now for the question (about time i hear you ask ).
Can you give me the pros and cons of the following scenarios:
Scenario A:
We host both business system (database) and webservers onsite.
Scenario B:
Company A hosts business (database) solution. We host webserver.
Scenario C:
Company A hosts business (database) system. Company B hosts webserver.

to add an application firewall to an IIS server for PCI compliance reasons.
